T

he 50th anniversary of the “Summer of Love” is cooling down, and fall winds will turn to winter before long. The Civil Rights protests of that era brought us some of the most creative, informed and inspiring music of all time. It seems that fight is not over. With the current state of the world, it’s as important as ever to share the love. Although festival fun is almost over, the music never stops - it just moves indoors. For residents of Central New York, it only takes a short drive to see your favorite artist, check a legend off your must-see list, and above all, add to your life experiences. Check out what’s inside this edition for a list of nearby shows, tips on how to make the most of the experience, and more. Hopefully, together, we can help make this era’s music as meaningful to the world. Chad Ritchko Director of The Scene

Out of Town for a Concert?

Here’s How to Find the

Best Place to Eat By Kirsten Nunez here’s nothing worse than being hungry at a concert for which you traveled out of town. The lights dim down, the curtains rise, and… your stomach grumbles. Thankfully, that intense first note drowns it out, but you still know it’s there. Feeling hangry takes away from the entire experience. Sure, you could have grabbed some fast food along the way, but that’s just asking for tummy trouble. You know how it goes. When you’re out of town, finding a solid spot to eat can be tricky. There are so many things to consider in terms of timing, convenience and actual food. How long is the wait? Is the food even good? Can I walk to the venue? So. Many. Questions. When the next gig comes around, a little extra research will go a long way. Start with these tips for finding the best place to eat when you’re in a new town. It sure beats eating a $13 pretzel from a venue.

T

their favorite spots. On Facebook, leave a comment on the show’s flyer or post. The event page is even better. This way, you’ll increase the chances of getting a recommendation from a true local.

3. Check Out Yelp Where would our stomachs be without Yelp? Use it to your advantage and search for restaurants by town. You’ll be able to check out the details like handicap accessibility, price range, and whether or not it’s cash only. Don’t forget to view the menu if you have any dietary restriction or allergies. After you find a potential spot, cross check

2. Tag Wisely While you’re on social media, try your luck and tag the venue. They might reply with personal favorites and recommendations. Be sure to include the direction that you’re coming from, too. On Twitter and Instagram, take it up a notch and hashtag the town as well. Other people might find your post and reply with The Scene FALL/WINTER 2017

Once you find a place with good grub, be mindful of what you order. You want to be satisfied enough to rock out – minus the “food baby.” If you’re with friends, consider splitting an entrée or plate of appetizers. Everyone will save some cash and no food will go to waste. And, if you drink and the restaurant has alcohol, get a drink or two there. Unless, of course, you want a $10 beer to go with that $13 pretzel.

Don’t just eat. Be satisfied...

1. Post on Social Media By now, you’ve probably posted/tweeted/Instagrammed that you got tickets to the show. Maybe you also shared the flyer, or asked if anyone else was planning on going. While you’re at it, place a call out for food recommendations. There’s a good chance other people have gone out to eat before shows at the same venue. As the conversation opens up, ask about location in relation to the concert. They might even have the inside scoop on things like municipal parking lots or public transportation.

New Options for Oneonta’s Young Music Lovers Oneonta’s live music scene now has two more options for its teenage and young adult populations, thanks to FOR-DO’s two OASASsponsored clubhouse programs: Club Odyssey (22 Elm St.) for young adults, and the Oneonta Teen Center (4 Academy St.) for teens. It’s the mission of each program to provide young people with a safe space to hang out, without feeling the social pressure to drink. Young people hosting substance-free live shows for young people is just one of the many different ways that FOR-DO (Friends of Recovery of Delaware and Otsego Counties Inc.) is doing just that. Open since October 2016, Club Odyssey’s hosted several open mic events, with musical guests Catlike and Geronimo and the Expanding Headbands, as well as poetry and comedy acts. This year, CO is looking to host more shows and open mics by expanding to nights and weekends—a time when young adults are most prone to substance abuse.

Ian Austin, Director of the Teen Center, is excited to bring the Armory back on the music scene with young music lovers once again. “Bands always commented to me on how nice it was to play in a venue where their music was the main draw as opposed to the alcohol,” said Ian, “They also really like playing for younger crowds because they were getting new fans!”

FOR-DO’s Youth Services Coordinator, Kaler Carpenter, observed about the bash, “Everybody said they had good time, especially the artists.” Concerning the future, Kaler said, “I’m hoping that word will spread in the artist community about Club Odyssey, and that we’ll be able to book some dynamic acts this year for As far as what kind of shows will take place this year at Club Odyssey and OTC, that’s entirely Oneonta’s young adults.” dependent on what young people want to hear. While band members consider Ithaca the site of Jimkata’s takeoff, Friedell said he, drummer Lunn and guitarist Gorsch reserve a special fondness for their hometown, its crowds and its energy. “Ithaca was our home base, but Oneonta was always the place that felt like it had the most enthusiasm for us,” Friedell said. “When we were first starting and touring all over the place, we often found it a lot of fun to come back to Oneonta.” A favorite place to gig in Oneonta was the now-defunct Oneonta Theatre, Friedell said. “I remember a few very raucous shows there, playing upstairs … and it felt like the floor was going to collapse and people were going nuts,” he said. “There was so much support, especially from young people – just this awesome, unbridled enthusiasm – that (we thought), ‘If we can do this here, there’s no reason we can’t do it elsewhere.’” Today, with several national tours under his belt and Jimkata fans scattered across the country, finding that kind of reciprocal passion for the band’s music among its fans has been a highlight of the Jimkata journey, Friedell said. “(Oneonta) was always a riot … and just so much fun, and eventually we did grow to gain some of that in other places,” he said, naming Denver, Colorado and Greenville, North Carolina in particular. “Oneonta was just one of the first places that gave us that

hint that (Jimkata) could be something much bigger and really it has been. It’s been an awesome journey.” Jimkata’s dissolution, whether temporary or lasting, was necessary, according to Friedell, 31. Averaging between 100 to 150 tours a year, the band’s pace was untenable. That, and the timing felt right. “We’re just calling it the end of Jimkata for now,” said Friedell, adding, “We’re not putting any(thing) definite on it; we don’t really know. … We’ve been at it really hard for the past five or six years, just non-stop … touring out of a van or a trailer around the country … and everybody just felt a little bit tired. Being an independent band (is) always a constant effort and if people knew the amount of around-the-clock effort (required) and all the time away from home versus the actual payoff, I think they would be impressed that we could keep it going for that long.” Calling now the “right time to take a step back and pursue other things,” Friedell said for he, Lunn and Gorsch, the break will mean a chance to explore different, untapped musical avenues and reconnect with family. Asked what comes after Jimkata’s farewell tour, Friedell said, whatever his future holds, it will be rooted in music. “For me, this is what I do,” Friedell said. “I’m a musician and a songwriter

through and through.” In the immediate future, Fridell and Lunn will tour with Los Angeles-based singer-songwriter Doe Paoro. “She needed people to help her with the backing band for her tour,” Friedell explained. “It was a cool new opportunity that fell out of the sky, so I’m doing that and figuring out how to put out new music either on my own or with a new group.” As he and his childhood friends move forward, Friedell said he recognizes the bittersweet taste of disbanding. “Some things are sad, but for the most part I feel encouraged that we’ve been able to have so much success on our own out of upstate New York,” said Friedell. “The last tour we did was in many ways one of the best we’ve ever done. I guess what I’m most proud of is being a musician and writing my own songs. That feels like creating something from nothing, and to go from

three kids in a basement jamming and working on songs, to going places and seeing people singing those songs back at you, it’s the trippiest feeling and I’m extremely grateful.” For more information and the band’s farewell tour dates, visit jimkata.com or follow Jimkata on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram.

Says ‘Sayonara’ With Farewell Tour By Allison Collins imkata, a synth-y electro-rock trio started by three Oneonta natives more than 15 years ago, has risen steadily in recent years to national recognition thanks to dogged touring, a die-hard and widespread fan base, the release of five studio albums between 2009 and 2016 and, most importantly, the music - Jimkata’s sound has stayed distinct enough to feel indie and innovative, yet sonically smooth enough to stick in your head. In mid-June, however, band members and longtime friends Evan Friedell, Packy Lunn and Aaron Gorsch announced via the group’s social media channels their plans to “put Jimkata on hold indefinitely.” Though fans were quick to express heartache, the announcement didn’t come without its consolation prize - Jimkata will kick off a North-

east farewell tour this fall, beginning with gigs in and around the Ithacaarea, where the band got its true start. Lead singer, songwriter and guitarist, Evan Friedell, told The Scene this month about the group’s humble beginnings. Since first appearing in Oneonta’s Neahwa Park in 2004 as “Gymkata” (named for what Friedell called a “really bad American-made ‘80s kung fu movie”), it has been a wild ride. “Packy and Aaron and I have known each other since middle school,” Friedell said. “We first started playing just as kids, sort of getting to know our instruments and music and it was a totally different thing … but we started playing more seriously in Ithaca.” Noting that Jimkata “in the incarnation that it is now” began in 2006, Friedell said the group recorded its first demo in 2007.

Small Venue Recognition:

From The Other Side of The Stage By Evan Friedell, frontman of Jimkata s a touring musician, reviewing venues is a tricky assignment. I have an insider’s opinion, determined by multiple factors - How easy it was to load in your gear, the quality of the sound system, the level of hospitality, how grumpy the house sound guy was, the food, the money, if we were in a good mood that day … it goes on and on. I know what the green rooms look like (trust me, most of the time they don’t live up to the hype, but there are some epically inappropriate sharpie drawings). And I know what it’s like to be onstage in front of a raucous crowd, as well as in a room with tumbleweeds blowing across the dance floor. You may think I may be so biased that I don’t remember what it’s like to attend a show from a fan’s perspective. But I don’t really think I am. So, I’m going to do my best to review several venues within driving distance that I think meet the demands of both musicians and fans alike - Because that’s what makes for a great show.

A

Ithaca, NY - The Dock/ The Haunt/ Casita Ithaca has been my home for the past several years. It’s where Jimkata went through its early growing pains, eventually becoming a nationally touring band. The town itself serves as a great venue - a nurturing bubble for artists, musicians, intellectuals, and nature lovers - and is worth carving out a few extra hours to explore if you’re planning on

I’m going to say a little about a few venues here, since I have attachments to so many places in town: The Dock - Situated on the inlet of Cayuga Lake, this place (formerly known as Castaways) has been home to so many musical memories. It’s a simple setup - one floor, bar in the back, stage up front, low ceilings, good sound system, and, true to its name, a literal dock on the inlet side of the building where you can hang out and even pull a boat up if you’ve got one. For the past few years, I’ve taken part in Reggae Night every Wednesday, where you can find some of the region’s best musicians playing reggae classics and hidden gems. It’s a night known for collaboration, surprise guests, and high spirits. http://thedockithaca.com The Haunt - This venue is also on the water, where Cascadilla Creek meets the lake. You can catch national acts of all levels playing here - everything from buzzworthy indie bands to legends making a pit stop on their way to bigger cities. High ceilings and a slight elevation from the stage to the bar make for great sight and sound lines, even when it’s packed. If it gets too hot, step outside to the back deck right on the water. http://thehaunt.com Casita Del Polaris - It’s sort of a local secret that this intimate cocktail lounge-style venue can be a conduit for musical magic.

What used to be a small independent movie theater is now decked out with couches, local craft beer, wine and cocktails, and a new sound system. Check out the calendar and go early for dinner at its parent restaurant, North Star House. I always run into musician friends at the weekly Monday jam, hosted by an excellent group of players known as Galactic Escort Service. https://www.facebook.com/casitapolaris/

Brooklyn, NY - Rough Trade Records

Rough Trade Records Brooklyn, NY

Find a show to attend here and make a day of it. First of all, there is so much to see and do within a five-block radius in this area of Williamsburg that you could even see an early show here and catch a late show at a different venue. Brooklyn Bowl, Music Hall of Williamsburg, and Knitting Factory are all within walking distance. At Rough Trade, the entrance leads into a massive record store with all the latest releases and deep classic cuts. Go past the coffee stand, through the double doors and you’re in a small two-tiered music venue designed in that clean-cut-yetindustrial-looking style that typifies modern Brooklyn. I always enjoy the easy parking for bands (an added stressor when driving a van and trailer in NYC), multi-level green rooms, and nicely designed stage and PA. If you’re feeling fancy, grab a drink at the Wythe

Hotel beforehand. The expensive drinks are justified by the iconic view of the Manhattan skyline. http://www.roughtradenyc.com

Bouckville, NY - Ray Brothers Barbeque Where is Bouckville? I still don’t really know. Somewhere near Hamilton, NY where one country road meets another. All I can say is that the barbeque at Ray Brothers is made with love, and the wooden outdoor stage and accompanying lawn make for a great summer spot to see a show. They call it “The Yard Amphitheater,” and it’s a fitting name. If you proceed through the restaurant and out the back door, you’ll come upon the backyard, centered around an A-frame style stage. There’s an accompanying outdoor bar up front, as well as a few lawn games. The whole thing has a “make yourself at home” kind of vibe, like you just showed up to a friend’s big summer party. And that’s kind of what it is. Owners Tucker and Colin Ray are kind, hospitable, and since it’s a fairly new spot, I’ve gotten a chance to see the care they’ve put into its development since 2014. They have some shows coming up throughout September, so check the calendar and make sure you go there hungry. http://www.raybrothersbbq.com

FESTIVAL 2017

Festival season is wrapping up. School is here for kids and parents, alike. Although, it’s the time of the year to take the show indoors, LOCKN’ festival is the perfect way to celebrate the end of summer. However, LOCKN’ wasn’t all fun and games this year — we had a purpose. The festival is in Arrington, Virginia, just 40 miles from the recent tragedy in Charlottesville, Virginia. This year, organizers made it about helping humanity, too. LOCKN’ was able to use its wide audience to raise almost $19,000 in donations for the Heal Charlottesville Fund, as well as more than 2 tons in non-perishable foods. Organizers backed the message that Virginia is for lovers, and that Virginia is for everyone.

Album Review: ZONKEY by Umphrey’s McGee

Release Date: November 11, 2016

|

Genre(s): Progressive Pop-Rock, Heavy Jam

By Lonny Chin

If you haven’t listened to this album or Umphrey’s McGee in general, you should. Zonkey got me into Umphrey’s and, ultimately, jam music. Although it is a great collection of popular covers, the songs have been mashed up and tweaked just right by this five-piece jam band from Indiana. At least two or three of the 12 songs on Zonkey are complete opposites in genre, but are similar in the lyrics or meaning. The mashups include songs by various artists such as Michael Jackson, Chicago, The Talking Heads, Fleetwood Mac, AC/DC, Frank Zappa, Phil Collins, Metallica, Radiohead, Beck, Gorillaz, MGMT, The Weeknd, and many more. Although none of the songs are written by the band, the layout and arrangement of the mashups and the way the group decided to piece them together is astounding. Zonkey also exemplifies how versatile and diverse this band is, not just as a whole, but as individual musicians, being able to switch back and forth between these genres in the same song while following lead guitarist Jake Cinninger’s formidable solos. I first heard the album soon after it

came out in November 2016 and, after a few songs, I questioned what the band’s own music was like. After a quick search, I found a band that is able to do it all. They have a wide range in

sound coming from various influences, however, can set themselves apart from normal jam bands by playing “headbangers,” while still being able to play almost any genre. Shortly after I discovered Umphrey’s, I found myself going to see one of their shows at The

Palace in Albany. Umphrey’s McGee started out as a cover band in 1997 at the University of Notre Dame with original guitarist and vocalist Brendan Bayliss, bassist Ryan Stasik, keyboardist Joel Cummins, and drummer Mike Mirro. Shortly after, Andy Farag joined the group as percussionist in 1998 and Jake Cinninger joined on lead guitar in 2000. In 2002, the group released its first “real” studio album Local Band Does O.K. where they outsold every other band in album sales at the first Bonnaroo in 2002. Right after, Mike Mirro pursued medical school and was replaced by Kris Meyers who went on with the band to make eight more albums before Zonkey. Umphrey’s McGee has risen to become one of the largest jam bands around, headlining festivals along with two- to four-night runs with multiple sets per night. Although their studio tracks are ingeniously created and mastered, Umphrey’s McGee must be seen live with their spectacular light shows and onstage presence, which started these mashups at a Halloween show back in 2008, leading to Zonkey. Umphrey’s McGee shows are always a good time and will never disappoint! Catch them during their two-night run at The Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, NY, October 20 and 21!

The Fenimore House Art Museum on State Route 80. JULIE LEWIS | THE DAILY STAR

A Day Out in Cooperstown:

Fenimore Art Museum

By Alyssa Oliveri estled just outside of the village of Cooperstown sits an art museum that rivals museums of a much larger city. I pulled up to Fenimore Art Museum on a cloudy Friday morning. The seemingly quaint brick building was not indicative of what I would find inside. I stepped inside to meet with the museum’s director of marketing and communications, Todd Kenyon. The double grand staircase leading to exhibits immediately caught my eye, a work of art in itself. “Everyone can walk in and find something they like,” said Kenyon as we toured the building. I had to agree. Exhibits cater to lovers of music, history, art and even sports. The museum also offers workshops, theatrical performances, a local artist gallery, children’s programs, and lectures. The areas to explore seemed endless. Fenimore Art Museum began as the Fenimore House in 1944, when Stephen Carlton Clark donated a home to the New York State Historical Association to be used as a headquarters and museum. In 1968, the Fenimore House expanded by building a freestanding Library. They expanded again in 1995 to house the Eugene and Clare Thaw Native American Art Collection. In 1999, the Fenimore House changed its

name to Fenimore Art Museum. Exhibits tend to be smaller than those often found in museums of major cities. Because of this, Kenyon explained, organizers “like to tell the untold stories” by presenting a new angle on the genre or artist. A signature exhibit this summer highlighted the works of Andrew Wyeth, who would have celebrated his 100th birthday this year. The exhibit, called “Andrew Wyeth at 100: A Family Remembrance,” showcased his paintings, sketches, photos documenting his life, his belongings and more. Wyeth’s granddaughter worked closely with Fenimore Art Museum and gave presentations as part of the exhibition. The intimacy of this comprehensive exhibit was remarkable. In a similar vein, “The Art of Figure Skating Through the Ages: The Dick Button Collection” features a variety of ice skating art collected by Olympic gold medalist Dick Button. Pieces originate from the 1700s through contemporary times. The exhibit features fine art, photographs, costumes, vintage advertisements, skates and more - again, a close, immersive exhibit. The exhibit, which is open until December 31, is not to be missed. Other need-to-see, limited-time exhibits include:

• “Hamilton’s Final Act,” which presents a number of original letters between Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr along with other related documents. (Running through December 31) • “Our Strength is Our People: The Humanist Photographs of Lewis Hine,” which presents prints covering Hine’s career and captures pivotal moments in American History. (Running through December 31) Fenimore Art Museum has a number of excellent permanent exhibits, including The American Paintings Gallery, The American Folk Art Gallery, The Cooper Gallery and The Thaw Gallery. I ended my visit with what turned out to be my favorite stop: The Thaw Gallery, which features Native American artwork from North America. Kenyon emphasized the fact that the collection displays items of artistic quality, not just artifacts. I browsed clothing, jewelry, pottery, masks, carvings, baskets, ceremonial rattles and more dating as far back as the 1600s. As I explored the area, I stumbled into a room that appeared off-limits. The room was dark with floor-to-ceiling compartments housing items from the Thaw Collection. Noting the “open to the public” sign, I walked in. This area, the Study Center, holds the overflow of items not on display

in the gallery. With more than 800 pieces in the collection, the items displayed in the Thaw Gallery must rotate. A select number of pieces are currently on display at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. Fenimore Art Museum had record attendance in 2016, with more than 47,000 visitors. Visit this year and help them break that record in 2017 - you won’t regret it. I walked back to my car excited to share my experience with my husband (a lover of American history) and ready to plan a return trip!
