Returning players embracing new roles for Delhi
6
Every team faces the reality of having to replace graduated players from year to year. That task becomes more difficult when the players are as dominant as the ones the Delhi Bulldogs lost following the 2017 season. Delhi, last year’s Section IV Class D champion and Midstate Athletic Conference (MAC) runner-up, will be looking to replace 10 total players, including first team all-state selections Kaitlynn Finch and Logan Bruce. Finch is now playing soccer at Roanoke College in Salem, Virginia, and Bruce, the 2017 Daily Star Player of the Year, is beginning her track and field career at Ithaca College. “Logan and Kaitlynn were kind of our bookends and got a lot of the attention, but we lost 10 players in all, seven of them that were on the field all the time,” Delhi head coach Matt Albright said. “It’s almost an entirely new team this year.” Albright said he’s looking for returning players like Anna Post, Caroline Grace, Adrionna Cecce, Raegan Bracchy and Lindsay Whitbeck to take control of his 2018 squad. And in net, freshman Sylvia Liddle will be taking over for Finch. Whitbeck has already put her stamp on the new season by scoring an overtime game winner against MAC foe Unadilla Valley on Sept. 5., a game in which Post also found the back of the net. “These kids we have coming back have really latched on to their new role as the leaders of the team and are doing a nice job,” Albright said. “We want
SEPT. 10 AND 13, 2018
to win a MAC title and make a deep sectional run, but right now we’re focused on who we are going to be as a team and how we can all come together.” If Delhi is going to win a league title this season it’ll need to beat a group of talented teams. Unadilla Valley, last season’s MAC champion, looks to be strong again, along with Bainbridge-Guilford and Unatego. Unatego returns players like Morgan Newman, Paige McCoy, Hali Lucia and Dana Stepp in 2018, and has already topped the Bulldogs this season, 3-0. “We played alright against Unatego and they beat us, 3-0,” Albright said. “Morgan Newman is one of the staples on that team along with a couple of the other players, and coach (Sue) Herodes is just a great coach in general.” The Bulldogs face an uphill battle if they’re going to be crowned the 2018 MAC champion, but with players like Whitbeck, Post, Grace, Cecce and Bracchy returning, look for them to be in the mix with Unatego, B-G and UV.

TRI-VALLEY LEAGUE BOYS SOCCER
Milford welcomes back eight players from 2017 championship team Milford has a chance to repeat as this year’s defending league champions, but the Tri-Valley League is up for grabs in 2018. With eight players returning from last season’s Tri-Valley League championship squad, Milford has a lot to look forward to in 2018. Cian Hall, Garrett Mertz, Andrew White, Wynn Williams, Connor Stanford, Riley Stevens, Alex Guitterez and Jose Abuerto are all back for the Wildcats as they look to build on last season’s success. Coach Frank Spurchise said his team will look extremely similar, as they lost just two players to graduation. However, they have at least one massive hole to fill. “Losing a player like Finn Hall is really tough. He held things together for us last season,” Spurchise said. “We’re looking for a couple of kids with some experience to step in and fill his role on the team as a leader for this year.” Spurchise said the loss of Hall, a 2017 Daily Star AllStar, leaves his team searching for an identity as they try to build on last year’s success. “We’ve had to try and change some things up here early in the season to come up with an identity,” Spurchise said.”We have a lot of players back, but our scoring isn’t
where it needs to be right now.” The TVL is up for grabs this year. Laurens, the 2017 regular season champion, has appeared in two straight league title games, but the Leopards haven’t won the playoff title since 2006. The Leopards also lost leading scorer Taylor Murch to graduation following last season and will need to try and replace his goal scoring. Cherry Valley-Springfield, which failed to appear in the TVL title game for the first time in 12 years in 2017, is led by Jeb Magruder, Luke Dubben and Austin Yerdon. The Patriots also boast a sharp back line, consisting of Ian Johnson, Caleb Carpenter, Luke Loveland and Joe Pressly. Spurchise said Milford, along with Laurens, CV-S, Morris, Sharon Springs, Franklin and Edmeston are all teams that he expects to battle for the league crown, and he said Edmeston could be the dark horse. The Panthers return Parker Robinson, Logan Williams and goalkeeper Garrett Lum. Also back for Edmeston is talented sophomore Josh Martin. Martin will look to build on his 2017 season that saw him emerge as a multi-talented scoring threat for the Panthers.

DELAWARE LEAGUE GIRLS SOCCER
South Kortright looks to continue Delaware League dominance Much like Delaware League boys soccer, the story of DL girls soccer has been South Kortright’s recent dominance. SK has won five straight league titles and posted an undefeated league record (9-0) on its way to a 13-3-1 regular season in 2017. Bella DuBois, Jordan Finch and Anna Reinshagen return as seniors from last year’s team along with juniors Emily Burns and Sonia Reeves and sophomores Lila Shafer, Lauryn Schmid and Mya Stelmashuck. “Those players coming back are huge for us,” South Kortright head coach Josh Burroughs said. “We’re going to be trying to fill a few holes left by the players we lost.” The Rams will rely on those returning players to try and replace some of the scoring that is gone from last year’s team. SK will be without 2017 leading scorer Akyra Olsen, Emily Burgher and Alexis Redden, losing all three to graduation. “Those three players are all Delaware League All-Stars and leave a hole right down the middle of the team,” Burroughs said. “But, we have a solid group of girls returning for us and we hope to be competitive again within the league.” Unlike some previous years, South Kortright doesn’t necessarily come into 2018 as the heavy favorite in the DL. One team looking to knock them from their place atop the league is Downsville. Emily Brown, Kenzey Hammond, Mackenzie Burnham, Madison Ackerly, Cheyanne Ryder, Kailee Young, Alishia Trauschold, Olivia Brunner and Zelda Adams are all back for the Eagles. Luccia Martucci will also be making her return to the field. She had been on varsity since her eighth-grade season before missing 2017 due to injury. “We get nine starters back plus Luccia, which is a huge bonus,” Downsville head coach Burt Reed said. “We have a lot of talent on the field and share the ball really well. I think that helps us a lot.” Ackerly and Adams were both named 2017 Daily Star All-Stars for their performance last season. That plus the addition of Martucci makes Downsville a real threat to knock off SK for the first time in five years. “It’ll be an interesting season,” Reed said. “We had a chance to beat them last season and ended up letting in two late goals. We just need to learn how to get big wins as a team.”
South Kortright’s Anna Reinshagen works to clear the ball against Windham in the Delaware League girls soccer championship on Oct. 14.

DELAWARE LEAGUE BOYS SOCCER
South Kortright boys looking for their third straight league title in 2018 Eight of the last 12 Delaware League boys soccer titles have been won outright by the South Kortright Rams, and the team looks poised to challenge for its third in a row in 2018. SK returns key contributors from last year’s squad that won both the regular season and postseason titles in 2017. Derek Burns, Stanley Andersen, Chris Champlin, Logan Kaufman, Quinlan Davis, Xander Andradeds, goaltender Aidan Fox and last year’s Delaware League title game hero, Charlie Kuhn, will all be back in blue and white for the Rams. The biggest challenge SK will face will be replacing what they lost from last year’s squad that fell in the state semifinals to Mount Academy. Tyler Swantak, who earned fifth-team AllState honors in 2017, is gone, as is Conor Woz-
nick and Daily Star All-Star Dawson Darling. “We lost a couple of good players from last year but I’m seeing improvement from this team this year,” SK coach Bob VanValkenburgh said. “I think our defense was a concern coming in, but I also think we are going to be pretty well rounded.” Burns and Andersen will need to shoulder a good amount of the load this season if they are going to make another deep run, but look for Kaufman, Kuhn and track and field standout Mike Premura-Milton to make contributions as well. Fox has been splitting time in net with Sophomore Brandon Grommeck to start the year, but he gives the Rams the experience needed along the back. Perhaps the team with the best chance at dethroning the Rams from atop the Delaware League is last year’s championship game oppo-

nent, Hunter-Tannersville. H-T lost sweeper Kody Leach and midfielder Richard Kenneally from 2017’s squad but returns most of its goal scoring. Last season’s leading goal scorer, Jason McDevitt, returns after tallying 15 goals a year ago. Goaltender Chris Lagzdins is back for the Wildcats. Lagzdins racked up six shutouts and six more one-goal games in net last year. Zane Lewis and Kaeden Leach are also back for H-T, giving them a well-rounded unit. Coach Brent Dearing says his team expects to compete for the league title again this year and make another trip to the Section IV playoffs. Margaretville and Roxbury will also look to build on last year’s respective third and fourth place regular season finishes, but it will take a lot for anyone to knock off South Kortright.

MAC LEAGUE BOYS SOCCER
Walton, Delhi, Greene to battle for MAC league title

Delhi and Greene have gone back and forth over the past three years, trading Midstate Athletic Conference (MAC) championships since 2014. Last season it was Greene that topped the Bulldogs at Wright National Soccer Campus, 3-0, to earn the crown. This season Delhi will be looking for revenge. Coach Eddie Kingston is back on the sideline for the Bulldogs after taking a year off in 2017. Sophomore Alex Haight returns to lead the way up top for Delhi and is joined by Paul Avila and captain Tristan Olson. Also returning for Delhi is Jasper Koota. Koota missed almost all of last season with a knee injury but is ready to go in 2018. “We are trying to pick up where we left off last year,” Kingston said. “Jasper (Koota), Paul Avila and Tristan (Olson) all understand my philosophy. We’re not trying to change a lot of stuff though, just trying to keep what worked last year.” The Bulldogs have key players returning but

also lost a fair amount of depth to graduation. Daily Star All-Star Ben Arehart graduated after last season along with all four starting defensemen. Kingston said defense is a question mark for his team, but he has faith in the newcomers along the back. “Any time you lose a kid like Ben in goal, it leaves a big hole, but I think every team has its own identity. We have a goaltender that will do well this year,” Kingston said. “It’s important that those kids back there all jell as a unit.” Goaltender Logan Bryan will be replacing Arehart in net and looking to solidify the back while Haight and sophomore Aidan Paoli work up top. Delhi’s biggest threat to returning to the MAC championship game is also probably its biggest rival, Walton. The Warriors finished 2017 with an overall record of 10-6-2, including two one-goal losses to the Bulldogs. “We need to be able to handle Delhi if we’re
going to be able to win our side of the conference,” Walton coach Justin Preston said. “Haight up top gives them so much explosiveness that it is tough to contain.” Walton returns 13 seniors to its 2018 roster, including leading scorer Tommy Maguire.
Unlike Delhi, the Warriors are bringing back their entire defensive unit and goaltender. Sweeper Brett Charles, stopper Lucas Walley and outside defenders Zach Koviello and Vinnie Escobar are all back. Goaltender Kaiden Vernold is also returning. “There is a hump we need to be able to get over to get to Greene and Delhi,” Preston said. “Those two teams are so tough but I think we can do it if we play well as a team.”
