Out of the Texan’s margins Former staffers paved way for minority journalists. By Tiana Woodard @tianarochon

Editor’s Note: To better our own diversity and inclusion efforts, we interviewed some of the first minority reporters to work at The Daily Texan. For UT journalism professor Erna Smith, The Daily Texan’s fall 1971 newsroom and the margins of its daily publications shared one similarity: They lacked color. Smith’s first conclusions about the workspace were interrupted by an introduction from Lori Rodriguez, a 1972 UT alumna and the newspaper’s first Hispanic editor-in-chief. In hindsight, Smith said seeing another woman of color in the newsroom was what ultimately convinced her to join the Texan “Just (Rodriguez) coming out of her desk when she saw me and shaking my hand made a big difference,” Smith said. “It makes a difference what the diversity

Raising Voices: Same paper, new commitment Editor’s Note: As three minority members of The Daily Texan, we’re coming together in a new Diversity and Inclusion Board to tackle the lack of representation and microaggressions we’ve all faced. As an extension of Texan management, we’re working to make the newsroom more diverse and inclusive for everyone, but especially for students of underrepresented backgrounds of race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, gender, sexuality and religion. Increasing workforce diversity is a difficult and often abstract task, so we want to actually outline our goals:

Foster a diverse and inclusive newsroom

Diversifying our newsroom will require reaching out to people who may not even know we exist and giving them the opportunity to work for us. We also hope to serve as advocates and mediators for staffers, especially when they may be too uncomfortable to speak up about conflicts.

We will present this vision to the Texas Student Media Board, which oversees all campus media, and to the University community to ensure diversity remains a priority for future Texan leaders.

Being the daughter of refugees has always made me acutely aware of the freedom I had in using my own voice. I joined The Daily Texan because I wanted to use my voice to uplift those who aren’t as lucky or privileged. But before we share marginalized voices, we need to listen to them. Here at the Texan, we need to do a better job of listening. If readers can’t see themselves in our pages or staff members feel silenced, then we are failing at upholding the values which journalism is rooted in: Accountability, empathy and fairness. We owe it to our campus community and very own staff members to start listening — actively, consistently and with the intent to do better.

When I first became a senior reporter for the news department, I was the only Latina and immigrant on the senior staff. That’s when I realized why my friends criticized the Texan so much. How could they connect to our news coverage if most of our staffers had little to no knowledge of their experiences? Since then, I have worked with the rest of the newsroom to make sure people like my friends can also see themselves reflected in our coverage. But these strides shouldn’t disappear when I eventually leave the Texan. Raising the voices of those who are unheard should always be a priority, especially in a college newsroom, where the next set of journalists and world leaders are being trained and informed.

Speaking with the many Texan minority alumni for my story confirmed the reason that I’ve stayed at The Daily Texan for these four, long, testing semesters: I can’t expect change without being a part of the change. And by being a part of the newspaper’s new Diversity and Inclusion Board, I firmly believe that I’ll be fulfilling my mission as a journalist: educating the people with an encompassing, diverse narrative of our world. Journalism cannot exist without diversity, and we are doing a great injustice to our readers by not doing enough to change this. As a student paper, we need to be just that — a paper that represents each and every person at The University of Texas at Austin.

The bright yellow bandannas from the #WeBelieve campaign that were wrapped around Austin City Council members’ mic stands stood out as an uncommon gesture of support Thursday as the Council listened to the emotional pleas of rape survivors to make their stories of injustice heard. In a unanimous vote of approval, the City Council passed a resolution to evaluate the Austin Police Department’s processing and investigating of reported sexual assaults. The city manager now has six months to find a third-party agency to perform the evaluation. Council member Alison Alter, who introduced the resolution, said Thursday night’s vote was a step in the right direction toward addressing sexual assault in Austin. “People came out and they recognized sexual assault is a problem in our community,” Alter said. “It’s happening disproportionately to women, and there’s a feeling in the system that we are not responding appropriately to bring justice

“exceptionally cleared.” A case is exceptionally cleared when law enforcement knows the identity and location of a suspect and has probable cause, but cannot make the arrest. Reasons for exceptional clearance include a suspect’s death or a victim’s refusal to

prosecute, according to the National Incident-Based Reporting System. Jennifer Ecklund, an attorney at Thompson & Knight, is representing former and current UT students in a lawsuit against the Travis County District Attorney’s office and APD, claiming they faced gender-based discrimination in the handling of their sexual assault cases. “For my clients who have spoken at City Council before and again (Thursday) night...(it’s) a measure of hope for their voices to be heard after so many years,” Ecklund said. “I think (Thursday) night they finally felt heard.” Manley said he looks forward to working with the City Council and the community, and that the evaluation aligns with what leaders of the department wanted. “This review will allow us to take a holistic review of how we are handling sexual assault cases in our community so that we’re all working towards what we all want, and that is justice,” Manley said. Alter did not specify when the evaluation by the selected agency would be completed, as it depends on the final contract with the independent agency.

On Friday, ethnomusicology graduate student Jeongin Lee gave a presentation to a room full of her peers on the role of music in the Korean feminist movement and the evolution of the feminist soundscape in the context of protest. The presentation was the semester’s first event of the history department’s Symposium on Gender, History and Sexuality, which gives graduate students studying those topics the opportunity to receive constructive criticism they can incorporate into their dissertations. After writing her master’s thesis at Texas A&M University, Lee was admitted to UT’s Butler School of Music. “I saw some professors from UT in some conferences and I really liked their work and wanted to work with them,” Lee said. As a Korean woman, Lee said she was inspired to study the music associated with protest and the role music plays in the creation of a collective identity for protesters by the feminist movement in her home country. “There was always something that I can relate to within the feminist movement, so I could reflect my own experience through their music and the soundscape of their protest,” Lee said. “I can also document the activities of the protesters to keep their voices alive and circulating.”

Graduate students can find a safe space to talk about their work in a more laid-back setting at the symposium, said Eddie Watson, one of the symposium’s coordinators. “A lot of the academic conferences and talks can seem a bit formal and intimidating, so we really want a place where graduate students can get feedback on their own work in a bit more of a friendly environment while also keeping that academic rigor,” said Watson, a modern British social and cultural history graduate student. Graduate students from any department can participate in the symposium as long as their subject area relates to gender and sexuality, which makes for an interdisciplinary space with students of diverse backgrounds and perspectives, said Paula O’Donnell, member of the symposium’s planning committee. “It’s such a great learning experience and you get to really see how gender and sexuality can be a lens of study in different fields,” O’Donnell said. Lee said she finds the presence of students from various fields helpful. “I usually present my paper at the Ethnomusicology Society, so I want to try to present something and get feedback from my colleagues in other disciplines,” Lee said. The symposium’s next presentation will be held Friday, Feb. 15.

Fifth annual Energy Week

This week, energy experts from across industry, academia and government sectors will gather on campus to speak at the 2019 UT Energy Week. “UT Energy Week is a joint effort between the Longhorn Energy Club and UT’s Energy Institute, to host a diverse group of panelists, moderators, keynote speakers and energy experts,” said Jenny Sauer, vice chair of Longhorn Energy Club. Sauer, an energy and earth resources and business administration graduate student, said the conference can be summed up with two key phrases: “Diversity of energy topics” and “student-run.” “It’s a conference about energy topics that are of great student interest,” Sauer said. “The idea is to host dialogue on

campus across a broad range of energy topics to encourage education among students, faculty and industry.” Now in its fifth year, UT Energy Week 2019 will focus on three main themes: energy politics and security, emerging technologies and solutions, and navigating dynamic markets. In previous years, roughly 300–500 people have shown up to the conference, and organizers are expecting the same this year, said Varun Rai, director of the UT Energy Institute. “We really believe we are the premier energy institution of the world, and part of that belief is sharing that joy and richness externally,” Rai said. “An event like this goes a really long way in sharing what we are learning and doing.” The conference will include panels on topics ranging from the politics of carbon pricing to funding renewable energy infrastructure in Africa, a research poster

competition and networking opportunities for students. There will be around 50 speakers this year, said Matthew Haley, president of Longhorn Energy Club. “We have a mix of speakers and perspectives from the academia, industry and government spheres,” said Haley, a public affairs and earth and energy resources graduate student. “We really value a diversity of opinions at this conference.” One thing that will be new and exciting at this year’s conference is the addition of an energy and economics standup comedian as one of the panelists, Haley said. Haley said the content of the conference was developed by students in the Longhorn Energy Club. “The conference is completely curated by a group of students,” Haley said. “We work with some faculty and advisory to

try to help us make connections, but the actual themes of the conference are developed by student volunteers.” Haley said in doing this, he hopes to reach one of this year’s main goals — to attract more students. “The main idea of doing that is to hopefully survey some ideas that are interesting to students,” Haley said. “My hope is that the panels we have at this conference are appealing to students.” Sauer said she hopes this conference will be a learning experience for industry professionals, students and others interested in energy. “What the Longhorn Energy Club is all about is getting people in different areas of the energy industry to learn from each other,” Sauer said. “We hope that people will walk away from this conference with a broad view of the biggest issues and opportunities happening in energy right now.”

Students face difficulty playing Call of Duty, Nintendo Switch on UT Wi-Fi By Tehya Rassman @tehyarassman

While 70 percent of college students play video games at least “once in a while,” according to the Pew Research Center, some games are impossible to play on the University’s Wi-Fi. Undeclared freshman Tiago Grimaldi Rossi said when he tried to play certain games online, such as “Call of Duty: Black Ops 4” and “Destiny 2,” a pop-up on his

computer said “your NAT types are not compatible.” Network Address Translation, or NAT, is one problem students face when playing games on campus. At UT, there are only a certain amount of internet addresses shared among the student population. NAT allows for one IP address to be used for an entire private network. Where your house may have one internet address shared by family and friends, the University has many addresses shared by thousands, according to

William Green, director of networking and telecommunications for ITS. “Any large place has to use Network Address Translation to share those (internet addresses) among everybody,” Green said. “At any given instant during the day, we see about 70,000 devices connecting on (our network), and over a semester, we see 200,000 devices connecting.” When creating a game, developers often use either client-to-client or

client-to-server models. Games developed with the client-to-client model, which requires gamers to connect directly to other gamers, do not work on campus, said Jason Wang, senior information technology manager for ITS. When a gamer outside UT tries to reach students connected to the Wi-Fi, the NAT system remaps that student’s real address. “Most home routers have DMZ and/or port-mapping configuration options that allow you to manually create

that mapping,” Wang said. “The DMZ and port-mapping configuration options are not something we are able to offer at scale on something the size of the University’s Wi-Fi.” Students also reported having issues playing Nintendo Switch games, which run under this client-to-client model. “The issue that we are seeing with some of these titles is they’re expecting to be able to establish direct client-to-client connections,” Wang said. “That’s where

traversing that NAT perimeter becomes difficult.” Students should have no issue playing games with client-to-server models, such as “Fortnite” and “World of Warcraft.” In client-to-server games, gamers connect to a server that is usually run by the game publisher or a game console company. “Everyone’s able to establish connections to a common server, and the server communicates conversations back to all the connected players,” Wang said.

The only story necessary to understand Student Government on the Forty Acres: The most popular proposal in SG history was undoubtedly a representative’s attempt to replace the entire student assembly with visiting speakers from a Dallas Community College. No wonder why Herrera and so many others want a change. At its best, SG can be a launching pad of great ideas and programs that help Longhorns succeed, stay safe and find a home on our campus. But at its worst, it can suck the air out of a room and turn a healthy debate into something that doesn’t serve anyone or fix anything. Our assembly hasn’t handled every issue perfectly. There are certainly important issues that, for one reason or another, we have not addressed or have not addressed adequately. However, we’ve done a lot good, too. I proudly point to our efforts to increase interpersonal violence prevention training on campus, or the fight for more financial literacy, as important first steps to building a campus that helps everyone succeed. But I’ve also seen the worst of our campus political culture. Demonstrations that create a sense of otherness. Disgusting graffiti on mosques and synagogues where Longhorns go to worship. Hurtful comments, sometimes meant as jokes, about who a person loves or who a person is. Violence, in acts big and small, against those who don’t fit the cookie-cutter mold of what a Longhorn is supposed to look like. The solution is not to restrict expression, but rather establish a political discourse based on what we have in common instead of on the differences that divide us. When we choose to look at issues, such as the rising cost of student living, as our enemy instead of each other, I believe we can fix the issues that affect us all. The solution is not empty statements. The solution is the recognition Student Government cannot possibly be the sole voice of students. Instead, voices from West Campus to Riverside must speak up for our common interests. The solution is not arbitrarily-drawn battle lines in which students from one segment of campus cannot work together to solve issues without fear of backlash. On the other hand, the solution is not to ignore these issues altogether either. The solution is to realize that good politics requires an insistent belief in our common humanity. A realization that sometimes the most unlikely of coalitions can bring about enduring change. That a Jewish student and a sorority girl are both at a loss when West Campus isn’t safe. Barbara Jordan famously said, “I get from the soil and the spirit of Texas the feeling that I, as an individual, can accomplish whatever I want, and that there are no limits.” I couldn’t agree more. When I first stepped foot on the Forty Acres, I fell in love with this spirit of possibility. It keeps me hopeful that we can create a campus where everyone is welcomed into the fold. This vision is bold. These challenges are immense. But I truly think that a political culture that prioritizes respect for each other is not only possible, but coming sooner than we think. Rizvi is a government junior.

In recent years, the leftist ideology rampant on college campuses has been at the center of many controversies. My beloved alma mater, the University of Texas at Austin, has been no exception. And yet, a recent article argues that “UT is not a liberal campus.” To defend this claim, the author writes the administration’s policies are “an affront” to the First Amendment rights of “liberal-based activism.” The author is correct — some of UT’s policies limit free speech rights, but he fails to recognize that these onerous policies suppress all political speech, not simply the kind the author may prefer. The First Amendment even protects ideas that the author claims “violate the very values of diversity and inclusion.” Free speech means nothing unless it extends to unpopular speech. According to a poll conducted by The Daily Texan before the 2016 presidential election, 64 percent of UT students preferred Hillary Clinton while only 10 percent preferred Donald Trump. This is to be expected, but what about the school itself? Research from Campus Reform, a conservative higher education publication, found that 94.7 percent of donations by UT employees went to Democratic candidates or organizations in 2017-2018. I think it’s safe to say that UT has an fairly liberal administration. So why do some claim UT is not a liberal campus? Because, according to them, the beliefs of the school’s administration don’t match their actions. The reason for this is not their secret conservative sympathies. Their status as a public university constitutionally prohibits UT from silencing students who don’t agree with the prevailing orthodoxy. As a state school, UT is required to protect and defend the free speech of all its students, regardless of the personal views administrators hold. During my time at UT, I served as the chairwoman of Young Conservatives of Texas, a group that works to promote traditional, conservatives values on campus. The conservative students in YCT are an outspoken minority among their peers. We are often attacked by our fellow students because we dare to assert conservative ideas on a hostile campus. Regardless of whether the school agrees with our ideas, we are, and will continue to be, a vocal minority of the student body. We also have the same First Amendment freedoms as other students, and to the extent that the University violates those rights, it is their failing, not ours. It’s not the school’s job to support anyone’s political agenda; it’s their job to protect everyone’s rights. The author raises an important point about burdensome requirements on student organization events. According to the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education, UT has concerning speech policies which have resulted in a lawsuit launched by Speech First, a national group that advocates for free speech on college campuses. These policies chill the speech of all students, and students should join together to fight those policies. What you can’t do is demand that the University apply policies unequally and discriminate based on viewpoint. Equal protection of free speech is essential on college campuses. Universities are places for debate, ideas, discussion and disagreement. Students who are never exposed to ideas they disagree with will learn nothing. Ideological orthodoxy on campus prevents students from learning to contend with their beliefs. Students who engage with their opponents come out better for it. Despite UT’s liberal administration, the First Amendment still reigns, to the benefit of all of its students. Vaughan is a UT alumna and former chairwoman of the UT chapter of YCT.

In a Daily Texan opinion piece last week, University Democrats president Andrew Herrera argued that there is disconnect between the issues that UT students care about and the positions taken by UT’s administration. This is based on the opinion that most UT students are liberal, which is true. Herrera labels any speech he disagrees with as “offensive.” Instead of offering arguments for his views, Mr. Herrera advocates for silencing and defamation of the opposition by the University administration. If Herrera is indicative of the “progressive” coalition in the student body, then it appears we have an even bigger disconnect on hand — between what conservatives actually believe versus what Herrera and company think conservatives believe. The activism by the Young Conservatives of Texas that Mr. Herrera quotes is taken out of context. He oddly links a demonstration questioning in-state tuition benefits for undocumented students with members of the migrant caravan being tear gassed at the Southern border. Later on, Herrera insists that we are in a “dark place.” He proclaims “nothing can be done to move UT in the morally right direction” as long as a former Republican sits on the Board of Regents. This is a call for conservatives to be silenced and expelled from our campus and administration. That would be easier than actually engaging in dialogue with them, wouldn’t it? The truth is, the vast majority of participants in the pro-Kavanaugh demonstrations were not patriarchal manipulators seeking to defend rapists — they were people concerned with the value of due process and worried about the harm done by the court of public opinion. Why engage in honest conversation about these nuanced issues when you can just cry “bigot!” and have the University do the dirty work of censorship for you? Does this sound like diversity of thought? Do these views offer a remedy to our polarized political climate? No. At best, it’s a deep misunderstanding of conservatism. At worst, it’s a cynical attack. At some point, if we want to have civil discourse and honest conversation, we have to give the other side the benefit of the doubt, even if we don’t agree with them. The last thing I want is for people like Herrera to be censored. I’m going to give him the benefit of the doubt. It appears Herrera has conviction, and really believes in something. But that does not justify his contorted view of conservatism. Conservatism is about God-given rights, the sacredness of human life, the importance of hard work and the value of tradition. Of course not every conservative upholds these values, but that’s besides the point. It’s not about the bigotry and racism Herrera might try to lead you to believe. I invite you to not let conviction get in the way of understanding. Let it be a call to humility, a call for open conversation. Let’s assume the best intentions of each other. It’s possible to disagree with someone without recklessly attacking their character. Next time you see a student group you disagree with, whether it be the Young Conservatives of Texas, the University Democrats, or whoever, try to give them the benefit of the doubt. Try to understand the issues they raise and the perspectives they can offer. UT will only become a “dark place” if free speech and different thinking is stifled. Let’s encourage diversity of thought instead of smothering it out. It’s not an American ideal, it’s just the right thing to do. Simon is a mechanical engineering graduate student.

The question of what qualifies as a “veritable” assault on free speech is one that has been increasingly blurred, in part by the actions of our national administration both prior to 2016 and after, as well as by the actions, or lack thereof, by our University administration. The University of Texas at Austin touts ideals of across-the-aisle conversations, civility and being an center for free thought, but the fact remains that the voices which take precedence in University policy are those that align with our administration’s ivory tower. Seemingly progressive is not progressive. The wide dissatisfaction amongst UT students when concerning the state of speech on campus is one charged with frustration and expectancy as our administration continues to guard its right-winged martyrs and ignore the true aim of free speech, which is to inform. While it’s true that speech is meant to invite and challenge, let us remember that speech without any substantial aim to educate is on par with frivolity. As per University policy Chapter 13. Speech, Expression, and Assembly, subchapter 13-200, Section 13-204. Harassment, d., “The harassment that this section prohibits does not exhaust the category of speech that is unnecessary and inappropriate to vigorous debate in a diverse community of educated people.” So, herein lies the crux. What exactly constitutes as “unnecessary” and “inappropriate?” Affirmative action bake sales and “Catch an Immigrant Day” are certainly not mere forms of peaceful protest or the disbursement of opposing ideas from educated persons. They are events meant to incite anger through the derision of their fellow peer’s most integral sense of self. Some would argue that it is easier to ignore the Young Conservatives of Texas and their disparaging antics, but this is the danger in and of itself. Failure to address what is “unnecessary” and “inappropriate” has led to ambivalence and complacency from our administration. They have conflated “unnecessary” and “inappropriate” speech with “free” speech in efforts to practice a civicism which puts protective priority on aimless, hateful speech. We attend this University with the intention of being educated. It is the University’s responsibility to demonstrate how educated minds conduct themselves in the face of division and politicization. Our administration has the power to unify our student body, or divide it via their decisions. If free speech is under attack, it is the silenced voices that are suffering: Our students of color, our undocumented students, our peers living with trauma, our classmates who work to put themselves through college — not those who are continually awarded a platform to speak. The salient issue for the administration to consider is as follows: Does the University of Texas at Austin value equality or equity? There is clear cognitive dissonance in what our administration does and what it attempts to sell, and if steps are not taken forth to ameliorate this issue, then the answer is clear. Texas was skating on thin ice prior to Saturday’s 76-67 win. The Longhorns went into Norman following a disappointing 64-58 loss to West Virginia at home. Their second loss in conference play left a bad taste in their mouth going into a Red River rivalry game that never fails to bring intensity. Forwards Joyner Holmes and Jatarie White emerged as the stars of the game. White led the team in scoring while Holmes had another double-double. Serving as twin towers for Texas, their size is able to give them an advantage over a majority of the conference. “I thought (Holmes and White) had a presence tonight,” head coach Karen Aston said. “(They) were the difference in the game.” Their presence was certainly felt down low in the paint, where they scored 40 of their 76 points. Half of those came from White and Holmes. Along with it, Texas was able to come running out of the gate — an area of struggle for the Longhorns in previous games. “We came out with a lot of energy,” White said. “We were hyping each other up and it transferred to the first quarter.” Just as White felt the energy, it didn’t go unrecognized by Aston. “The thing I was most pleased about was the way we started the game,” Aston said. “We’ve had some slow starts lately. We had the right energy and mentality.” Danni Williams had a good game as well, shooting 50 percent from downtown. With Williams

of the room looks like. (If it wasn’t for her,) I might have just not went into the room.” But Smith isn’t alone — many minority journalists have defied the challenges of a homogenous industry to introduce their unique perspectives into print. And some of these pioneers’ journeys began at the Texan. The University’s past policies of segregation facilitated a long history of exclusion in the Texan newsroom. Griff Singer, a retired senior lecturer at UT who worked at the newspaper as a student in the early 1950s, said diversity at the time was never discouraged — rather, it was simply not possible. “The lack of diversity in terms of color was never a fault of the Texan,” Singer said. “The Texan, historically, has generally been an open organization that hasn’t methodically tried to keep diversity from happening on the staff.” Along with discriminatory legislation, familial expectations also prevented some aspiring journalists from initially joining the industry. 1963 journalism alumnus Fernando Dovalina, a son of working class Mexican immigrants, attended college with the intentions of becoming a pharmacist before a professor at Laredo Junior College (now Laredo Community College) noticed that his “sparse writing style” was suitable for reporting. “All it took was one, single person,” Dovalina said. “(My professor) thought I was a good writer, and she changed my life.” A space long accessible to solely white and some Hispanic students, the Texan became more integrated following UT’s admission of its first black undergraduates in 1956. Amongst the first black undergraduates to attend the Forty Acres were also aspiring journalists, including Dr. Leon McNealy, a radiation oncologist and 1963 journalism alumnus. While reporting for the Texan as a wire editor, McNealy said the Texan newsroom gave him freedom of expression within a college atmosphere which made him the victim of attempted lynchings and arrests. “The Texan was sort of an oasis — it wasn’t heaven — but you could see it like that,” McNealy said. “Here you are in this atmosphere where you could be killed,

or injured, or hurt, and no one would give a s--t, but it gave me an outlet to express myself.” Part of McNealy’s freedom of thought included “Dear Momma,” a column in which he painted a satirical picture of the University’s segregated campus life for his majority-white audience. His presence at the Texan gave readers a new perspective, but McNealy said at least one Texan editor disapproved of the column. “I remember standing on the steps of the journalism building and him telling me he hadn’t made up his mind on segregation and desegregation yet,” McNealy said. “He pressured me into stopping (“Dear Momma”), but of course, I didn’t.” In addition to publishing varying staff perspectives such as McNealy’s, the Texan of the ‘70s, starting from Rodriguez’s leadership from 1971 to 1972, made it imperative to publish marginalized opinions outside of staff. The editorial board began publishing “guest viewpoint” columns from members of students organizations, including the Black Students Union, Young Socialist Alliance and Mexican American Youth Organization. Accompanying Rodriguez as some of the newspaper’s first leaders of color was Sylvia Moreno, managing editor in the fall semester of 1974 and 1975 journalism alumna. The former Washington Post reporter said that as a first-generation Latina student, the Texan gave her vital experience and networking opportunities in a field dominated by advantaged whites. “Part of my college world was where you get a real job to support yourself in a professional way,” Moreno said. “Some kids are lucky enough where they can come to Washington and be interns for free because their families can afford to put them up while they’re getting experience and not getting paid.” This professionalism in the newsroom extended into the 1980s with staffers such as 1984 journalism alumnus Roger Campbell, the paper’s first black editor-in-chief. Campbell’s prioritization of professionalism over politics was seen by some readers as right-winged reporting, which earned him some negative feedback from UT’s liberal campus. However, Campbell said the file full of “nasty” letters and other malicious responses he received confirmed he was doing something right.

“I remember reading in college that a Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist’s quote was, ‘When you make people mad, you make people think,’” Campbell said. “Making people mad didn’t phase me, as long as they were mad for a legitimate reason.” As the Texan grew in size throughout the 1990s, its staff reflected the campus’ increasing diversity to include students of more backgrounds. International business alumnus and former Texan photo editor Khue Bui, a 1995 international business alumnus and former Texan photo editor, found both racial diversity and diverse perspectives of thought, which helped guide his reporting for certain stories. “(Staffers) could say, ‘Well have you thought about this or have you thought about that idea?’” Bui said. “Taking it into a realm you don’t necessarily think of when you first approach a story.” While differences in race, religion and class might have had quicker acceptance in newsrooms, Dovalina said affiliation with the LGBTQ+ community took much longer for journalists to openly express. During his 31 years at the Houston Chronicle, homophobic incidents such as when a staffer told others to “let the queer die” instead of saving him from choking made Dovalina less open about being gay. “We had gay and lesbian members on our staff at the Houston Chronicle, but that doesn’t mean there was complete acceptance,” Dovalina said. “It was very difficult for the staff members who were gay, lesbian, transgender or all the other categories to be open.” After working at the Texan, some former staffers such as Dovalina worked to bring more diverse reporting into the newsrooms they worked at upon graduation. Dovalina, as a crime reporter for The Beaumont Enterprise, integrated the newspaper’s all-white birth record, a risky move he said the staff didn’t notice, but Beaumont’s black community must have. “I bet someone (reading the birth records) that morning said, ‘Look, honey, our babies’ births are in the paper,” Dovalina said. “‘So maybe things are changing.’” Despite efforts to diversify newsrooms, the American Society of News Editors 2018 survey reported that people of color represented 22.6 percent of newsrooms surveyed. Disadvantages in networking and a

Roger Campbell, a 1984 UT alumnus and the Texan’s first black editor-in-chief, prioritized professionalism over politics in his election campaign. lack of belonging experienced by journalists of color has prevented the industry from diversifying, said Tracey Everbach, a journalism professor at the University of North Texas and 2000 UT journalism alumna. “Bigger news organizations have made efforts to diversify, but if you take all newsrooms across the country, you’re looking at all kinds of small news organizations where they probably have one person of color or none,” Everbach said. Angela Shah, a 1994 journalism alumna and the managing editor in 1993, has been one of these few people of color in the newsroom. Familiar with

situations in which she was “the only (Indian-American),” Shah said she didn’t realize the negative implications of such a reality until she started her career. Bui’s solution to combating such situations is similar to Shah’s: Maintaining a presence in the newsroom despite a lack of inclusion. Although everyone is entitled to an opinion, the former “Associated Press” and “Newsroom” photographer said critiquing the current diversity issues in newsrooms from the sidelines does little. “Being a part of (the issue) and trying to change things is significantly more helpful,” Bui said. “At that point you can understand

the operations of the system. If you find them inappropriate, make the change yourself.” Many changes still need to be made to improve diversity and inclusion. But even more than having an effect on those in the newsroom, Bui said changing newsrooms’ lack of diversity will accurately educate readers about the world. “(Diverse reporting is) not about educating just yourself,” Bui said. “It’s about educating the rest of society, about the differences of people and getting them to understand (them). I really hope you get a ton of people in that newsroom who want to change the world.”

SIGMA ALPHA EPSILON IS CLOSED AT THE UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS STUDENT MEMBERS AND ALUMNI ADVISORS RESIGN MEMBERSHIP Sigma Alpha Epsilon National Fraternity has placed this ad as continued courtesy to the University of Texas at Austin and City of Austin communities. In November 2017, Sigma Alpha Epsilon closed its chapter at the University of Texas. When the chapter was closed, all student members of the group were suspended from the Fraternity indefinitely. As a result of their suspension, all students lost their membership rights in SAE. As this community was previously informed, the chapter was closed due to health and safety violations and systemic cultural issues incongruent with the mission and values of Sigma Alpha Epsilon. “Health and safety” is the umbrella nomenclature covering subject matter associated with risk management violations, including hazing. The concerns were numerous, ongoing, and created significant risk for members and guests of the chapter. The University conducted an independent investigation that identified and corroborated the issues, and that report is accessible through an open records request. While portions of the report are redacted pursuant to FERPA, the investigation found serious, high risk behaviors. After the continued and blatant use of SAE trademarks without the permission of SAE, Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity filed a federal trademark infringement action against the former Chapter at UT and its associated advisory boards. After several months of negotiation, Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity reached a settlement agreement with the former student members and a small group of alumni that opted to support the closed chapter. That settlement includes: • Discontinued use of all SAE Trademarks. • Removal of the SAE letters from the front of the Chapter house. • Acknowledgement that Sigma Alpha Epsilon is closed at the University of Texas. • Assignment of the rights to the name “Texas Rho” to the newly formed Texas Rho Fraternity House Corporation. • Acknowledgement that the fraternity called Texas Rho Fraternity has no affiliation with or connection to SAE. (Since Texas Rho Fraternity is a newly formed separate and distinct fraternity, SAE’s position is that Texas Rho Fraternity has no historical connection to SAE as the Chapter at UT was closed before its formation.) Removal from the facility of all historical representation of SAE including anything bearing our name, letters, colors, or symbols (i.e., composites, trophies, etc.). •The settlement also requires: The permanent resignation of membership in SAE from all undergraduates who were members at the time of closure. The permanent resignation of membership of alumni advisors and house corporation board members. Given the unfortunate choices the former undergraduate members and former alumni made, should Sigma Alpha Epsilon ever pursue the colonization of a new chapter at the University of Texas at Austin, Sigma Alpha Epsilon has no interest in being in any way affiliated with “Texas Rho.” As such, men who have been recruited into Texas Rho Fraternity will not have the opportunity to ever seek membership into Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity from now and into the future. Dismissed to Dominant Malcom Brown captures second Super Bowl victory with Patriots after long journey from Brenham. By Ross Burkhart & Keshav Prathivadi

TLANTA — Before Malcom Brown’s successful run at Texas and subsequent leap to the NFL, his immaturity as a freshman at Brenham High School almost cost him his career before it even began. Brown, a defensive tackle on the football field, was a multi-sport athlete possessing unusual speed for his near 300-pound frame. But the football coaches at Brenham decided his lack of focus and commitment issues outweighed his varsity potential. Less than one year into his promising high school football career, Brown was dismissed from the team by his coaches. “Malcom came in as a freshman and was good enough to be on the varsity team athletically, but not maturity wise,” former Brenham head coach Glen West said. “We actually dismissed him as a freshman and just said, ‘Till you grow up, you can’t be a part of this.’” Timothy Cole, a former Texas linebacker and Brown’s teammate at Brenham, has known Brown since the age of 6. Through their close relationship, Cole knew Brown wouldn’t lose focus despite the setback. “When you’re on varsity as

a freshman, you’re not gonna be super mature,” Cole said. “I think it was just one of those things where he realized, ‘I guess I’m doing something that’s probably bigger than me. This is a big opportunity for me to get out of Brenham and make something of myself.’” But making something of himself required a season of waiting. After watching his former teammates reach the fourth round of the state playoffs in his absence, he went back to his coach, hoping to regain his spot on the team. While West and his staff weren’t initially convinced, Brown was granted a return to the team, in part because of a good word from an unexpected supporter. Margaret Agnew, Brown’s Spanish teacher, noticed his willingness to improve in the classroom during tutoring sessions and defended the budding football star to the coaches. “She (Agnew) came to us after she was working with him,” West said. “(She) said, ‘The kid has a lot of talent, is really, really smart and I think he’s someone that has a future.’” Brown recorded 43 tackles and 11 sacks in his sophomore season, but there was still one more thing he needed to figure out. Brown lived 27 miles away from Brenham, making things more challenging for him and

That’s when the Agnew family stepped in. “He lived with them for two years, and I would say that was definitely the biggest event that happened in his life,” West said. “It really changed the trajectory to where he is today.” Brown began staying with the Agnew family after football games since Margaret’s husband, Craig, served as the team’s defensive coordinator. Eventually, Brown decided to move in, making his overnight stays permanent. “That kept me focused, kept me out of trouble,” Brown said. “I was always in the house doing something. I was always around family, just the atmosphere and everything.” Nine years later, Brown played on a much bigger

stage than Brenham High. On Sunday night, he capped off his fourth NFL season with the New England Patriots by helping them achieve the ultimate goal in professional football: winning the Super Bowl. The 13-3 victory is one of many in a long line of championships for the Patriots and also Brown’s second career Super Bowl victory. The game was characterized by defensive dominance, with the opposing Los Angeles Rams offense held to just three points — something that’s only been achieved one other time in the Super Bowl’s 53-year history. “It feels great,” Brown said. “I’m on top of the world right now, we’re world champs and it’s just time to live it up right now.”

The fans inside Hilton Coliseum exploded with a roar when the three went in. Iowa State guard Lindell Wigginton stood up and turned toward a buzzing red and gold crowd, while a frustrated Dylan Osetkowski looked at his teammates for an explanation for what had happened. In a back-and-forth affair that featured runs by both teams all afternoon, it was

Wigginton who provided the game’s most significant shot. His three and free throw after an Osetkowski foul sparked an 11-0 Cyclone run with less than five minutes left. After claiming an eightpoint lead during that stretch, Iowa State never let up, defeating the Longhorns 65-60 on Saturday afternoon. “Whenever we get a lead, we want to keep it,” Iowa State guard Talen Horton-Tucker said. “When that little run came, we felt like we were always going to win.”

Iowa State’s scoring bonanza down the stretch came after the Longhorns claimed their first lead of the afternoon with seven minutes left in the game. Guard Matt Coleman III helped spur the comeback with five consecutive points that gifted the lead. But shortly after, the Longhorn defense fell apart. For the first 34 minutes of the ball game, Texas played at an exceptional level at that end of the floor and gave up only 45 points

to the Big 12’s most potent scoring offense. The Cyclones then started to hit tough shots against Texas’ 2-3 zone defense. And even when the Longhorns tried to switch to a man look, it proved futile. The Cyclones went on to score 20 points in the final five minutes of the game. “I thought we had enough energy to go do what we needed to down the stretch, but we just didn’t play enough defense,” head coach Shaka Smart said. “I think the way we defended for the first 34 or so minutes — that’s a recipe for winning on the road. But then to give up 20 in the last six minutes, that obviously isn’t going to get it done.” Despite the defensive woes, the Longhorns still had a chance in the game’s closing minutes. After back-to-back transition threes from guards Courtney Ramey and Kerwin Roach II, the lead was cut to five. A pair of free throws and a put-back layup from center Jaxson Hayes cut it to only one a couple of minutes later. Although Iowa State guard
