Students use summer classes as opportunity to get ahead, graduate on time By Denise Emerson @kaonashidenise
There are about three weeks between spring semester finals and the first summer session, leaving students little time to visit their families. Students often take UT summer courses to move their graduation date forward or stay on track. Psychology sophomore Kasey Escamilla, who is taking a language course this summer, said it’s hard to obtain necessary credits because her pre-med and liberal arts requirements don’t overlap. “It’s inevitable that I had to take something during the summer,” Escamilla said. “For some students, you just can’t avoid it.” Escamilla, a first-generation
student, said she had to explain her situation to her parents to help them understand why she needed to stay at UT for the summer. Since education is a priority in her family, Escamilla said they support the measures she takes to earn a degree. “It was sad to hear (my mom) say, ‘If you’re taking summer classes that means you graduate earlier, right?’” Escamilla said. “I was like, ‘No, it just means I can graduate on time.’” Taking summer classes is not cost-effective, since tuition rates decrease as hours taken rises and state aid decreases in the summer. Escamilla said splitting rent with her boyfriend helps her financially and gives her a companion while her friends are gone for the summer.
“Summer’s really fast paced,” Escamilla said. “If you don’t have a support group, it’s going to take a toll on your mental health.” Some students take summer courses because they are less competitive to get into compared to the fall and spring semesters. Anthropology and linguistics junior Emily Prewitt is taking an American Sign Language introductory course over the summer. Since it’s typically difficult to get into the class during the fall, Prewitt said her family pushed her to enroll in the summer. “(My mom) wants me to graduate early so badly,” Prewitt said. “(She) was like, ‘If you don’t take a summer class, I’m going to be disappointed in you. You might as well do something productive.’”

Prewitt works over 30 hours per week and visits her family about once a month, but she said she’d like to see her best friend and boyfriend in Denton, Texas, more often. “I wish I could have more plans, but since I’m working that already stifles what I would want to (do),” Prewitt said. “I’m jealous of people who don’t have jobs and don’t have to take summer classes.” Miller Camp, international relations and global studies and Italian sophomore, is working at the Scottish Rite Dormitory while taking two summer courses to help finish her core requirements. “My advertising research course is really intense,” Camp said. “We have a test (the second) week already. If I’m not

giving you a tour of the dorm or answering the phone, I can work on my schoolwork.” Camp hopes to take fewer hours her senior year and said she will take more summer courses. Escamilla also said she

will take more summer courses to graduate in four years. “(Summer courses are) one of the sacrifices that comes with pursuing higher education,” Escamilla said. “I feel like UT pressures us to graduate on time.”

Texas Cowboys accept hazing suspension but it may end early, UT says By Lisa Nhan @lmnhan24
he Texas Cowboys accepted their suspension from campus on Friday following a University investigation that found evidence of hazing after student Nicky Cumberland sustained fatal injuries leaving an off-campus retreat, but the University may allow the Cowboys to serve a shortened sentence. The president of the University will meet with the Cowboys in January and August of every year, beginning in 2022, to evaluate if the organization may be reinstated before its six-year suspension is completed. According to a letter obtained by The Daily Texan through an open records request, James Davis, vice president of legal affairs for UT, wrote to a Cowboys student that the University’s commitment to ending hazing is why it is “willing to continue working with you and the Texas Cowboys alumni on identifying ways to disrupt hazing in our campus community.” The student was unnamed for privacy reasons.
“The president will consider the Texas Cowboy alumni efforts to help the University eliminate hazing, the proposed future benefits to the University’s efforts to eliminate hazing arising from a newly constituted Texas Cowboys student organization, and the merits of proposed reforms,” Davis said in the letter. The Cowboys, a spirit group famous for firing Smokey the Cannon at football games, gave the cannon responsibilities to the Silver Spurs Alumni Association until they return to campus, University spokesperson J.B. Bird said. When the Cowboys were last suspended, the Silver Spurs, known for taking care of Bevo, also took over Smokey, according to Texas Monthly. In the fall of 2018, a University investigation found evidence of physical brutality, animal cruelty, forced ingestion of unwanted substances and coerced consumption of alcohol. The family of Nicky Cumberland requested the investigation after their son suffered fatal injuries in a car crash on the way back from the annual initiation retreat in September 2018. The driver fell asleep at the wheel, and the hazing investigation found a lack of evidence to support claims that sleep deprivation was used as a hazing tactic. The Cumberlands learned from members who attended the retreat about the hazing that occurred, such as paddling and one member being coerced into biting the head off a live hamster. This is the second time the Cowboys have been suspended from campus for hazing. In 1995, the death of then-pledge Gabe Higgins led to a fiveyear suspension. Higgins was found dead in the
Colorado River near Bastrop after he was hazed at the annual initiation retreat. Higgin’s blood alcohol content was more than twice the legal limit for driving. When the Cowboys returned in 2000, they made a pledge to ban hazing. This final sanction decision comes after three separate extensions, as they were originally given until April 16 to accept, appeal or request a formal hearing. During this extension period, the Cowboys tried to create a conference resolution in partnership with the University. A conference resolution is where “the accused registered student or sponsored student organization … may respond to the charges,” according to the Section 6-503 of UT’s codes of conduct. However, Davis denied their request in the letter. Eddie Lopez, president of the Texas Cowboys Alumni Association, said they accept this final decision but “more than anything else, we wish we could rewind the clock.” “As an organization we are collectively aggrieved at the incidents this investigation uncovered,” Lopez said in a statement. “It has caused significant self-reflection among the current student members, as well as alumni of our organization from across the decades.” Lopez said the Cowboys will use their time off campus to “work tirelessly on the hard work of reform.” “We do so with Nicky’s memory at the forefront of our efforts,” Lopez wrote in a statement. “Our goal is to rebuild our organization for the future and help shape a more respectful, civil and safe campus for all Longhorns.”

If you’re Twitter famous (or aspiring to be), join our social media department and use memes to connect with and grow our audience. For Longhorns who can’t turn off a good podcast, join our audio department, where you can learn to make one yourself. In our video department, you can turn news into sleek and engaging videos. If you want to take the photos that make up

our paper and website, apply for the photo department. For student artists and generally witty Longhorns, we have our comics department, whose illustrations make our paper come alive. If digital art is more your style, opinion illustrators combine traditional art with digital style to create illustrations for each week’s opinion page. Our design department lays out each page in the Texan and constantly pushes the boundaries of how print news can — and should — be presented. Are you detail oriented with a knack for editing? You’ll find yourself at home in our copy department, where our copy editors check every story in the Texan for factual and grammatical errors. To apply for any and all of these positions, simply fill out our issue staff interest form online and select the departments you’re interested in joining. The editors of each department will reach out to you with information about their specific tryout process. As UT’s student newspaper, we cannot do our job unless we reflect the community we report on. So many of us have found our home at UT here at the Texan. You can too. Buckner is a Plan II and journalism major from Austin. He is the editor-in-chief.

TRACK & FIELD
Senior stars leave after championships By Donnavan Smoot @Dsmoot3D
The beginning of the women’s portion of the NCAA track and field championships got off to a less-than-ordinary start. A thunderstorm rolled through Austin in the hours leading up to the start time, forcing delays in several events. The rain cleared out soon after. The humidity, compounded with the preexisting Texas heat, set the stage for races to begin. Teahna Daniels, who swept her preliminary events, competed in all three Longhorn events on Saturday. “Even though I might not be coming in as the favorite right now, I’m gunning for
the win,” Daniels said prior to the 100-meter event. “It’s anybody’s race.” Her signature race, the 100-meter, was first on the docket. Daniels stormed out

of the block, pounding her feet on the asphalt of lane five trying to keep pace with the leader. It was one of her better races; Daniels finished
0.01 seconds off her personal best. However, even her best wouldn’t have been enough. LSU freshman Sha’Carri Richardson brought Mike A. Myers Stadium to its feet as she finished the race in 10.75 seconds, a collegiate record. Daniels wasn’t the only senior with championship aspirations Saturday. Counting on every event on the schedule, Ashtin Zamzow came out on top with a National Championship in the heptathlon. “I was in a daze for the first lap,” Zamzow said. “Then the pain set and the two days set in and I was like, ‘Just finish.’ I kept fighting. I finally got my big throw, passed her and held her off with the (800-meter).” For both seniors, one a

champion, this weekend was a swan song. Despite their careers ending in their home stadium, it didn’t hit them in the moment. “It still really hasn’t set in that I’m done with college yet,” Daniels said. “I finished my best season yet at Texas, so I’m excited.” With two of the team’s stars moving on, the stage is set for the next wave of Longhorns to fill their shoes.
