tip that is the best tip for your freshman year, it would be this one. There are hundreds and hundreds of clubs out there at UT and even if a club isn’t your style there are tons of other organizations. There will be one for you. Try one out, or try them all out. Leave your dorm room and explore campus, you might stumble upon something you never thought you would see. Just get out there and do something.
2 . DON’T SKIP CLASS – This is probably on every single guide to surviv-
6 . BE PREPARED – Preparedness is more than just bringing a pencil to class. There is quite an array of things you should have in your backpack. Things like: an umbrella, gum, a flash drive, hand sanitizer, and pain relievers are just a few to note. You can also prepare by looking at the handy dandy weather app on your phone each morning before you leave your house, it will let you know if it is going to rain all day so you can pack your backpack accordingly. Being prepared is one of the biggest steps you can take in life from going to a high schooler to a college adult.
7.
STUDY SPOTS – You have probably heard about the PCL. It is the big library on campus. Yes, it is that kind of ugly, brutalist building near Jester. A lot of people study there, but did you know there are over 10 libraries on campus? All free for UT students to study in?! If you didn’t, just Google the UT Library System branches and they will pop up. Try the Life Sciences Library, the Architecture Planning Library and maybe even the Law School Library. Finding a study spot can be trying, but you can do it. Once you do, you will have somewhere quiet and peaceful to go to make sure you get the grade you want.
3.
8 . INVEST IN A GOOD PLANNER – Maybe you used a planner in high
REACH OUT – You probably will not know someone in every single class you take at UT. The school is just too big for that, but during the first week of classes it is ideal to make a buddy (and get their phone number). This way if you ever have to miss class or if you didn’t understand something you can text them. This is also important if you are super shy around professors (which you shouldn’t be, but it’s understandable). Your new buddy can probably help you out in the understanding of the material. You’ll have a go to study buddy.
school, maybe you didn’t. But now is the time to go out and grab one. Don’t get the cheapest one you see because this planner needs to be able to make it through at least your first semester at UT. You are going to be managing 4-5 classes plus your clubs and organizations. Then there are labs, study sessions, dinners with friends, etc. Get a planner and you will never forget important dates.
4.
9 . FOOD – Here is the breakdown:
5 . DON’T SWEAT THE SMALL STUFF – Come October and Novem-
ber you are going to hear about this big event…Registration. Maybe you have already heard about how terrible it is from your peers. But here is the big thing to know: it is not a big deal. You will be fine. Do not let something like registration, not getting into a club you really wanted, or getting a bad grade on a test get you down. Do not sweat the small stuff. Always remember that whatever’s happening probably will not still be affecting you five years in the future. Don’t sweat it; you will be fine.

ing college you have ever read, but it is so true. Missing one class can be fine, but continually skipping class is a huge mistake. Not only are you missing out on the lecture material and important information for your tests, you are missing out on making connections with your peers and your professors. If you go to class it can lead to a letter of recommendation or a job opportunity in the future. As a side note, do your readings as well. It will benefit you in the long run. You don’t want to be pulling an all-nighter before the test just so you can read the book.
CRYING AND BEING HOMESICK ARE OKAY. – We have all be there, and do not let anyone tell you they haven’t. We are all moving away from home, whether that be from down the road or from five states over. And it. is. hard. You can be sad, you can cry, and you can miss your parents (or dog, or bed). It’s important to not let yourself feel like those emotions are invalid. They are most definitely valid and okay to have. Most likely all of your friends are going through the same things too. So reach out if you’re feeling sad and lonely. Someone will be there for you.

A new world of possibilities. I was just a freshman student at the University of Texas just constantly worrying about the load of debt that my future would bring. It was the day after moving into Littlefield and parting ways with my parents and little brother for what would seem like months before I would embrace them in my arms again. If I had to be honest, I was terrified. What had I gotten myself into? Oh, how I longed for sweet, sweet Netflix and trips to HEB with my family! There was only one thing that I knew would make me feel better, and it usually never failed: Grub! If you are anything like me, I wanted something cheap, quick, and in walking distance from my dorm. And while I knew I had my meal card to indulge on for the next few months, I realized I would eventually get tired of Kinsolving dining. I decided to treat myself to something I knew would hit home. My personal favorite----tacos! Austin, Texas is known for its spectacular Tex-Mex options, so I hit up one of the popular spots near campus: Taco Joint, located on San Jacinto Blvd., which took less than 10 minutes to arrive to on foot. Upon walking in, I noticed the layout of the building was quite small, but I waited only a short amount of time to place my order as the cooks cranked the tortillas out on the griddle. The menu itself had many options, including seafood, breakfast and vegetarian tacos. The prices were so reasonable, unlike higher-end places like Torchy’s Tacos. In fact, I ended
up walking away from the register with some unexpected extra cash in my pocket. I chose the Street Taco and Fried Fish Taco and ended up waiting around 20 minutes for my order. But let me tell you, I was more than happy to wait. Now, since I had been raised in Mexico and bitten into homemade tortillas that I witnessed my very own grandmother roll up, press and grill before my very eyes, I was pleasantly surprised to see the authenticity of the place, especially since they had Mexican coke as one of the beverage choices. That is something that never fails to quench my thirst and complement my meals! I noticed across the room there was a condiment station with habanero sauce, and I love when my tacos have a nice kick to them, so I loaded up! But let it be known that you never want to pour the sauce until after the first bite because the spiciness was like a kick to the throat. You have been warned.

Upon the first bite of the Street Taco, I tasted the perfect combination of avocado and crispiness. The name held true. It was like I never left my grandfather’s ranch years ago. The Fried Fish Taco was also super satisfying: there was a nice zest and refreshing taste that made me want to bite down for more. Overall, everything was cooked thoroughly well, I saved a few bucks to order some leftovers for my roommate and myself and the tortillas hit it out of the park. The experience, all-in-all, made me feel at home and reassured me that I was in the place I was meant to be. Crazy how something as simple as tacos can feed my lonely soul. Not bad, Austin!
