Strong Rutgers Faculty = Student Success “Classes like Human Information Behavior encourage us to think deeper about user experience and the whys and hows of information behavior,” Ruben said. “The class gave me a framework to think about how to develop services for different groups of users.”

W

hat does it take to become a librarian at one of the nation’s top libraries? Ask Ruben Balderas, children’s librarian at the San Francisco Public Library. He graduated from Rutgers with a Master of Library and Information Science (MLIS) degree in 2011, and he credits the program

for much of his success. What does he love about Rutgers? He thanks the MLIS program for making him a “lean, mean reference machine,” through classes like Principals of Searching, Reference Sources and Services, and Cataloging and Classification.

Rutgers offers an MLIS degree for the new information-focused world, with a flexible curriculum designed for you. Whether you are a working professional opting to enroll in the online program, or a full-time student who wants to be on campus, you will work with the same world-renowned professors who will give you equal attention, knowledge and expertise. Offering specializations in Knowl-

edge Management, School Library Media, Digital Libraries, Rutgers will lead you to success. What else would you expect from a university that is ranked #6 (overall MLIS) and #2 (school library media) by U.S. News and World Report?

P

amela Pruitt has worked for top American corporations in communications, marketing, advertising and promotions. She’s even had her own television program. So when she searched for the best school to pursue a graduate degree, Pamela looked for the quality programming, and chose Rutgers’ Masters in Communication and Information

Studies (MCIS). Pam said, “I can’t tell you of a better group of professionals who got me through this. I look at the learning in organizational communication, broadcast journalism – everything is really, really special here. It did change my life, and I’m sure it would change someone else’s as well.”

cation and Health Communication. It prepares its students for careers in a broad range of professions, such as management, communication campaigns, communication research and corporate communication. MCIS faculty emphasize original research, cutting edge theory, and provide its students with the knowledge and skills needed to succeed in today’s information age.

Pamela is director of multicultural affairs at Rider University in Lawrenceville, N.J., and a doctoral student at the University of Pennsylvania. But Pam says it all began at Rutgers. The Rutgers MCIS program offers three specializations: Digital Media, Strategic Organizational Communi-

Professional Master’s in Science and Engineering When walking on the Rice campus, it’s hard to imagine you are only three miles from bustling downtown Houston, the nation’s fourth largest city. The tall hedges, green lawns, abundant trees and architecturally distinct buildings form a serene, self-contained environment. Just outside the hedges, Rice is surrounded by some of the most beautiful neighborhoods in the city and the Rice Village, a popular area of shops and restaurants. Within walking distance of campus are the city’s vibrant museum district, the Texas Medical Center and Hermann Park. Houston’s light-rail line can transport you to downtown attractions and major sporting events in a flash. Staying true to the vision set by its first president Dr. Lovett in 1912, Rice aims to “assign no upper limit to the university’s educational endeavor.” Rice is distinctive because of our ambition in the pursuit of knowledge, our commitment to teaching and the high quality of student life . Engineering and Natural Sciences have been a part of Rice’s curriculum since the university first opened. The Brown School of Engineering is comprised of nine academic departments and includes seventeen research institutes and centers. The Wiess School of Natural Sciences houses seven departments and is home of many interdisciplinary institutes at Rice, including the Rice Quantum Institute, the Institute for Biosciences & Bioengineering, the Richard E. Smalley Institute for Nanoscale Science and Technology, and

the Rice Space Institute. Leveraging our institutes, Rice researchers have proven they can remain on the cutting edge of science without sacrificing the university’s commitment to education and vision for modest growth. With a small studentto-faculty ratio, students in both undergraduate and graduate programs have easy access to their professors. Rice is providing strong support for its professional master’s students, both in Engineering and in Natural Sciences with enhanced services for all their professional master’s students. Offering these students a positive experience as they work toward their degree is an important component to the program’s continued success. The focus and attention given to these students not only enhances the quality of the programs and the value they deliver to them, but will also result in satisfied graduate students who will appreciate the education they receive from Rice University, keeping them involved with the university once employed in the industry/business of their choice. Engineering Professional Master’s Program (EPMP) The Engineering Professional Master’s Program offers non-thesis master’s degrees designed for those who seek to round out their engineering education with advanced analytical and technical expertise. It gives you a chance to add depth to your areas of interest and to round out your training, and it prepares you for a leadership role in

engineering management. Employers value the knowledge and maturity it takes to complete the degree, which further signals your interest in the field. The Master’s Programs are available in the following disciplines: • Bioengineering • Chemical Engineering • Civil and Environmental Engineering • Sustainable Engineering and Design • Computational and Applied Mathematics, Data Sciences • Computer Science, Electrical Engineering • Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science • Master of Statistics • Computer Science and Engineering The professional engineering master’s programs consist of 2 to 3 semester of engineering coursework with electives in management, business and communication. Professional development seminars are offered throughout the year for all professional master’s students to add skills to their tool kit which will prepare them better for entry into industry and business. For additional information visit www. epmp.rice.edu Professional Science Master’s Program (PSM) Unlike traditional master’s degrees, these degrees combine an interdisciplinary curriculum consisting of advanced science coursework with business, management and communication training, and hands-on experience (in form of a required internship), enabling

graduates to acquire a new “tool-set” for success in a business environment. Rice offers five science master’s degrees in • Bioscience and Health Policy • Environmental Analysis and Decision Making • Nanoscale Physics • Space Studies • Subsurface Geoscience Each degree track requires a unique set of science courses that provide students with the core expertise needed by industrial and/or governmental organizations.

Students supplement these foundation courses by choosing electives in line with their areas of interest. The 21-month professional master’s program begins with two semesters of coursework at Rice followed by a three to six-month internship. In addition to technical courses, students will take management courses, science policy, entrepreneurship, and ethics. Many opportunities are provided allow students to network with representatives from industry. No thesis is required; however, students present

their internship project in both oral and written form in the Professional Master’s Seminar. Students will attend events organized by centers and institutes relevant to their degree. They are guided in courses by the efforts of the PSM Professional Communication faculty. For more detailed information, please visit www.profms.rice.edu Both the science and the engineering programs offer a Dual MBP/MS degree track in collaboration with the Jones School of Business at Rice University.

Health Sciences Programs in Southwest Austin Biology II) • General College Chemistry I and II (or sub. Organic Chemistry) • General College Physics I and II (or substitute Biomechanics for a semester of Physics) • Social sciences, such as Psychology, Sociology, or Anthropology

Austin is a thriving city filled with opportunities: from live music and outdoor fitness to graduate schools and top employers. With a degree in physical or occupational therapy from the University of St. Augustine for Health Sciences (USA), you can have the opportunity for a fulfilling career and help people with a range of health care needs take advantage of what Austin has to offer. Founded in 1979, USA is an accredited graduate school that offers courses online and on its three campuses in Texas, California, and Florida to fit your lifestyle and help you reach your career goals. USA has more than 5,000 graduates and more than 1,500 students from across the United States. Doctor of Physical Therapy Physical therapists play a crucial role in helping people of all ages lead healthy, active lives by helping them prevent or recover from injuries. They work in a variety of settings, including hospitals, clinics, sports and fitness facilities, nursing homes, and schools. And they are in demand. The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects a “much faster than average” job growth of 36% for physical therapists between 2012 and 2022.

To become a physical therapist, you need a Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) degree from an accredited program. USA in Austin offers two options: a full-time, entry-level DPT and a parttime, flexible DPT. Both programs offer low faculty-tostudent ratios and feature a blend of online and handson learning. The full-time program can be completed in seven trimesters (2.3 years) of primarily on-campus study plus internships. The part-time program— ideal for people who are working—can be completed in 12 trimesters (4 years), taking a lighter course load, completing most coursework online, and participating in weekend lab sessions on campus. Graduates of USA’s DPT programs have gone on to successful careers owning their own practices and working for hospitals, clinics, universities, and professional sports teams. To be admitted into the program, there are several prerequisite courses you need (visit our website for the most up-to-date information): • Anatomy and Physiology I and II • General College Biology I and II (or Zoology, or Microbiology for

Master of Occupational Therapy Occupational therapists develop therapeutic interventions to help children, adults, and the elderly who have injuries or disabilities participate in everyday activities. They work in hospitals, private practices, schools, nursing homes, and other settings. Occupational therapists have a positive job outlook, with the Bureau of Labor Statistics projecting job growth of 29% between 2012 and 2022. USA offers a full-time Master of Occupational Therapy (MOT) that can be completed in six trimesters (two years) with small class sizes and blend of online and hands-on courses, as well as fieldwork experiences. USA’s occupational therapy graduates are making a difference for patients in a variety of settings, including schools, hospitals, and clinics. To be admitted into the program, there are several prerequisite courses you need (be sure to see our website for the most up-to-date information): • Anatomy & Physiology I and II • General College Biology • General College Physics • Social sciences, such as Psychology, Abnormal Psychology, Sociology, Anthropology, and Human Growth and Development • General College Chemistry

and Medical Terminology (recommended) Dual Physical/Occupational Therapy Program Occupational and physical therapists often work closely together to improve outcomes for their patients. With USA’s dual degree program, you can put yourself on the path to practicing as both and understanding how they complement each other in less time than studying both separately. Master of Health Science in Athletic Training If you are a graduate of the Bachelor of Science in Athletic Training program at the University of Texas or another university, you may be eligible for admission to

USA’s new online Master of Health Science in Athletic Training program. Open to athletic trainers who are certified and/or licensed, the program offers specializations in Administration and Leadership in Athletic Training or in Psychosocial Patient Care. It also has courses in Concussion in Sport, Sport and the Female Athlete, and Emergency Athletic Training. Taking a full-time course load, you can complete the program in fewer than

two years. To give you the flexibility to work while you study, courses are online plus there is a five-day on-campus residency in emergency athletic training. Post-Professional Doctoral Programs USA offers opportunities for its graduates and other professionals in the health sciences to continue their education and advance in their careers. Those who want to teach or lead at the university level can enroll in USA’s online Doctor of Education (EdD) program. For practicing OTs, PTs, and athletic trainers who want to advance their clinical, research, and teaching skills, USA offers an online Doctor of Health Science.

Accreditation USA is accredited by the WASC Senior College and University Commission (WSCUC) and institutionally accredited by the Accrediting Commission of the Distance Education and Training Council (DETC). USA’s physical therapy programs are accredited by the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE), and its occupational therapy programs are accredited by the Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE).

Financial Aid Available At USA, you have a variety of options to help finance your education, including scholarships, need-based awards, student loans, no-interest payment plans, and veterans benefits. Our Financial Aid Office will work with you to determine the best path to achieving your goals.

Admissions We strive to enroll candidates who are most likely to succeed in our educational programs, and we evaluate each applicant on his or her merits. The application deadlines for our physical and occupational programs are as follows, but we recommend that you submit all application materials a month before the deadline: • January Class: June 15 • May Class: Oct. 1 • September Class: Dec. 15
