UT and Austin Seminary offer dual degree

r. Martin Luther King Jr. once said, “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, “What are you doing for others?” This sentiment drives both Kathy Lee and Sarah Chancellor-Watson, students enrolled in the dual degree program at Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary, a program designed for people who have a passion for both ministry and social work. “My experiences and my time at Austin Seminary has affirmed that our world is deeply in need of people who are willing and equipped to speak to the extraordinary and radical love of God,” said Kathy. “There is nothing else I’d rather do than to help individuals and communities be transformed by experi-

encing God’s love for them, for all of us.” Austin Seminary’s Dual Degree program provides students the opportunity to complete requirements for two degrees concurrently: The Master of Divinity (MDiv) from Austin Seminary and the Master of Science in Social Work (MSSW) through the University of Texas at Austin School of Social Work. Students enrolled in the program are offered a chance to reach beyond the edges of a single academic discipline to examine the prospects of an expansive vocation. Students who attend Austin Seminary, conveniently located adjacent to the University of Texas campus, enter a space where their beliefs are celebrated and minds are

As they grow in the inviting classrooms and communities of the Seminary and the University of Texas, they help shape the world around them, while being molded by their experiences.

Not just theoretical, the degrees also provide practical experience in the field. Both women worked with students at risk through Communities in Schools. In addition Kathy worked at the Travis County’s Office

of Children Services and as a pastoral intern at Central Presbyterian Church, and Sarah worked at First Presbyterian Church and was a chaplain intern for Seton Hospital. “The dual degree program gives me the lens to see individuals and communities more holistically,” says Kathy. “I am gaining the skills and knowledge to take into account the bio-psycho-social-spiritual components that drive, shape, and influence us, which allows me to be a more informed and intentional caregiver, pastor, and social worker.” Sarah adds, “This experience has been inspiring, grueling, over-whelming, and life-giving all at the same time. the things that have helped me to build a foundation for fulfilling my vocational calling and a set of tools to help meet the needs of this world. “Austin Seminary has taught me how to listen and to truly hear the voices in scripture, in church history and worship traditions, in theology, and in the world, and to attune myself to recognize the voices of power, the voices from the margins, and even the silent voices,” Sarah continues. “In this process I’ve also learned about my own authentic voice as a Christian and as a leader in the church.” What will you do for others? Exceptional Legal Education Also Named A “Best Value”

E

xperiential. Practice-oriented. Student-focused. While many law schools are only now adopting this model to address changes in the legal profession, it has been the foundation South Texas College of Law has provided to students for over 90 years.

Fourth lowest tuition for any private law school South Texas has worked hard to keep student debt down by keeping tuition affordable. Of the 118 private law schools in the U.S., South Texas tuition is the fourth lowest. Moreover, students have no additional fees

tacked on to tuition. Even student parking in the costly downtown Houston area is provided free to students. The law school’s philosophy of containing costs has benefitted students. South Texas provides affordable tuition to a diverse student population, focusing on delivering an exceptional legal education. The school has been named a “Best Value,” by The National Jurist, and one of the “Best Law Schools for Bar Exam Preparation,” as well as one of the “Most Diverse” in the nation. Students benefit from the unique Pathways to Practice program, which informs students about different career options within a variety of legal fields and what it’s like to practice in those fields. Pathways also helps

students plan an individualized curriculum designed to prepare them to successfully enter their chosen area of practice upon graduation. It guides students through the substantive law courses they need, and through experiential, hands-on legal skills courses, enabling students to enter their areas of practice and to be immediately productive for their employers and clients. The law school’s Skills Institutes and Programs support the curriculum, immersing students in emerging areas of legal practice. The newest of these is the Oil and Gas Law Institute. South Texas has partnered with oil and gas firms for decades, and this institute equips students to become strong contributors in the industry.

Winner of national championships The Advocacy Program has trained student teams earning national championships for over 30 years, a history unmatched by any other institution, winning a record 120 national championships. The Legal Research and Writing Program is a leader in the nation, apparent in the unprecedented number of “Best Brief” awards received from Scribes, the prestigious American Society of Legal Writers. No other law school has won more than one “Best Brief” award; South Texas has won five. In 2012, South Texas teams took the first, second, and third place in Scribes awards, marking the first

and only sweep by a single law school. Growing from five to 15 since 2009, the law school’s Clinics help students learn valuable legal skills while providing approximately 3,500 hours of pro bono legal representation to underserved Houston residents each year. For over 90 years, South Texas has focused on providing exceptional legal education, preparing graduates to serve their community and the profession with distinction. This mission is apparent in graduates’ high bar-passage rates, employment rates, and a curriculum that unites theory and practice, preparing new graduates to make an immediate contribution to the profession.

The Best Engineering Education in Texas

The University of Texas at Austin’s Center for Lifelong Engineering Education (CLEE) is a higher education industry leader that provides master’s degrees that are ranked the best in the state of Texas and within the top 10 best graduate degree programs in the nation. CLEE also provides professional development courses, certificate programs and custom on-site courses for professional engineers and organizations. CLEE offers three distinct master’s degree programs targeted towards busy technical professionals and engineers who aim to balance work and achieving a higher education degree at the same time. These programs are scheduled to meet one weekend per month where students move through courses with a cohort learning from nationally recognized faculty. “The Cockrell School of Engineering’s Center for Lifelong Engineering Education continues to inspire and advance the professional growth of engineers worldwide. Leading practitioners and internationallyrenowned faculty provide results-based learning that

is immediately applicable in the workplace,” said Dean Sharon Wood of the Cockrell School of Engineering.

MSE in Engineering Management The Master’s in Engineering Management program is designed to meet the growing demand for technical leaders with strong engineering, science and technical backgrounds, as well as an understanding in management and financial business aspects. Students learn core business fundamentals and acquire the tools needed to lead and manage organizational change. This degree differs from an MBA in that it is not a one size fits all program; it instead marries the best aspects of engineering and business with faculty from both the UT-Austin Cockrell School of Engineering and the McCombs School of Business. Courses focus on teaching valuable skills and strategies that leaders of engineering and technical companies need. This program is also offered online to provide even more flexibility for busy schedules. To learn more about this program, please visit www. utclee.org/ENM.

The Master’s in Software Engineering program provides software engineers with the most up-to-date knowledge and tools needed to deliver robust, advanced, on-time and in-budget software systems for their organization. The 30 credit-hour program curriculum is structured to give engineers the ability to better analyze and design software systems with immediately applicable practice methods and strategies. With this degree, students will be prepared to move into advanced software project management positions or engineering leadership roles and successfully control the direction of their next career move. Visit www.utclee.org/SWE to learn more.

MS in Mechanical Engineering The mechanical engineering graduate program at the Cockrell School of Engineering ranks within the top programs in the nation. This new 100% online, asynchronous, executive master’s degree allows you to earn a world-class education from anywhere in the world. The 30 credit-hour, nonthesis program can be completed within two years. Students will acquire the knowledge and skills to design and manufacture successful products, and design processes utilizing emerging technologies. Courses are presented as they relate to current industry trends, and the program incorporates a focus on intellectual property and how it relates to the mechanical engineering industry. Students who complete the program will be prepared to solve engi-

neering design and synthesis problems, develop models and control systems, and analyze heat transfer systems. To learn more, visit www. utclee.org/MSME.

Admissions • Bachelor of science in engineering, or related field; students with other degrees should inquire about special considerations • Conditional admission may be possible with less than a 3.0 GPA • A minimum of 12 - 18 months of industry experience depending on the program • International students must provide a TOEFL or IELTS score

Application Deadlines Decisions for completed applications are typically returned within several weeks. To be considered for the spring semester, completed applications must be received by the following dates: • Priority: September 1st • Final: December 1st To be considered for the fall semester, completed applications must be received by the following dates: • Priority: June 1st • Final: July 15th

Professional Development Courses Engineers and technical professionals who want to learn more about very niche topics are also able to choose from more than 40 professional development courses that CLEE has to offer with topics ranging from civil engineering, engineering business, petroleum engineering, environmental courses, as well as software and technology courses. Students who enroll in these short-courses, sometimes only a few hours

long, earn Continuing Education Units (CEUs) towards their professional education.

Certificate Programs CLEE also offers a range of certificate programs such as Engineering Leadership, Lean Six Sigma Black Belt, Railroad and Rail Transit and Software Project Management. These workshops are shorter and more manageable for engineers wanting to learn about these topics and to be certified by the university. Students can move through all courses required for the certificate program in a short period to receive their certificate, or they can sign up for individual modules that may be more tailored to their interests.

Custom On-site or Online Courses Custom on-site courses are also available for an organization’s employees to help meet specific training objectives. CLEE provides engineering leadership, infrastructure and technical courses that are customized to individual business needs. Industry and academic experts train employees with real-world examples and relevant information that leads to an increase in efficiency and effectiveness in companies.

“By using a simple technique that I learned in the Engineering Management’s Art and Science of Negotiation course and attacking the contract as a whole rather than piece by piece, I was able to save my company five percent of the contract value which is $5 million US dollars,” said Kamil Cirak the Project Manager at IntecSEA WorleyParsons Group Worldwide. “It’s amazing when you see small things making a big difference.”

“There were several classes that helped me better understand the concepts behind my day-to-day work, and I found myself having more in-depth technical discussions at work as a direct result of my education,” said Jason Perkey, Senior Systems Design Engineering at AMD. “The Master’s in Software Engineering degree helped me get a very well-paying new job with incredible potential for technical growth.”

University of Miami School of Law MIAMI, FLORIDA is uniquely situated as a hub in the international worlds of entertainment and art, and is one of the few cities in the U.S. with four – soon to be five – professional sports franchises. Entertainment, arts and sports fields hold many opportunities for attorneys across the country and in Miami, and the law school at the University of Miami has capitalized on this environment in its ability to offer a unique blend of courses and specialized degrees that prepare students for employment in these arenas. Miami Law offers one-ofa-kind joint and advanced degrees in the fields. Joint degrees include a J.D./M.M. in Music Business and Entertainment Industries – the first of its kind in the country as well as a J.D./M.A. – Master in Arts Presenting & Live Entertainment Management. In its new graduate offering, the Entertainment, Arts and Sports Law LL.M., entertainment law luminary and inaugural director Harold Flegelman, leads a group of industry megastars. These include Peter Carfagna, Chairman/ CEO of Magis, LLC, a sports marketing, management, and investment company; and Professor Stephen Urice, a preeminent legal authority in art and museum law and former active director of the Frederick Weisman Art Foundation and the director of the Rosenbach Museum and Library.

Pictured: Harold Flegelman, Director, Graduate Program in Entertainment, Arts and Sports Law, University of Miami School of Law.

Flegelman was chosen to lead this program as he has spent his career parlaying an early love of music into a thriving corporate practice in the entertainment industry at the top ranked Loeb & Loeb LLP, where he was a partner in the Corporate Department and Co-Chair of its L.A. Corporate Media and Entertainment Practice Group. “The degree has been designed to support students in finding and creating placements, and just as important, to hire them,” he said. The program is for U.S. and foreign-based law students and attorneys committed to counseling professionals and companies in the entertainment, arts and sports fields. In entertainment, arts and sports, there are an array of subject-specific and broader courses at the law school for both J.D. students and students in joint and graduate programs. Courses

offered have included: Collective Bargaining in Entertainment/Sports, Copyright/Trademark Law, Entertainment Law: TV and Motion Pictures, Negotiating and Drafting Sports Venue Agreements, Negotiating and Drafting for the Business of Entertainment, Museum Law, Representing the Pre-/ Professional Athlete, Gaming Law, Alternative Dispute Resolution, Internet Software & Intellectual Property and The Olympic Games and the Law. The School also has an active student organization in its Entertainment and Sports Law Society which hosts an annual Entertainment and Sports Law Conference. Started in 1997, the Conference has grown into a full-scale event where law students and professionals take part in a forum to discuss current legal issues in sports, entertainment, intellectual property, the arts, and the media. Miami Law students also compete in moot court competitions in the sports arbitration area such as the Annual National Baseball Arbitration Competition and the Mardi Gras Sports Law Invitational.
