4 CAMPUS ADVICE FIVE WAYS TO KNOW THAT YOU’VE FOUND THE RIGHT MAJOR

Many students come to college undecided about the major they want to pursue.

Many more will inevitably change their majors as they begin to try out different courses to see what interests them. These steps are all a part of the college process, and the changes will be worthwhile when you have finally found the perfect major.

There are many ways to “know” when you’ve found the right major, but the one that stands out the most is that you’re excited for class. Yes, even the one at 8 a.m.

Once you find the right major, you find yourself telling your friends about all of the things you have been learning in your classes. (Warning: They won’t seem to be as excited as you are about the information.)

You will also begin to make really great friends in your classes because everyone will likely have similar interests and passions as you. Friends enrolled in the same courses as you WILL make both class and studying for tests a lot more enjoyable.

Homework is never fun, but you will find yourself not dreading it as much as you normally would. After you start working on it, you find that it’s not too bad,

especially if it’s something that you’re interested in.

When your professors bring in guest speakers or talk about their own experiences in the field, you usually get a little nerdy with excitement. The options in your field will seem diverse, and you will

be excited at the opportunities available in your future.

College requires hard work and commitment, but if you can find the right major, it will make your experience a lot more manageable. Going to class will become fun, and at the end of the semester, you will be proud of the work you completed and created. You will find yourself thinking about how lucky you were for the friends and teachers you had in your class.

It may take time to find the right major, and you may have to move around once or maybe five times, but it will be well worth it in the end.

FINISHING YOUR SCHOOL YEAR ON A POSITIVE NOTE

Now that we’re in the Spring semester I know we’re all itching trying to bump up our sad GPA from the past semester. If your GPA isn’t looking too hot right now there is no need to worry! A little makeover can fix that.

Getting through a semester with good grades really isn’t as bad as we make it seem. There are a couple of things that you can consider doing in order to help yourself finish your school year on a good note. Burnt x will lead you to success!

1. STOP PROCASTINATING Procrastination is seriously the main reason why people fall behind and end up with poor grades. Not doing things in a timely manner and leaving them off till the last minute is only leading you to failure. When you get an assignment ahead of time at least work on it little by little that way it doesn’t feel like such a drag when the deadline starts creeping up on you.

2. MANAGE YOUR TIME Time management is KEY! Having your day planned out helps things run much smoother for you. If you have a hard time getting things done or you feel like there is not enough time in a day you should definitely invest in a planner. It keeps you organized and ready to go. Put your school schedule in, then your work schedule and jot down your assignments as well. After you have that down go back and organize your day. Make time to do your homework, assignments, studying and any extra things you have going on. You will feel such a relief after getting yourself together.

3. PUSH FOR As I know its really difficult to get straight A’s, especially at UT. However, it is not impossible! A lot of students don’t take advantage of office hours with their professors or teaching assistants. Many professors actually enjoy office hours and getting visits from their students. It shows interest. If you’re not quite clear on a topic from class go talk to your professor about it. If you’re not too

happy with a grade you got go talk to your TA. They are there to help you. Though a grade change may not always happen, you may get lucky with some extra points. All it takes is to try and show that you’re putting in effort to get the best grade you can. So shoot for an A and make it happen!

4. TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF Don’t get too lost in the cluster of work or stress. Allow yourself to have “me” time. Make sure you’re staying healthy, eating right, getting enough sleep and exercising.

Working out stimulates your brain and has been proven to help improve academic results. Get your blood flowing and feed your body the nutrients it needs. Lack of self-care has too many negative aspects. You don’t have enough energy, you start feeling moody, your judgment is clouded, you don’t feel motivated. It’s all just so negative.

Take care of yourself. Be nice to yourself. Love yourself.

It will make the bad things not seem so bad. Let yourself breathe and keep the good vibes going.

Most of us may have moved beyond our antiquated belief in fixed intelligence, but in our not-too-distant cultural wake, we see an era obsessed with categorizing people based on intellectual capacity.

Some might argue that we haven’t moved beyond this obsession — a fair point — but it is clear that our cultural beliefs about the ability to improve intelligence have changed. This transition to a more nuanced perspective on intelligence was a slow, yet momentous one, owning its success largely to discoveries made in the

fields of neuroscience and psychology. But our zealotry toward the improvement of intellectual capacities has come with its own pernicious consequences.

Even if we aren’t familiar with the intricacies of the process itself, we’ve likely been exposed to the concept of “neuroplasticity.” It’s become a buzzword in recent years, and rightfully so. The idea that our brains can reshape themselves — by reorganizing, adapting and growing new connections well into our adult lives, is a motivating thought. If nothing else, it gives some added empirical weight to the merit of long hours of work as students.

The idea that our brains can reshape themselves — by reorganizing, adapting and growing new connections well into our adult lives, is a motivating thought.

This discovery, that our brains can actually change and improve in response to experience, has had a profound impact on the field of psychology. Dr. Carol Dweck, a Stanford psychologist and author of “Mindset,” wrote about effects of having a fixed mindset versus a growth mindset. To summarize the terms, a “fixed mindset” assumes that our character, intelligence and creative ability are static, whereas a “growth mindset” sees challenge and failure not as evidence of a lack of intelligence, but as opportunities for growth and for improving our existing abilities. Dweck’s promotion of this “growth mindset,” in tandem with our current understanding of neurobiology, lends further weight to the notion that intelligence is something we develop, rather than something we are merely born with.

When we take in this kind of information, about our ability to grow and improve, it would seem a logical next step to ride our new perspective into a better, more intelligent form of ourselves. But as many have found out, knowing that you can improve doesn’t guarantee that you’ll end up where you intended to be.

“Every time I’d start up a new routine, I’d go strong for the first week or so. I’d feel like a machine.” Walker said. “But eventually I’d lose sight of why I was pushing forward with such zeal. It would feel like I was being productive merely for its own sake, and I would start to realize how much I had blocked out of my life.

And then I’d lose interest and find myself right back where I started.”

The issue isn’t with the growth mindset itself, but rather the pitfalls that open when growth is placed as the highest value. Humans are complex and multifaceted. And when we close our focus to improving only narrow aspects of ourselves — with our packed calendars, tasks lists and productivity obsessions — we run the risk of neglecting other parts of ourselves, parts that nourish our motivation to improve in the first place.

This February, Austin was ranked the best city to live in by U.S. News & World Report, but Mayor Steve Adler said the city faces hiked-up housing and affordability from its growth.

“It’s an honor to be named number one,

the best city to live,” Adler said. “But it’s not the best city to live in for everybody.”

Miriam Weiner, a product manager at U.S. News, helped research and rank the 100 cities on the list. Austin received a 7.8 out of 10 overall and a 7.3 out of 10 value index, which is calculated by comparing the median household income with the median cost of living.

U.S. News found that the blended median annual household income, which combines and averages the annual incomes of homeowners and renters, is $67,013. The blended cost of living for homeowners and renters, which includes utility and housing costs, is $18,125.

“Although housing costs are higher in Austin than in other metro areas around the country, including other Texan metro areas (such as) Dallas and Houston, people in Austin tend to earn more,” Weiner said. “There are higher-paying jobs, especially in the technology sector, the engineering sector, just like that.”

Architecture assistant professor Jake Wegmann, who teaches on affordable housing and real estate, said Austin faces an affordability problem because so many want to live in its central hub of activity.

“If you’re in Austin, and you want access to the center and all that it offers … then you’re going to live centrally,” Wegmann said. “I think that has really jacked up the cost of housing in central Austin.”

Adler said he prioritizes creating more affordable housing because people move farther out seeking less expensive homes and, in doing so, congest traffic by taking cars to work downtown.

“We’re forcing more people out onto our roads, traveling greater and greater distances,” Adler said.

Radio-television-film junior Monica Broccolo, like many others in the city, takes a 50-minute commute from

Brentwood because living closer downtown is unmanageable.

“When I was looking for a place to live, I wanted to live close to campus, and I’m just like, ‘I can’t pay $800 a month to share a room,’” Broccolo said. “I think that students especially get taken advantage of.”

Wegmann said Austin lacks both housing and the subsidies to fund housing for middle and low-income people. Wegmann said density bonuses could help resolve this issue by giving developers more space to build in return for more affordable housing units.

“Basically use these density bonuses and give them something that they want that they can’t do now under existing zoning,” Wegmann said. “And in return, kind of claw some of that benefit back in affordable housing.”

Wegmann said students in West Campus now benefit from more housing after the area was rezoned for student housing, an example of how rezoning land can create more building opportunities. Wegmann said Austin’s CodeNEXT, the city’s new land development code, can pave the way for more affordable housing by using the proper space and resources.

“If done right, the code could make it easier to build more housing in more places serving people for less money,” Wegmann said. “If we don’t stand up to political pressure, then we’re going to end up with the same situation we have now.”

MCCOMBS’ BACHELOR OF BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION PROGRAM

CELEBRATES 100 YEARS OF LEGACY

This May, the McCombs School of Business will present its 100th year of bachelor’s degrees in business administration to the class of 2017.

The school was founded in 1912 with no more than 30 students and planted its roots in innovation, leadership and lifelong learning, according to the school’s website.

A century later, the McCombs School of Business is home to more than 80,000

alumni and includes international satellite locations. Today, the McCombs program focuses on undergraduate research and promotes diversity, consistently landing in the top 10 national programs, according to the school’s website.

Undergraduate students stay current with some of the cutting-edge work in business academia that can then translate into deeper insights and a more nuanced understanding of how the business world works. The program’s focus on research dates back to the 1970s, when IC Squared, a think tank devoted to research, was created at the University.

McCombs assistant professor Ram Ranganathan, who has won awards for research, said research is a crucial component of growing students’ critical thinking abilities that continues to benefit them in the professional business world.

“When students participate in research, they get a richer exposure to the burning questions in the field, the theories and their limitations and the whole process of knowledge creation,” Ranganathan said. “This can have a tremendous effect on their critical thinking and problemsolving abilities beyond what is possible in a traditional classroom setting.”

Aside from research, the school has highlighted diversity to prepare students for a global business society. The first woman graduated with a bachelor’s degree in business administration in 1920 and the first African-American in 1963. Today, the school has a diversity council and sponsors diversity initiatives with corporations such as American Airlines and AT&T to network with and mentor students.

Government junior Tehreem Shahab, an officer of Students for Equity and Diversity, said exposure to diversity is necessary to train students to understand and respect individuals with differing opinions.

“Diversity training brings in different mindsets and allows students to see issues from a different standpoint,” Shahab said. “Working in a global market means exposing yourself to different cultures and languages and being prepared to collaborate with people who have unique perspectives.”

The degree has a long history, and students said they carry its legacy on with enthusiasm.

“Going into the business school means going into a place where you know your peers will be able to help you,” finance freshman Kitahn Navissi said. “The older students at McCombs astound me. All they’ve been able to accomplish … (is) inspiring. I hope to be as successful as they are before I graduate in 2020.”

Finding the motivation to do assigned readings or homework is hard when dealing with those post vacation blues.

Avoiding the first few weeks of assignments is a one way street to a doomed destiny of late-night cram sessions.

Cramming right before lecture or quizzes is not only putting you at a disadvantage during the quiz, but also sentencing you to long term panic while trying to play catch-up for a exam.

The best way to avoid all these stressful scenarios is building motivation early on. Here are five ways to get that motivation going when you are already slacking.

TO GET MOTIVATED WHEN YOU’RE SLACKING

1. CREATE A MOTIVATION PLAYLIST Having the right tone of music for what you’re working on could help you focus a lot more than being in the quiet. If you are hitting the gym, fill your playlist with music that keeps you moving. If you are hitting the books, make sure not to pick anything that will be too distracting. I suggest acoustic instrumentals of your favorite songs.

2. DON’T WORK IN BED!!

Say this with me. Bed is for sleeping. Not for working.

3. PROMISE YOURSELF A REWARD IF YOU GET WORK DONE Whether it be getting dinner from a good restaurant on your way home from the library, buying that thing on your Amazon wishlist, or an episode of your favorite series on Netflix, promise yourself a reward to celebrate getting work done. In times of great struggle, a glimmer of hope can go a long way.

4. WATCH A MOVIE OR VIDEO THAT MOTIVATES YOU Sometimes we have to admit defeat for a hour or so to find the inspiration to work hard. Decide to take a break for a hour or two and step away from your work to think about something else. I like to watch TedTalks videos or my favorite movies to get past the unmotivated slump I’m in. Whether it be a movie about going to school or about the focus of your dream career, give yourself a chance to remember why all this hard work will be worth it.

5. FIGURE OUT THE HOUR YOU STUDY BEST You may not be motivated or focused enough to study because you are trying at the wrong time. Some people study best in the morning and others at night. Make the effort to try studying at different times in different places to find your perfect study mojo. It may be hard to believe, but waking up earlier or staying up later might

iSCHOOL ALUMS SHARE JOB SEARCH EXPERIENCE

Alumni from the School of Information shared insight on the interview process in their respective career fields last month, where they emphasized understanding trends in the industry and finding jobs that match their personal strengths as keys to success.

Elizabeth Hallmark, iSchool director of career development, said the booming information industry is one of the most exciting and dynamic fields to be in.

The best way to prepare for the evolving industry is to keep an open mind, Hallmark said at the alumni panel hosted by the Association for Information

Science and Technology, an organization providing students with resources for career development.

“Information touches every single industry, and there will be jobs that exist five years from now that don’t exist today.”

Hallmark said. “It’s never been more important for people who have skills to be out there in the world, understand how to connect people with information, get value from it and comprehend it to make the world a better place.”

The iSchool boasts a 70 percent employment rate within three months of graduation for its students, according to its website. It offers a variety of programs in areas including user experience design,

data science and library archives.

Hallmark said young information professionals should do their research about companies they’re interested in to be well-prepared for the job search, such as by checking Glassdoor to see what kind of interview questions they ask.

Student organizations such as ASIS&T prepare students for the industry through alumni panels and visits by company representatives. The visiting professionals network with the students and discuss skills, such as how be a successful interviewee.

“ASIS&T invites people from various industries to look at students’ portfolios

and teach them tools such as prototyping,” said Arwa Ravat, an iSchool graduate student and ASIS&T representative.

“Last semester, we held a session showing students the ‘do’s and don’ts’ of creating an online portfolio.”

Information studies graduate student Katelyn Helberg said she feels the interdisciplinary program has opened up her options for future careers.

“I entered iSchool interested in librarianship because it offers an ALA accredited degree,” Helberg said. “But the school has definitely broadened my horizons into user experience and data science. They provide an extensive career network and resources.”

One of the most common fears is glossophobia, better known as the fear of public speaking. To help students struggling with speech anxiety, the University launched a pilot program last year.

The Sanger Learning Center and School of Undergraduate Studies partnered with UT Libraries to start the University’s first public speaking center, which opened at the last year on the first floor of the Perry-

Casteñada Library. Within the last few years, the PCL has expanded its learning commons in STEM, research, writing and now public speaking. Last year the center was in a pilot phase to determine how much demand there is for its services.

Michelle Jewell, director of the Sanger Learning Center, said the center has focused on math and sciences but saw there was a need for support in public speaking as well. Jewell said she saw some students who could improve their professional communication skills.

Students can sign up for free one-hour sessions to get one-on-one speech feedback for individual or group presentations. Haggadone said while some people are naturally good speakers, the preparation and organization that’s involved in speech writing is just as important as the performance of the speech.

Sharmin Sharif, business graduate student and speech consultant, said as a fellow peer, she hopes students don’t feel as nervous about their speeches.

“With peer coaching, students will probably feel more comfortable because it’s not a professor or a teaching assistant, so it’s less intimidating,” Sharif said.

Communication studies graduate student Brad Haggadone has taught several sections of a professional communication class. Haggadone said about 1,500 students from all disciplines take the class each semester.

“I think public speaking is just really scary for a lot of students, and that’s the single biggest obstacle,” Haggadone said.

“I think public speaking is interesting because half of it is the performance aspect of it,” Haggadone said. “It’s pretty similar to athletics. You have to physically perform. But the other half of it — the preparation phase — can really make or break a speech. You have to organize it well and know your audience.”

Ash Sonawane, speech consultant in the center, said students can make the best use of the center by getting feedback beginning with the preparation stage.

Jewell said she encourages students to practice as much as possible and to use the center that’s available to them on campus.

“Don’t let the classroom be the first place you give a presentation — let us be your first audience,” Jewell said.

OFFERS ADVICE TO YOUNG ENTREPRENEURS

Eric Schmidt, the 19th-richest person in the tech industry, has one big piece of advice for students: to pursue what they believe in and to do it passionately.

Last month, the former CEO of Google visited UT to offer advice to young entrepreneurs based on his personal experience in the business world.

“If you are not intellectually curious, you will fail,” Schmidt said. “Everyone that I have seen fail in this business were not intellectually curious enough to question

everybody else’s ideas as well as their own.”

As the executive chairman of Google’s parent company, Alphabet Inc., from 2011 to 2015, Schmidt was in charge of external matters relating to all of the holding company’s businesses, including Google, as well as consulting their CEOs on business and policy issues. He has spoken about self-driving cars, virtual reality, fake meat, 3-D-printed buildings, machine learning in education and any other technology he thinks will change the world in the next five to 10 years.

“From birth, we are told what to believe by our parents, friends and society,” Schmidt said. “The ability to listen to what other people are telling you to think and still choose what to think for yourself is the greatest challenge faced by anyone.”

Economics sophomore Christopher Head said one of the most interesting topics Schmidt brought up was the invention and use of machine learning, where computers are able to learn without being programmed.

During the talk, Schmidt put a lot of emphasis on learning and earning a college degree. He said the leaders today are going to be pushing harder for people who want to learn and build on current technological innovations.

“The fact that this machine has the ability to determine what you like and dislike and then create stuff based on it makes it extremely clear that our privacy isn’t as safe as we think,” Head said.

Congratulations to the Class of 2017! By now we have paid our dues over the past four (more or less) years as college students and are entitled to enjoy the comfort of routine. We graze through syllabus week with grace, purchase our textbooks late and admire the sight of underclassmen who haven’t yet caught their balance.

But unlike our predecessors of the past eight years, we’re scheduled to enter a job

market guided by the Trump administration.

So what does that mean? According to Trump’s proposed economic policy, he plans to create 25 million jobs over the next decade by pushing businesses to return the jobs they’ve outsourced to foreign countries back to American soil.

In other words, it’s the rise of the bluecollar worker.

the sentiments of the traditional, working class American and has been delivering on his promise so far. We can expect a revitalization of manufacturing jobs and can already see part of that happening with Amazon announcing a plan to create 100,000 new jobs, Walmart adding 10,000 and GM promising to invest $1 billion in American factories.

While there are many reasons, economic or political, as to why people would want to return manufacturing jobs back into the U.S., the main one is nostalgia.

In a speech given in a Pennsylvania recycling facility last year, Trump inadvertently summed up this desire by stating, “America became the world’s dominant economy by becoming the world’s dominant producer.”

However, that doesn’t mean that Americans have stopped producing. We’ve just transitioned in how our labor is expedited from physical to cognitive work — hence the white collar worker.

For prospective graduates, we’re entering a job market where the technology, administrative and office jobs we’ve been preparing for aren’t our government’s priority. While this can be interpreted as healthy competition for job growth between the blue and white collar workers, I feel unsure of where I stand.

So what does this mean for the Class of 2017? As of now, not much. The unemployment rate is currently at 4.7 percent, the lowest we’ve seen in the past eight years. Rather, my concern lies in how the increase of manufacturing jobs will impact our current social structure. Since I was little, I’ve been told that a college degree is the key to a better life. What my degree has really given me is a set of marketable skills that elevates my value as a worker.

Taking this into consideration, I can begin to understand why I feel uneasy about Trump’s job plan, and there is no indication of expanding these blue collar workers’ skill sets.

America’s greatest strength doesn’t lie in the quantity of jobs or products produced.

Our greatest strength comes from our quality. As Americans, our greatest accomplishment is our creativity and how our workers are more than assembly-line workers. It is true that at some point in American history, a factory job could provide a stable income, which is especially appealing to those without a college degree. But the jobs we bring shouldn’t just be monotonous work for the sake of being monotonous. We, as workers, with or without a degree, should be able to have skills that contribute beyond our workplace and help us grow economically and socially.

PLAN II ALUMNI SHARE CAREER EXPERIENCES WITH CURRENT STUDENTS

This Februay’s Plan II Career Week featured a panel of alumni who shared their success stories with current students to help them pinpoint their postgraduate professions.

“We have been doing this event for 10 years,” said Melissa Ossia, Plan II academ-

ic advising coordinator. “The alumni panel is special, because we always get a very diverse and unconventional set of career experiences. We have professionals from medical and legal fields, nongovernmental organizations, writers, researches, etc.”

Sexuality Center, reflected at the panel on what the program taught her.

“I appreciate the critical thinking and the analytical skills that Plan II gave me,” Hogan said. “We live in interdisciplinary ways, and that’s what Plan II is all about.”

Unlike traditional majors, Plan II is an interdisciplinary curriculum that encompasses diverse fields of arts and science.

Hogan also specified how Plan II courses shaped her personal and professional views.

“I learned how to see the world from a social justice framework,” Hogan said. “It helped me reflect on my own privileges and exposed me to marginalized gender identities.”

Ossian said networking with alumni can have tremendous benefits for current Plan II students.

“These alumni understand that Plan II students are problem solvers,” Ossian said.

“They know from personal experience that we teach a particular set of skills that appeal to employers.”

Ossian said the Plan II office keeps track

of all of their alumni with the intention to ask them to come back and speak to students.

“We select alumni based on age,” Ossian said. “We want a diverse range of how long it has been since they graduated from the program.”

Cecilia Handy, Plan II and psychology sophomore, said she appreciated Plan II more hearing from the panel of alumni.

“I don’t have a career in mind yet,” Handy said. “But listening to the people who shared my experience is comforting, hopefully I’ll discover a career path like them after I graduate.”

Handy was especially inspired by Hogan’s academic experience in a Plan II course.

“Hogan took Professor Carol MacKay’s class on women’s autobiographical writing when she was at UT,” Handy said. “I also want to take that course, so maybe our careers will share some similarities.”

CRACKING THE DRESS CODE

BUSINESS FORMAL This is the most professional of the three codes, and it is unlikely that you’ll be wearing this type of outfit for an interview.

However, if you are required to dress in business formal for an event, it is important that you truly dress to impress.

Ladies: A full matching skirt or pants suit in a dark color, with dark pantyhose and closed-toe shoes, is preferred. A collared shirt should be worn underneath. Makeup and jewelry are important, but keep them minimal and not distracting. Hair should be neat, as always.

Men: This calls for a full dark-colored suit, with a coordinating button-down and tie.

Tie clips, cuff links, or pocket squares are all nice additions. Shoes should be dark and clean, and hair should be well kempt.

BUSINESS PROFESSIONAL More formal companies, such as finance or accounting organizations might require this type of dress every day. Business Professional is also the “safe bet” for many interview situations, as you look puttogether and responsible, without being too buttoned up.

Ladies: An outfit similar to business formal is appropriate. However, you can be more liberal with the colors you choose, and pantyhose are not necessarily required.

Men: Similarly to the ladies, men can wear an outfit much like the business formal one. The colors of the suit could be lighter, like a gray or navy, and tie clips, cuff links, or pocket squares are not required.

BUSINESS CASUAL This is the most common every day dress requirement for modern-day offices. This type of dress could be appropriate for an interview, although it’s always better to overdress than underdress when trying to impress.

Ladies: Suits are not required. A nice blouse or collared shirt with dress pants or an appropriate-length skirt is acceptable.

Sweaters, dresses, and light blazers are also appropriate.

Men: Ties and full-suits are not required.

UT STARTUP HELPS STUDENTS HANG OUT WITHOUT STRANGLING THE TREES

Worried that the increasing popularity of hammocks will kill the trees supporting them, a group of UT students created their own hammock structure with reclaimed steel from oil pipes.

Olivia Nguyen, a 2016 aerospace engineering graduate, co-founded a startup called Nido — the Spanish word for nest — along with three other UT students in June. The startup sells hammock structures made of locally sourced recycled steel to public institutions.

“Our current product holds eight ham-

mocks and 16 people,” Nguyen said. “We work with a local hammock company. We rent out and also sell structures mostly to festivals, universities and state parks.”

UT is one of Nido’s customers. By the next spring semester, there will be one hammock structure by Nido set up on campus as part of the Speedway Mall Project.

When the weather is nice, the Nido team sets up their hammock stand in front of the Chemical and Petroleum Engineering Building for students to hang out using their hammocks.

“This is the first interdisciplinary major in Moody,” Brummet said. “It is part of a growing trend across UT. Students will be able to put together a rich and diverse plan of study from a variety of departments and disciplines. This will be the plan for degrees in the future.”

Communication and leadership freshman Rey Castillo wants to pursue a profession in the music industry but hopes to gain leadership experience through the major.

UT STARTUP HELPS STUDENTS FIND WORK EXPERIENCE

Condecca, a new UT student startup, matches undergraduates seeking work experience or internship opportunities with potential employers in a similar way to how dating apps match up potential couples.

The startup is up and running on condecca.com, and it is seeking to release its mobile app onto Apple and Android markets in 2017. Condecca could benefit both students and startups; college undergradu-

ates looking to find job experience would be matched with local Austin companies looking for ambitious recruits. Students are reviewed on their quality of work, and they can use these reviews to find more prestigious jobs in the future, Condecca co-founder Hakan Telsiz said.

“What makes [Condecca] different is the employment process efficiency [and] the fact that students are willing to work for less money in exchange for experience,” Telsiz said. “We’re facilitating the process and communication of hiring.”

sophomore who helped develop Condecca’s business model, said that Condecca’s user interface was designed to be easily accessible by students.

“We’re really giving [students] these short-term internships and short-term projects geared towards college students to bridge the gap,” Dao said. “It’s kind of a niche market within the job-creating agencies, but it’s something that we ourselves have experienced, and a lot of other students have experienced it as well.”

The website and mobile apps have gone through several versions to strike a balance between undergraduate user experience and professional feel, said Evan Kaminsky, a computer science sophomore who co-founded Condecca and developed the iOS mobile app. To use the app, Kaminsky said students will swipe to the left when searching for job opportunities in the same way they would look for matches on Tinder. If the student finds a job they would like to apply for, they press a button that automatically submits their resume.

“For most of the employers we see using it, it’s really just that you’ve got your resume, you see the job, and if you’re a good fit, you just go for it,” Kaminsky said. “The website has the exact same functionality.”

Employers are found through various networks around Austin, the most prominent being the McCombs alumni network, according to Meredith Hughes, a business honors sophomore and fellow Condecca contributor.

“There are a lot of BHP [Business Honors Programs] and McCombs alumni that have started their own companies here in the Austin area,” Hughes said. “It’s honestly a really great resource.”

In addition to searching for startup employers willing to hire, Condecca also tries to attract undergraduates looking for jobs.

The app and website entice undergraduate students by displaying other users’ experiences with employers.

“I think the best way to attract students is to be able to show them, ‘Hey, here’s 50 kids who have actually had internships, and have had great experiences,’” Hughes said.

While students tend to worry primarily about grades when engaged in the college experience, a common deficiency is an ample resume to supplement that student’s credibility, which makes the search for a job harder, according to Sean Geiger.

“You’ve got lots of students with lots of academic experience, but not much professional experience,” said Geiger, a computer science sophomore who is also a co-founder and the chief technology officer of Condecca. “We’re thinking that Condecca will provide a way to hopefully close that experience gap.”

According to Hughes, Condecca’s goal is to help driven students find companies that are willing to provide valid opportunities.

“It’s gonna be purely targeted at meaningful work experience you can put on your resume and speak to,” Hughes said. “At the end of the day, that’s all that matters.”

JOB INTERVIEWS

Everybody goes through it. Sometimes it can be extremely tough, other times it can be a breeze, but we have all been there. We have all been interviewed.

Being interviewed for a job or internship can be incredibly scary. You can want something so bad and be nervous, or it can be a last ditch effort to find something.

Either way it is hard to be really good at interviews. But we have compiled a list of our favorite tips to help you get through this interviewing season.

1: PREPARATION Do not go into an interview without doing any research on the company. Even if you are interviewing to be a cashier at a store for a summer job, you should know the mission statement or have a general idea of what the company does. If you are interviewing for an internship or a salarybased job, do some serious digging into the company. You should know what the company does on a day-to-day basis, you should follow their social media accounts, and, if it is a job where they publish things, you should have a favorite article.

2: THE HANDSHAKE Has anyone ever told you to have a really firm grip or to out-grip the person you are interviewing? This is wrong. You should never try to intimidate someone who is interviewing you, so match the grip of the interviewer. If they have a really weak grip, make your grip weak. If they try to break your hand, try to break their hand. Just follow along, this is their show and you are playing a part in it.

3: THE OUTFIT No matter where you are interviewing, whether it be Vineyard Vines at the Domain or Frost Bank, dress up slightly better than the level with which they wear clothes. So if Vineyard Vines does casual jeans and tops, wear a dress and a blazer. If

Frost Bank is business casual, go full suit.

This shows that you are willing to make an effort in your job and that you cared enough to get dressed up. Plus it makes it all the better when they tell you that you won’t be required to dress as formally.

4: HOW TO ANSWER THE NEGATIVE QUESTION They will always ask you something negative, like “tell me about a bad boss you’ve had.” The best way to answer those questions is to not really answer them. For the bad boss question, lie. Say that you haven’t had any bad bosses and you hope you never do. Because if you talk about a bad boss experience it can reflect badly on you, especially if the person you are interviewing does the things your bad boss did. If they ask you something else, just avoid the question, say something like, “I don’t have experience with that, but I do have experience with [something positive].”

TIP: Do some serious digging into the company.

You should know what the company does on a day-today basis, and you should follow their social media accounts.

5: THANK YOU NOTES After you have interviewed for a job send a thank you note. If the company is millennial-based you can send an email to the person who interviewed you. If it is a more old school company take the time to write a personal, handwritten thank you.

Get stationary for your notes that reflect who you are, if you are bright and happy get bright and happy notes. If you really love UT go buy the notes that have the longhorn logo on them. Just make sure what is inside is kind and you make the interviewer feel special.

NEW CNS INVENTORS PROGRAM FOSTERS SCIENTIFIC IDEAS THAT CAN IMPACT THE WORLD

It’s not rocket science: the College of Natural Sciences Inventors program demystifies the way scientific industry innovates and commercializes products.

This program is led by Tim Riedel, the research educator for the DIY diagnostics Freshman Research Initiative, stream, which is a lab that develops rapid diagnostic tools. The program, which is offered for credit for the first time this spring, teaches students how to transition from research to applications.

He added that this program is different from most other entrepreneurship programs at UT because the students don’t have to come prepared with an idea.

“We are going to spend most of our time developing … (and) poking holes at our own ideas,” Riedel said. “If you feel good about your idea, you are ready to do these hundreds of competitions and seminars that are happening all the time in Austin and Houston.”

The program started when some FRI alumni in Riedel’s stream decided to volunteer in the lab and continue to work on their diagnostic ideas. Eventually, the volunteer program grew into a seminar.

“CNS students, except for (computer science) students, felt like they were graduating with little knowledge of how business works and no network with any industry,” Riedel said.

Riedel said he wants to make the program a personal experience rather than a lecture-based class by allowing students to come up with a project and letting them run with it.

“The end goal is to have the student better prepared to understand how industry works, how products are taken to market and to be more strategically placed to get a job in industry, if that’s what the student desires,” Riedel said.

Many of the entrepreneurial programs at UT help students and faculty improve their idea and make it marketable. Riedel said there is a gap between coming up with an idea and developing it.

For its first few semesters, the CNS Inventors program will act as a launching pad for programs such as the Longhorn Startup, according to Riedel. In the long term, Riedel said he hopes to make the program a stand-alone, incubator-style system.

Students currently in the program have diverse reasons for why they joined. Trenton Beckendorff, computer science senior, said CNS inventors is a good way for him to merge his research experience with his business minor.

“I can take the information I have learned in my FRI stream and find a way to bring that technology to market to actually solve real problems,” Beckendorff said.

Carlton Rice, a biomedical engineering and biochemistry junior, said he sees CNS inventors as a way to bridge the

gaps in the healthcare sector.

“I see a huge disconnect between the researchers and the physicians and the healthcare industry. Being able to speak the language of the business side, physician side and research side is something lacking in society today”.

Although this program is currently restricted to FRI alumni, Riedel said he hopes to make it open to all of CNS by next year. He said the program will teach students, even those without a science background, skills such as precise communication, lab techniques and critical thinking.

“It’s not all Albert Einstein with the crazy hair and it’s not all Steve Jobs with the turtleneck and amazing pitches,” Riedel said. “If I am careful to nurture idea-generators and people who traditionally don’t self-identify as entrepreneurs, I think we will find great ideas that might otherwise get lost.”

GENDER BIAS IN RECOMMENDATION LETTERS

When UT students apply for jobs, graduate programs or professional schools, recommendation letters can play an integral role. What professors and students may not realize, however, is that these letters might be unconsciously biased by gender, according to a recent study from Columbia University.

The comprehensive study showed that women applying for geosciences fellowships are less likely to receive outstanding letters of recommendation in comparison to men, regardless of what region the letters came from or the recommender’s

gender.

Kuheli Dutt, lead author of the paper and assistant director for academic affairs & diversity at Columbia University’s Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory, said she wanted to explore why only 10 percent of geoscience professorships are held by women when they hold 40 percent of doctoral degrees.

The five-year study analyzed the tone and length of over 1,000 recommendation letters written for geosciences postdoctoral fellowships. The study had a large data set of letters from 54 countries and controlled for regional differences.

ing factors, such as gender or race, then classified into three categories: excellent, good and doubtful.

Letters classified as “excellent” clearly described the applicant as outstanding, using descriptions such as “trailblazer” or “brilliant scientist and role model,” whereas “good” letters consisted of weaker descriptors such as having a “thorough understanding of the subject.” “Doubtful” letters questioned the applicant’s scientific and leadership abilities.

According to Markman, the stereotypes associated with gender can also factor into unconscious bias. To combat this issue, decision-makers must acknowledge that a problem exists and be more upfront about criteria when choosing applicants, Markman said.

Results of the studies revealed that female applicants were only half as likely to receive “excellent” letters compared to male applicants, a consequence Dutt attributes to implicit, or unconscious, gender bias.

“Our study uncovers what appears to be a very real problem that is consistent with implicit bias,” Dutt said. “Given the way society views men, men are more likely to be described as ‘confident’ and ‘dynamic’ whereas women are more likely to be described as ‘mature’ and ‘caring.’”

According to Dutt, while these labels might be applied with good intentions, adjectives that tout leadership and innovation are more favorably viewed by businesses. Companies promote people to lead and spearhead projects, whereas people described as “mature” and “team-builders” are not selected as readily for these opportunities, Dutt said.

Arthur Markman, UT professor in the Department of Psychology, said that even though this study focused on geosciences fellowships, implicit bias contributes to the leaky pipeline of other STEM fields, the legal professions and industry jobs, to name a few.

Future steps include studying implicit bias for non-binary genders, as well as advancing studies focused on the intersectionality of minorities and gender,” Dutt said.

According to Yael Niv, associate professor at Princeton University’s Neuroscience Institute, compounding effects of race and gender can create obstacles for minority groups. For example, Asian women in science are expected to be demure, Niv said.

“So when an Asian woman speaks up at a [research] conference, people are like, ‘Wow, she’s so aggressive’ or ‘Wow, she’s so strong-willed and unrelenting,’ whereas a guy could say the same thing and people would just say, ‘Oh, what a thoughtful comment,’” Niv said.

According to Niv, getting these problems out in the open is crucial for change.

“It really isn’t about judging people, it’s about how to fix the situation,” she said.

“Implicit biases are unintentional, but we must intentionally fix them.”

MAYOR ADLER ADDRESSES AUSTIN’S SHARING ECONOMY

Austin Mayor Steve Adler discussed aspects of the city’s sharing economy and its relationship with local government as SXSW began.

“As we move forward in the 21st century, we’re going to have to find what is the intersection of sharing economies and government regulation,” Adler said. “It’s going to take companies and governments that can sit down and work together to find the best way to maximize the economies and the platforms that will still allow the government to be able to deal with

safety issues. We haven’t figured out that place right now.”

Adler spoke at an event hosted by The Texas Tribune and moderated by its CEO, Evan Smith. Smith said many who were opposed to the city’s ride-hailing regulations are concerned for Austin’s reputation as an innovation, tech and disruption capital taking a hit. Austin should be a city that embraces the “new world,” but the current ride-hailing situation does not reflect that value, Smith said.

“On ride-hailing and on short term rentals, Austin appears to be hostile to the sharing economy,” Smith said. “Austin … ought to embrace the sharing economy —

it’s entirely consistent with the zeitgeist of this city, and yet, at least to the outside eye on ride-hailing and on short term rentals, we appear to be hostile to the very thing that we ought to be about.”

Adler said Austin is not hostile to the sharing economy and the local government is going to do everything it can to appear welcoming.

“Austin needs to be the proving ground that can actually establish whether there’s a sustainable model of the sharing economy’s intersection with government,” Adler said.

Lorena Reyna, a TurnKey Vacation Rentals employee who attended the event, said

there are better solutions to the shortterm rental problems the city is facing.

“The problem is the enforcement of neighborhood ordinances,” Reyna said. “I believe the city should put resources into enforcing those laws as opposed to an outright ban, which as we know, whenever there’s a ban on a sharing economy thing, it goes underground.”

Reyna said it is unfair to demonize the entire vacation rentals space when there are just a few that could be shut down.

“I believe in the sharing economy and having common sense policies that bolster it and protect people and protect property but don’t limit innovation,” Reyna said.

One major component of a successful semester is learning to manage time early on, Sanger Learning Center director Michelle Jewell said. Before getting weighed down by your assignments, Jewell said it’s important to get organized.

“There’s not a single person who doesn’t struggle to make enough time,” Jewell said. “Read your syllabi, make a deadline calendar, arrange when your projects are due, reverse engineer how many hours you’ll have to put in to meet deadlines — no one should write a paper overnight.”

Sanger Learning Center offers workshops on everything from time management and study techniques to GRE prep classes.

This semester, Jewell said workshops on succeeding in online classes will be added to the mix. Workshops and tutoring begin Jan. 25.

“Talk to your professor about your first assignments if you don’t know what they mean [on the syllabus],” Jewell said. “The worst thing you can do in those early weeks is be shy about asking for help or refreshing yourself on the basics.”

UT career counselor Lynn Chang said it’s never too early in one’s college career to utilize the University’s career services.

Specialists can help answer questions about what careers fit each major and even help secure first jobs for those about to graduate.

“The most important thing to do is explore, explore, explore beyond your major,” Chang said. “If you’re interested in one thing, get really involved in that one thing. That means not just classes but maybe joining an organization or getting involved in the community. Think about how to use your time to highlight who you are.”

UT computer scientists are reprogramming the Austin economy.

This February the Austin Chamber of Commerce recognized Bruce Porter, chair of the UT Department of Computer Science, with the Economic Development Volunteer of the Year award. The chamber honored Porter for his work in growing the economy across the Austin region.

“Dr. Porter has been instrumental in continuing to build the high tech and innovation economy throughout Austin,” said Luke Sheffield, public relations manager for the Chamber, in an email.

Porter helps recruit technology companies to come to Austin. He said that during his eight years as chair of the computer science department, the tech sector of central Texas experienced a surge.

Sheffield said that Porter and his team were instrumental in meeting with prospective companies such as Conde Nast Digital Innovation Center, LiveOps and others who consider Austin as a home for their businesses.

“The (computer science) department as a whole produces a lot of local talent in students, who are trained with a really good education, and that’s what’s powering the

Porter said he believes the award is really recognizing the role of UT’s whole computer science department in boosting Austin’s technology economy.

Porter said that just as important as having a strong university, is having a vibrant entrepreneurial community and venture capital for launching new companies.

“We’re getting there, and I was delighted a few years ago when (former) President Barack Obama visited, because Austin is one of the few cities that has a chance to become a Silicon Valley,” Porter said.

Factory, where students from Longhorn Startup, an entrepreneur class led by Joshua Baer, pitched their company ideas to him.

One of the groups that pitched to Obama were the founders of Lynx Laboratories, who developed a camera that could generate 3-D models.

“Lynx Laboratories was so successful that (the students) have already sold their company for $300 million dollars,” Porter said.

“Later, they got it down to a software-only implementation, that would run on something like a cellphone.”

According to Porter, students like those who started up Lynx Laboratories are the biggest assets to expanding the local tech community.

Yue said that Austin is an appealing city for computer science majors.

“The cost of living is lower compared to California, and most of the major tech companies are starting to, or have already built offices in Austin, so there wouldn’t be a lack of choices,” she said.

According to Porter, it’s this cycle of mutual attraction between new companies and UT graduates that drives the growth in the local tech economy.

“Companies are looking for a talent pool, a place where they’ll be able to find and recruit computer science talents, and that includes finding a place where people in high demand will choose to live,” Porter said. “They’re also looking for places where that kind of talent is produced, and those people will choose perhaps to stay in that town. Austin wins on those kinds of dimensions—it’s a cool town, it’s where people want to live, and we’re producing a lot of these talents.”

GOVERNMENT SENIOR STARTS ACLU CHAPTER AT UT AUSTIN TO PROMOTE CIVIL RIGHTS

Growing up with her eyes glued to the television, soaking up the banter of newscasters on CNN, Nali Shah got her unofficial education in politics. Now a government senior, Shah has continued her lifelong commitment to justice by founding the UT student chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union.

Shah said after spending two years under the care of CPS, she grew to be fascinated with civil service structures. She said she founded the chapter because she wanted to be involved with the legal innerworkings of these civil rights issues.

“I wanted to do something that felt like I was making a real difference,” Shah said. “Of course, I was through research but I (also) just wanted to be involved with the plumbing of issues.”

The ACLU is a national, non-profit organization that provides legal support for civil rights violation cases.

Although ACLU of Texas provides volunteer opportunities to assist with lobbying at meetings, to monitor town council meetings and plan community education events, Shah said she created the UT chapter to promote the ACLU’s mission within the student community and to provide opportunities for student organizers to collaborate.

“The times that I’ve seen the biggest change and the most creative thinking is when we have people from all social, economic, racial and academic backgrounds,” Shah said.

“I think engineers have just as much to contribute to the conversation as political science junkies, and I think we’re doing ourselves a disservice by not including and not encouraging those voices.”

Before starting the chapter, Shah reached out to Victor Cornell, the ACLU of Texas Statewide Advocacy Manager who was on board to move forward with the chapter.

Cornell previously worked with a previous ACLU chapter at the UT Law School which is no longer active.

“It will be great to have a presence back on UT Austin campus and I look forward to working with them for many years to come,” Cornell said.

Advertising sophomore Garrett Mireles joined the chapter this year and is now a member of the communications team. He said once the chapter gets more traction at UT, UT Austin members will volunteer for ACLU of Texas to attend council meetings and observe protests.

“You are certainly able at this school to walk to the capitol and have a face-to-face conversation with your representative,” Mireles said.

Shah said she is confident the chapter will be kept busy.

Within the past month alone, the new administration at Washington has commenced changes to policies regarding civil rights.

Other planned events coming up for the chapter include “What’s Donald Trump Doing in Your Neighborhood: Immigration in Austin,” a workshop outlining the legal

Though the current political climate is unstable and leaves the future uncertain, Shah said she looks forward for the chapter to take on the challenges ahead.

“I think it is a time of great threat,” said Shah. “But I also think it’s a time of great opportunity.”

Students are constantly questioning which life path will lead to the most satisfaction.

In a survey that asked millennials what their most important life goals were, about 80 percent selected “get rich,” whereas only 30 percent selected “to help people who need help.”

UT researchers are investigating which life factors affected happiness the most.

Their findings challenge factors stereotypi-

cally linked to happiness, such as wealth and career.

There is, in fact, a positive association between money and happiness, but it is minute. Money is essential to happiness since it provides basic necessities.

However, after a threshold yearly salary of $75,000, there is virtually no increase in happiness as income increases, according to the Journal of Psychological and Cognitive Sciences.

study examining how factors such as income and social support predict current happiness and changes in happiness.

The quality of family relationships, more so than income, predicts happiness, according to the study. Also, during a 10-year span, an improvement in quality of relationships predicted an increase in happiness.

“A lot of people think, ‘When I get that promotion or get another position, then I’m going to be much happier,’ but our research has shown that the change in income over time related to no change in happiness,” North said.

She said people’s happiness is also contingent on their attitude toward the human spectrum of emotions.

“There’s a lot of emerging research that shows it’s not just a ratio of positive to negative emotions,” she said. “It’s not just about feeling more positive emotions.

There might actually be this element of accepting the full range of our experiences.”

Raj Raghunathan, marketing professor in the McCombs School of Business and creator of happysmarts.com, also offered insight into how developing relationships is important for happiness.

“It’s not a waste of time to go out at a bar or hang out with your friends,” Raghunathan said. “It’s very important to keep in touch and not just on Facebook where it’s superficial, but to develop deeper ties.”

Raghunathan questions why his academically successful peers often seem miserable in his upcoming book, “If You’re So Smart, Why Aren’t You Happy?”

He said these successful people typically have two traits: an interest in being superior and controlling others.

“These very traits that might make you smart — go-getting, achievementoriented, narcissistic, egotistic, with high self-esteem — and perhaps even help you achieve success, can often come in the way of your happiness,” Raghunathan said.

Raghunathan said while people should avoid these negative traits associated with traditional success, there are steps students can take to find happiness.

“Do something you really, really love to do.

That’ll naturally lead you to become really good at it rather than seeking to be better than other people,” he said. “Seek to be of service to other people, and rather than trying to control other people and the environment, you try and control yourself — your internal environment.”

It’s no secret that life has become increasingly competitive. Colleges accept fewer applicants and jobs are scarce. It’s a rat race to see who can add the most to their resumes.

There are times when I sit and wonder who I really am. Those times are usually at 3 a.m. while trying to complete a “who are you?” essay question. I find beauty in this question because of its fluidity. It can apply to a characteristic, achievement or occupation.

But what if we sat down and took a moment to wonder why we do the things we do?

I could say that I am a scholar, a Longhorn and a journalist. I’m fortunate say that I’m a happy person.

I urge you to ask yourself those same questions. If you’re not happy with the answers, pursue your passions. UT has more than 1,300 student organizations, over 70 sororities and fraternities, hundreds of intramural sports and club teams, and more. Join something you’re genuinely interested in and if you’re ever asked about it in an interview, that interest will show in your answer.

In this competitive atmosphere, it has become more important than ever to separate ego and competition from desire and passion. If you do something, be passionate about doing that activity. Simply participating or applying for something only because it adds to a resume can cause

ACCEPTING LOW SKILL-LEVEL JOBS NEGATIVELY AFFECTS FUTURE EMPLOYMENT

Individuals who accept a job below their skill level could potentially be penalized when applying for future employment, according to a recent study conducted by a professor in the College of Liberal Arts.

Assistant sociology professor David Pedulla is the sole author of the study, “Penalized or Protected? Gender and the Consequences of Nonstandard and Mismatched Employment Histories,” which focuses on employment situations that could be potentially penalizing when applying for jobs in the future.

Pedulla conducted his study by submitting nearly 2,500 fictitious applications for over 1,200 job openings in five cities across the U.S. The study found that for men and women working below their skill level, only 5 percent of applicants received a positive employer response. Having part-time employment on an application, on the other hand, only negatively affected men and had no negative effect on women. Temporary agency employment, Pedulla said, had little effect on either gender.

could vary based on the demographics of the person who is applying for a job.

“If an employer looks at my resume and saw that I was working a part-time job while I was in college, then I believe it would help my case to get a full-time offer,” Ali said. “[But] if I was laid off, in my 40s and had a part-time job as my most recent form of employment, then I believe it would hurt me.”

Ali also said the results could vary because of economic conditions and individuals experiences. “[This study] shows from an economic standpoint that employers are less willing to hire someone who isn’t working on their skills,” Ali said. “Thus, if someone is having to make ends meet, they will have a tougher time getting out of that situation even though they have a stronger skill set.”

Economics sophomore Anica Ali, who previously worked at Chick-fil-A, said she believes the results of the study are accurate but that work ethic is valued by employers above other factors.

“I think having a good work ethic and learning the value of money is relevant,” Ali said. “It’s competitive, and the chances of you getting the position without any previous experience [are] difficult.”

UT SCIENCE PROFESSOR STANDS UP FOR WOMEN IN STEM

According to molecular biosciences professor Shelley Payne, when we limit who enters STEM, we are a limiting the talent pool.

Payne recently published an op-ed about the STEM gap, or the discrepancy between men and women, as well as people of color, in STEM fields. Payne said that while both genders are curious about the world when they are young, this interest deteriorates in girls as they get older, due to societal and cultural pressures.

According to a 2016 report from the National Science Foundation, boys and girls perform equally well on standardized tests in elementary school. However, this is not the case for minorities from low income families, where boys perform better than girls starting at an early age. Larger gaps form in high school as boys are more likely to take AP classes such as calculus or physics, according to the report. Boys were also more likely to take engineering and computer science courses in high school.

Gina Higby, the outreach and STEM education senior program coordinator for UT’s Women in Engineering Pro-

gram, said that many of the issues arise in late elementary and early middle school curricula. She added that many STEM challenges and activities children face in school are competition-based, which creates a problem.

“When it’s a competition, someone loses, and since boys are typically given more opportunity, they are typically going to be the ones who win because they have experience,” Higby said. “With more instances of girls losing at science, they feel as if they’re not capable. Team-based challenges solve this problem.”

“The effects of bias and climate are cumulative and for some students, experiences in college classrooms may be the tipping point,” Payne said.

Chelsea Drake, a leadership collaborative program coordinator who oversees freshmen for the Women in Engineering Program, said that the key to keeping women engaged in engineering is to create community.

On Feb. 28, UT hosted its annual “Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day.” There were over 8,000 registered kindergarten through 8th grade participants. Both Higby and Payne said that the most important aspect of events such as Girl Day is creating female role models in STEM. “When I was growing up, physicians were male and nurses were female,” Payne said.

“None of my female friends considered becoming a doctor; if they were interested in medicine they went to nursing school or became a medical technician … (Girls) need role models, so they think of women in science as the norm, not the exception.”

The disparities between males and females in STEM begin to emerge in higher education. While women earn 57 percent of bachelor’s degrees at institutions of higher education, they earn only 43 percent of mathematics degrees, 20 percent of engineering degrees and 17 percent of computer science degrees, according to the report by the National Science Foundation.

“Making sure that when a first-year woman comes in and is in a huge class with a limited number of other women in engineering, that they can find those women (is the most important thing),” Drake said. “Having that support system will help them persist and stay in engineering.”

According to Payne, there is no easy solution; women and minorities will have to push their way past the historical and cultural ideas that they aren’t as capable.

However, she said society can’t spend decades waiting for it to happen.

“We need to do everything we can to eliminate barriers to the full participation of women and underrepresented minorities in STEM education and STEM careers,” Payne said. “Encourage them, nurture their curiosity, recognize that they are smart and capable and treat them with the same respect afforded males who express an interest in science.”

STUDENTS SHOULD LEARN TO MANAGE THEIR FINANCES

Let’s accept it: UT provides us a protective bubble. But as soon as we graduate, we are on our own. Students will have to find a job and an apartment, buy a car, pay back their loans, fill out their income tax forms, start investing and plan our retirement. The school will not watch out for us when we get arrested — or need help filing out our income tax returns.

At UT, we learn math, science, literature, writing and even about Texas laws as part of our core curriculum. But no class teaches us how to do our own taxes, how to start paying off our loans or how to plan our retirement. For this knowledge that everybody should have, one must get accepted at the McCombs School of Business. Even then, as Zach Schultz, a supply chain management senior, described, only the finance and accounting majors get that education.

“Most of the finance that we are learning is more related to corporations,” Schultz said. “It’s not personal literacy that we are learning. (That’s) maybe covered in one class period.”

Knowledge of personal money management should not be restricted to only a few students. UT should offer a class that prepares students for real world monetary management after graduation. Otherwise, students who don’t have this knowledge can find themselves struggling with paying off their loans, handling their credit card or getting swamped by other mundane tasks.

These skills are expected to be learned through trial and error, but that could cost graduates a lot of sleep when they have to pay $10,000 to a huge $80,000 in loans.

Due to this lack of knowledge, students naturally look into other, potentially untrustworthy sources. Many students might put their trust in banks, but that could be an unsafe move as banks’ main purpose is to make profit off of their customers even when it’s unethical, such as Wells Fargo’s actions last year when the bank opened bank accounts to meet sales demands without the permission of the customer.

Even money management online courses aren’t very helpful since there is no interaction between students and a teacher — which is very important in money issues because they are related to changing laws and rules. In general, online courses have a higher dropout rate than classroom courses. This is why UT needs to offer a class focusing on personal finance and student loans — and maybe even make it mandatory.

There is a reason people go to college: to prepare for the rest of their lives. UT is a leading institution in preparing students for a professional career, it should also be a leader in preparing them for life.
