Former Databytes EIC tops BLEPT Noralyn Fernandez Sacoco of Bacarra, Ilocos Norte topped the Board Licensure Examination for Professional Teachers (BLEPT), elementary level given last August 17, 2014 as announced by the Professional Regulation Commission(PRC) and the Board for Professional Teachers(BPT) with the rating of 89.40 %. She is the daughter of Ferdinand Sacoco, a farmer and Tessie Sacoco, a plain housewife. Out of 70, 786 examinees nationwide, only 25, 301 elementary teachers (35.74%) successfully passed the said licensure examination. Although DCCP education graduates had always maintained a higher

institutional passing rate over the national passing rate in previous years, this S.Y 2014, Sacoco made her school proud by emblazoning her institution’s appellation in the academic map of Teacher Education. Hence, the Latin proverb, “SIC ITUR AD ASTRA” (Thus, we go to the stars.) is a fitting metaphor for her singular achievement in particular and the DCCP in general. She was the Editor-inChief of The Databytes and former President of the Dynamic Future Teachers Association. Although she missed Latin honors (Cum Laude) due to a technicality, she nonetheless was the recipient of the following awards: Dynamic Future Teacher of the Year, Journalist

Being the topnotcher, various commendations were awarded to her such as the Medal of Excellence given by Mayor Chevylle Fariñas of Laoag City, Resolution of Commendations from the Municipality of Bacarra and the province. There is no more eloquent product that DCCP Marketing committee would ever exhibit when they go out to sell the institution in the respective areas of responsibility, taken to present before them, a pulsating enigma, Noralyn Sacoco, the primordial student. - Janmark Labasan

Hon. Joseph Sicco along with Atty. Leni Robredo and other guests in their regal attire pose with the newly-crowned Mrs. Hawaii Philippines, Mayrose Borromeo. Last February 03, 2015, Data Center College hosted the Presscon between the officers of Kalayaan International Philippines headed by Mr. Ben Pulido, President and Dr. Vicente Bonoan, VPAA representing the College who had a friendly talk. The said event was joined by the education students who interviewed the personalities of the Kalayaan regarding the objectives of the said organization and the rationale of their coming to their homeland. The Hawaiian group promised to give two laptops to the school and at the same time to give a substantial amount to finance scholarship program to the poor but deserving students of DCCP. The Kalayaan Night was also held last Feb. 05 2015 at the City Auditorium. Atty. Leni G. Robredo, the congresswoman of the 3rd District of Camarines Sur graced the said event as the Guest of Honor and Speaker. Hon. Joseph D. Sicco, President of DCCP introduced her. It was

also a night for the coronation of Mrs. Hawaii Philippines, Mrs. Mayrose Ancheta Borromeo. She was teary-eyed as she recalled and tasted the salubrious atmosphere of her native Burgos town and the love and the affection of friends, relatives and associates for their presence after so many years of

absence. To give a fiesta atmosphere, a raffle draw under the leadership of the new Head of Students’ Affairs, Mr. Mark Danilo Dumlao was conducted and the prizes were given by the generous balikbayans. The affair was a success because it was a cooperative endeavor of four institutions: the DCCP, INNHS, DepEd and the Laoag City local government. The Kalayaan Night is observed every Pamulinawen Fiesta of Laoag City to strengthen the socio-cultural relations of Laoag City and Hawaii because Ilocano Migrants have been working as early as the 1920’s in the sugar cane plantation of Hawaii, in the vineyards of California and in the Salmon factories of Alaska. - Mark Jones Galera

In Pursuit of Excellence

The pursuit of excellence is like running a race without a finish line because the unending search for supremacy, perfection and eminence has always been man’s primal desire and fascination since immemorial times. The road to EXCELLENCE is narrow and difficult, but this is the only road we must traverse. For without excellence, without gaining a competitive edge- be it in sports, in E business, or in the academic community (where we D rightfully belong), or even in the daily ordinariness of I everyday life- striving beyond the limits of what we are, what we know becomes imperative if we hope as a T college, and country to compete successfully O vis-a-visasoura people Asian and world neighbors. R Our world has become a global community as I technology has conquered distance. The moon where A lovers have sworn their love eternal once has become L ordinary airport in 1969, with U.S astronauts landing on the lunar surface. The dry Negev desert has bloomed because of Israeli technology. Life spans have become longer because of wonder drugs. A massive growth of automated super markets and accelerated green and blue revolution have taken place. We have evolved from Homo erectus to homo olympianus, the quintessential man. In the continuing search for superiority we follow the Olympic dictum of Excellence: ALTIUS- higher, CITIUS-faster, FORTIUS-stronger. Our DCCP in its inchoate stage begun small in faculty, small enrolment, small budget and mediocre facilities. But like a new pregnant mother shivering and suffering from the inevitable pain and difficulty of normal childbirth, the DCCP baby has finally morphed into an adult fighting relentlessly for its academic place in the sun. She is able to stand at par with other institutions in the same solar system. DCCP administration continues to hire top teacher applicants who excel in their respective fields of endeavor. Earlier the DCCP has been looked up to as an institution offering high-quality computer education. Now, as flagship of all Data Center Colleges in Northern Luzon, it offers courses under TESDA and CHED supervision. The future remains bright and rosier as enrolment from its small beginnings has grown to 2,327 as of S.Y 2014-2015 2nd semester. The two CHED courses, Criminology and Education that offer Licensure exams for its graduates-has resolutely stamped the name of DCCP in the academic map as our institutional passing is much higher than the national passing rate. One time DCCP obtained 99% rating for criminology students in the 20122013 Licensure Exam for Criminology graduates. Now, we have produced the Topnotcher Rank 1 in the whole country for the BLEPT elementary level. For S.Y 2013-2014, the incandescent star in the firmament of education is from the Data Center College of the Philippines. May her tribe increase.

44 Fallen Heroes ALDRICH D. SUAREZ

January 25, 2015-doomed as a day of tragedy, the day where 44 lives where ruthlessly killed and taken away from their families. It all happened in Mamasapano, Maguindanao where 44 Special Action Force (SAF) were brutally massacred in a corn field by Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) terrorists and despite the anger of the whole nation, nothing has been done to bring justice to them. And so, yes! P-Noy gave orders to Justice Secretary Leila de Lima to study criminal charges against those responsible for the carnage. But the thing there is, how long will the Department of Justice (DOJ) conduct this study? A month…to six… a year? If you ask me, this is just a delaying tactic by the Malacañang who is hoping that by that time, the anger of the Filipino

people will already dissipate and rumors will dissapear so things can be back to normal again like nothing happened! Previously, P-Noy had “peace talk” to the MILF, therefore the state had an agreement with the said group. But, what did the MILF do? Even if they denied their participation in the massacre, pieces of evidence do not lie. Terrorist shall be considered always an enemy, a great leader

knows best, and the only solution is to implement “all out war”. The less treaty that the state would sign, the more law applies. If there is only consolation or prize to the bereaved families and the 44 soldiers themselves, they died with a great dignity and honor in selflessly giving up their blood to the country, thus making them the 44 Fallen Heroes of today!

OPINIONS The Teacher Education Course at the DCCP: Looking Back VICENTE A. BONOAN, Ph.D

The Data Center College of the Philippines began offering the teaching course in SY 2004-2005, both the Bachelor in Elementary Education and the Bachelor in Secondary Education. It was some kind of a bold move considering the fact that the Mariano Marcos State University, which is a Center of Excellence in Teacher Education is located in the same academic environment and it has been offering the teacher education courses since its inception as a college. Likewise, neighbor institutions like the Divine Word College of Laoag, Northwestern University and Northern Christian College have also been offering the same teacher education courses for quite a time. Why then did Data Center College of the Philippines still offer teacher education in its curricula despite this cutthroat competiton? The administration while it believes in conventional assumptions that the teacher education program has been overflowing its proverbial cup and that teaching does not really offer satisfaction financially vis-à-vis other professions, yet the teaching profession is still philosophically the noblest and with respect to values , teachers cannot avoid the role of being models, no matter how much some people disclaim it. Hence, with this ideal standard set in the mind by the administration , this was the basic rationale for the teacher education course at the Data Center College of the Philippines with the confidence that we can still produce teacher graduates who will hopefully have the passionate pursuit of learning and the capability to transmit authentic knowledge and sound values to our students to whom we seek to generate critical judgment, love of country and commitment to serve the lesser fortunate of our countrymen. Out of a total of 59 teacher education graduates so far, 34 passed the Board Licensure Examination for Teachers or a high passing mark of 68%. Our institutional passing had been much higher than that of the national passing and also higher than the other private schools in the province. At present, we have a total enrolment of 260 teacher education students from 1st year to 4th year. Long after formal education is over, our graduates must continue learning to keep abreast of a changing reality. Yes, our teacher graduates cannot afford to live unexamined lives; they are what they teach. The teaching profession needs people of quiet courage and convictions. It requires much heroism to persist in a calling that offers such scanty material rewards. But we take consolation from what the late President Ronald Raegan said of the teacher, “Teachers, you are the molders of children’s dreams, the GODS who build or crush their young beliefs of right and wrong . You are the sparks that set aflame the poet’s hand or the one that lights that flame of some great singer’s song. You are the guardian of a million dreams.” And so we shall continue to offer the teacher education course at Data Center College of the Philippines and hope to contribute our just share in producing teachers with a heart and soul attuned for service to God, society and humanity. Just for Laughing okay!

Laughter is the Best Medicine

There are fifteen muscles needed to share a smile and forty-five to make a frown. But only is it, that we meet everyday more people frowning than smiling. An author once advised “Laugh and the whole world laughs with you, weep and you weep alone.” Do you agree? Let us then share these few lines and smile as our world go by. 1. 2.

3. 4. 5. 6. 7.

What is the difference between tragedy and calamity? Mayor ERAP went into a nearby eatery and ordered pancake. The server asked if he would just divide the pancake into two pieces or into four parts. ERAP answered casually, just divide it into two pieces, or else I may not consume the cake if cut into four parts. What do you have that you use proudly which the Pope has, but doesn’t use? Mr. Go has it short, while the late Pres. Magsaysay had it long. What is the similarity of a woman’s half slip and a cloud? Why are some biblical scholars claiming that if only Adam and Eve were born Chinese, there would be no “original sin” to worry about? The name of Vice President JeJoMar Binay is a combination of Jesus, Joseph and Mary. He is destined to be remembered by future generations as “Hesusmariajosef ” and as the most corrupt, kasi BINAYaran siya ng malaki ng mga MAKATI contructors. (hehehe)

1. If P-Noy falls into the Pasig River while boating, that would be a tragedy. But if an aide rescues him, that would be a calamity. ERAP knows nothing about fraction. Family name Heaven is both above them. The snake would have been cooked Kung bukas ang pakpak, lilipad ang ibon. Kung bukas ang pekpek, papasok ang ibon. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6.

Fifty Shades of Grey To be banned or to be watched???

E.L. James’ erotic romance novel Fifty Shades of Grey became a worldwide phenomenon that drove teenagers and adults crazy upon its release in 2011. However, the question about the morality of the story came out especially when the book was optioned to be adapted into a film. Now, the film has been released and it has become an instant box office hit with over $300 million worldwide gross. However, the inclusion of provocative and sensual scenes in the movie caused stir and speculations whether the movie should be restricted from the general public or not. Some DCCP students, faculty and staff shared their opinions regarding this issue. Here are their answers:

Llarnie Mae Ventura 1st year HRM student

“It’s all about immorality not love making. Disturbing of innocence. Grand awakening.”

“Open-minded naman tayo. Kung ang issue ay sa mga bata, mayroon namang age restriction. May kanya-kanya naman tayong fetish. Bottomline: If you don’t want it, don’t watch it.”

Christian Nicole Garcia 1st year BSIT student

English instructor

3rd year BSIT student

“The content is inappropriate for many viewers. Dapat ay mature lang ang audience. When it comes to banning the movie, OA naman. There are worse movies than that one. Some I have seen.”

“Seriously, I haven’t watched that movie and I got no idea what it is all about. But since rumors have said that it’s about pure sex and the like then I am certainly not into it.”

Charmaine Camagon

Marcus Catbagan

Mariel Basilio BEED student

“The story has sense if one will analyze it deeply. Christian Grey has that kind of personality because of his experiences. His mother was a prostitute. The movie tells us that we must not judge the sadists because they also have their own stories and reasons for being such. It’s the trauma of childhood abuse.”

A Topnotcher’s Response During the 26th Oath Taking Ceremony of New Professional Teachers

If being a topnotcher Rank I, in the Board Licensure Examination for Professional Teachers in the Elementary level nationwide is but a dream, then I refuse to wake up. But ladies and gentlemen, this scenario is no longer a dream. It is a veritable truth. The good Lord has filled my cup with overflowing joy and blessings. Probably it will take me a lifetime to thank HIS benediction for me, my parents and family, my school the Data Center College of the Philippines, my teachers and my friends who shared their faith in my capability. How relevant and true indeed are the words from Ecclesiastes in the Old testament that everything has a season and a time – a time to love and a time to hate, a time to be born and a time to die – and to paraphrase further, a time to endure hardships with patience, valor and a time to harvest and savor the fruits of genuine sacrifices in one’s studies – particularly this signature achievement of being at the top of the scale. Because of this, I

am receiving tokens and encouragements. Now I am fully aware of the weight of responsibility that is placed on my shoulders to further prove my worth as a human being. I would not be honest if I didn’t recognize a kind of fear and a feeling of inadequacy within me momentarily. Why? May I confess that I am an ordinary girl from an ordinary peasant family of six siblings, two boys and four girls but who are fortunate to have good parents who are both hardworking and honest and who had great dreams for us. As a young child, I knew very early what it felt to be poor. While other children in our neighborhood were enjoying their free time from school- I was working with my mother and older siblings tending our garden of vegetables and fruits – squash, eggplants tomatoes, sitaw(string beans) and ampalaya. This would augment the food in our table plus the little meat from the small poultry of my brother Frederick. Nevertheless, we had a happy family life, believing in a God who cared for us and believing further that if

we strove together to do our best, we would eventually succeed. Because our sitio is about five kms. from my high school , we commuted in a passenger jeep and when I would miss the ride at times, then I would just be waiting for someone, who has a big heart to offer me a free ride even until the brightness of the sun had gone and the darkness of the night had fallen. I could not gain top honors in high school but I was a serious, dedicated student always ready with my homework. During college days the shy type girl back in high school blossomed. I enjoyed participating in cocurricular activities- singing, forensics like debates, declamation and oratorical tilts and in hosting programs. Lady luck came to me later. I was a provincial scholar at Data Center College of the Philippines. Thanks to Governor Imee R. Marcos whose heart bleeds for the poor like me, who are questing for their places in the Sun. Although I missed Latin honors in college because of a technicality ,I

would have graduated cum laude, I am very proud to shout to the world , I had the best teachers who taught me the values of honesty, hardwork, perseverance and dedication in pursuing tasks to completion be they academic or co-curricular. The values they taught us have earned for them the noble appellation for a teacher – “persons with a touch of immortality”. My eternal gratitude to the Data Center College of the Philippines headed by its Chairman Engr. Wilfredo Bactad, Pres. Joseph Sicco and our vice president for academic affairs and the Dean of Education department where I belong, Dr. Vicente A. Bonoan, for the 50 thousand peso cash incentive for placing DCCP in the academic map, but most of all thank you sirs for the unending support. Also, I would like to take this opportunity to thank my parents for everything that they have done for me. Nana ken tata, dakayo ti nangnangruna nga rason ti amin a nagun-udak iti biagko. Dakayo ti gapuna no apay nga ingaedko ti nagadal. You are

the reason why I dreamed big, for your love to me is bigger than what I could imagine. Now,some cynics ask me, how come that a non-honor student like you had made it to the top? My answers are simple: Success is being satisfied with who you are and making the most of yourself. Success is not just waiting for things to come your way but making the most opportunities that you have. It is working and only working hard to every task given, pushing yourself to the limit to become a better person. Allow me in closing, to quote my favorite childhood song. “When you wish upon a star, makes no difference who you are. Anything your heart desires will come to you. When your heart is in your dream, no request is too extreme. When you wish upon a star your dreams come true.” May the Good Lord bless and keep us all safely in His commodious bosom! Thank you!

Introduction for Atty. Leni G. Robredo Hon. Joseph D. Sicco

A MARK OF SUCCESS. Mr. Danilo Dumlao, HRS/HRM instructors and student-organizers strike their best smile behind the giant suman during the 2014 Skills Convergence.

That big suman’s chronicle Llarnie Ventura (Contributor)

Because of the great passion for culinary supremacy and the great desire to create a food that would embody the Ilocano identity, the GREATEST SUMAN of all times was unveiled last September marking a milestone in the history of the institution. This extraordinary suman has a diameter of 10 feet, prepared with love, hard work, unity and dedication by the Class Taripatwen. The suman or the rice cake is a Filipino native delicacy. It is made from glutinous rice cooked in coconut milk. Because of its popularity and ingenuity, different versions of the suman can be found in different parts of the country. There is suman sa binuo, suman sa ibus, suman

sa inantala, sumang kamoteng kahoy, suman latik and many more. However, the Ilocano version of the suman was showcased. This extraordinary dish would surely make one’s eyes pop out and would surely attract one’s gustatorial desires. This extraordinary suman exemplifies the Ilocano way of living. First, the glutinous rice or the diket is a symbol of unity. The diket is a sticky ingredient. They attach themselves to one another. Thus, the diket symbolizes close family ties among Ilocanos. Aside from that, Ilocanos are unified too. The coconut milk is added to the suman in order to enhance its flavor. The suman will not be a suman without the coconut milk. Thus, the Ilocanos, just

like the coconut milk, adds flavor to our national identity. There is always an Ilocano in any part of the country and of the world as well. Thus, the Ilocano became adventurous nay a homo universalis who excels in various fields of endeavor. Lastly, the brown sugar is added to the suman to give a sweet taste. The Ilocanos are sweet. With emphasis, Ilocano love is sweet love. The Ilocano would do everything for the sake of his/her love. He/she could move high mountains or could cross stormy seas for the sake of love. In short, Ilocano love is unconditional, unparalleled and without measure. (adapted from the speech of Mrs. Glorie Jean Maximo during the Skills Convergence 2014)

Personally, I surmise we have with us a guest speaker, who believes in the philosophy of Zen Buddhism- “that unless one empties her cup, it cannot be filled up again”. And so within the ambit of this adage, we must try to empty ourselves of our old ways of behaving, our selfishness and arrogance that we may enter into new humility by undergoing a renewal, a rebirth of our lives in the service of others… Our guest of honor and speaker has been trusted by destiny into public service with the untimely demise of her beloved husband, the late Sec. Jessie Robredo of the DILG, Department of Interior and Local Government, who was an exemplary public servant whose heart and soul bled for the poor and marginalized… whom he wanted to truly empower for them, to live better and productive lives. The tragedy that befell the Robredo family became a turning point in their life, when adversity became a challenge, a challenge into opportunity, and opportunity for our guest speaker to run for a congressional seat that led to triumph and fulfillment when our guest was elected with a landslide victory as representative in the 3rd district of Camarines Sur. As a branch coordinator and lawyer of SALIGAN- Bicol: Saligan is a legal resource NGO doing development legal work with the basic sectors- women, farmers, fisher folk, laborers, the urban poor, the indigenous people, and local communities. SALIGAN seeks to effect societal change by working towards the empowerment of these basic sectors through the creative use of the law and legal resources. This is the heart of our guest speaker’s SALIGAN role , achieving a vision of a society founded on equality and respect. It is for the inclusive growth and development of every individual and sphere in the community. As representative, she has authored various Bill. She is a productive law maker as evidenced by her membership to the various committees in the House of Representative. As a respectable citizen of Camarines Sur 3rd district, she is a spark plug in running the following professional and civic organizations or either chairman, treasurer or member of good standing. While many public servants especially politicians of the local variety, traffic in drama and big issues of the day, but never in the concerns for the survival of the less fortunate and disenchanted, few public servants traffic beyond the limelight and invisible in the madding crowd. But as we pause and ponder in the work of the select few, who honestly toil for the masses of our people someday their lives can be improved, we realize and appreciate their enduring contribution and value as public servants. Such is the mold and style that our distinguished guest and speaker is made of. Ladies and gentlemen – it is my distinct honor and privilege to give you our guest of honor and speaker, the honorable congresswoman of the 3rd district of Camarines Sur, Atty. Leni Gerona Robredo.

FEATURE Jeny Rose Tapia Morning … As the sun rises gladly at the east showering the golden grain of the fields with its breathtaking rays, birds glide from trees to trees happily with their young chirping on their nests. This scene has been a part of my life as a Pasaleng born lady. I am always fascinated with how God loves this place. With its beauty and charm one could say, this is really a paradise out from heaven. Yet this is not only what the morning hours offer. At dawn one could go bathing at the sea while watching sea waves and as fishermen catch fish. This place is also known to be a haven for different varieties of fish. If one is lucky enough on a good summer day, one could see whales out of the blue China Sea… yes, the whales are a sight to behold. I had experienced it once and mind you, that experience is once in a lifetime.

Whale watching in Pasaleng bay, view of the humpback whale from the shore.

Noon… A different kind of noon from other parts of the country is felt here. While others are experiencing a hot breeze, but here even under the summer sun is cold. Sometimes visitors call it “Little Baguio” because of its weather. Some even said, it is a romantic weather where two can weave dreams of a happy life. On September to mid February, the weather is so cold, one needs jacket to survive. This is Pasaleng’s noon for you. Night… Summer nights are things to behold at Pasaleng. One would even wonder if what he sees on the sea are stars directly from heaven floating by at the ocean. But they are not stars. They are fishermen’s lights fishing out under the moonlight. These are nights of hope for life, for as the fishermen come to shore the next waking day, there will be a big catch and the residents will rush to shore for fishes and viands to sell. Farms…Forests…Mountains… Pasaleng, too, is a farming community. Greenfields abound the place on tilling time. The

place is filled with farmers just like ants busy working from mort till dust. Forests… Forests are unique in this place. The forests are clad with robust trees and are inhabited by eagles too. I can still remember when the DENR came here to release an eagle, for it is here where they belong. Yet that is not the end, one can gather wild orchids and different varieties of ferns. Even a botanist from Belgium in the name of Herman Nuytemans had found different varieties of plants that exist only in the forest of magnificent Pasaleng. Mountains… Oh… the majestic mountains that seem to be the fortress of the sun are there guarding the place from the disastrous typhoons of nature. It is a home of wild pigs or the so-called “alingo” and deer. I remember once, my Papa said that during their time deer would come down from the mountain and they would run after them. Unluckily they had not caught one, for how can a man go against the feet of the deer? I hope I could see one but for now the deer are there at the forest, very rare to be seen for they are now afraid of the hunters. People... The industrious people of Pasaleng display a sense of camaraderie, a deep care of brotherhood. They believe in the ever-flowing love of God as evidence of their church, chapels and many more place of worship. They work and sing together that makes Pasaleng a complete paradise. Someday… Someday when you feel a little sadness, a little boredom within your mind, heart and soul, find time to visit Pasaleng, a paradise 97 kilometers north the City of Laoag aboard a vehicle bound to Cagayan. Just tell the bus conductor, “PASALENG” and sure enough he will deliver you there without fail. Pasaleng waits for you.

INGREDIENTS Dried seaweed (nori)- 4 sheets 2 cups cooked rice 2 tsp sesame oil 2 tsp salt TRADITIONAL FILLINGS 1 carrot, julienned cucumber, cut into long strips 2 eggs beef (bulgogi) 1/2 pound of spinach, parboiled pickled radish, cut into strips imitation crab (optional) fishcake (optional)

ALTERNATE POPULAR FILLING SUGGESTIONS: smoked salmon and cream cheese kimchi and cheese spam, mayo, and veggies ham and cheese tuna salad with romaine lettuce and cheese fresh or seasoned vegetables for vegetarians

Procedures: 1. When rice is almost cooled, mix with sesame oil and salt. 2. Stir fry carrots briefly with a dash of salt. 3. Stir fry cucumber with a dash of salt. 4. Whisk eggs until evenly yellow and fry into flat omelet. 5. Cut cooked egg into long strips. 6. Cook bulgogi according to recipe directions. 7. Using a bamboo sushi roller or a piece of tin foil, lay the dried seaweed shiny side down. 8. Spread about ½ cup of rice onto 2/3 of the seaweed, leaving the top 1/3 bare (if you moisten your fingers or a spoon to pat down the rice, you’ll get less of a sticky mess). 9. Lay the first ingredient down around 1/3 of the way up from the bottom of the seaweed. 10. Lay the other fillings down on top. 11. Roll from the bottom (as if you’re rolling a sleeping bag), pressing down to make the fillings stay in. 12. As you continue to roll, pull the whole thing down towards the end of the bamboo mat. 13. Spread a tiny dab of water along the top seam to hold the roll together. Set aside and continue with other seaweed sheets. 14. Cut each roll into 7-8 pieces.

Words of Gratitude

A Thanksgiving Speech During the SIRIB Awards Madam Governor, SIRIB Youth officers, fellow awardees, ladies and gentlemen, good evening! The late President Ferdinand Marcos, the best President that our country has ever produced, said in his book, Marcos Speaks – that we live in an open society because of education. That our educational system is the one democratic factor for social mobility. People from lower classes because of education open to everybody, will desire to rise up to positions of leadership. Thus, only will democracy be meaningful because of education. From this remarks I surmise that he was after a liberal education that would develop the hands, the mind and the soul of the educand to perfection. As one philosopher intoned—education without a religion of the heart is civilized barbarism. And so our colleges and universities both offer the general and special curricula to make a complete human being. The product of such an educational system is the total man, ready to take his respective place in an ever-

5

changing society such as ours today. The SIRIB Awards under the auspices of the Provincial Government headed by the Honorable Imee Marcos I’d like to conjecture, is a vibrant product of that educational policy the late President Marcos advocated. Pudno a sirib iti pangrugianan. The awardees which include me as BLEPT topnotcher in the elementary level, I believe, are ordinary students but because of consistency, perseverance, discipline and hardwork by pushing ourselves to the limit, have achieved extraordinary results in the exams we participated in. Likewise with our colleagues who competed successfully in the various fields- the academe, sports, performance arts, forensics and others. They also did their best and distinguished themselves creditably well in their chosen fields of expertise. The honors awarded to us should challenge every one of us to still do better and not rest on our laurels by building a greater faith and confidence

in ourselves. Faith in being Filipinos who can take care of our affairs. We must, in the drama of life, play the starring role, the rest should be in the supporting cast. As young students, as young professionals and young citizens who live in a growing and productive province, we must help agitate every fiber of the human spirit, nay challenge every member of our young generation into a sense of self-involvement in what our leaders are planning to pursue educationally, socially and culturally for the betterment of our community, province and the nation. This should be a mandate we all should carry to fulfillment—kabaelantayo! Kas pangrikep, ipalubosyo man, iti nagan dagiti padak a nakagun-od ti pammadayaw, agyamankami apo Gobernador Imee Marcos iti tulong nga inpaaymo kadagiti estudiante tapno maitultuloyda iti kinasirib— kinasirib iti panagbasa, kinasirib iti panagtrabaho, kinasirib iti panangtulong kadagiti nakukurapay, tapno magun-od da ti nasaysayaat a panagbiag, kinasirib iti panangpatibker

If you compare big things to small things, then it’s nothing. Why? It’s because each has its distinct characteristics. Comparing is not in the vocabulary of our soul. You don’t know the destiny of everything in the world. Like the ants, if you notice them, you can’t vividly see how they are doing with the tiny look they have yet you can perceive something great in them. Ant is a small kind of animal that burns itself to gather food. If you are used to pass by the road or wherever you could see them, you can notice that they fall in line like behaved ones. They are like humans with sense because they discipline themselves to avoid a crowded way of getting their own food. On their way around, if you again notice that if they bump one another, it’s like their way to say, “Hello! How are you?” Then, the other ants will give way so that one will pass subtly avoiding accident. The ants also have a united attitude. It is because they help each other to carry something that is heavy for one ant only. They also have the capability to think of their future. If you have already read

about the story of the ant and the grasshopper, then you will get what I mean. The ant in the story keeps collecting food everyday because of the coming flood. On the other hand, the grasshopper just keeps on playing complacently like no problem will come. But, when the flood has come, the ant is spared with all the food it has saved for the whole storm while the grasshopper is dying out there in the flood. Look! Ants are just tiny but behind their small appearance, you can find many good values. Don’t just say that they are small and easy to be killed, but have you ever asked yourself what their purpose of being tiny is? Or have you already realized that you may have them as inspiration? No matter how tiny they are, the great thing there is that they have good qualities that can be worth imitating for. Being tiny or small (perhaps in height or in status) is not the deal but the big things that you can do in the world are. In achieving so, remember the adage that goes this way: “Your attitude determines your altitude.”

iti kultura ken iti pammati ti managayat ken manangipateg a Dios. Sapay koma ta agtultuloy iti pannakikaysa dagiti amin nga agtutubo iti gobierno probinsial para ti al-alisto a panangtun-oy iti “paspas dur-as”. We are aware of the adage, “that a debt of gratitude, can

only be acknowledged but never truly repaid” but we are all together in praying that Divine Providence will pour upon you and your loved ones, His abundant blessings always. Thank you! Dios ti Agngina kadakayo amin! - Ms. Noralyn F. Sacoco

Words

The Road Taken

Charie Mae F. Jacob

Words can create happiness. It can heal a wounded heart; it can shape positive value; and it can clear a troubled mind --- in the optimistic side. Nevertheless in its pessimistic side, it can disturb one’s mind, it can break a heart and worst, it can destroy life. In short, WORDS are POWERFUL! A person can tell harsh words yet he could never know that he might hurt someone’s feelings.

Someone may cry afterwards but the wound it had created in his heart and mind will never be vanished. Others say it is better to hurt someone physically for the bruises are evident rather than being brutally wounded through words. We all know that words can destroy life through rumor mongering, fabricating lies and character assassination. Everyone should always put in

Carmela Batinga

mind that a person who talks about another person’s life has the lowest intelligence quotient, as they say. Isn’t it that everybody commits mistakes, that everybody has his own flaws, and that everybody has his own dark past? So why don’t we just shut our mouth, talk about happy things for less words would mean fewer mistakes? A person must always be aware of

the words he utters. If someone commits mistakes, he must admit to himself that he did something wrong and must say “I’M SORRY”. But these words seem to be very elusive in everyone’s tongue, in fact, they are the most difficult words to say. And one thing more, he must mind his own business, reflect on his own life and talk about himself not about other person’s life.

Student Nhicky D. Aquino

They are the students of this generation Who, for once mold their aspiration To take you, too, as an inspiration For their fruitful ambition.

Keep calm, will you? Rosel Anne Ramos

We are often in a hurry We want a problem to be solved in an instant Cure an illness in the blink of an eye We want to be rich in just a wave of the hand We always want a shortcut in everything Not wanting to go to the long process Because we always want an instant remedy An instant cure, an instant solution

Life: A Battlefield Jan Mark Labasan

In a world, where everything is dark and chaotic I live to be a fighter In a world where people are blinded by prejudice I live to care In a world where people are being underestimated I live to give my best In a world where people pull you down I live to step-up and excel In a world where injustice prevails I live to dream bigger In a world where people are cruel I live to be tougher I live the way I have wanted I act the way I feel I don’t care what people say I am contented with the way I am

They say it’s not easy And I agree Yes! I have to decide, I have to choose, And I am free from consequences. Each step seems so dark, But I take the risk to pass It’s like rough stones Turning to brilliant diamonds, Shining on the end of the road. I almost gave up when you came You grabbed my hand and held on tight And then you carried me and whispered; “You are my child , I’ll help you get through,” A sweet loving voice came along to rescue me.

They regularly attend a mass But very tempting not to attend a class If there are so many requirements to pass Their hearts and minds would clash They are maybe mad sometimes If there are untold quizzes But amidst the murmuring they possess They try to do all their best

In a world of chaos I cull to be with you The through fare of my tomorrow Like an eagle ready to soar high With wings’ strength from heaven

Because long process takes patient waiting And patient waiting takes time And mostly we think, We dont have all the time! God wants us to be patient To keep calm and breathe To stay put and relax To believe and have faith Surely, we have a timetable for all our desires But God knows better He knows when to say yes or no His timing is perfect!

The Rain Mark Jones Galera

Ye so sentimental when there is rain Dreaming so bad to the rhythm thy hear With all the sadness and pain we gain Feels so empty, alone, no one cares... But my love for you is like a rain Not the coldness that makes me feel blue Nor because you cause me so hard and pain The drop of it will count my love for you. Though I come only for once But the glimpse of the flower of the Man above Not by want nor by chance We are destined to share our love. Our love that is witnessed by the clouds Ye will last with no more doubts.

Journey Man

Jeny Rose Tapia

I am a journey man

I had travelled on dirty roads

Walked on highways, even crawled

We just have to trust Him Even if it doesn’t make sense Even if it hurts Dont lose hope

On pavement yet I had survived all of these

God is in control Just trust in His timing Because a trusting heart Can never be refused by Him.

Is that the road of indecision

Without qualms, without if’s But the most troubled so far

I had not yet conquered For it baffles my heart

Yet I am a journey man

I will conquer, I will survive!

The wind has something to tell

Bye Potato Prince Kevin Zyder Asis

Aldrich D. Suarez

The wind has something to tell To someone who is about to sleep And to all the memories that fell In a bottomless pit Prisoners welcoming a fugitive

Yeah right, loneliness is a home where I was, And yet I still belong to Please call for my bail bondsman (whisper to the wind) Even though I know she would not come All the wonderful things had gone All the remedies had done The place that once I thought paradise had decayed! And I heard majority of them calling now this, a hell! The wind has something to tell The wind has something to tell The wind has something to tell The wind has something to tell . . .

Child in Me Jeny Rose S. Tapia

A bitter pill came That put myself in the hole It is a bad trait of mine Wasting some pieces of my whole “Later” is always my word of the day Because I know I have a lot of time, and for a while be statue. “On time” is underneath the bay, Yes, I’m a couch potato And I need to get off this hook To change my life in a lively nook And my dreams to be taken seriously To be treasured like for eternity. Call it a day for being lethargic And say hello for being energetic.

I remember days gone I was a child of the sea I ran on the shell-decorated shore Never minding what would happen to me. It used to be this way I swam, like a mermaid in fantasy I never dreamt of the things last so easily I found out I had to grow learning the child in me.

Wall Chamie G. Ibuos

OUR TEACHER Tender persona with a heart of gold possessed with Extraordinary patience exceeding human limits Animated daily to polish every “diamond in the rough”(child/student) to become brilliant

Constant and changeless in pursuing her assigned tasks Happy and felicitous to pupils, students colleagues and bosses alike Excellent worker who plods on even to the depths of night, a Romantic visionary who fashions children to grow and develop into human beings of nobler and finer design

A wall that is very hard to break They tried but they but always failed Because maybe they are afraid So they stop and take a break Then you came and took the challenge You were rejected numerously But you want to pursue badly In breaking this, does it make things change? Or you just break and run away? Possibly you also give up Like the others who relinquish Years, months, days of excruciating Now that it breaks you’re quitting So what is the sense of breaking?

Thank You

Jinky Tolentino

Lucky I’m indeed proud of you For my life is your whole sacrifice What can a child pay back to all your love? To see you in vain, I cry Rough hands and throbbing body of yours is not my deny I am your blood and labors The sleepless nights of you I sigh to know your’e gone, I die These dreams dedicated to you dearest Fruit of your uphill struggle Allow me to give my all To feel your happiness is what I cherish. The tender love you deserve I provide It can’t be seen with your eyes But can be felt by your nature heart To thank you is my forever gratitude.

Yes, that person is our teacher.

A love unloved Llarnie Mae Ventura

If I tell you that love is the force that makes the world go around, would you believe me? Yes, love is a strong force that brings great impact to this oblate spheroid planet. Love is the reason why it was made, why river flows, why you and I were created. Love makes the world revolve continuously yet, in reality, love is not always as good as a bed of roses. Have you fallen in love? Have you experienced giving everything just for love?

What did you get as a reward? I’ve loved once. I felt butterflies in my stomach. My world would suddenly stop every time I would see his smiles; savor his scent that tickles my nose; and stare at his face like an angel’s. It would also disrupt my concentration. It was a beautiful moment like when stars are endowed in the dark sky during the silent night. It was just another fairytale. Our heartstrings were tangled and suddenly, our hearts sang the same song like it

was forever. He gave me beautiful roses, sweet chocolates and inspiring love letters. We danced under the moonlight, we kissed like there’s no tomorrow and we turned very sweet that ants would love to play beneath our feelings. But a fruit isn’t always ripe. There will always come a time that it will rot. It’s Valentine’s Day. It turned out to be very red, as in bloody, broken hearted. I saw his lips I thought would only be fitting

with mine in another girl’s. How painful it was, like my heart was crushed between two heavyweight metals. “Sorry but loving you is one of the greatest mistakes I’ve done in my life.” Those were his words that kept on echoing in my head. I can’t move nor think of what to do. For all I know, this is not a part of our plan. How can he say I’m his greatest mistake? I may be dumb and naïve but I’m not stupid. His words are like all the

bitterness in the world as my tongue would savor spreading it throughout my body. I knew I’ve done everything just to please him. But what did he do in return? He gave me a ton of excruciating pain. I can’t really understand why the law of actionreaction can’t be applied in love. How I wish he can be punished if he violates this law. I think I need nothing but to stay away from this pain with presents and stuff just to relieve my heartache. Petals are not the only part of a rose; it

has also thorns…thorns that will hurt you in case all the petals wither. That is love. There are instances that it will make you happy, but fate sometimes changes it. Love is a blade with no handle. If you don’t use it carefully, it can give you a deep cut that can hurt you deep inside. But I’m so insane. Please come, run with me in this freedom field. Open my eyes and say you love me. I want to think this is only an illusion. Please wake me up from this nightmare.

FILIPINO

Sa paaralan man o kahit saan, Sama-sama magpakailanman.

At sa Ingles “Love conquers all”.

Puso’y Nasaan?

Pamilya Pia Sweet Andrada

DCCP is known as the lowest paying institution when it comes to tuition fee among the private Higher Education schools here in the province. It is simply because the administration wants to help students who have that determination to pursue college but have some financial burdens. Yes, lowest when it comes to tuition fee, but excellent in quality. Over the years, this humble institution proves that it is competent enough to transform every student into a better citizen ready to take the world. -Jayson Amian
