THE OFFICIAL STUDENT PUBLICATION OF THE UNIVERSITY OF THE EAST

Manila Mayor Isko Moreno (left) and University of the East President Ester Garcia.

Mayor Isko threatens to shut down UE

Manila City Mayor Isko Moreno threw tirades against the University of the East (UE) for its non-compliance with the local government unit (LGU) regarding the class suspension. In a Facebook live, Moreno said that he would send a show cause order to UE President Ester Garcia to explain why the University defied the city’s suspension declaration. “Nakakadalawa ka na, Garcia. So maliwanag na mayroon akong kapangyarihan sa 7160 [Republic Act No. 7160] section 16 na pangalagaan ang kapakanan

ng mamamayan that includes you,” he exclaimed. He asked, “Ano ba naman ‘yung one week Madam President Garcia? Malulugi ka ba nang husto sa one week?” The Manila mayor said that he would close down UE should Garcia fail to comply with the show cause order. “So antabayanan po ninyo. After 72 hours, we’ll see, we’ll

try. We will continue to protect the interest of our people,” he added. Earlier, the UE president claimed that mayors have no authority to suspend classes at the tertiary level, according to a highly-placed source. Thus, Garcia canceled classes from Kindergarten to Senior High School only, saying that Moreno’s authority is for “basic education only.” In response, Isko lashed out against the University

You may go,” Moreno exclaimed. “Welcome kayo sa Manila. Pwede kayong magnegosyo dito, no abuse will come in. I will not allow corruption o panggigipit sa negosyante,” he added. Moreno reiterated that he would not also let employers

abuse their power over their employees and clients. “But the sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander. Ayaw ko rin ang negosyante nanggigipit sa kaniyang empleyado, sa kaniyang customer o mga kliyente,” the Manila mayor asserted. In 2019, Isko also threatened UE that he would revoke its permit to operate after the latter did not immediately abide by the city’s class suspension orders.

UE Cal posts 91.67% rating in Architecture boards

The University of the East (UE) Caloocan has yielded a total of 11 architects in the January 2022 Architecture Licensure Examination (ALE). According to the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC), UE Caloocan posted a 91.67% passing rate after 11 out of 12 examinees passed the examination. The said rating is the second-highest passing percentage the UE Caloocan–College of Fine Arts, Architecture, and Design (CFAD) has achieved since June 2016. It can be noted that the college attained a perfect passing percentage in the Architecture board exams in August 2021 and January 2018. Meanwhile, the January 2022 ALE registered a 62.13% national passing rate after 1,370 examinees out of 2,205 aspiring architects successfully making the cut. The PRC conducted the said examination on January 21 and 23, 2022, at several testing centers in the National Capital Region (NCR), Baguio, Cebu, Davao, Iloilo, Legaspi, Lucena, Pampanga, Tacloban, Tuguegarao, and Zamboanga. Board of Architecture Chairman Robert S. Sac and member Robert M. Mirafuente reportedly headed the licensure examination.

NEWS Calls for UE President’s resignation intensify

University President Ester Garcia.

Some University of the East (UE) students and alumni have escalated calls for the resignation of University President Ester Garcia. The issue resurfaced after the UE Faculty Association (UEFA) appealed to University chairman Lucio Tan, demanding Garcia’s “immediate resignation” for refusing to comply with Manila City’s class suspension order. The faculty union believes freshman Cayla Balatayo said that Garcia’s decisions caused she saw “nothing new” with embarrassment to the University UE’s continuous ignorance of and “tainted” its reputation. students’ welfare. The UE community did not “One thing I noticed is that mince words in expressing ‘nasanay’ na ang karamihan sa its disappointment with ganyang pamamahala ng admin the University president’s (administrasyon)... Daniel Lopez also agreed that Garcia should resign, mentioning the University’s denial of athletic scholarships and disbandment of several sports teams. “Day before ng class kami tinanggal kaya ‘yung ibang mga walang pambayad ng tuition napatigil sa pag-aaral,” Lopez lamented. Meanwhile, alumna Winnie Diaz disagreed with the calls to take down Garcia, saying that the University president “has been instrumental in UE’s turnaround.” Diaz even said that the reasons of the students were “shallow,” asserting that Garcia just wanted to provide quality education. “You can’t find someone as competent as her. Ang dami niyong hanash (say), pero ‘di niyo naman kino-question ‘yung credibility ng mga signatory sa ‘apelang’ ‘yun,” commented Reign Chyng, in the Facebook post by the DAWN. Alumnus John Marc Aguillon countered individuals who claimed that the students’ grounds for requesting Garcia to resign were “shallow.” “Dami dito nagsasabi na sobrang OA (overacting) daw ng mga gusto pababain si Ester. Masyadong mababaw daw reason para gawin yon, pero makikita mo halos lahat matatanda na,” Aguillon exclaimed. “Ang dami na niyang naperwisyong estudyante not just in pandemic but in the past 5 years, ganyan na sy RT-PRC a magdesisyon,” he underscored.

The UE administration explained that they deferred the announcement since they needed to “internally” discuss first the inclusion of classes in UE Caloocan. Furthermore, the University officials also discussed the possible impact of the class suspension on the academic calendar. The Commission on Higher Education (CHED) reportedly mandates that students must have at least 51 class hours per semester. Earlier, the University finally moved the opening of the second semester, A.Y. 20212022, to January 24.

EDITORIAL “AUTONOMOUS” CARD

“Ang dami na niyang naperwisyong estudyante not just in pandemic but in the past 5 years, ganyan na siya magdesisyon.” It has always been the “trademark” of the University of the East (UE) to be the most rebellious and controversial university in Manila on class suspension. A trademark that even graduates of this University can attest to and make tales of at any given day. Even way before the pandemic, students have already been airing their frustration and disappointment over the never-ending decision of the University administration to counter the suspension announcements of the city government. And up until today, it is as if the University has not learned its lesson. Just this January of the year 2022, another Isko-vs.-Garcia dispute startled not only the UE community but also had its nationwide reach. It can be noted that this was the very same issue in 2019. In June of the same year, Manila City Mayor Isko Moreno suspended classes at all levels due to continuous rainfall in the region. And what became not so surprising for the Warriors was when UE President Ester Garcia stood firm in disobeying, taking no notice of the safety of the students, which most of them already expected. It reached the point where Moreno had to threaten Garcia in revoking the institution’s permit if it would continue to defy the said order. Yet after such a threat, the president backpedaled and followed through with said suspension. Many have thought that that would be the last one, but Garcia’s stubbornness has worsened this year. The disobedient president had once again shown off her true colors after ignoring the city government’s weeklong suspension for the mental health break of the students. The outgoing Mayor then took a big leap, issuing a show-cause order regarding the matter. Only after this order did Garcia compromise and adjust the school calendar, moving the start of classes a week after the initial schedule. At this point, it has become a cycle that the University’s students have been dealing with like an endless loop. We have been fooled by their very much promising tagline #UECares when they always put their constituents at risk and, as such, very

evident even before the pandemic hits. Every rainy season, it has always become a dilemma for students whether to attend their classes or not. Why? Because the University does not even initiate suspending classes, forsaking the safety of the students. It didn’t even commit to checking the welfare of the students if they will have difficulty commuting, especially since the areas of the campuses are prone to flooding. It seems like it has become the norm as they usually use the “autonomous” card. And now that the pandemic has been wrecking the mental health of most people, the least thing that the administration can do is provide them with a break. Isn’t being compassionate a part of caring for its students? There is no need for the student councils to address this issue and justify the need for a rest. The University should be proactive in checking the situation of the students since it caters to families belonging to either the middle or lower class. Granting them their need to rest is just a must. After all, this is just a small payback for removing the scholarship, right? Speaking of scholarship revocation, up until today, many students, like student-athletes, are crawling their way back to enrolling at the University. The start of the semester should have been filled with celebration, for they are exempted from paying their tuition fee. Yet, the sudden removal of scholarships forced many students to work and, worse, stop their schooling and put their dreams on hold. This is a call to the UE administration to embody and stand for what is written in their mission statement. It has been years, yet there is no evident change in managing the institution. When will the University adapt to the needs of its constituents? Does it have to wait for the enrollment to significantly decline? “Pamantasan Ka Naming Mahal” is easier said than done if the University will not calibrate its existing policies. It cannot be denied that everything is a business, and the pandemic has really exhausted our institution. But then again, who would care for these students, if not the one they considered their second home? If the administration continues to ignore the calls of its constituents, it just proves it’s incompetent and how it neglects its responsibilities to feed its interests.

The State of the LGBT Community in a Christian Society

The Dedicated Heart

AFTER being colonized by the Spaniards for three centuries, it may not seem too surprising for their Christian influence to still have a tight grip on Philippine society. The majority of the population follows the teachings of the Catholic faith, using it to guide their moral compass, which may also affect their perceptions of particular societal issues. That is why it was no surprise when frowns and creases were drawn to that one question during the presidential interview by award-winning journalist and host Ms. Jessica Soho. A question that no one could argue to be one of the most debatable matters at hand: same-sex marriage; half of the presidential candidates said “no,” while the other half replied, “no, but….” Taking a negative stance makes sense since the candidates would want to earn the votes of the population’s bulk. It was unsurprising for Senator Manny Pacquiao to be against it, given his highly religious reputation and infamous statements opposing the LGBTQ+ community. Meanwhile, Manila Mayor Isko Moreno’s response may seem quite ironic, especially given how he even had some pedestrian crossing lines in Manila painted to resemble the pride flag. On the other hand, Vice President Leni Robredo and Senator Ping Lacson’s responses try to look beyond the confines of the Christian definition of marriage. If treated as a sacred sacrament, both expressed their disagreement but clarified that they do agree with allowing same-sex unions if facilitated through civil and legal means. Hearing these responses shows how sensitive of a topic LGBTQ+ relationships are in this country, given how religious beliefs still dominate the mindsets of many. Most Filipinos justify their heteronormative supremacist ideals by saying that it goes against what is written in their book of faith, not realizing that credences are subjective and that the Bible does not hold true to non-Christians. Many individuals forget that there’s more to being a good person than just going to church or relying on prayers being uttered every hour. One must also learn to practice what they preach: simple acts

of kindness and openness towards learning to respect others must also be taken into consideration. Because wouldn’t it be called hypocrisy if we were to shamelessly act against the very passages we are so proud to brag about? Personal preferences are harmless and generally do not affect others; hence, these should not anger nonsupporters or become an avenue for hatred and rage. Let’s try to visualize it this way: if someone enjoys cake, but you prefer ice cream, you don’t judge or condemn the person who has a taste for cake, right? Similarly, just because people don’t see themselves fancying such things does not mean they should denounce others for liking it. Hating others for wanting to love and be loved does not make sense. We know that romantic relationships between heterosexuals involve companionship, support, being there for each other, and helping one another become better versions of themselves as they live life together; LGBTQ+ relationships are not any different. However, religion isn’t the only thing stopping the legalization of those mentioned above, but also the very Constitution of this nation. Executive Order No. 209 of the Family Code of the Philippines, crafted on July 6, 1987, states that “marriage is a special contract between a man and a woman,” which is why a constitutional revision may be required if it were to be legalized. Given how much time and money it

takes for this country to solve minor cases, it may not seem possible to set this in motion unless a different law legalizes same-sex civil unions. Naturally, what is ideal isn’t real, and what is logical may still be overpowered by the emotional. With the mob mentality of the laggards who refuse to view the world from another lens, it may be difficult for such actions to come to fruition. Alas, the government cannot deny the increasing number of the members of the community as more are being enlightened regarding their own identities and preferences── a fact that high-placed officials should consider by creating programs to educate people to be more accepting, or at the very least learn to develop a sense of tolerance. Instead of burning people at stake or throwing rocks at them, there should be proper education for coherent communication to develop a sense of appreciation for the fellow citizens of this nation. It’s alright to believe in religion, but too much reliance on faith may end up blinding one’s capability for further cultivating one’s intellect. Instead of spending so much time hating others for how they live their lives, why not just use that time to nurture one’s own? People are born to live and die; what they choose to do with their time and whom they’ll choose to be and be with is nobody else’s business but their own. Wouldn’t it be better to live in a world that loves all kinds of love? Although the world may be cruel at times, love is still the one that makes it beautiful. Whether the country legalizes same-sex marriage or not, what matters the most is for people to develop a sense of open-mindedness to take another step closer to understanding and accepting the identities of others.

FEATURES 11:59 P.M. Canvas notification. Wheel of names. McGraw Hill. 7:30 A.M. classes. These are simply the things that got you overwhelmed, unnerved, and perhaps, even thrilled throughout college. They were strangers to us when they came to our doors, acquaintances knowing it’s a requirement to meet and mingle with them all, and then companions whose memories with us eventually feel sentimental now that the end closes to our feet. You’d usually wallow in dread as you anticipate the most awaited last recitation day. Instead of beating those deadlines, you’d think it would be more practical to just sit still and prepare for your mental breakdown because you can never escape it. A logic almost on par with a soldier who’s verily aware that his enemies take no prisoners and thus has decided to surrender his life to fate. Yet, hope would flourish once you received a notification embellished with words like, “May gawa ka na ba? Ako wala pa.” Each struggling student who’d come to find themselves facing a crossroad would agree that these were the most comforting words they could ever hear at that moment. As much as they can ignite a spark of either motivation or risky agreement to procrastinate together, these dialogues bring a particularly consoling fact, especially now that all are barred by screens and stuck in their own homes. What is it if not the fact that they reassure you that you’re not alone? How about waking up with morning calls? It brings you butterflies until you notice something’s wrong, your classmate repeatedly mentioning your name in the group chat. Anxiety will kick in, and so are questions that can be more arduous than the examinations themselves. Did you miss something? It may be the attendance, your first class, an assignment a while ago, or maybe, just maybe, you’re overthinking--- It is just your tropa asking you whether you would attend class or not. Of course, everyone gets filled with excitement when celebrations draw near. You have been planning these get-togethers since the first day of examinations, and you sure would not let it slide. It may be as simple as eating with your friends at Gastam or online chikahan, or maybe as extravagant as renting a condo, hotel, or resort for your night out. Whatever and wherever it takes you, it is the stories, the drunken moments, the bond, and the people that matter at the end of the day and beyond. It does not end on the day you have to pack your bags and go home; there will still be the aftermath of the party where you would gleefully talk and laugh about the things that happened during that day.

Those

Red days

Who would forget about the moment when you got a low score on a quiz, and all you need to hear is a word from your classmates telling you that they got lower scores than yours? Instead of crying over a one-digit number and the expectations of people who’ve never really come to understand your pain and hardships, you’d have yourself drowned in the magic your friends possess. Magic that will remind you that dwelling over the past will only hinder you from reaching what lies in the future. College may be the most challenging years of your academic life, but one cannot deny that it allowed us to see the gaps of our earlier years so that we could rebuild ourselves and the very dreams that caused us numerous nights of tears. We have learned to show our vulnerabilities. We discovered that sometimes, not all decisions lead to the result we’ve visualized. We have also realized that while we doubt ourselves nonstop, there’s strength and resilience that keep us going no matter what. From these weaknesses, we have created the strongest bonds. Who would have imagined that you once walked into a room of strangers or entered a Google Meet with letters of different colors and unknown faces, but now they are more than just classmates? They’ve become families whom you can talk to until the break of dawn. Who would have thought that the people in that four-cornered room would be the people who would be with you on your academic and personal endeavors? Who would picture that the names on Google Meet are the names engraved in your memories? Those days that we bleed red are the days that we are toughest. We may have had a hard time facing the challenges that college life has to offer, but we are called Warriors for a reason: we fight not just for ourselves but for our fellow Warriors and the fief we’ve built with them as well.

FILIPINO

Pagbitaw sa Nakasanayan n i Am by Mariell e L. Masigla t

SPORTS Politics Over Talent: The Downfall of Philippine Sports

Lhara Clavano turns pro; finds home in PLDT By: Jessica Ann S. Evangelista

AS WICKED as the reality may be, one cannot deny that Filipinos and sports enthusiasts will only acknowledge your success when it is made of gold, silver, or bronze. The story of determination and endless pursuance to thrive will only receive blinding light when it’s a victor’s path, not one of those yet to obtain a piece to prove their worth to their own country. The Philippines has long been known for its hardworking and talented individuals, primarily in the world of sports. And yet, the lack of support, may it be monetary or moral, remains an enduring problem that might as well threaten the future of Philippines Sports.
