21 October — 7 January First Floor Gallery Launch: Saturday 21 October, 4-6pm, all welcome Emma Hart and Jonathan Baldock have envisaged Punch and Judy’s puppet booth house as an oversized, darkly humorous place in which the pressure of domestic life is combined with the ever-present threat of violence. A series of interiors, installed as if they are the booths of an Ideal Home exhibition, contain sculptures: a string of greasy sausages spells out the cautionary phrase, ‘YOUR BACK’, and an oven is stacked with anthropomorphic pots and pans. The booths are squashed down by a giant illuminated thumb, and a raspberrycoloured carpet oozes out beneath. Nearby, a film shows darkening tensions between Hart and Baldock as they go about their domestic routine.

EMMA HART AND JONATHAN BALDOCK
The Way Things Are extends Voss’ interest in romantic longing that exists between desire and experience. He finds something simultaneously prosaic and profound about the British seaside pier. Offering a familiar but inscrutable promise of enjoyment, there is a simple impulse to reach the end, with the melancholic yet reassuring certainty of returning. Voss describes his sculpture as ‘a metaphor for secure adventure’.

Roy Voss’ new commission is drawn from the artist’s memories and Victorian lithographs: a skeletal object that conjures an idea of a pier.
