WELCOME
Welcome
TO YOUR JULY 2020 ISSUE By Matt Everatt F.O.T.A I Editor
I
t is with great sadness and a heavy heart that I write this welcome letter as your new editor of The Dental Technician Magazine. Larry Brown has left a void in our profession that will prove very difficult to fill in terms of his passion and drive to raise the profile of Dental Technicians. Sadly, Larry passed away in May 2020. I had the chance to chat with Larry last year at the Dentistry Show and we shared ideas and ways
to improve access to education and training for all technicians. He will be sorely missed. Alas, I have to say my new role as Editor is one that I am extremely proud of and to follow in the footsteps (or shadow) of such a truly awesome professional and gentleman is such a driver for me. I can tell you that I share the same passion for our profession and in particular, in line with Larry, I want to do all I can to raise our profile within the dental team.
The Dental Technician Magazine has been the magazine I have read monthly ever since being a 16 year old student starting out at Sheffield College. I avidly read the job section, usually first, and then went to the articles! For some months now, behind the scenes, the team have been developing a fantastic online learning platform, giving our readers access to online verifiable eCPD. We have been forming an editorial panel of some of the most well respected technicians and names from within UK Dental Technology and we are incredibly excited about the future for the magazine, in particular, for our readers. My hope is to have an editorial panel that includes all areas of dental technology, including technicians from all of our disciplines, suppliers and manufacturers. The aim is to give varied, educational and unbiased editorial. We are certainly in a very curious and bizarre situation following the lockdown caused by Covid19. As labs begin to reopen and practices begin their journey of reopening, we will see a new landscape develop. We are already seeing an increase in dentists sending in digital impressions. This can only be a good thing for us as technicians, the increase in accuracy is valuable in itself, not to mention the risk of cross infection from receiving traditional impressions. Some labs may not be quite ready to make the digital leap, we hope that by sharing our stories and expertise, we can help some make that leap. For now, I want to wish each and everyone of you all the very best in the coming months. I hope your businesses can survive and thrive in the new normal. I want to say a huge thank you to those that read the magazine and hope that you will encourage others to pick it up and read it too. I also want to say again, how incredibly honoured I am to take the role of editor and that I can honestly say, being in Larry's shadow will certainly spur me on the deliver great content and a magazine he would be proud of.

OUR 3D PRINTING JOURNEY MAGNA - THE 'GREAT' 3D PRINTER: TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE? By Matt Everatt F.O.T.A I Editor
A
ccording to my Facebook time line, just over 8 years ago we purchased our first 3D printers. Our 3D Printing journey started back in 2005 when we hired a consultant to look into the feasibility of 3D Printing/rapid prototyping to replace our traditional plaster room. Very quickly we were told that we were perhaps 'too early to the game'. Cost of model printing was coming out at around ÂŁ60 per model at that time. Sufficed to say we waited a few more years and our first sip into 3D Printing began by outsourcing to a rapid prototyping company who would make parts for the likes of F1 cars. Fast forward to 2012 we made the significant investment and bought our first printers. Now, it wouldn't be fair to list our failures along the way as we have had some incredibly low points in our 3D print journey, however for the most part we have continued to improve and develop. Today we have something pretty spectacular, almost too good to be true. A few years into our 3D Printing journey, no let's call it an expedition, as it had its highs and lows by the way, we were contacted by a punchy start up firm called Photocentric. They were new to the dental market. The Peterborough based outfit invited us to see their facility sometime around 2014 and showcased some of their latest technology. We explained what our 3D Printing needs were and they arranged to have one of their prototype machines delivered to us to run some trials. Safe to say we failed and the machine was returned in a worse state than it arrived to us, mainly due to several component failures leading to resin leaks. We carried on with our existing set up for a while and began introducing a lot of Formlab units in hope to keep up with demands. As our business grew our need to produce 3D printed models in volumes and at speed was becoming an issue. We visited the IDS in Cologne in the hope to make a purchase of a machine that could deliver what we needed. It looked promising and we did indeed make a purchase and the future looked rosey, until we began using the technology. Our search started again! One of our managers had done a lot of research and on the top of his list was Photocentric and their new Magna printer. On paper this unit looked exactly what we needed. But, we had previously failed with an early
Photocentric prototype and we could still remember the disappointment. We decided to give them another chance. We arranged a visit to see the Magna and to speak with their technical and sales team. The unit was so much more polished and not like the protype of previous years. The figures they gave us on the machine cost, print run times and resin cost was incredible! Too good to be true we thought!! Remember, we have been here before with lots of printers and manufacturers! The Photocentric team were so sure that they could prove their technology would work and fit with our needs that they offered us a deal, again, too good to be true! They gave us the machine for 3 months and we had an agreement that if the machine didn't deliver what they say it would and we were not 100% happy, they will come and collect the unit and no money will exchange hands. If we were happy with the unit, we simply settle the invoice at the 3 month cut off date. Too good to be true, we were still thinking! We went ahead. A couple of days in, we started having problems. Here we go again! We called their tech team and they sent out their top tech. He showed us the simple things that we had failed to do correctly and gave us some great tips. We immediately began successfully running prints. The Magna has a huge build platform and the LCD technology means prints began flying off the machine, often quicker than we could prepare build platforms. Now, this was really becoming too good to be true. It had to
www.dentaltechnician.org.uk
fail! Something had to go wrong. We surely cannot have this printing solution at these prices, with this speed and reliability. Better still, the models were coming off crisp, clean and accurate. We agreed an end date for our trial and said if we continue with the successes we will not only pay for this one, we will buy a second unit and we will commit to buying the cure and wash systems from them too. Sure enough, the date came and we made our purchases. The Magnas have been an incredible introduction and have saved our skin. The initial unit cost is very attractive when compared to others in the dental market and with the build platform size at 510 x 280 (23.6" LCD) it is huge. As for the resin and running costs of the Magnas, again, there is nothing currently available in the dental sector coming close to them. Shortly after we purchased our units, we discovered that Blueprint Dental had taken on the distribution of the printers. This was great news to me. I know most of the team at Blueprint and I can honestly say that they have a fantastic product to sell. The Magna is nothing shy of 'Great' (Latin translation). It did all feel too good to be true, I am so glad we gave them a try. We were so pleased with the set up that we decided to overhaul our whole 3D production room. We have had custom made stainless units and cabinetry made to house the printers, wash and curers to fit with our work flow to give us the best efficiencies. I understand that Blueprint Dental may also be offering the bespoke steel solutions to other dental labs too.

BLENDER FOR DENTAL - THE NEW AFFORDABLE ALTERNATIVE FOR DENTAL CAD
W
hilst the skill and craftmanship of dental technicians remains paramount in the UK’s dental industry, there is no doubt that the evolution of digital dentistry is advancing into the world of mainstream dental laboratories and more and more dental businesses are considering adopting digital solutions into their everyday activities and routines. But how do you make that first step and dip your toe into the world of digital dentistry for the first time? A little daunting, isn’t it? Well, no, it doesn’t have to be. At first glance, it may seem like a formidable prospect. There are lots of new terms to learn and consider - digital impressions, digital workflows, 3D Printing, to name but a few – plus a seemingly new way of working with techniques and equipment which are totally digital and that’s not to mention the costs. They’re astronomical, right? Again, no, they don’t have to be. Enter Blender For Dental. Blender For Dental has been designed by dental technicians for dental technicians and is rapidly being seen as a real gamechanger in the realms of dental CAD globally. Its basis is the free to download, open source, Blender software and its beauty is that from that point you just purchase and download the modules you require for your business. The model designer is complemented by a gum design module, splint design module and tray design module, as well as modules for crowns, articulator & facebow, ICP alignment and guides. Each module is accompanied with an online tutorial and there’s bags more experience, advice and bespoke training available from Blueprint Dental. Over the course of the last few weeks webinar-based training has also been really successful, enabling technicians to complete training without the need for face to face contact. UK specialist and Blender For Dental accredited trainer Andrew Wheeler of AW Precision Ceramics says of Blender For

The software is easy to use and the team are approachable and flexible, always working to provide enhancements and push forward with new modules for both traditional design work and more complex orthodontic techniques. We would welcome anybody who would like to find out more to join one of our introductory webinars in which we discuss the merits of the Blender For Dental approach.”

Dental, “If you are starting out on the digital journey this is an excellent way to get on board. It is fully customizable and, in a market where CAD tends to take away the individuality of our work, blender4dental gives you a way of standing apart from the crowd. There are numerous options to design your models in a creative way and with the addition of adding your logo onto models and trays, your laboratory can stand apart.”

Larry touched the lives of thousands of people during his career and many of these people have kindly written to me to pay tribute to Larry, highlighting his willingness to guide and mentor colleagues to help them improve their skills and careers. I’m very grateful for these messages and thoughts as they have helped me deal with a very difficult time. Larry was an amazing man who I feel very privileged to have been married to, he always said, 'tomorrow’s another chance to get it right' and he truly believed this as he bounced out of bed every day and got on with living the best life he could. He was my soul mate and I will miss him with every ounce of my being . Like many of us, I have a bounty of memories of great times that were always fun-filled. BAR TRIBUTES HEADER JULIE AND MAGNUS UNDERHAY LARRY BROWNE OR SIR LARRY AS I HAVE ALWAYS CALLED HIM WAS A GREAT INFLUENCE IN MY DENTAL CAREER. l I first met him when I was 18 at Panadent but did not know him that well at the time he actual scared me! It was more when I started working for Shofu Dental Products Ltd and he was an Advisor that I got to know him more. We spent many a time doing courses and especially with the Shofu Shade Eye where he taught me all about shade, hue value and Chroma and the importance of how shade taking correctly can make all the difference to any aesthetic work! We went on many a road trip including IDS where he worked alongside our larger Shofu Family and we enjoyed many a function of great food and wonderful dancing (Larry was a real good Ballroom dancer) and the original Dental Shows where Larry worked alongside Mark Bladen and Mark Wade demonstrating the Shade Eye and other Shofu Laboratory products, but the one I remember well is when we went to Southern Ireland to do a two day joint Clinical and Laboratory course at Cork Dental hospital, along with Mark Bladen - also a Shofu Advisor - and Tim Horwood (The then UK Manager at SDPL). What a trip with Larry, shade taking the colour or my Helio Yellow Car as he could not believe how bright it was! To Larry, training the dentist to take shades with the Shade Eye, and then Mark using the clinical information training the Dental Technicians to make the crowns for live patients. Larry was so enthusiastic that the two days went with a smile a giggle and great success. One other great memory from SDPL was when Sir Larry was first introduced to Jenny our office Manager over the phone. He told her he was “Tall Dark and Handsome” well 1 out of 3 is not bad - she did get a shock when he walked in the office. Ever since, Jenny always greeted Larry as “Hello, Mr tall, dark and handsome” followed by bursts of laughter - like the Sir title, Larry took these terms of endearment in the lovely way only Larry could. In more recent times on my return to Shofu UK I had many meetings with Larry regarding the Shofu Eye Special, and the new Shofu products that were becoming available as normal as Larry was so much about the whole dental team he was a great advocate of the Camera and recommended it to a few dentists along with other Shade taking alternatives. Larry has always been a great supporter of Shofu products whether within his own laboratory or demonstrating them as an advisor which is something I will always be grateful for. Myself and Magnus both benefitted from Larry’s great advise from me moving my career on a different level to Straumann, even though I was worried I would not have the ability to work there Larry made sure I was well prepared and always there to help when I needed it. Magnus first meet Larry at Straumann’s Uckfield office on a synOcta training day and not long after that Magnus did the Shofu porcelain course at Larry’s Laboratory at Surbiton. When Magnus was made redundant Larry straight away gave him an interview and a job offer followed. Which Magnus only turned down because he set up his own laboratory.

Magnus was always very grateful of that offer and it gave him something to fall back on if needed. The advice Larry gave him when his was setting up his own laboratory and about hiring staff has left a lasting legacy for both of us. Larry was a great supporter of the South East Study Club that we set up in 2015, he was our first speaker and gave his time and advise for free, he continued to support us attending most meetings and doing write ups about the club for the Dental Technician. Larry would always find time to speak with the delegates and speakers at the meetings something I am sure everyone appreciated. Especially the Sponsors whilst he no longer had a lab he was always interested in the new developments that were on show. Throughout Larry’s career he always pushed for Dental Technicians to be part of the Dental Team and encouraged Technician to come out from the back room, this we believe many technicians took on board and along with many other forward thinking technicians Larry made Dental Technology and Technicians more professional. This was proven when he was the first Dental Technician to be invited to become a Fellow of the International Team for Implantology (ITI). On a personnel note Larry and Sue became great friends and even attended our wedding sitting on the family table. We owe a great deal to Larry, but mostly his enthusiasm for the dental industry, and his loyalty as a friend has enhanced our life even though now there is a Sir Larry shaped hole in our lives. Rest in Peace Sir Larry, our world has been enhanced by your presence and you have left us all better people with knowledge and understanding . God Bless.

LARRY BROWNE, ONE OF THE BEST TECHNICIANS I EVER HAD THE HONOUR TO KNOW, AN AMAZING PERSON AND MUCH LOVED FRIEND.
MEMORIES OF LARRY l I was first introduced to Larry
l Larry had a heart of gold and was a very passionate supporter of Den-Tech and the work we do, only recently having donated thousands of pounds worth of second hand dental laboratory equipment and books to our cause, he would always pester me for information and articles both on Den-Tech and any orthodontic techniques for his much loved Dental technician Magazine. I will miss seeing you at our meetings, at the dental shows, I miss your smile, your chat, your hugs and your bloody minded stubbornness and passion for all you believed in. You were an absolute legend Larry and I will miss you forever. Sleep well my much loved friend x
Browne in 1999 when I joined Chaperlin and Jacobs Ltd and I was lead into his lab by Lynford Chaplin my boss then and they were great mates. I was told this was the gentleman to come to if I ever needed help or guidance in this industry, and how right he was. He has been an absolute fountain of knowledge and help to me and people who I have steered his way with practical knowledge of the trade or just general tips for running a lab and suggestions for the way forward. He prided himself on championing the British Dental technician, and represented us all in various corners of the world sharing his knowledge. He helped me with my focus into helping set up Veterans Bite Back, and was always there to help and support at events. The likes of Larry are slowly disappearing - a true Gent. Thank you for your time my friend, rest easy.
SHARAZ MIR IRRESPECTIVE OF AGE AND PHYSICAL STATURE, LARRY WAS ONE SPRITELY INDIVIDUAL, WITH A STORY TO TELL AT EVERY MOMENT‌HE WILL BE SORELY MISSED. l Having known of Larry in my formidable years as a dental technician but never really being acquainted with him until Blueprint Dental started their dental laboratory division some 5 years ago, he became an instant advocate of the business. We were so grateful for his support for our fledgling lab business he always had time to give us a few pointers and words of encouragement. It is unimaginable how this man managed to juggle the number of causes he was involved with and still have time to sit down with you and explain the virtues and histories he had experienced over the years. His knowledge was vast, yet his thirst for the future and the industry as a whole was unbelievable, being a huge advocate for positive change and development in the industry, especially in the arena of digital dentistry. We offer our sincerest condolences to his friends and family as there will never be anyone like him again. However, we take solace in the ever lasting legacy Larry has left on the industry for those to come.

‘
Polite, calm, and considerate’ are all words which help define what it means to be a gentleman - Larry Browne was all these and so much more as Paul Martin of Prestige Dental recalls. Having initially met up with Larry in the early 80’s “Larry was always willing to help,” comments Paul, “he really knew what was happening in the lab industry and always made time to help with great pointers and advice on precision attachments. This fuelled my own interest to the point that today I’m referred to in the trade as ‘Mr Attachment’ - a title which Larry must take some credit for.”
Lucy Gabbitas & Larry - Vets Bite Back
Another element to Larry was his boundless generosity and enthusiasm for everything dental, as was evident when he visited Prestige Dental in 2018. His real interest in meeting the team and finding out more, made for a real fun day and helped us see the business from a different perspective, emphasising how far we had come in 30 years. Larry continued to actively support good causes throughout his career, and the last time Prestige met up with him was at a charity fundraiser for Veterans Bite Back in Portsmouth last September. Despite serious family illness, he attended and was as entertaining as ever, lending his support to yet another good cause spawned by the industry he loved. To say Larry will be missed throughout the lab industry is an understatement. At Prestige Dental we are indebted to him for his outstanding contributions, both professional and personal. RIP to a true gent. Meeting staff on Larry's visit

MY PERSONAL BATTLE WITH COVID-19 By Jim Glidewell I CDT Back in February this year myself and two colleagues were invited to Glidewell Laboratory in Irvine California. The visit was to meet with Randy Clare, one of the Business Development Directors, with a view to working with them providing Mandibular Advancement Splints in the US. Although I didn’t personally meet Jim Glidewell, the sole Shareholder and Owner, it felt like I had. His management team and staff spoke extremely highly of Jim and had a great deal of respect for him as the owner of this huge dental laboratory giant.
T
o most, COVID-19 remains an invisible menace. For all the headlines and historic disruption, it’s a statistical minority who have any firsthand experience with the illness itself.
Regrettably, I’m one of them. When I walked into the hospital on March 23, I weighed 230 pounds. Twelve days later, leaving in a wheelchair, I weighed 203 pounds. I couldn’t walk, and could scarcely talk. The intubation left me depressed, and the drugs administered left me confused. But I’d survived, whereas so many others haven’t. The doctors and nurses couldn’t have been nicer. During the second night, I was given a drug that would “help me sleep.” I woke up around 2 a.m. so confused that I climbed out of bed to use the bathroom - not realizing I was connected to an assortment of tubes and a catheter. I’d pulled the tubes
The worst of it was the intubation. My personal doctor debated its necessity, but the hospital staff won out. I suppose we’ll never really know what role the procedure played in my recovery, but two days in, I was suicidal. Lying there alone between nurse visits, staring at the ceiling. If I’d had a switch that would have ended it all, I would have turned it off, certain I wasn’t going to make it. But I also worried about my wife and kids. I couldn’t even tell them goodbye. I couldn’t speak, and my cell phone battery was dead. Would they be all right? Had I done enough to ensure their health and happiness? I had similar thoughts about my company - the extended family of Glidewell Jim Glidewell in hospital recovering from COVID-19
It was a surprise to hear that just 4 weeks after we returned from our visit, Jim was taken seriously ill with Covid19. In this article he shares his experience, now he lives to tell the tail. Matt Everatt I Editor

NEWS FROM BAR OVERSEAS HEADER employees and customers, and all the great work that they do. After 50 years, could it all unravel so quickly? I was fortunate to be included in a clinical trial for Remdesivir, a drug that I believe helped me recover. After waiting several days for the drug to arrive, we saw improvement after two days of IV delivery. My temperature dropped from 100 degrees to 98.6, and stayed there. I feel the combination of virus and treatment has left me with a permanent decrease in vital lung capacity - probably 10% or more. But I can live with that. It’s a fair price to still be here, watching over my family and company. I’m also proud to see how well they fared in my absence. It renews my hope that at least some of what we do may extend beyond our own fragile lifetimes. That the sacrifices we make, the experiences we share, the lessons we impart, can be used to improve and sustain those we must eventually leave behind. We all get only so much time. Our legacies are determined by how we spend it. I’m grateful to the dedicated health care providers who were there to aid me, and I’m continually inspired by those of you who’ve

similarly committed your professional lives to serving the health and well-being of others. It’s why I joke that my “exit strategy” is “a pine box.” Dentistry has provided me with so much, I can’t simply walk away into some golden notion of retirement.
All I can do is try to give back. For everything we’ve accomplished, there are so many exciting developments on the horizon. And I feel I owe it to dentists and patients everywhere to see them through. Spending whatever time I have left helping to ensure you’re successful with yours.

FOCUS
VISOR LAB PROFESSIONAL PPE
T
here is no doubt that the COVID-19 pandemic took the UK by surprise, but the effect on the Dental Industry was felt almost immediately, with an uncertain future ahead of us. Rather than sitting idle during this time, as a group of four UK based Dental Labs we decided to take matters into our own hands and set about working on a way that we could support the industry. Getting back to work quickly and safely would clearly be imperative, so to the drawing board we went! We asked ourselves how, as experienced and resourceful technicians and lab owners, we could support our customers in returning to day-to-day working, when we got the go ahead.
16
We wanted to create a high quality, outstanding product that would be made in Britain, using British materials, supplying directly to the British Dental Industry. Securing high quality PPE from outside of the UK would be difficult for some time, and after all, shouldn’t we promote the skills and abilities of the British industry? We therefore collaborated to create the first version of our safety visors. Created by using our 3D printing capabilities with Asiga, we printed as many visors as we were physically capable of producing, working through the night on many occasions to get product out of the door to those in need. We donated substantial amounts of these to
www.dentaltechnician.org.uk
FOCUS the NHS, as well as to care services in need within our localities, during those initial lockdown weeks. It soon became apparent that we would not be able to maintain the level of activity required to sustain the demand coming in, so we got our heads together again using the power of virtual conferencing, and the next design was born. Injection moulded, polypropylene visors and ear defenders. This method would allow us to increase manufacturing capacity, as well as increasing the quality of the products at the same time. So why polypropylene? l First of all, it is a fully recycled material so the environmental impact is significantly less than the use of other materials. There is zero waste during the manufacturing process, and if ever the product is to be disposed of, it is fully recyclable. A product that has a very minimal environmental impact alongside great other benefits differentiates these products from others on the market. l The material itself is cold soak proof, so disinfecting the product would be a piece of cake for our customers. This gives 100% piece of mind that the entire piece of kit can be cleaned and disinfected easily and quickly. l Dental surgeries can get hot, wearing PPE is a sweaty business and there are lots of chemicals floating around - meaning the kit would need to withstand this usage. Polypropylene is skin and chemical resistant, giving reassurance that no damage will be done to the skin of those wearing the kit, or vice versa. l The visor could be moulded to include the ability to change the acetate on the front of the visor as required, as well as the function to be cleaned. Multiple types of acetate were tested to find the right material for the job! The visor design was intentional too - nothing came by accident! We were very aware that many of the end users would need to wear glasses or safety glasses and of course, the increased measures with needing to wear a face mask would mean that space and ‘face clearance’ would be necessary. Wearing this kit over many hours with all the other PPE meant that comfort is especially important. So we designed the visor to give enough room for all of this kit, without it feeling claustrophobic for the user. Visors also have the ability to host a loupe, so no change of kit would be required in order to wear or remove a loupe whilst with the patient. We had a review sent through by a client recently who was impressed with the kit (he was wearing glasses and a mask) so we know it actually works!
The success of the product was been quickly clear and soon we found ourselves not only getting queries from clients we knew, but we were getting enquiries from further afield and from other industries too. Therefore, we took the decision to set up Visor Lab as a separate business, with a Facebook page and eShop, so anyone wanting to take advantage of the product would be able to. We have even sold products to members of the public - showing not only how affordable and value for money our visors are, but that the piece of mind this offers to users is fantastic. Our colleagues at Yorkshire PPE are also able to supply the visors, meaning they are available to purchase alongside other PPE equipment, streamlining the ordering

process for clients ordering multiple PPE items. Because we know our clients like to be in line with their brand identity, (and it is nice to have fun) we offer a range of colours available to allow alignment with customer branding! We are currently getting our collective brain power together and are working on further enhancements, using CAD technology, to expand functionality. TAKE THE CHALLENGE! Join the Mount Toubkal, Morocco Charity Trek
T
his 8-day trek to the highest peak in North Africa will both challenge and reward you at every turn. On your way to the summit, you’ll learn about Berber life, see some of the most spectacular views on the planet, and test the strength of your calves too. Experience the unforgettable and discover one of Africa’s most authentic hidden gems as you conquer the majestic Mount Toubkal. (And yes, of course, you’ll get the chance to barter with the souks in Marrakech too.) Morocco might sit right in the middle of the biggest desert in the world but this fabulous African country also hosts its fair share of snow as well as sand, at certain times of year. 4,167m above sea level, Toubkal pokes her head out highest above the rest of the High Atlas Mountains. Dotted with diverse terrain, climates and wildlife, she lies at the heart of Morocco’s Toubkal National Park, waiting to give you an experience like no other. But first, Marrakech. You’ll spend the first night of your Moroccan adventure wandering through the maze of market stalls in Marrakech, bantering with souks and sinking your senses into the spices and sights before you. One good night’s sleep later and you’ll find yourself in a different scene altogether, tying up the laces on your trusty walking boots and meeting your mule.
You’ll see some truly incredible views as you hike along river paths, across valleys, past Berber villages and around waterfalls on your journey towards the summit. As the altitude increases, the paths become steeper and snowier but the climb awards the most dramatic feels and all the most important “A”s: awe, achievement and amazing views over the Anti-Atlas mountains. You really will find it hard to believe the Sahara Desert is just a stone’s throw away.
- Don’t go throwing any stones from the top of Toubkal though or they won’t let us back! So whats included? Flights, accommodation, selected meals, transfers, permits, UK and local guides. How much do we have to raise? In order to participate and cover your costs you need to raise a minimum of £1250, £200 of this total will be your deposit to secure your place and must be paid as soon as possible.

SUPPORTING YOUR COLLEAGUES IN GOOD TIMES AND BAD
A
s the situation starts to settle across UK dentistry, conversations are beginning to move on from the ‘C’ topic. While this is necessary and somewhat refreshing, it is important that we continue to provide the support that many of our colleagues may still need. This is particularly important when it comes to their mental health – just because the immediate danger seems to have passed for now, that doesn’t mean that individuals aren’t continuing to battle the effects caused. STRESS A feeling shared by many across the dental profession of late, stress can have a massive impact on day-to-day life. It may not be a psychiatric diagnosis, but it is very closely associated with mental health problems, causing some conditions and making others worse.i Prolonged or frequent stressful life events have long been associated with the development of conditions like depression,ii anxiety, psychosis and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).iii Dentistry is already known to be a highstress profession and dental technicians face daily pressure to meet patient expectations and deliver an efficient service to collaborating dentists. Add to this all the stress of recent events – including disrupted income, job uncertainty, product supply issues and adapting to the so-called ‘new normal’ – and it’s easy to see how building stress could be impacting the mental wellbeing of UK dental technicians. OTHER POTENTIAL CAUSES A huge number of situations can cause the development of mental health issues and conditions. Among a comprehensive list of potential examples, Mind - the UK mental health charity - includes social isolation, debt and bereavement. Given the circumstances around the globe in recent months, these will sadly have affected many more people than normal. It’s important to realise that colleagues may still be recovering from their experiences or grieving for someone they lost, as these could affect their mental wellbeing significantly for some time. HOW TO SPOT WHEN SOMETHING’S UP While it can be difficult to recognise when someone is struggling with their mental health, there are a few warning signs to look out for. These include: iv
20
• Changes in their normal behaviour unnecessary or unexplainable changes • They may be more anxious or irritable than normal • Mood swings • Not enough or too much sleep • Avoiding other people, even their friends • Being withdrawn and/or uncharacteristically pessimistic • Eating much less or more than usual • They might struggle to concentrate on tasks • They might seem less able to cope with their normal workload • Memory problems • Self-harming tendencies or caring very little about their health/safety
getting back to their normal selves. Being positive, exercising, re-establishing routine and talking will help, as will re-connecting with others for friendship, support and inspiration. There are a myriad of virtual groups and clubs dedicated to dental technology to join that offer a sense of community and could help individuals to find their feet again. Looking ahead, the Dental Technology Showcase (DTS) will be a perfect place to finally meet up with friends and colleagues, share experiences and strengthen relationships. It will also offer the opportunity to discover new technologies and ideas, and re-ignite the passion for clinical excellence and patient care that drives all dental professionals.
OFFER SUPPORT Should you notice any of the above in a colleague at work, the best first step is to talk to them. They might just need to get it off their chest or to know that someone is looking out for them. It might be the case that they are overstressed - in which case there may be something you can do to help alleviate the pressures they face at work. In more serious cases of mental health issues, they may require support from a medical or psychiatric healthcare professional. Unless you are genuinely concerned that they are a threat to themselves or other people, this is often a step they need to take themselves as part of their road to recovery.
Ultimately, dentistry is a community, not just a profession. These last few months will have been tough on friends and colleagues, so it’s important that someone’s looking out for them and their mental wellbeing.
For people who are less comfortable having face-to-face conversations with those they might not know too well, or who don’t get anywhere with their initial attempt to talk, a simple text or email to see if a person is OK could work. Beyond this, it might be possible to contact a partner or family member to see if anyone else can better communicate with the person you are concerned about. RE-CONNECT For anyone who is struggling or has struggled with mental health in the last few months, there are some easy ways to help them start

BAR HEADER INTERVIEW
TARGETED CONTROL OF SHADE EFFECTS WITH
VITA AKZENT PLUS CHROMA STAINS
The initial situation with lifeless, metalceramic crowns in the esthetic zone
With DT Urszula Mlynarska, Warsaw, Poland
I
t’s a familiar situation: The restoration’s shade saturation does not match the natural tooth structure during the tryin. In that case, VITA AKZENT Plus CHROMA STAINS (VITA Zahnfabrik, Bad Säckingen, Germany) allow the chroma within a shade group to be increased systematically, helping to achieve the ideal final shade results. The CHROMA STAINS also make it possible to reproduce intermediate shades – as if with a brushstroke – without having to mix two different DENTINE materials. “These stains help me take tooth esthetics to an even higher level,” says dental technician Urszula Mlynarska. In the following interview, she explains the reasons behind her enthusiasm, as well as points to consider when applying stains.
22
IN WHAT CASES DO YOU USE VITA AKZENT PLUS CHROMA STAINS? In general, the CHROMA STAINS allow me to work on a very individual basis and to precisely control the color intensity and shade to meet the expectations of dentists and patients. Being able to precisely control the chroma within a shade group and reproduce even the slightest nuance in shading allows me to reach new levels in restoration production. For restorations with limited space, the stain shades allow me to characterize them internally, helping me to achieve three-dimensional color effects. WHAT WAS THE CHALLENGE IN THIS CASE AND HOW COULD THE NEW STAINS HELP ACHIEVE A SUCCESSFUL RESTORATION? The esthetic expectations were very high in this case. The restorations were supposed to be a bit lighter than the natural teeth. When fabricating the crowns, we wanted to achieve natural light dynamics that matched the appearance of the adjacent teeth.
www.dentaltechnician.org.uk
The brightness was to be retained in the central area, the shade in the cervical area was to be intensified and the chroma of the incisal edge was to be increased. At the same time it was also necessary to reproduce the base tooth shade of the natural teeth. HOW IMPORTANT IS THE PRECISE REPRODUCTION OF CHROMACITY FOR ACHIEVING HARMONIOUS, COLOR INTEGRATION OF THE RESTORATION? Every color is defined by the dimensions of brightness, color saturation and shade. Each tooth shade must be analyzed in the order mentioned, and this hierarchy also needs to be taken into account during the reproduction. The brightness of a tooth is relatively easy to determine. It takes more experience to determine chromacity. Identifying the shade requires an even higher, professional level of experience. VITA AKZENT Plus CHROMA STAINS allow targeted control of the chromacity, helping me to achieve the most individual, lifelike results possible.
BAR INTERVIEW HEADER IN YOUR EXPERIENCE, HOW RELIABLY CAN THE SHADE EFFECT OR CHROMACITY OF RESTORATIONS BE CONTROLLED WITH THE NEW STAINS? VITA stains provide us with a logical approach to reproducing shade effects. For me, they are tools I can use to p recisely reproduce all the nuances of the entire color spectrum of natural tooth structure. CHROMA STAINS allow the chromaticity of a restoration to be controlled easily and precisely, as the change in color is already visible when the paint is applied. WHY ARE VITA AKZENT PLUS CHROMA STAINS THE IDEAL MATERIAL FOR ANY DENTAL TECHNICIAN TO HELP ACHIEVE EXCELLENT AND CONSISTENT RESULTS? The stains allow beginners to achieve the correct shade quickly, easily and predictably. In addition, any experienced ceramist can use them in a more individual and creative way. Because chromacity can be controlled on a very individual level with these stains, which allows for customized characterization and layer protocols. HOW DO YOU RATE THE PROCESSING PROPERTIES OF THE NEW VITA AKZENT PLUS CHROMA STAINS AS COMPARED TO STAINS FROM OTHER MANUFACTURERS? Application is really easy and you can use the stains in a number of different ways, such as for internal and external characterization. The intensity can be controlled precisely, which makes it possible to apply color efficiently on the restoration surface. The stains only increase the chroma and do not alter the light transmission or UV effects of the restoration. The staining and layering materials essentially merge with each other, resulting in a threedimensional appearance while not increasing the wall thickness of the reconstruction. VITA® and other VITA products mentioned are registered trademarks of VITA Zahnfabrik H. Rauter GmbH & Co. KG, Bad Säckingen, Germany.

MARKETPLACE SAVE LABS, BUY BRITISH DTS w DTS is wholeheartedly supporting the DLA’s Save Labs, Buy British campaign and it would encourage you to get involved too. The initiative aims to encourage dental practices to pay their outstanding lab fees in order to help businesses survive the current crisis. The DLA estimates that 75% of its members have outstanding invoices for work completed before the COVID-19 lockdown. Settling these invoices would make a huge difference to many UK laboratories.
The campaign is also about asking practices to support UK dental labs when they come back to business. Building and strengthening relationships within UK dentistry will help to secure the future of the profession as a whole. Get involved to #SaveLabs. Tell your colleagues to subscribe and if they do so we will extend your subscription for 3 months. The only condition is that they have not subscribed to the magazine for more than 12 months. Just ask them to call the Subscriptions Hotline. With four colleagues registered that means your subscription would be extended for a year free of charge. At only £39.95 per year, for UK residents, this must be the cheapest way of keeping up to date. Help your colleagues to keep up to date as well. Ask them to call the subscriptions Hotline on 01202 586 848 now.
