BAR HEADER WELCOME
From the
Editor Matt Everatt F.O.T.A
l
Here we are thundering our way through 2022! I must say, it has felt like a long winter and the promise of warm summer days is long overdue. Just ahead of us is the DTS Show on the 13th and 14th of May, I do hope this event is well attended by Dental Technicians, I would really like to bump into a few of you. Please do come and say hello and introduce yourself if you see me. I will be attending on the Saturday; I am presenting a lecture at 1pm in the O.T.A. Lecture theatre. Surely this has to be the worse timed slot? Who wants to come and listen to a lecture about Snoring and Sleep Apnoea just after lunch on the Saturday? Most of you by then will be either thinking of heading back home to the family, thinking about going to the bar for your first drink of the weekend or probably nursing a sore head from the night before!!! So, please, if you are around come and join me. Don’t let me speak to empty seats. You can even fall asleep as long as you don’t start snoring. We have had a response from the PSA in regards to the GDC and MHRA. A
4 MAY 2022.indd 4
few months ago we published an article sparking a response from the GDC. We suggested that the GDC, MHRA and CQC didn’t have a policy to deal with illegal manufacturers of Custom Made Medical Devices. The current response hasn’t really answered any of our questions, in fact it has raised more. We are in the process of contacting the MHRA and GDC again to see if we can get a finite response on this subject. We plan to update readers as soon as we get a response. I was delighted to receive a ‘Letter To The Editor’ last month. We have published it in this month’s issue. Please do send in more. It is so nice to know that some of the articles spark a response, be that good or bad. I really enjoy reading your letters and feedback and I will always do my best to respond. I will wish you well for the coming month and look forward to meeting some of you at the DTS show, have a great May, see you in June for what I hope will be a tremendous summer ahead. Best Wishes Matt Everatt FOTA

LETTERS
Letters to the
Editor
Lett e the rs to Edit or
From Mr Gavin Bennett I April 2022 lHaving emailed you last year regarding the
lack of technicians, since I've had two of my technicians take early retirement.
I've advertised for 6 months offering a good wage. I wouldn't make a profit on, just to help with the pressure. Despite this I've had absolutely nothing. Many applicants, but no one who can do the job. The nearest I had was a strange chap who'd done a year at Dental college (8 years ago ), dropped out. After speaking to him on phone, he didn't even turn up for the interview! It was interesting reading the article in the March edition of the magazine, about technicians leaving, I'm not in the least surprised, the way many of us were treated, the only surprise is that it’s taken so many years to happen. A lot of these dentists who basically wanted the work at cost, blame you for their mistakes and were arrogant to say the least. I remember sitting down with my staff probably 10 years ago, saying I cannot or will not do the work at a lower price. Without losing money, (I wasn't making much as it was) but still labs did it cheaper. Unsurprising lots of them are gone now. These labs undercutting to try and get contracts, with the "winning",
Response from the Editor Thank you for your letter Gavin. I agree with the sentiment for sure. For many years we have been beholden to providing low cost appliances, competing with each other by allowing Dentists to dictate what price they want to pay. I myself have been discussing with fellow directors and colleagues about 2022 price increases. My opinion on this is that we need to start addressing the issue of technician shortages NOW! We need to address the generally low wages that many technicians are getting paid. We can only do this by providing properly
6 MAY 2022.indd 6
labs often going bankrupt several years later. My workload is massive, 12 hour days and Saturdays and Sunday mornings. This is despite not taking on any new practices for several years. It is funny how some of these ones (dental practices) who left, try crawling back, obviously can't get anyone else to do their work. I won't be! I'm going to keep putting up my prices, any who start moaning or are rude, can go elsewhere. The wages need to dramatically improve to attract fresh blood into the trade. Let's hope
‘costed’ services. In that, we must operate as businesses, not the old school days of ‘providing cheap appliances from my garage because I have cheap overheads.’ We must move on from this, I am not in any way saying Technicians shouldn’t be working from their outbuildings, what I am encouraging Technicians to do is, price your services properly. We are highly skilled registered professionals. Let us showcase our quality and let us not give it away for pennies! We are simply not attracting enough new bodies into the profession to meet the current and future demands. We counted just 4 (maybe 5) training institutions offering Dental Technology Qualifications.
some of these surgeries who went round lab to lab, demanding discounts on work that was low cost in the first place, will get what they thoroughly deserve. It is in our hands now to make this a decent viable career for people to come in to. If we don't and continue with stupid pricing we get what we deserve! Yes, I know all labs are in competition with each other, but I think there's enough work for everybody at present, we all benefit from labs keeping their pricing high, as hopefully this will encourage the general pay to go up.
I am involved in teaching at Sheffield College at the moment. We will be lucky to retain 3 or 4 students in the profession; this is from a cohort of 26 students starting the course. Some have already dropped out to seek other job opportunities that are already paying better, most are using the course as a feeder to get into Dental Hygiene/Therapy. The students feel they will be paid better and will be respected more as a Dental Professional. We cannot let this continue, WE are the only ones who can make this change. Thank you again for your letter Gavin. I do hope this conversation can continue in future editions of the magazine.

LET’S TALK TAX REDUCTION DENTAL TECHNOLOGY STUDENT (Part 3 of 10) By Richard T Lishman I Managing Director of
the 4dentists Group of companies
Embrace any work perks from your company
Richard Lishman, award-winning Founder of The IFA’s – a specialist firm of Independent Financial Advisers that provides guidance and advice for some of the wealthiest individuals in the UK and around the globe, heads this series of editorials for lab technicians.
I
n the last editorial of the series, our character, Bridget Crown, decided to specialise. Now, as she enters into the next phase of her career, it’s time to look at how Bridget can take advantage of ways to mitigate her tax bill and maximise her take home earnings.
Employment status makes all the difference
The available tax-reduction strategies open to Bridget are dependent on her employment status. For the sake of this piece, let’s pretend that, although Bridget is progressing in her career, she is still employed by a laboratory, and therefore is considered employed instead of self-employed. There are multiple ways that someone who is employed can cut down on their tax bill, some of which are fundamental things that any employee should check to ensure that they are being taxed correctly:
Is your tax code correct?
As Bridget has speedily risen through the ranks at the dental laboratory she works at and seen a good salary increase, it’s likely that her tax code may have changed. This is significant as your tax code tells employers exactly how much tax to deduct from your salary and dictates your personal allowance for the year. If Bridget’s tax code is too low, she may be paying too much tax and not receiving the correct personal allowance tax-free. To
check this, Bridget should can update her employment details on the gov.uk website – this will automatically tell her the correct tax code for her salary and circumstances and give her the option to adjust it if necessary.
Pension relief
For the tax year 2021/2022, the pension Annual Allowance before tax is applied is £40,000. As such, Bridget can make the most of the money she is earning and avoid tax implications by investing a proportion of her earnings into her pension pot. Although unlikely to impact Bridget anytime soon, anyone whose threshold income is above £200,000 and whose adjusted income exceeds £240,000 is subject to the Tapered Annual Allowance. Individuals on this salary will have less of an annual allowance at their disposal, so this pathway would become less beneficial if Bridget were to ever enter this salary level.
Use an ISA to save more
Another option is to make full use of your ISA annual allowance, which is £20,000 for 2021/2022. With the added benefit of no Income Tax on the interest or dividends and all profits from ISA investments are exempt from Capital Gains Tax, this is a great way to legally generate some tax-free income. Bridget could even split this £20,000 yearly allowance across multiple ISA accounts if beneficial.
In this day and age, it’s becoming more and more common for workplaces, including dental laboratories, to offer their staff certain perks. However, these may come with Benefit in Kind taxes attached. For example, if there’s a company car on offer, Bridget may have to pay extra tax to make use of this benefit. However, there are ways to ensure this figure is lower- if the vehicle is electric, for instance, this is taxed significantly less. If Bridget should ever have any time working from home, she may be able to take advantage of tax relief on certain household costs and equipment - there are plenty of ways that Bridget could slightly lower her tax bill depending on the unique circumstance and the perks on offer.
Seek professional advice
Tax is a complex and multi-layered part of our lives, and therefore it can be difficult to know what tax breaks and other methods to lower your tax are applicable to you. Bridget could only be able to take advantage of a couple of these measures, depending on her circumstances. On the other hand, she may be in the fortunate position to follow all of the potential avenues in this article – it really depends on the circumstances surrounding her workplace. One way to ensure that you receive the best advice is to seek guidance from Independent Financial Advisers. This way, regardless of your individual circumstances, you can receive guidance that is directly tailored to you and be able to know what ways to mitigate your tax bill are open to you. TECHNICIANS INSIGHT EVENTS
A conference you’d be mad to miss ASSOCIATION OF DENTAL IMPLANTOLOGY
ADI TEAM CONGRESS 2022 By Ashley Byrne I Byrnes Dental Laboratory and Editorial Board Member

hen it comes to education, dental technicians often get forgotten. I’ve seen many large organisations ditch their technicians’ days through cost, lack of attendees, and with no-one prepared to head up a technician’s programme (especially when it’s voluntary). The ADI however, is different, and offers one of the best CPD days there is for dental technicians. On Saturday 28th May in Manchester, they have a line up that includes some of the most invigorating and inspiring of technical speakers that the UK and beyond has to offer. The speakers are chosen because they are open, honest, and will share ideas that we can use in our labs on Monday morning. We have all been to those conferences with stunning ceramics and unachievable results that, whilst awe-inspiring, we actually learn nothing from. These speakers are not that type - they all run or work in labs that are a commercial business, and think like you and I. This conference is called The Great Debate and each speaker is offering a lecture which debates a topic. The day is an incredible mix of speakers and the ADI have ensured there is a breadth of topics for lab owners, lab technicians, dentures, crown and bridge, and implants. It’s rare to see such a diverse programme on offer. We have a duo talking about the highly relevant topic of Digital v Analog Dentures Version 2.0. Davide Accetto and Chris Powell work together on dentures and it’s set to be quite the debate as they discuss the pros and cons of both analog and digital dentures in this second wave of technology. After what will be a fabulous lunch of great food and discussions with like minded technicians, we head back for the afternoon session. Many of you will know the highly talented Stephen Lusty, who is openly sharing his techniques on ‘Advanced Zirconia Methods’, which is a key discussion for any crown and bridge lab these days. As we all push for the ultimate zirconia restoration, Stephen is talking about what works for him and sharing his in-depth knowledge and experience on this vital topic.
10 MAY 2022.indd 10
3D Printing v Traditional Processes is also a topic that all types of labs are discussing. This fascinating lecture is from Steve Campbell, who has multiple brands of printers and is always looking to better what he does through technology but sometimes those tasks are challenging. Steve’s open and honest reflection comes from both good and bad experiences with printers, and he’s happy to share those with you. A priceless lecture in what is a minefield of printers, materials, software and techniques. Speaking of software, this lines us up to our next speaker - James Cox - who is a CAD legend of the UK market and he is discussing Using Digital Software to Extreme Levels in a Lab - Is Digital Better for Weird and Wonderful Cases. We know CAD software is great for full contour posteriors and copings, but what about when it gets weird and wonderful? James is sharing his advanced knowledge and skills, and showing what can be down with lab CAD software and just how helpful it can be in our increasingly busy labs where challenging cases certainly seem to be on the rise.
With all lecture days someone has to take the final slot and this is where you need someone who doesn’t hold back and isn’t afraid to challenge the norm at all levels. Phil Reddington is one of the most well-known technicians in the UK and his lecture Digital Dentistry - No Compromises, No Excuses questions everything digital. His hard-hitting approach comes from running a high-end digital lab and Phil isn’t afraid to talk about his failures, which of course lead to incredible successes. It’s a fabulous way to finish a great day of education. Of course, it doesn’t stop there! There is a fantastic party in the evening and I’ve no doubt that post lectures, us techs will all find a pub and discuss the incredible debate we have all just witnessed. This is a real once-in-alifetime line up, and as the lab world changes so fast, you can’t afford to miss these speakers and all at a remarkably value-for-money price. DENTAL TECHNOLOGY
DIGITAL EFFICIENCY IN CROWN AND BRIDGE
Henry Schein Laboratory Manager, Hamad Tariq, considers the many advantages that digital technology brings to crown and bridge labs. 12 MAY 2022.indd 12

DENTAL TECHNOLOGY
T
he CAD/CAM digital workflow is now a well-recognised process in the production of fixed restorations such as crowns and bridges. While there is no doubt that labs can continue to manufacture all types of prostheses very successfully using traditional methods, intraoral scanners are becoming increasingly common in dental surgeries, and digital impressions in particular are set to bring about a fundamental change in dentistry in the coming years. Digital impressions and the use of high-tech intraoral scanners are increasingly popular because they can now deliver the accuracy required for impression taking. They also save time and provide a safer, more comfortable patient experience. Today’s scanners capture an extremely precise intraoral image of a patient’s dentition and gingival tissue, which can be used to generate 3D digital models used in a wide range of orthodontic and restorative treatments. A digital workflow brings clear advantages for labs. It improves communication between clinician and technician, which not only speeds up the lab process but is invaluable for treatment planning particularly in complex cases. Using CAD software, a digital scan can be transferred to a digitally-enabled lab just minutes after the impression has been taken, regardless of geographical location, speeding up a process that traditionally would have taken at least 24 hours. The technician can immediately check the scan data and identify any potential issues, that can usually be dealt with before the patient has even left the surgery. The increased accuracy of intraoral scanners, means that technicians can be more precise than ever with their designs. This results in better fitting restorations and minimises the need for remakes, while faster and more effective communication helps the whole dental team provide better solutions for patients.
THE MOVE TO LAB SCANNERS
Adding or expanding digital technology into a crown and bridge workflow is reliant on choosing the right equipment and then building processes which fit the laboratory’s specific workflow and clientele. For those labs that still accept physical impressions, the latest lab scanners can accommodate scans for all indications, whilst design software offers outstanding accuracy and has a clear user interface and intuitive design capabilities. The latest software is open and flexible and enables technicians to use the scanners, milling units and 3D printers from a range of manufacturers. CAD/CAM software offers the technician a wide array of features to enable them to design and fabricate crowns and bridges within an efficient and versatile workflow. Design files
can be shared instantly with the clinician to obtain feedback, allowing all members of the dental team to collaborate effectively and efficiently to achieve outstanding results.
IMPROVED MATERIAL CHOICES
The latest lab technology also gives technicians flexibility in their material choices, delivering durable, lifelike crown and bridge restorations with consistency and predictability. From zirconia and lithium disilicate to ceramics and porcelain, the materials now available have specific advantages over more conventional production methods and ensure there is no compromise between strength and aesthetics. Monolithic zirconia CAD/CAM designed restorations can be stained, glazed and/ or highly polished providing an extremely strong aesthetic restorative solution. Zirconia crowns and bridges are suitable for single units anywhere in the mouth and can be used for full arch bridges including cantilever. The design and milling processes of a full contour zirconia crown create a much shorter procedure, which is less labour intensive and therefore a more profitable process overall for the business.
www.dentaltechnician.org.uk MAY 2022.indd 13
3D PRINTING
While CAD/CAM milling allows the production of the highest quality restorations in short turnaround times, the fine detail now achievable with 3D printers make this a logical next step. The latest 3D printers are compatible with all leading intraoral scanners using powerful software to design and print a wide range of dental applications including trays, models, surgical guides, orthodontic splints as well as crown and bridge with enhanced speed, precision and at lower cost.
SOURCE THE BEST PROVIDER
Any lab, regardless of size should be seriously considering how to integrate digital processes. Scanning is an ideal starting point leaving the manufacturing procedures to be done by a third party, either by a commercial digital supplier or another digitally enabled lab with a compatible system. When moving to a digital workflow it is essential to find a system that suits the lab, one in which training and customer support is readily available, and in which the provider understands what best suits the lab’s specific needs.
u

DENTAL TECHNOLOGY
Digital lab technology is not a onesize-fits-all solution and new software and upgraded hardware is constantly advancing, so purchasing a system that is future proofed is an important consideration. The digital workflow is a combination of solutions and options that work together in countless configurations. The key is identifying the components to truly enhance laboratory productivity. Henry Schein’s comprehensive portfolio of digital options means that a workflow can be customised or tailored to a laboratory’s specific needs. Our digital specialists are here to help technicians and lab owners understand the suitability of current digital systems and introduce them to the latest materials and techniques. As technological advancements continue, many crown and bridge labs are experiencing for themselves the improvement in accuracy and efficiency that digital equipment and software can bring. Not to mention the benefits of instant communication and a
cleaner working environment, as workflows are streamlined and many analogue processes are replaced with cleaner, more environmentally friendly alternatives. There’s never been a better time for labs to invest. Henry Schein is proud to be headline sponsor of the Digital Dentistry Acceleration Forum - a space for lab owners and clinicians
to come together with the leaders of tech to collaborate and discuss how we make the most of the digital opportunities. Come and see a range of fascinating lab speakers, including Doug Watt, who will be speaking on 3D Printing: From the Lab to the Mouth on Stand J20 at The British Dental Conference & Dentistry Show, 13 - 14 May 2022, at the NEC Birmingham.

DIGITAL TECHNOLOGY
Blender4Dental, the story continues… By Andrew Wheeler I Precision Ceramics
M
uch has happened since the last article I wrote on the ‘new kid on the block’, And as we have come to expect nothing in digital dentistry stays still for very long. So where are we now with this new progressive software that has gained so much traction in the profession? The biggest leap forward for this software has been the launch of the Crown and Bridge module, completing the suite that started with the Model module. As per the other parts of Blender4Dental the module, once purchased, is free of any locked in contracts, no yearly charges, and free updates. It covers all aspects of crown and bridge work that you would expect, the only limit is one’s own knowledge. A helpful addition is the weekly zoom meeting that Michael and Wolf, the architects of B4D, hold. They explore many areas of the software that increase the user experience in a clear and easy to understand way. This alongside a fantastic online community, accredited instructors and video tutorials cover all you need to get designing. Another interesting development which has been launched is the VertXsplit model system. This allows users to purchase a base and create a printed split model that locates it, much the same as a conventional model tray system. This highlights the beauty of Blender4Dental, using the latest software but retaining the tried and tested methods, designed by technicians for technicians. The development of the software continues with more implant companies allowing their libraries to be used, expanding the variety available to users. The open-source theme runs alongside the software with users able to create their own tooth libraries and integrate them with the software, utilizing clear and easy to understand video tutorials. For many years technicians have developed their own workflow and technical abilities to meet their clients demands, and in an interesting way this software allows users to maintain that individual artistic side. Yes, there is a learning curve and that might put some off, it is tempting to compare it to
18 MAY 2022.indd 18
other popular CAD programs, but that limits the scope of the software in my opinion. It should be looked upon as a rethink of how we manufacture appliances in the digital world, allowing us to still express ourselves through our work, something we have been doing for decades. Once the basics have been mastered, the knowledge of how CAD programs operate become understandable, which in turn gives the power into the hands of the technician. It is understandable that many technicians are not aware how their CAD software operates as the user interface hides most of the workings, with B4D you get to delve into a world of vertices, surfaces, and edges. You get to inhabit the fascinating world of 3d design, moving at will between various stages and not constrained to a pre-set workflow. Understanding why things go wrong and know how to fix them. It would be remiss of me not to mention an important draw and that is the cost of this software. Blender for Dental is low cost, but just as powerful, it allows smaller laboratories to make the move into digital dentistry without
the large financial outlay. Leaving behind wax knifes and plaster models dental professionals can purchase the software themselves and learn how to become proficient in computer aided design, placing themselves in a very valuable position as the industry changes. As more dental laboratories convert to digital it is hard to stand apart from the crowd. Blender4Dental can certainly help retain the personality we put into our work, as well as meet the challenges the industry is facing. You could say I am a fan of this software, understanding the digital design process in depth has allowed me to offer services that previously were not a consideration in my laboratory. Being able to guide people through the steps of this software has been a real privilege, and I look forward to seeing what the future holds. EXECUTIVE LEADERSHIP SERIES
Be a Futuristic
LEADER By Nicki Rowland
20 MAY 2022.indd 20
www.dentaltechnician.org.uk 05/05/2022 16:47
INSIGHT
In last month’s edition, Nicki Rowland, Director of Practices Made Perfect and co-owner of The Exceptional Leadership Academy, discussed the ‘Art of Listening’ and its importance in leading your team to success. In this article, she explores being a futuristic leader and why giving your team a common focus keeps your laboratory ahead of your competition. FUTURISTS THINK STRATEGICALLY
All leaders need to take time to centre themselves, look to the future and plan ahead. Assess the marketplace of the future, your clients’ desires, your competitors’ activity and the wider economy. In recent times, well-known companies such as Comet and Blockbusters, have failed to anticipate change and ‘pivot’ when required. Their demise can be partly attributed to the fact that they did not ‘flex and bend’. Covid-19 has put even more pressure on labs. The need to be agile and think strategically is paramount. Whether your Laboratory is large or small, we all need to produce results. Objectives and goals need to be met irrespective of the leadership role you hold. Achieving success is a journey and it is vital to take your team on that journey with you to achieve results. Imagine any great football manager. How do they ensure that their team walks away with the trophy? Well, they are on a mission to win and have a carefully planned strategy to make sure that they are the winners. In the same way, your need to have a written ‘purpose’ for the business, a mission statement and SMART business objectives to focus team members’ minds on the bigger picture. A collaborative, cohesive approach within your team is essential to underpinning success and is a concrete foundation on which to take your business from A to B.
FUTURISTS ASK QUESTIONS
A leader asks questions even when they think they know the answers. Channels of communication can be unlocked and discussions facilitates by using ‘open’ questions. Open questions start with ‘what’, ‘why’ ‘who’ ‘how’ or ‘when’. They could be used to ask ‘What do you feel you have done particularly well recently?’, ‘Why is change such a hurdle to you?’, ‘Who would you recommend for the job?’, ‘How do we plan for the future?’ and ‘When would be the best time for us to get our heads together?’ and so on. Questions are also a great chance to challenge your people to
take a renewed look at a problem and assist them in thinking about the results they strive to achieve. Trust is the basis for a thriving, productive culture in your business. With trust, you can ask open questions freely, instigate ‘positive conflict’, generate commitment and hold people to account in your business. Without trust, progress slows, simple processes become disputed and decision-making is handled with caution. I have learned from experience that trust is fostered from finding courage. Sometimes, as leaders, we feel that we need to be hardy, totally resilient and ‘The Oracle’ in the workplace. Yes, your team
www.dentaltechnician.org.uk MAY 2022.indd 21
needs a strong and resourceful leader but they also need to feel your vulnerability. As I talked about previously, openly discussing your susceptibilities can take guts but it allows others to recognise that you are human too. Digging deep and having open and honest conversations initiates sharing of experiences and following through on tasks.
FUTURISTS EMBRACE CHANGE
A sense of urgency is crucial for those of us who are driving change in ourbusinesses. John Kotter is the founder of Kotter International and a professor at Harvard Business School. His books include Leading Change, in which he outlines an 8-stage
u

INSIGHT
model of change. The first step of Kotter's model of change is establishing a sense of urgency. Kotter argues that “Establishing a sense of urgency is needed in the change process and helps managers of companies and leaders of change to fight against complacency”. When team members exhibit complacency, it is often because they are content with the status quo. When employees are complacent, questions such as ‘Why do we have to change anything when the old way still works?' or 'Why make a change when we do not know if it will work or not?' are commonplace. Urgency is the polar opposite of complacency. It helps teams to recognise why change is needed. Always sell the benefits of change to your team to gain their ‘buy-in’. I would suggest comparing your ‘old world’ with your ‘new world’ on a flip chart and then it soon becomes evident that the difference is not as significant as once thought.
FUTURISTS LOOK AT THE BIGGER PICTURE
Jack Welch was an American business executive who said “Good business leaders create a vision, articulate a vision, passionately own a vision and relentlessly drive it to completion”. He talks about visionary leadership being fostered by inspiring and motivating people to pursue a long term goal. For me it is also about looking to the future and being ‘a Futurist’. I would say that there are 7 key qualities of a being futuristic leader:-
1 Focused Determined and tenacious. They keep their attitude above the line and their eyes on the horizon.
for conduct and performance in your practice. If your standards or attitude slips, your people will let theirs slip too. If you are open and honest, your team will follow suit. Enjoy your workplace and have fun and your team will enjoy working with you. Steve Jobs says “Be a yardstick of quality. Some people are not used to an environment where excellence is expected”. So, ask yourself ‘What kind of yardstick am I?’ Make your expectations of quality clear, live those expectations, have a zest for life and become a yardstick worth being measured against. Be a leader who gets a complete buzz from seeing their team flourish and grow.
2 Imaginative Visualising your future business and then carving out a path to achieve the ‘bigger picture’. 3 Innovative Introducing new ideas, projects and initiatives. It is all about thinking ‘outside the box’. 4 Strategic thinker The ability to plan ahead, set goals and inspire your team to achieve them. 5 Intelligent risk taker Being prepared to take a ‘calculated risk’ for the greater good of your team and the business.
As American author, Norman Vincent Peale, once said “If you have zest and enthusiasm, you attract zest and enthusiasm. Life does give back in kind.”
6 Skilled communicator Translating your future vision to conjure up a tangible picture of what is achievable in the mind of each team member.

DCP Dental Networks I
mportant work is currently underway in the Midlands region to build a DCP Network that is mainly aimed at getting more multi dental professional engagement. The network will improve communication and collaboration between the entire dental team and create a safe environment for members to discuss concerns. We would like to have a DCP representative in each region who attends the LDN meetings as well as DCP representation at the various MCN speciality meetings. This will facilitate a supportive and collaborative working environment to improve team links by giving DCPs a voice and role in NHS dental leadership. One of the aims of the DCP Network is to raise awareness of the roles of the LDN, MCN and LDC.
LDN LOCAL DENTAL NETWORK
The LDN is a network of key professionals involved in dentistry, the main LDN group meets quarterly. The LDN supports NHSE&I to deliver evidence based, clinically led commissioning. The LDN is empowered to solve problems and deliver strategy by providing multidisciplinary sustainable leadership for the NHS. The LDN influences decisions and what happens in Dentistry. This is achieved by attending a variety of meetings with a variety of stakeholders, highlighting difficulties faced within dentistry and providing possible solutions or opportunities to improve services. Currently, most of the agenda items are related to the pandemic, including restoration and recovery of dental services. Other issues include managing access in dentistry, procuring additional services, and engaging with the new Integrate Care Systems. The LDN focuses on improving all aspects pertaining to NHS dentistry both locally and nationally. Priorities can change over time; however, the main priority is improving access for patients.
MCN MANAGED CLINICAL NETWORK The MCN helps to clinically guide NHSE&I in the delivery of various speciality dental services in the region. The MCN links all clinicians from Primary, Salaried, Secondary and Tertiary care. The MCN encourages co-ordinated working
24 MAY 2022.indd 24
across organisational boundaries, this ensures equitable provision of high quality, evidence based, clinically effective services. There are two types of meetings, core, and network. Core is a concentrated group of performers and providers who are specifically interested in the development of the service. These meetings are largely about issues with delivery of the service and two-way feedback from NHSE. Network meetings provide an update for other performers and providers. They also include an educational element. The goals of these meetings are to streamline services and ensure that they are being used appropriately and delivering on target guidelines based on waiting times and costs. There are various MCN specialities, and the chairs for each feed clinical expertise into the LDN.
LDC LOCAL DENTAL COMMITTEE
A Local Dental Committee is a statutory body representing all primary care general dental practitioners in their area. There may also have secondary care and community representatives. The LDC offers advice, support, and guidance, whilst distributing relevant information and guidance from NHSE&I. As the local representative committee for dental practitioners, the LDC has the statutory right to be consulted by the relevant commissioners on issues relating to the dental profession particularly on the provision of dental services. The LDC is an independent body paid for by primary
care dentists themselves via a levy collected from dentists in the area. LDC meetings are attended by elected members of the committee. An LDC may only represent those dentists who are members or who are on an 'NHS Performers List' list at the locality covered by the LDC. Other professionals can attend as co-opted members. LDC committee members attend a variety of meetings, including ones with NHS commissioners, as well as various managed clinical networks. The main purpose of the LDC is essentially to listen to and act on the concerns of the profession locally. The LDC chairs represent local dentists at MCN and LDN meetings. The DCP Network will work collaboratively with the Heath Education England study groups and will facilitate much needed DCP Peer Review Groups. We are currently working with all Dental Professional Organisations, College of General Dentistry and many other key stakeholders to develop the network. Providing a link between DCPs, LDNs and MCNs is a step in the right direction in removing barriers to ensure diversity and inclusion are valued by ensuring that everyone can contribute. DCPs are vital and valued members of the dental team, having a direct link with dental leadership networks is crucial to the development and progression of the profession especially as DCPS will be taking on more clinical responsibilities in future with the Advancing Dental Care Review and Dental Education Reform Programme.

BUSINESS
HOW TO ENSURE YOU GET PAID EVERY TIME, ON TIME, BY EVERY CUSTOMER With Gary Ainley
R
unning any business is full of challenges and hurdles, ultimately for a worthy reward - notably making money, generating a profit, remaining solvent. But even the most seasoned business owner will have noticed that getting paid is not always easy and it is becoming increasingly difficult, even in the resilient dental laboratories industry. We hear about companies going bust all the time these days, though it has always been rare to hear of dentists suffering this fate. With demand for dental treatment largely unaffected by the economic climate - people still need their teeth fixing - it is known as a comparably resilient sector. After two years of disruption, thanks to coronavirus, dental practices are open again and it’s business as usual. But the pandemic has taken its toll; cashflow is tight and the prospect of going into administration is now being faced by a number of dental practices. This can have huge consequences for creditors. Once a customer files a notice of intent to appoint administrators, you’ve lost your chance to make sure you get paid. But can you heed the warning signs before it's too late? Customers who always paid on time, every time, start to push payment dates to the max. So you allow them to extend payment dates, and you accept another order from them, even though they still owe you for the previous one. You don’t want to chase them for money - it would be uncomfortable for both of you. But running a successful business means that you sometimes have to get comfortable
28 MAY 2022.indd 28
with the uncomfortable. When you don’t get paid, it affects your ability to run your business and it can have dire consequences. If you suspect that a customer is heading towards problems, acting quickly and calling in the experts will give you a much better chance of getting paid. Gary Ainley, director of debt collection agency Expert Collections, has helped to recoup thousands of pounds for clients in the weeks leading up to administrators being appointed, sometimes even right up to the day before it actually happens. “Late with payments in the dentistry industry is nothing new, but we’re getting a lot more instances recently” he revealed. “Not being paid causes you stress and problems with your own cashflow and can cripple your business, so being ahead of the game is important.” Gary’s company was recently instructed by a dental laboratory that had unpaid invoices totalling around £90,000 owed by a local dental practice. These invoices were approaching a year overdue and the knockon effect was that his client was having issues paying their own suppliers. This was further compounded, however, because his client had an arrangement with a finance company and the invoices had already been removed from their credit facility, so they were incurring penalty charges from the finance provider. Gary’s team gathered as much information as possible relating to the history of the matter, as well as copies of the contract, invoices and other supporting documentation.
www.dentaltechnician.org.uk www.dentaltechnician.org.uk 05/05/2022 16:47
BUSINESS
On receipt of the demand letter, the debtor contacted them to confirm that the unpaid invoices were in dispute for a number of reasons ranging from pricing and quality issues to questions around their correct legal entity. “A key part of getting these issues resolved was the fact that our client had quite a strong set of terms and conditions that had been agreed by the dental practice at the start of the relationship. This helped us to dismiss the claims that were being made by the debtor, which appear to have been raised simply to delay payment.” Gary disclosed. He continued “Correctly formed Terms & Conditions can mean the difference between getting paid or not. Many businesses don’t have any in place and, even if they do, they often offer inadequate protection.” The outcome in this particular case was that the payment the dental laboratory was expecting was paid in full and the cost of collection was billed to the debtor using late payment legislation.
“Analysing the company owing money helps us decide on a strategy for the best way to proceed on an individual basis” said Gary. “For example, a business may have a recent track record of only making payment at the point of legal action, so we’ll treat this differently and act accordingly. It’s not about going in heavy handed, it’s about gathering the facts and getting the best and quickest solution for our client.” Despite achieving the desired outcome in this case, prevention is always better than cure and there are ways to avoid having to call in the services of a debt collection agency. Making sure you get paid is vital, so taking a few preventive measures will help to avoid those uncomfortable situations and ensure you get paid every time, on time, by every customer.
• DO credit check all new customers before you agree to supply to them. Companies in financial difficulties will often try to find new suppliers so they can continue to trade in the hope that they can turn their situation around, but they’re unlikely to volunteer this information. • DO make sure you get your customer to sign a contract and that you have adequate and legally binding Terms & Conditions (T&Cs) drawn up by a solicitor, detailing your payment terms and credit control procedure. Your T&Cs will ensure you have something concrete to fall back on should a customer forfeit their part of the contract.
The DO’S and DON’TS of making sure you get paid:
• DO ask your customer to give you a signed authorisation for each new order or job you do for them, and obtain proof of delivery if you are sending goods to them. It might sound obvious, but that extra step in your sales process could be vital if your customer doesn’t pay you.
• DO make sure you understand the legal entity of a new customer’s business and who within the business is responsible for making payments to you. Should an invoice remain unpaid, the legal entity (e.g. a sole trader, a limited company or a partnership) will make a difference to how the debt can be recovered or if it is even worth attempting to recover it.
• DO take action as soon as a debt becomes overdue. Always follow your credit control procedure. Start with a gentle, polite reminder (they might genuinely have overlooked payment), but follow it through. It may be possible to agree an acceptable payment plan, but put this in writing and get the customer to sign it. • DON’T continue to supply a customer who is already overdue. You cannot be sure of their financial situation - it may have changed since your initial credit check. If a customer has outstanding invoices, put them on ‘stop’. As a fellow business owner, they should understand and respect your position. If they do settle the outstanding amount, keep a close eye on them - it may have been a one-off or it may be a symptom of longer-term financial difficulty.
And if you do find yourself in the unfortunate position of not being paid: • DO employ the services of a reputable debt collection company as soon as a payment is not made by the agreed date. It is often those who chase the debts the earliest that will receive full payment. The earlier a debt is sent for recovery, the more chance there is it will be paid. HEALTH & WELLBEING
WHAT HAPPENS WHEN THE WORST HAPPENS? By Ashley Byrne (on behalf of Mr Csongi)
I
am writing this article on behalf of Csongor (aka ‘Mr Csongi’, as we affectionately know him), who has worked in my lab for many years as one of our key ceramists. Our editor, Matt, asked Mr Csongi to write something but he wasn’t confident, so I offered because I believe it’s important this story is told. In 2021, as we started to return to a normal post-pandemic world, most of the team were back after being furloughed for several months, and there was an excitement to be back at work. Everyone was buzzing to be back but several of the team noticed that Mr Csongi was not quite himself. A lot of people had experienced change from the pandemic and this is how we initially explained the behaviour. It was several months before we noticed that Mr Csongi, a man who would stop for a leisurely breakfast, a nice lunch, and often an afternoon snack, was losing weight and losing weight fast. Something wasn’t adding up and between June and July, we started to get worried. Several of the team noticed the weight loss and lack of food intake and concerns were subsequently raised. His normal diet of breads, cheese and ham was now soups and baby food. Mr Csongi was struggling with most foods, and this wasn’t the man we knew. It wasn’t long before the doctors pushed for more tests and then the news that we all dreaded was confirmed - Mr Csongi had Type B-Cell Lymphoma. It was an enormous blow for him and everyone at the lab. Team Byrnes is like a family and when one of the family is ill, especially a long-standing member of that family, it hurt everyone. We’d only just come out the pandemic and then this hit us, and what was more concerning was Mr Csongi was only 46 at diagnosis. Mr Csongi lived a healthy life, was fit and well, an active musician, and a comedian at work every day. How could this person get so ill so fast?

HEALTH & WELLBEING
It wasn’t long before Mr Csongi was about to start his treatment when he fell ill at home and collapsed. An ambulance was sent, and Mr Csongi then wouldn’t leave hospital for seven weeks solid. It was during this time that we as team had to pull together to support him through this treatment. The company assured he was looked after financially during treatment so that worry was gone, but we knew personal strength was key and the team rose to that challenge. At Byrne’s we run a WhatsApp group which is social, so the team would randomly message him day and night and check in. It was vital that he was looked after and the team messages meant the world to him, especially when he was in hospital. The team put together a well-being pack of a luxury robe, eye masks, moisturisers, and all things to make his time in hospital that little bit more comfortable. That meant everything to Mr Csongi, and it really shows the importance of support during traumatic treatments like this. When Mr Csongi left hospital, we all knew he still had many months of recovery ahead of him, and still the team messaged and offered support. One day, over 35 cookies arrived all hand baked and personally named and decorated from Mr Csongi as a thanks for the support. He hand-delivered them, the first

lose that muscle memory that made him the amazing ceramist he had worked so hard to become. Mr Csongi was aware of this and in his spare time he’d draw teeth and do his best to copy the shape and morphology. He would share these on our WhatsApp group and that connection between us all helped to lift everyone’s spirits. Last month, Mr Csongi started his return to work on a part time basis, working closely with us set the time scales. Slowly, he’s working his way back to full time but in a matter of weeks he completed this case that is shown. As the lab owner, I couldn’t believe that someone off for that length of time could produce work like this so quickly. It’s a testament to his drive to get better and continue to be the person that he is.
Mr Csongi was off for seven months in total, and it was his biggest fear that he’d
Mr Csongi is still in treatment but it’s looking very good. He’s positive, smiling, and sharing his story has been a wakeup call to us all. The importance of looking after yourself is one thing but what we all learnt as a team is the importance of support - a working team is more than just colleagues - it’s community spirit and it is essential in this crazy busy world that we don’t forget that. Helping each other is more powerful than most of us ever give credit to.

time we’d seen him in months. He was thin and his hair was just starting to grow back but he was smiling, and we knew the real Mr Csongi was on the road to recovery.

DTS REVIEW 2022
Improving mental health for your professional and personal wellbeing
l
Sarah Davies-Hibbert will be speaking as part of the OTA Seminars at the Dental Technology Showcase (DTS) 2022. Her session will be supported by the OTA and is entitled “Mental health wellness in dentistry – Early intervention & safe signposting”.
“There is a new mental health framework now available that can be integrated into all businesses whether they work in private or NHS dentistry. I hope to share knowledge around this new framework and help delegates introduce it within their own workplace.
She says: “Mental health is always essential and even more so in the dental profession. Due to a lack of support in this area in the past, I feel it is essential to provide extra knowledge and supportive resources to all the dental team.
“If delegates take one thing away from my session, it will be that everyone’s mental health should be at the forefront of our day-today workings and schedules, so it is properly acknowledged and
understood. It is also critical to ensure that safeguarding support and the appropriate resources are easily accessible. “I would encourage delegates to attend my session because mental health is not just for your professional knowledge but for your personal information also. Appreciating this can help you to better understand your personal mental health needs, the needs of your staff, colleagues and patients.”
Helping technicians help dentists with scans
l
David Claridge is known in the dental profession for his expertise in digital dentistry and for supporting both dental technicians and dentists in their utilisation of the latest technologies. He will be sharing his wealth of knowledge at the Dental Technology Showcase (DTS) 2022, speaking to dental technicians about “How to triage your customers’ intraoral scans”. He says: “I passionately believe that dental technicians, if they receive an ‘inferior’ intraoral scan, should be able to help their clients improve their technique for the future. Around 95% of scans I review on a weekly basis are perfect, but when they’re not, a
technician should be able to advise the dentist about how to avoid the same issues next time. For example, maybe they would benefit from better moisture control or from using a locking tool. “I want to support technicians by giving them tips and tricks to help their customers improve their scans, creating a smoother workflow going forward. Delegates will leave armed with greater knowledge of the procedure and with confidence to enhance their working relationships and communication with the dentists they collaborate with. If anyone needs more specific help after the session, I’d also be more than happy to help!”

DTS 2022
A programme l
for all
The Dental Technology Showcase (DTS) 2022 will be held on Friday 13th and Saturday 14th May, Birmingham NEC, co-located with British Dental Conference & Dentistry Show. It’s completely free for dental technology professionals!
The programme for DTS 2022 will offer an exciting assortment of technical expertise, business intelligence and market insights. There will be something for every member of the lab team, with a combination of lectures, interactive sessions, hands-on workshops and product demonstrations to educate, entertain and delight. In the DTS Lecture Theatre, delegates have the opportunity to broaden their knowledge in a range of topics from milling to product development and how to achieve aesthetics by introducing an intraoral scanner into the workflow with clients. Also in the DTS Lecture Theatre will be Dr Gulshan Murgai, presenting a session entitled “Vita – chairside and lab digital dentistry solutions”. During his lecture, he will review the development of CAD/CAM technologies and the benefits available to today’s dental team, about which he says: “Digital dentistry has been around for 30 years and yet the uptake in the UK is only around 10%. Patients are missing out and UK dental professionals are getting left behind by the rest of the world who have adopted this technology in much higher numbers. “During my session, the knowledge I impart will be from my day-to-day practice and so it will be the kind of data that can be acted upon by all colleagues if they choose to. I hope to
34 MAY 2022.indd 34
help delegates make the decision as to whether they should be utilising more digital dentistry. My session will open delegates’ minds to digital dentistry both at lab and clinical levels.” Commenting on why he would recommend DTS and the co-located British Dental Conference and Dentistry Show (BDCDS), Gulshan adds: “It’s great that the event is free to attend. There will be a great mix of clinical and technical colleagues in attendance and so I would encourage dentists to come along with their technicians for the best experience.”
Also speaking in the DTS Lecture Theatre will be Dr Grzegorz Wasiluk, discussing “How to plan predictable and safe implant reconstructions, based on CAD/CAM technology”. He comments: “The main topics I will focus on are the potential complications that can occur with implant-retained prosthetics. I will explore the available pathways to help professionals avoid these problems, discussing the benefits of customfabricated implant components. The session will look at how to determine the right treatment plan that will minimise the risks of complications due to patient habits or implant positioning. It will also cover new types of removable solutions that provide a great alternative to fixed implant bridges, as well as the advantages of individualised implant and prosthetic components for a wide range of cases. “As more and more dental implants have been placed every year, we have seen a corresponding increase in the number of complications experienced. It is important that dental professionals are aware of the different treatment options that are available for both fixed and removable implant reconstructions in order to provide each patient with
the best treatment that will minimise possible complications. Some of the alternatives to conventional treatment protocols may help to overcome difficulties with implant positioning, as well as mechanical and biological issues. In this way, cutting-edge processes with CAD/ CAM technologies could redefine the way the dental team approach cases of implant rehabilitation.” Alongside the DTS Lecture Theatre and NEW for 2022 will be the Digital Dentistry Acceleration Forum. This will be an ideal place for delegates to seek out the latest information, news and developments in the digital dental arena. Leading providers and product developers in the field will lead discussions and invite experts from across the industry to share their insights and achievements to date to create a very interesting exchange. In addition, the CDT Conference and OTA Seminars will be returning for another year, delivering content designed specifically for clinical dental technicians and orthodontic technicians looking to advance their skills. Some of the amazing feedback received from DTS delegates in previous years includes: “Lots of interesting lectures and speakers and a great display of innovative technology.” – Lean Rose, dental technician “Very well put together with subjects that cover a variety of topics.” – Kelsey, orthodontic dental technician

Helping clients manage snoring and sleep apnoea l
Matt Everatt, Director of S4S Dental, will be presenting in the CDT Conference and OTA Seminars, on behalf of the OTA, at the Dental Technology Showcase (DTS) this May. Discussing why he feels his session entitled “Snoring & sleep apnoea – A role for the laboratory” is relevant for dental technicians today, he says: “Obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) and snoring are on the rise as we see a larger number of the population becoming clinically and morbidly obese. In addition, treatment for OSA and snoring is now commonplace in our adult population and patients are becoming increasingly aware that they can find successful treatment from their dentists. “During my session, delegates will be introduced to the background of OSA and snoring issues. They will be presented with the clinical signs and symptoms and screening protocols to ensure patients are obtaining the very best treatment options for them. My goal is to help delegates become more confident in offering a new product and service to their dental clients who may be caring for these patients.”
About why he would encourage delegates to attend his session at DTS 2022, Matt continues: “Many dental technicians will have been asked to produce a Mandibular Advancement Device by one of their clients, but have had no previous experience

ZIRKONZAHN FRESCO CERAMICS – NEW CERAMICS FOR VENEERING GINGIVAL AND VESTIBULAR TOOTH AREAS
Complete restoration on titanium bars made with Prettau® 3 Dispersive® zirconia, layered with Fresco Gingiva and Fresco Enamel.
w With the new ceramic pastes Fresco Gingiva and Fresco Enamel, monolithic and slightly reduced zirconia structures can be quickly and easily veneered in the gingival and vestibular tooth regions. Especially in the gingival region, a characterisation with stains is no longer necessary, since a natural gingiva reproduction can be achieved by purely applying the ceramic pastes. Compared to conventional ceramics, Fresco pastes remain moist for a longer time and can be modelled for several hours. The consistency of the pastes can be further personalised by adding the two mixing liquids Fresco Liquid and Fresco Gel, depending on the preferred working method. Due to their high primary density, the pastes exhibit very low shrinkage. This means that one Fresco firing cycle is sufficient to finish the tooth shape and the gingiva after the first firing. With this firing process, zirconia structures of different sizes can be fired simultaneously. No parameters such as holding
