Students may see bonfires on campus before snowfall, since the Putnam County Board of Commissioners let the burn ban expire last Wednesday.

Putnam County was among the 67 of Indiana’s 92 counties placing a ban on bonfires last week. Angie Nally, director of Public Safety, said the regulations were put in place due to droughts and concern of fires breaking out in the region.

The county-wide proclamation expired Wednesday at 1 p.m. The commissioners had the opportunity to renew the ban, but they opted to let it lapse.

ment coordinator and director of the Nature Park, said the ability to light a bonfire is looked at on a day-to-day basis now that the ban is lifted. He has already talked with people interested in starting bonfires in the park over the next few weeks if weather conditions allow.

“We need to consider people’s desires, but also have to look at [the] issue of safety,” Cox said.

Nally and Cox did not notice any groups disobeying the burn ban while it was in place. Nally said the burn regulation enacted by the university in September may have helped cooperation. Under the self-imposed rule, Cox said the Nature Park staff prohibited “recreational fires without our knowledge.”

Although the ban burn was re-

spected, it was an inconvenience to some groups on campus who previously hoped to have bonfires and cookouts this fall.

Patrick McMullen, president of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity, said his fraternity had to forgo plans to use a fire pit due to the burn ban, even after talking with Public Safety and the Greencastle Fire Department about safe fire use.

“It’s unfortunate, but I understand,” McMullen said. “In times of serious drought, it makes sense.”

According to Cox, the burn ban has caused some confusion about the use of the campus fire pit. The emergency management page on Public Safety’s website will be updated this week to include more information about fire-pit safety.

Mentor themes combine RA, mentor efforts

Freshmen have long received guidance from their student mentors and resident advisers. But this year, for the first time, the two programs have joined together to provide freshmen with a more cohesive guidance experience.

“I think in years past ... we’ve been sort of separate, that there’s not really a relationship between us,” said senior Kate Pickering, who has been a first-year resident adviser, or FYRA, since her sophomore year. “It was always the same goal, but we weren’t always doing it together.”

The advising students now receive has not changed drastically from years past; the major change is in the way the material is organized. DePauw’s First-Year Experience now uses a system of dividing the material such that each week features a different theme.

This system is not new to the mentor program, but this year is the first time FYRAs have also followed the themes. The themes were determined by the First-Year Experience committee, a group made up of staff from the offices of both Student and Academic Life.

During the spring and summer, the committee developed the theme ideas and later decided what programs would compliment the needs of each

center,” she said.

According to Setchell, such was the intent when deciding how to structure things this year. She said she believes it has made the program more intentional, hopefully taking away some of the overwhelming elements of orientation and adjustment to college life in general.

Pickering appreciates the stronger communication between mentors and FYRAs this year.

“Hopefully [the information] is overlapping in some ways, like if someone needs help with something that they feel like they can talk to either me or their mentor.”

First-time mentor Andrew Pfaff, a junior, also finds it easier to communicate with his mentees knowing that FYRAs focus on the same themed issues simultaneously. However, he also said it is important for mentors to focus on the specific issues that arise in their mentor groups. He believes mentors need to learn how to best use the themes while still working with the needs of their individual group or floor.

Not everyone is thrilled with the themes. Senior mentor Brianna Jewell believes the themes sometimes hinder her group meetings. While she said the themes set a basis for how to guide meetings, she sometimes encounters problems when trying to present the topics fluidly. For exam-

ple, she said she believes that sometimes bonding is just as important as discussing the assigned information, and keeping the meetings fun and less structured makes meetings less of a “chore.”

The mentor program will continue with the theme weeks next semester, but Setchell said it will be less “intense.”

“We really know that most firstyear students will have made that transition during the first semester and need less support from their [FY]RA or mentor,” she said.

So far, Setchell has received positive feedback from the mentors regarding the theme weeks. Freshmen completed an evaluation of their specific mentors that included a portion about some of the events thus far, but a larger survey will be sent out to students during Winter Term. Until then, Setchell is hesitant to evaluate the system, but believes the system shows promise and is headed in the right direction.

Pickering said she generally believes students have benefited from the new structure of the program.

“I’ve just had a lot of people who are doing well, who are loving DePauw and have transitioned really nicely,” she said. “And I think maybe that they don’t have to say it, but if they’ve made that transition then it’s been successful.”

“It’s not meant to be anything time intensive for first-year students but just to give them a little extra support and sort of something to think about each week,” said Cara Setchell, associate dean of students.

Setchell introduces each theme by sending an e-mail to the freshman class to provide students with something to think about and inform them of how to best access the different resources. Themes so far have included: “Living in community on a residential campus,” “Building class unity and Tiger Pride,” “Exploring the opportunities of the liberal arts,” “Developing meaningful relationships,” “Maintaining balance and personal wellness” and “Connecting to DePauw: Spirit, history and traditions.” This week focused on academic planning for the next semester. Another theme, “Navigating resources to support your intellectual life,” introduced students to the different academic resource centers available on campus.

Freshman Shelsa Marcel said she plans to use the Writing Center next week because of the programming revolving around the theme.

“I heard about it from my mentor first, we had a meeting and she told us about the different resources we could use, and then I also heard about it from my English professor . . . and my adviser took us [to] the advising

Now, DePauw freshman Mackenzie Cremeans and junior Yves-Marie Toussaint are fundraising to ensure a safer parking lot environment.

saint, in partnership with the Putnam County Youth Soccer Association, hope to raise money for a fence in Big Walnut Sports Park in Hardwick’s honor. The fence will separate the soccer field from the parking lot, and hopefully prevent future accidents.

“Initially, me and Yves were already talking about a fundraiser for Putnam County Youth Soccer team in August,” Cremeans said. “When the incident happened, we thought it would be a great way to honor the community.

We decided to shift our focus a little to help Eli.” Creamans and Toussaint worked with the PCYSA as part of their placement with the Bonner Scholarship program. Pedar Foss, dean of academic life and president of PCYSA, gave them the idea to plan the fundraiser.

The money will be raised through a soccer tournament. The event consists of three-on-three soccer tournaments in which participants create their own teams, with members contributing a fee

of $10. This Saturday, participants who are 20 years old and older will partake in the “Rising Moon” contest. Players between the ages of 10 and 19 will compete in the “Flying Pumpkins” contest on Sunday. Both events will take place at Big Walnut Sports Park.

Although registration ended Thursday, DePauw students still have the opportunity to offer straight donations during the event this weekend. Students may also purchase a T-shirt for

$10. The PCYSA will be selling $4 tickets for sweepstakes in which attendees can purchase and win prizes.

Foss said he anticipates the donations will greatly contribute to the safety of PCYSA players and the Big Walnut Sports Park.

“This fence is something that’s meant to be there for years to come. Were trying to make a better and safer playing environment,” Foss said.

“Eli has played in leagues since he was three. Hopefully, he’ll play again.”

ArtsFest blends Greencastle and DePauw communities

Sophomore Stephanie Kohlman tried to represent the theme of this year’s by creating a spinning top which brought together the communities of Greencastle and DePauw.

With the same concept of balance in mind, ArtsFest: 2010 aims to continue sharing art in various forms while bridging the divide between DePauw and the Greencastle community. The ArtsFest planning committee set the theme of the ninth annual celebration, which starts this Sunday and continues throughout next week, with two main ideas in mind: involving the people of Greencastle and going green. Based on these aims the committee generated the name “Art and the Green Castle” to encapsulate their goals.

Gigi Fenlon, coordinator of ArtsFest and chairman of the ArtsFest planning committee, said this was the first time in the event’s history that four community members served on the board. She believes their presence helped convey a sense of what the community wants out of the event and aided the committee in planning accordingly.

“It’s art in and of the community,” Fenlon said. “We used the split between green and castle to give it deeper meaning. People can deal with green issues in the community, community relations and consider why Greencastle is named what

it’s named.”

Fenlon added that the committee attempts to mirror actions of DePauw’s administration each year, and this year President Brian Casey led them to community involvement.

“We’ve been luckiest when we aligned our theme broadly with what is going on with the university,” Fenlon said. “This year that meant going with Brian Casey’s plan of reaching out to the community.”

Local graphic designer, painter and self-proclaimed “townie” Jennifer Herrold created the logo for ArtsFest with the aim of incorporating all aspects of this year’s message.

Her design depicts a blue and red horizon with two birds as well as apparently lifeless trees surrounding East College. It also features a hand placing billboards on a post with information about the event.

Herrold explained the she sought to draw out the connection to Greencastle while also emphasizing the ideas of green and castle by showing East College in green.

“This year’s theme really gives meaning to the word Greencastle,” Herrold said. “It also inspires more thought as to why the town was named Greencastle.”

Monon ticket sales shift from paper to online this year

DePauw fans won’t have Monon tickets in their hands until Nov. 1 this year since tickets are sold online only.

Bill Wagner, director of sports information, noted that while this is a change from previous years, Monon tickets have sold online in the past.

The change in this year’s sale was re-introduced to offer a hassle-free purchasing process for all fans.

“I think online sales make pur-

DePauw fans bought tickets at $16 apiece this year. According to Ken Owen, director of media relations, at 5:40 p.m. on Oct. 28, there were 1,000 tickets left of the 4,000 tickets given to DePauw from Wabash College. He predicted the tickets would sell out days before the game because of the Tigers’ successful football record.

“Wabash added more visitor

seats a few years ago, and with the unusual season this year, it’s hard to say (when tickets will sell out),” he said.

Cotton agreed, noting that for students who are planning to go the game, they should act fast. He too believes the game “will probably be a sellout.”

Before deciding about the process of ticket sales for next year, this year’s sales need to be evaluated.

Since DePauw will host next year’s game, there will be a different protocol for the tickets given to DePauw

students, faculty and staff.

“When the game is at DePauw we modify the process because students, faculty and staff are eligible for complimentary tickets,” Cotton said.

name “Teeter.” Evans said he appreciates the idea of reaching out to the community through art.

“I really think reaching out to the community is something that needs to be done more at DePauw,” Evans said. “I know that we don’t make an effort enough, and they really want to get involved here. So I think this is a good opportunity to really do that.”

The sustainability side of the theme also permeates the week’s events, from the fashion show “Trash Our Runway” to an orchestra piece entitled “Global warming.”

Freshman Maggie Eppelheimer plans to play in the orchestra concert Sunday afternoon and hopes the piece will push people to consider and act on global warming.

The first event, Art Attack, will take place Sunday and incorporates both themes of ArtsFest, bringing together 33 campus organizations to work on projects with the children of Greencastle.

As Kohlman prepares her spinning top for the Arts Walk next week, she hopes that the communities of Greencastle and DePauw will balance and spin together rather than topple as they have in the past.

“I made the top with these two pieces,” she said. “And inside there is a puzzle piece that has to do with the two pieces of the puzzle: Greencastle and DePauw.”

Campus garners better grade on sustainability

A recent survey of the university’s sustainability efforts showed improvement with an increase of one letter grade.

Last year, DePauw earned a C+, but this year’s sustainable efforts merited a grade of B- in an annual College Sustainability Report Card released by Sustainable Endowments Institute.

Sarah Levy, communications fellow for the Sustainable Endowments Institute, said that 322 colleges and universities filled out four surveys in campus operations, dining services, endowment investment and student activities.

“The questions vary on what we find works, and also new innovations,” she said. “We look at the sustainability offices over the years, and we adapt questions based on what’s developing.”

This year, 52 schools earned a grade of A, and the B range, which included DePauw, had the most with 178 schools.

Missy Orr, assistant director of sustainability initiatives, said that while it is nice that DePauw moved up, she really doesn’t view the rankings as overly credible. However, she does think that it shows things to strive for.

“It’s definitely satisfying to get a better grade.

We were a little disappointed last year,” she said.

“We’ve been doing a lot in the past couple years.

But participating in a process like this, we look at where we need to go.”

Christopher Wells, vice president for communications and strategic initiatives, said the grade is a nice thing to report, although the administration doesn’t give it much value.

“At this point we haven’t joined on with the schools that are saying, ‘we’re no longer playing

that game,’” he said. “For that reason we were rated by the systems — whether or not we’ll continue, I don’t know, but I would say the individual ranking systems are less important than actually making progress.”

Orr said DePauw’s sustainability office is working with a new self-ranking system known as STARS — the Sustainability Tracking Assessment and Rating System — that she feels is more credible.

As for the grade, Orr said DePauw will decide by the end of the year if they will continue with the College Sustainability Report Card.

“It’s really time and resource intensive to complete these surveys,” she said. “It is unsatisfying the way they compare universities. There’s a movement in higher education to move to a different rating system which is STARS — which is a big deal.”

Court of Appeals makes sixth appearance on campus

Students and faculty witnessed the judicial system in action when the Court of Appeals made its sixth visit to DePauw Tuesday.

Three justices of the Indiana Court of Appeals visited campus for the session hosted by the political science department, which included an official hearing for the case of Elizabeth Littlefield v. Indiana.

Littlefield was convicted of disorderly conduct after her arrest during a domsetic dispute with her husband. Both sides made arguments, and Littlefield gave a three-minute rebuttal.

In the appeal, Littlefield’s defense argued that the comments that led to her conviction were part of political speech, protected under the Indiana Constitution.

Lilttlefield claimed that during the dispute, an officer told her to be quiet and included a deragatory term in his request. She responded by standing up, walking toward the officer and asking him to not refer to her in that manner. She was arrested shortly after.

After the hearing, the floor was opened to the audience for questions about the judicial process.

Matt Hertenstein, an associate professor of psychology, specializes in touch and emotion. As an expert on the biology of touch, he appeared on the Today Show in 2009 and explained his studies on how touch affects physiology. He took some time out of his busy schedule to take a few minutes to tell me about himself: 1. I went to Luther College in Decorah, Iowa and got my Ph.D. at University of California at Berkley.

2. I was born in Rockford, Ill. and am therefore a Cubs fan.

3. I have a wife and a 4 1/2-year-old

son.

4. I’m a Greencastle fan, and I have been since moving here in 2002.

5. My first job was at Little Caesars pizza. I just made pizzas and worked the counter. I’m a horrible cook though.

6. My favorite job was as a camp counselor. I met my wife there, and she was the camp cook. It was a camp romance.

Greencastle Project Ignition

Many local Greencastle businesses have been hit hard by the recession, and Greencastle Project Ignition, Inc. is doing something about it.

GPI is a nonprofit dedicated to improving the economy by helping small businesses start or improve many different facets of their companies.

Their mission statement, “To provide resources for new and expanding businesses in order to advance economic growth in the greater Greencastle area,” outlines what their main goal is.

GPI’s extensive list of client services includes accounting, financial, human resources, legal, marketing and networking services, as well as web and business plan development and technical support. Essentially, the nonprofit serves as a source for businesses to seek advice and strategies in starting a new company or improving an already existing business.

The handful of students like Harrod involved with GPI play a vital role in the nonprofit’s success.

“We really reach out to students and want their ideas and participation in every way,” Doan said. “We are creating an environment of not being afraid to fail.”

Harrod started her own business — TigerAde Care Packages — in this risk-taking setting, which creates and sells care packages for parents or friends to send to DePauw students.

With GPI’s help, Harrod and seniors Ben Stilwill and John Brickson put their Management Fellows capstone project from last semester into action.

“This summer was just the push I really needed to get started, and it was a great experience,” Harrod said. “Running your own business is a lot of fun.”

As well as helping students create businesses, GPI provides internships for students. Harrod said her nonprofit work offered valuable handson experience, especially for Management Fellows who are interested in future business endeavors.

“It really gives students more opportunity than a typical internship to really take the wheel and put their ideas into action as they see fit, and have a lot of flexibility and responsibility that they might not get anywhere else at that age,” she said.

Furthermore, Harrod said the student involvement is essential in building up the Greencastle economy.

“Greencastle has all of the tools that it needs to be successful, and DePauw students are what is going to be that difference,” she said. “Combining the DePauw students and Greencastle is going to be that make-or-break point that really takes Greencastle to the next level.”

Members of the board of directors include sophomore Jacob Bonifield, who serves as secretary on the executive committee, senior Breana Buchler and junior Emily Reavis. Another DePauw student, sophomore Adam Weaver, is the assistant office manager at GPI. Like Harrod, Weaver mostly deals with the finances of GPI. As a nonprofit, GPI is funded through various private donors. The organization also earns revenue from their clients, but they do not charge as much as a normal consulting group because all of the participating business leaders donated their time.

In addition to working on finances, Weaver has been organizing a library system with resources for clients. In working for GPI, Weaver believes he is doing something beneficial for the local community.

“The statistics show that small business that are part of a small business incubator have a much higher rate of survival than those who go

at it alone,” Weaver said. “So I think what we provide to different businesses whether it be helping with marketing or just giving them a professional office space for a discounted price, I think that really helps them survive in the first few years.”

Harrod thinks GPI improves something even more valuable than the local economy — the relationship between DePauw and Greencastle.

“I’ve heard so many people throughout my time at DePauw talk about Greencastle towngown relations and how to improve it, and GPI is the only actual place that I’ve seen do something and actually have DePauw as one of the foundations of the organization,” she said.

Like the DePauw students who volunteer with the organization, Doan has high hopes for GPI’s role in Greencastle’s future.

“I think that Greencastle’s Project Ignition is going to be something that really moves Greencastle forward,” she said.

Waiting for more meaningful student government action This year’s DePauw Student Government entered office promising to be, in the words of Executive Vice President David Dietz, “a real functioning voice of the student body instead of a dead apparatus.” President Christine Walker said this government’s first action — directing all of its proposals to specific faculty and staff members and departments for prompt and appropriate feedback — would allow it to be the most powerful government ever at this school.

Their ideas, plans and ideals seem promising. We’d like to see more substantial results. Yes, much of the maneuvering on these issues takes place behind the scenes and out of the public spotlight. But as students we would like to know more about what’s being considered and what might come up for a vote.

It is true that some of this information appears on the government’s website, but that website remains a mere shell with lists of names and biographies. When you click on the “legislation” link, there is some more relevant and helpful information — but only some. Intended links to this year’s constitution, white papers, resolutions and even minutes don’t work.

A useful schedule for discussion groups and intended resolutions or white papers is also on that page, but it seems to be out of date or not have resulted in much. It mentions a committee meeting on the school of music’s relations with the college of liberal arts in September, but we haven’t heard anything about it. We’d love to check the minutes to see if that committee has done anything, but those aren’t available on the website.

A student representative body should record the position of students on an issue, so in that way the white paper supporting our athletic move to the North Coast Athletic Conference is useful. We question why the paper took so long to get to this stage, but we do see its necessity. And overall, we think the government could have produced more this semester than the NCAC white paper and the feedback resolution.

We know the ideas are there, and that these things take time. And we have faith that this government is working hard. What we ask is that the communication improves between students and our representatives. Update the website, tell us what’s currently on the table and tell us what you’ve abandoned.

All the pieces are in place, but we’re still looking for results.

DePauw’s hands-off approach inhibits the active presence of faith converstations on campus. DePauw avoids confronting the conflict and balance between being a secular school and providing for faith-centered students.

In a place that offers many temptations and obstacles, it is critical for faith to hold an important place in students’ lives and not be deterred by the obstacles they encounter. Students should strive to take advantage of the opportunities available to them. Let’s help each other celebrate our faiths and fight a system of intolerance from both faculty and students. Be a part of keeping the faith.

Foreign languages critical for students, nation A

ccording to the U.S. Census Bureau, around 20 percent of United States residents speak a language other than English at home as of 2006. In fact, the Spanish-speaking population alone has grown by 211 percent since 1980. Yet the importance of language learning isn’t just a domestic issue.

A report on the results of the National Security Language Initiative noted that “foreign language skills are essential ... to economic competitiveness and security interests of the nation.” It is easy to see why learning a language is so important in today’s world.

DePauw acknowledges this importance with a two-credit foreign language graduation requirement. Many liberal arts colleges do.

In light of the ever-increasing necessity for foreign language instruction, the president of the State University of New York (SUNY) at Albany, whose website describes it as an “internationally recognized public research institution,” an-

nounced that French, Italian and Russian (along with theater and classics) would be eliminated.

Wait, that doesn’t make sense.

The given reason for the cut was money, as usual. Fewer students were enrolled in those degree programs, so they were cancelled. DePauw’s language programs, too, have felt the effect of the recent recession, which led to the non-renewal of term-faculty contracts in 2009. According to the Feb. 13, 2009 issue of The DePauw, “the most immediate impact will be felt in departments like modern languages that rely heavily on term faculty members.”

I suspect that what happened at SUNY-Albany won’t be happening at DePauw. But both examples point to a worrisome trend. Why have language departments borne the brunt of budget cuts when the importance of language education is skyrocketing?

tity of the DePauw student: we are a campus of extremes. One of the core values of our student body is the liberal idea of eco-responsibility and sustainability, yet we also are a university with deeply conservative values.

Our institution is rated as one of the best liberal arts schools in the country, yet at the same time we have a reputation for intense partying. And our greek system can swing from intense inter-house rivalries to joint philanthropy efforts on a day-by-day basis.

Fall break, then, is just a microcosm of DePauw’s polarized nature.

One week we are furiously studying, doing everything we can to try and work through the mountain of books and assignments piled on our desks. The next week, we’re facedown on the couch, determined to either grow into the couch or at least leave a permanent indentation in the cushion. Secretly though, we wish we were back on campus, exposed to the overscheduled, crazy, busy stimuli we find

in Greencastle.

Last week, the most pressing issue on my plate was whether or not it was worthwhile to reach for the television remote. This week, I find myself planning a haunted house, reading metaphysical poetry, studying for an exam and attempting (unsuccessfully) to meet girls.

So, despite my intense longing to return to hibernation, I must forge ahead like my fellow classmates. And though each of us deals with internal ambivalence this week, hopefully we can all take solace in the fact that we are not alone.

Besides, when you get right down to it, I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Fall season ends with high spring hopes

With the leaves turning and the fall season coming to a close, the Tigers head to the cold winter months on a hot streak.

In their final competition of this season, the Tigers finished in a tie for fifth in the 13-team Charleston Southern Wendy’s Invitational Oct. 18-19 in Charleston, S.C. The Tigers’ two-round score of 634 slotted the Tigers 32 shots behind invitational champion Bucknell University’s score of 602.

The four teams that outshot the Tigers are Div. I programs.

Twenty-seven shots behind the Tigers, Methodist University finished in tenth as the only other Div. III team in the field. Methodist has won the NCAA Div. III Championship the last 13 seasons and had won its previous four tournaments in the fall.

Head coach Vince Lazar said

the team ended the season on a satisfying note.

“It was a good performance,” Lazar said. “It was far from the best we’ve played this semester.

But relative to the field and the length of the golf course, it was a pretty solid performance.”

Sophomore Camila Romero led the Tigers with a seventh place performance of ten over par 152.

Juniors Kelly Gaughan and Taylor Beaty added top-25 finishes with Gaughan shooting a 159 for 21st place and Beaty’s 160 was good for a tie for 25th. Freshman Paige Gooch finished in a tie for 34th with a 163, and senior Natalie Gough rounded out the team score with a 54th-place 171.

Romero said outperforming a team like Methodist was a confidence builder for the team.

“We left a lot of shots out there and we could have played much better,” Romero said. “But I think we played pretty well which is exciting for us for the coming

spring.”

Lazar said he wanted to keep the fact that the Tigers outshot Methodist by 27 strokes in perspective. He said the tournament probably wasn’t as important to Methodist as it was for DePauw.

“That’s the worst I’ve ever seen them play,” Lazar said of the 13 seasons he’s seen Methodist play. “The scores will validate that. Those were the highest scores they’ve ever shot two days in a row.”

The Tigers are currently ranked No. 2 in the Golf World/ National Golf Coaches Association Div. III poll receiving six first place votes compared to Methodist’s 14.

Gough said the fall season will help the team’s confidence in the spring season with the national championship in their sights for May. The team will spend the offseason working individually on conditioning and swing lessons.

Runners take championship expectations down to Texas

Winning the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championship seven years in a row brings with it a certain amount of pressure. The women’s cross-country team will attempt to carry on that tradition Saturday during the annual conference meet in San Antonio.

The Tigers are prepared to move into the postseason following a strong performance at the beginning of fall break at the Brooks Invitational in Oshkosh, Wis. DePauw totaled 462 points to finish 14th out of 36 Div. II and III teams.

“Our focus was more so on having fun, relax, remembering why we run,” said junior co-captain Claire Hollis.

“We were more motivated and more pumped up at Oshkosh to race well, so we were happy with the outcome. It was a good step forward.”

Sophomore Jess Macy, who has been battling an injury, paced the Tigers with a 64th-place finish. She completed the 6K course in 23 minutes and 10 seconds, followed by Hollis at 23:13. Junior Lisa Becharas recorded a time of 23:48, while freshman Siri Retrum and senior Alana DeWitt notched times of 23:51 and 24:13, respectively.

Head coach Kori Stoffregen said the race also answered several of the team’s lingering questions about injuries and youth.

“We’re starting to see who’s stepping forward now and should be ready for varsity racing,” he said. “We feel really good about what happened up there, and so we’ve got some good momentum going into this weekend.”

Even though Rhodes College is favored to contend for the SCAC title on Saturday, Hollis said the Tigers now have the confidence in themselves to challenge them. While the dynamic of this year’s squad differs from years past due to its relative youth, she says DePauw’s strong sense of tradition will be a motivating factor.

“It’s a lot more than just a race. There’s girls many years back who have raced and started traditions and winning streaks,” Hollis said. “We talk about that last 800 meters — we want to see it in your eyes that you’re hungry, you’re angry. You are not going to let any girl pass you ... We’ve got to want it more.”

Tigers notch pair of wins over fall break

The women’s soccer team finished 2-1 during its matches during fall break, losing to Austin College 1-0 but beating the University of Dallas 4-2 and Centre College 2-1 in overtime.

The Tigers first traveled to Texas to take on the Austin Kangaroos on Oct. 15. Despite 12 shots on goal, the team lost after Austin’s Mackenzie Lund scored after 39 minutes of play.

“We were definitely frustrated after our match [against Austin],” freshman Holly Tipp said.

Tipp said the team used its frustration against its match against Dallas two days later, when the Tigers scored four goals, with freshman Angela Cotherman scoring the first goal at 19 minutes and the last goal at 86 minutes. Sophomore Dana Sprague scored at 27 minutes and senior Julia Drummond scored at 50 minutes to round out the 4-2 final score. The Tigers had a huge advantage with corner kicks, leading the Crusaders 6-0.

Even with the win on Oct. 17, the team was not happy with its performance on the road. Junior Alex Ehr said the team took those frustrations and transformed it

into a week of hard workouts to prepare for Centre College on Oct. 23.

Centre led the match following a goal in the 8th minute until four minutes before the end of the game, when Ehr scored on a header from a corner kick by Drummond. Ehr scored again in overtime, this time unassisted.

“It was a perfect ball,” Ehr said of the first goal. “The second I had the ball and I found that the goalie was out of the box.”

Ehr credited her goals to motivation provided from her team.

“Our whole team was working so hard,” she said. “It was a team motivation to keep working.”

Their fall-break play left the Tigers 9-5 on the season. Although the Tigers’ next opponent is Earlham College, who they play tonight at 7:30 p.m. at Boswell Field, they are gearing up for their match against Trinity on Nov. 5.

“We’re taking it one step at a time,” Ehr said. “But after this weekend, we’re going to play like we will against Trinity.”

Added Tipp, “We want to be able to get results in our next three games, win conference, and at least get a bid to the [national tournament].”

Victories catapult team to 11th nationally Fall break’s 2-0-1 record means team is riding high with confidence

After finishing fall break play 20-1, the men’s soccer team is not yet satisfied. But while they may not have been satisfied, the Tigers finished well enough to be ranked 11th in the nation, according to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America poll.

The Tigers defeated Austin College 3-2 on Oct. 15 and Colorado College 1-0 on Oct. 17. Junior Derek O’Grady said that the team’s performance was impressive because the team traveled from Texas to Colorado in such a short time, yet managed to notch two wins.

Against Austin, the Tigers

came out with a quick goal from freshman Ben Hazen just under five minutes into the match off of an assist from Kreigh Kamman.

Austin answered with two goals in the 28th and 49th minutes of the match. DePauw answered with two goals, one at 70 minutes by Gary Pett off an assist from junior Ryan Keefe and senior Danny Witzerman and another at 71 minutes by sophomore Matt Schoenfeld from an assist from junior Sam Meyer.

The Tigers then traveled to Colorado College, where a goal

“Austin was a slight let down,” O’Grady said. “Colorado College was a good defensive effort. I’m

very pleased with both.”

Despite the two wins, the Tigers tied with Centre College 0-0 on Oct. 23, leaving the Tigers 131-2 on the season. The Tigers had 11 shots attempted and the Colonels had 12, but neither team was able to get the ball into the net. In addition, junior Andy Desmarais received a red card, which hurt the Tigers even more.

Hazen said he though both teams did well and fought hard.

“We had our own chances to score and weren’t able to capitalize on them,” he said.

The Tigers have the weekend off but return to Boswell Field on Nov. 5 to take on Trinity University. The match with Trinity will play a large role in the team’s postseason chances. The Trinity

Tigers are currently ranked first in the NSCAA poll and are DePauw’s main contenders for the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference title — and the automatic bid to the NCAA tournament that comes along with it.

O’Grady said the team is taking it slow to recover from the rest of the season.

“We’re a little beaten up from the long schedule,” he said, but added that the team is determined and will focus on the little things to improve the team.

Hazen stressed the importance of the upcoming games for the Tigers.

“We have to win the next two games,” he said. “We’re keeping focused and talking about it every day.”

Team struggles over break

Two teams stand atop the conference standings: DePauw (11-5, 5-2) and Rhodes College (14-1, 7-0).

After a second loss to Rhodes last Friday, the Tigers need to figure out how Rhodes has twice broken through its defense and negated offensive attacks.

The first loss on Oct. 1 went to penalty strokes after two overtime sessions where the Tigers lost 32. In that game, the Tigers jumped out to a 2-0 lead at the half, but failed to divert offensive pressure and allowed Rhodes to even the score and go into overtime.

In stark contrast, Friday’s meeting between the two teams was completely dominated by Rhodes.

DePauw was shutout for the first time all season and Rhodes scored once in each half for a final score of 2-0.

“It’s not that Rhodes is a more talented team,” said sophomore Katie Broecker. “They are always consistent in the way that they play.”

Rhodes outshot DePauw 16-5 and held a 7-6 advantage in penalty corners. If the Tigers want to beat Rhodes for the conference championship, Broecker said they must play to their potential.

“Rhodes always shows up prepared to win at any cost,” Broecker said. “It’s tough to beat any team three times in a row, so if we get a rematch in the conference it will be a really exciting and competitive game.”

The loss to Rhodes was the Tigers’ third straight loss after losing to Denison University (6-10) Oct. 16 and Washington and Jefferson College (13-3) the day after. Against Denison and Washington and Jefferson, sophomore Margaret Ellis scored her 17th and 18th goals, breaking the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference single-season scoring record. The Tigers were outshot by a combined total of 19 strokes as the team allowed early goals and the Tigers were not able

to get into an offensive rhythm.

Sunday the Tigers snapped the streak with a 32 overtime win over Hendrix College (5-8, 1-6). Led

by Ellis’ two goals, one being the game-winner in the second overtime, DePauw squeaked out the victory after surrendering a 2-0 lead within a span of three minutes in the second half. Ellis’ game-winning goal came on from a Bridgette Shamleffer assist in the 93rd minute.

Broecker said the victory was key in re-establishing their confidence and improving morale.

“We found a lot of areas to improve on in order to maintain our 2-0 lead,” Broecker said. “Instead of having to play through two OTs. The other teams score when we get comfortable with our lead and drop our level of play.”

Next week the team will be participating in a fundraiser called “Stick It to Cancer”. In a series of events hosted by the team, including a field hockey clinic Wednesday for just a dollar, they hope to raise money for the National Foundation for Cancer Research. A total of five teams in the SCAC are participating in the fundraiser: DePauw, Centre College, Rhodes, Sewanee: The University of the South and Hendrix.

“We have set a team goal to raise $3,500 by the end of the conference tournament,” said junior Lissy Collin. “Another is that this is not just an intercampus competition, but also a competition between all of the SCAC field hockey teams. It would be fantastic if we could dominate the conference tournament, as well as the Stick It to Cancer competition.”

The team is participating in this fundraiser because the topic hits home for so many students and faculty on campus.

“By raising awareness and support at DePauw, we can help the National Foundation for Cancer Research accomplish their goal of saving lives,” Collin said.

Along with the fundraiser, the Tigers will be getting ready for their final two regular season games Saturday at Transylvania University (1-12) and Sunday at SCAC foe Centre (9-4, 3-3).

Holder steps in for Smith, Tigers secure third in SCAC

Down a senior starter for a nine-match stretch in the latter half of the season, the Tigers adjusted through struggles the past couple of weeks.

Despite suffering a three-match losing streak, the Tigers rebounded with victories in their last five matches.

Setter Ali Smith suffered a ruptured ligament in her thumb against Rhodes College on Oct. 3, sidelining her for several weeks to recover from an operation to repair the damage. In stepped junior Brianna Holder to fill the shoes of Smith, who has been starting since the 2008 season.

“I definitely think that we did a pretty

decent job of adjusting to the changes,” Holder said. “That’s kind of a big change with the setter being like the quarterback position and Ali starting virtually every game this season. I think the team really embraced the change and we didn’t let our intensity slide.”

The Tigers won their first match without Smith back on Oct. 12 in Neal Fieldhouse by a 3-2 margin over Hanover College. However, the following weekend the team struggled on the road in Sherman, Texas, losing three of four conference matches at Austin College. The first two losses came to Colorado College (0-3) and Southwestern University (2-3) the top two teams in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference. The next day a 1-3 loss to Austin and a 3-0 victory over Oglethorpe University rounded out a

rocky weekend.

“That was a really tough weekend, which we knew it would be,” said senior middle hitter Kristen Chynoweth. “We know that our conference is so up in the air and every weekend teams have to play their best. There’s no kind of off game.

We just played some really tough teams and unfortunately not just one area but several areas of our game were off that weekend.”

The next weekend, the Tigers carried the momentum gathered in the Oglethorpe victory to the four-match tournament hosted by Oglethorpe in Atlanta. Victories over Millsaps College (3-0), Birmingham-Southern College (31), Hendrix College (3-2) and Sewanee: The University of the South (3-0) set the Tigers on a winning path and secured a

third-place regular season finish in the SCAC. Smith said that Holder’s ability to step in off the bench and keep the team in rhythm left the Tigers with confidence heading into the tail end of the season.

“She did exactly what she needed to do,” Smith said. “It was a great opportunity for her, and I really think she took it and ran with it. I think she did a great job, and we couldn’t have asked for a better position going into [the] conference [tournament].”

Smith will rejoin her teammates on the court this weekend for the team’s final regular season matches, one week before the SCAC tournament.

“I was grateful for the opportunity and I was grateful for the experience, but at the same time I’m glad Ali’s back play-

ing this weekend,” Holder said. “It’s her senior year and you can only hope for the best for someone in a time like this.”

Dubbed senior weekend to celebrate the careers of Smith, Chynoweth and libero Madison Hoenig the Tigers will play a pair of matches in Neal Fieldhouse against Bluffton University at 7 p.m. tonight and Marian University at 1 p.m. Saturday.

Smith said she’s excited to return to the lineup for the finale of the regular season after a painful couple of weeks.

“It’s never easy being out due to an injury,” Smith said. “To be going back into this weekend, I’m really excited about it and definitely ready to get back into the swing of things prior to going into conference next weekend.”

Men’s Swimming

Men’s swim team begins defense of SCAC championship tomorrow

After winning the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference championship and finishing seventh in the nation last year, the men’s swim team looks to bring home yet another conference title in the 20102011 season, their last in the SCAC. Led by senior captain Josh Baugh, the Tiger swimmers have won six straight conference championships. This year the team will attempt to capture its seventh consecutive title, and ninth overall.

Four swimmers, including Baugh and junior Johnny Montgomery, participated in last season’s NCAA Div. III championships. The 200-yard freestyle relay team finished second in the country, and the 800-yard freestyle team broke the school record in that event. Baugh and Montgomery both walked away as honorablemention All-Americans.

“We should definitely be able to get at least four guys back to nationals,” Baugh said. “I’m hoping, though, that we can

get six or seven there. We’re an optimistic team.”

Last year’s team graduated nine seniors who were key to the program’s success.

However, an influx of freshmen should keep the team competitive and atop the SCAC. “At first it looked like it might be tough without those seniors,” said junior Brendan Flores. “But we picked up a really strong freshman class so we’ll be fine.”

Baugh echoed Flores’ sentiments.

“It definitely hurts to lose those guys,” Baugh said. “We have a lot of young talent coming up, though. They’re just now reaching the level they can compete at.”

With the large number of freshmen and only six upperclassmen, DePauw will be one of the youngest teams in the SCAC. Despite this, the outlook for the season is bright.

“We’ve been looking really good for how young we are,” Baugh said. “We’ll definitely be looking to take conference again.”

DePauw returns several top swimmers from last year. Sophomore Matt Kukuru-

gya set school records in the 100-yard and 200-yard breaststroke and 200-yard IM last season, and looks to build off a fantastic freshman year.

Juniors Dylan Klossner, Brendan Fischer and Tom Smith also bring valuable experience to a team favored to win another SCAC championship.

As preseason practices end, the swimmers are ready and eager for the new season to begin. The young but confident team is setting out to win conference in the final year of SCAC competition.

“Our first goal is always to win conference,” Baugh said. “We’ve been working really hard to go out with a win in the last year in the SCAC.” The first meet for the Tigers is this Saturday at the University of Louisville.

DePauw will swim against conference rival Centre College, Washington and Lee University and a tough team from Washington University in St. Louis.

“So far we’ve been looking good in practice,” Flores said. “We’re excited for the weekend to open up against Wash U and Washington and Lee.”

Aware of history, Thrilling win in Texas clinches playoff berth Tigers see hope in last SCAC meet

During practice this week, head coach Kori Stoffregen turned to DePauw’s cross-country history for a little bit of inspiration.

Stoffregen took his runners to visit the program’s collection of trophies in the indoor track and field center. After winning seven straight conference titles from 2000-06, the Tigers have not reached the top of the podium since. With 2010 marking DePauw’s last year in the SCAC, Stoffregen and his squad have made it their goal to go out as conference champions, using the program’s tradition of excellence as a guide.

“Going into our last year in the conference, it is a big deal to us to leave our mark on it,” said sophomore Noah Droddy.

The Tigers took their last step toward that goal on Oct. 16, when they traveled to Oshkosh, Wis., for the Brooks Invitational. The men finished 13th out of 37 Div. II and III squads.

“The meet at Oshkosh is on a very fast course and it’s against pretty much the best competition we see all year. It’s just a really fun meet for us because of those factors,” Stoffregen said.

Junior Pete Richard led DePauw’s pack, finishing the course 88th overall in 25 minutes and 52 seconds. Droddy followed behind Richard at 98th in 25:57, while senior Nick Pucillo posted a time of 25:59. Freshman Adam Cecil and junior Tyler Giesting also scored for the Tigers, recording times of 26:17 and 26:21, respectively.

Top-ranked North Central College took home the team title with the low-score of 49 points. No. 4 Calvin College took second place, while No. 7 New York University finished third with 138 points. DePauw’s 463 points were enough to edge out several ranked squads, including No. 12 University of Wisconsin-Whitewater.

The Tigers hope to use that momentum at Saturday’s conference meet, hosted by Trinity University in San Antonio. Droddy said overcoming the defending champions, Colorado College, will require a united DePauw pack.

“It’s really important that we stay together and make sure we get as many people as we can in front of their runners,” he said. “This is kind of the culmination of our season — we’ve been working on it all year ... We’re excited.”

After what could be considered the gutsiest decision of the season, senior Nathan Evans reeled in a spectacular diving catch on a two-point conversion, capping off one of the most thrilling comebacks in recent memory Saturday against Trinity University.

After Trinity took an interception back for a touchdown and the lead with just over a minute remaining in the game, DePauw drove 62 yards in just five plays, punctuated by a 34-yard touchdown reception by allAmerican receiver senior Alex Koors.

Following a timeout before the point-after attempt, head coach Robby Long sent out the offense to go for two and the win. The successful attempt secured a 32-31 victory, a share of the SCAC championship, and an automatic playoff berth for DePauw.

“The whole time everyone was yelling to go for it, to go for two,” said senior defensive back Jonathan Lambert. “We had never won there, and it’s the last time they’re on our schedule so we wanted the win.

It was a great call, great throw and an unbelievable catch.”

DePauw started the game off hot with a 70-yard drive that ate up nearly nine minutes of first quarter time, but a fumble in the red zone ended the scoring chance.

After forcing the Trinity offense to go a quick three-and-out, DePauw got on the scoreboard first with a 23-yard touchdown pass from Michael Engle to senior Colin Doran.

“We’ve been playing well defensively and have been getting better every week,” Lambert said. “The strength of the defensive line is the heart and soul of our team, it makes things easy for the linebackers and defensive backs.”

Trinity was quick to rebound, as a 68-yard touchdown pass on the first play after the kickoff tied the score.

Early in the second quarter, DePauw regained the lead when Engle hit Koors for a 38-yard score.

“Every aspect of our offense was working well. We could throw and run whenever we wanted to,” Koors said. “We could have scored every time we had the ball, but we ended up stopping ourselves with penalties and turnovers.”

Trinity continued the seesaw battle with a 22-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Nykolas McKissic to Markham Stayton. Trinity then recovered the following kickoff and took the lead three plays later with a 35-yard McKissic touchdown pass.

Trinity kicker Garrett Biel nailed a 33-yard field goal with just over eight minutes remaining in the third to extend the Trinity lead to 24-14.

Less than three minutes later, DePauw answered with another Engle-to-Koors touchdown connection,

this time going for 30 yards.

“The run game was consistent and doing well the entire game,” Koors said. “That helped the receivers get open deep and have a lot of 1-on-1 matchups.”

DePauw kicker Eric Malm tied the score at 24-24 with a career-long 41-yard field goal with 10:56 remaining in the fourth quarter.

Trinity took what looked like the deciding lead when Ben Robinson picked off an Engle pass and ran it back for a touchdown.

Engle and the Tiger offense quickly marched downfield, tacking on an improbable late score with 20 seconds left in the game and bringing DePauw within one point of the lead.

“We were in the 2-minute offense, everyone was exhausted and huffing and puffing,” Koors said. “We were lucky to get a timeout right before. The offensive coordinator held up the sign to go for two, and it was a great play call.”

Nathan Evans’ diving catch in the end zone successfully converted the two-point conversion, and DePauw held the 32-31 lead for the win.

“Everyone was going nuts on the sideline,” Lambert said. “But we knew the defense still had to get ready. Their kicker is accurate from 50 and they have probably the best kick returner in the nation, so we couldn’t lose our heads.”

Two incomplete passes and a quarterback sack later, DePauw walked out with their first-ever win in San Antonio and the SCAC’s automatic berth in the NCAA Div. III playoffs.

“Our first goal was to win conference, so it’s nice to do this early,” Koors said. “We’re grateful for what’s happened this year, but we aren’t satisfied. We’re not finished yet.”

Engle connected on 28 of his 41 passes for 369 yards and four touchdowns, to go along with two interceptions. Running backs senior Derrick Karazsia and junior Jon Ellis had 51 and 50 yards rushing respectively.

Koors led all receivers with 170 yards on 10 catches and three scores. In the game, he broke both the DePauw and SCAC record for career receiving yards.

Brayden Dahlstrom added 98 yards on eight receptions.

James Foglton, Adam Hawkins and Matt Johnson each had eight tackles for DePauw. The defense allowed only 43 rushing yards and piled up eight sacks.

“We ran a bunch of different stunts and blitzes, and blitzed the safeties for the first time this year,” Lambert said. “The line was making the quarterback hold the ball for an extra second — those guys are animals.”

DePauw brings their 7-0 record home this Saturday hoping to extend their best start since 1951 against Birmingham-Southern College at 1 p.m.

“We’re super excited that we get another ring and have the first automatic bid,” Lambert said. “But it’s important we stay focused to run the table. We have good competition the next two weeks, and they always play hard.”
