AN UNSIGHTLY END

At the initial hearing, Dan Ryan didn’t speak. He couldn’t. He didn’t say anything when his parents spoke about his brother; he didn’t say anything when the parents of his brother’s killer spoke fondly of their son. His brother, Kevin Ryan, was a freshman at Towson University when Matthew Miller’s car jumped a curb and struck him. Miller was intoxicated and fled the scene, leaving 18-year-old Kevin Ryan in the middle of the road, where he was hit by a second car. He died on Oct. 14, 2007, two days later. But as Dan Ryan’s parents and
older brother Luke spoke at Miller’s hearing in 2008 about their lost son and brother, he was unable to find any words. So he kept quiet, like he largely has since his brother died. Until three weeks ago. Dan Ryan, now a junior criminology and criminal justice major, received a call from his dad, who’d heard Miller — the man convicted of felony negligent manslaughter — had applied to have the charges wiped from his record entirely. If it passes, the blood would be on no one’s hands. The hearing will be held in Towson tomorrow morning.

Bring on the bikes

East Campus preparations forge ahead Officials clear space for 38-acre project

For sophomore psychology major Dale Zhou, the last miles can be some of the hardest on his weekly bike rides along the Potomac River. Zhou spends his weekends riding outdoor bike trails, sometimes traveling more than 40 miles along the Anacostia Tributary Trail System, the Potomac River or Lake Artemesia. And he typically bikes 20 miles, four days a week, on a stationary bike in the Eppley Recreation Center. While this schedule, in addition to taking 19 credits, might be intense for some, Zhou said it is all worth it. He is one of several students training for the 11th annual 4k for Cancer this summer, a 4,400-mile, cross-country ride from Baltimore to Portland, San Francisco or Seattle. “It gets easier to push through it knowing I have hundreds of friends who are supporting me,” said Zhou, one of several university students currently training for the event. Since 2002, teams of bikers aged 18 to 25 have participated in the ride, sponsored by the Ulman Cancer Fund

Although officials have talked about forging ahead with the East Campus development for nearly a dozen years, they are now taking steps to free up space in the city and make the project a reality. Since the first phase of the project — a proposed 38-acre development that would revitalize College Park by bringing a 4star hotel, graduate housing, upscale restaurants and other amenities — requires space between Route 1 and Paint Branch Parkway, officials have been moving buildings to allocate more space for construction. To ensure the project stays on track, officials plan to move several facilities from Route 1 and create more space for East Campus developments.
