Recital Hall will be replaced with new classrooms, officials say BY TEDDY AMENABAR Staff writer

As officials finalize plans to overhaul the current CORE curriculum and implement the new general education program, Facilities Management crews are helping by constructing

three new classrooms in Tawes Hall — a project that will cost the department $12.9 million. The project, which has been listed as a “high priority project,” still awaits approval from the Board of Regents — the 17-member governing body that oversees the University System

of Maryland. The board is slated to vote on it in June. The project, which is expected to take about two years and officials have just begun planning, involves tearing down Tawes Hall’s Ulrich Recital Hall and instead

Hey, Mr. DJ Junior co-owns his own entertainment company BY MARY CLARE FISCHER Staff writer

On weekdays, junior Jordan Rich mostly spends his time in class or hanging out with friends. On weekends, he parties — working the crowd and rocking out to whatever music thumps from the speakers. Yet Rich, a government and politics major, is not the student who stumbles up to a satellite house and pays $5 to join the scene. In fact, others pay him to, essentially, throw the party for them.

Rich is the co-owner of Escapist Entertainment, which he describes as a “DJ and videography services company” that does everything from creating set lists to fully producing concerts for a variety of organizations. “I can do an event with four lights or I can bring in 25 feet of aluminum trussing and fly things,” Rich said. “You know, you can just go crazy. The sky’s the limit.” Escapist Entertainment’s

Student creates website to track down cheapest textbooks available Site generates list based on student’s courses that semester BY STEVEN RUIZ For The Diamondback

As a junior business major, Matthew Ellis should supposedly be concerned with making himself a fortune — not saving others a fortune on their textbooks.

But a few months ago, Ellis jumped at the chance to bring one Yale University student’s business idea to the campus and create books@umd, a website that helps students find the cheapest textbook options available. Books@yale — a website launched

by Yale University junior computer science major Sean Haufler for his campus — served as the model for Ellis’ site, which can be found at booksatumd.com. The site generates a book list based on the courses the

Ready for the big leagues Junior starts as Orioles’ ball girl Friday BY ERIN EGAN Senior staff writer

Emily Bolton will soon have a new jersey to hang next to her Terrapins club softball uniform — this one from the Baltimore Orioles. Bolton, a junior elementary education major who has played outfield for the Terps for three years, will join the Orioles this Friday as a ball girl. She is one of five people to win the honor for the upcoming season after edging out 45 other hopefuls at Camden Yards

during the grueling tryout process. “I grew up watching Cal Ripken Jr., and I’ve always loved watching baseball,” Bolton said. “This is my dream job.” Bolton, a Hagerstown native will work the foul line for the Orioles, fielding foul balls and handing them over to children in the crowd. However, she and the other ball girls and boys will also be expected to cheerlead, schmooze with fans and coordinate
