Williams says goodbye after 22 years coaching Thousands fill Comcast to see an emotional Williams BY CHRIS ECKARD Senior staff writer

For more than two decades, Gary Williams coached the Terrapin men’s basketball team with a fervor for the game he has known since he was 5 years old. Few showed more intensity than Williams, who screamed at players and coaches on the bench, ranted at referees and sweated through his suit. Many saw only that side of him. But Friday’s press conference to announce his retirement after 22 years as Terp coach showed just how much Williams means to the program and this university — and just how much they mean to him.

Walking onto the Comcast Center court before thousands of supporters, Williams uncorked his trademark, right-handed fist pump and joined university President Wallace Loh and Athletics Director Kevin Anderson on a stage flanked by the trophies his teams had won. Tears welled in his eyes and his lips trembled as fans chanted his name and stood in adoration. Williams, the man behind 668 career wins and a national championship, was finally saying goodbye to the university he loved, saying, “It’s the right time.” He paused several times during his speech to

After receiving housing requests from incoming freshmen, the Resident Life Department offered an additional 200 students on-campus housing last week. In past years, students who were on Resident Life’s waitlist — including transfer students, those who missed the April 1 registration deadline and students who already live off-campus — typically did not receive an on-campus housing slot. About 200 on the 700person long waitlist were given a spot on the campus, and the remaining 500 will hear back by the end of August, according to Resident Life officials. “We’re working toward giving as many students as possible housing on campus because we know that students that do [live on the campus] are

DVD rental program to expand online

Despite brief rainstorm, 8,000 turn out to hear Nelly perform at Art Attack Staff writer

When Nelly took the Art Attack stage a few minutes before 9 p.m. on Friday, he shouted to the crowd, “Are you ready to party?” The crowd, which had grown antsy after waiting through a 40-minute rain delay, burst into overwhelming applause, and the energy hardly let up until Nelly finished about an hour later. It was a fitting way to begin the occasionally raucous main act of

Hornbake’s free service adds titles BY LAUREN REDDING AND MARIA ROMAS Senior staff writers

A free student-founded, librarysponsored DVD rental program that has grown to more than 1,100 titles during the semester will allow users to search, rate and reserve movies on an interactive website due in the fall. Last semester, two seniors launched UMDVD — whose discs in Hornbake Library are available for three days to all students, faculty and staff with a university ID number — in November with $12,000 from the Student Government Association, the University Library System and other sources, compiling the program’s collection of used DVDs from CDepot and other outlets. “It serves academic purposes as well as entertainment,” said senior history major Dylan Winslow, one of the program’s founders. “There are definitely certain things Netflix [and other online movie players] have and vice

the 28th Art Attack, the annual concert put on by Student Entertainment Events. Playing for an audience of 8,000, Nelly barreled through a collection of his biggest hits, including “Party People,” “Dilemma” and “Just a Dream,” only rarely pausing between songs. “College is a high-energy place. People ready to get rocking,” Nelly said during a post-show interview with The Diamondback, explaining how he chose his set list. “It’s a little

Moving on as a model citizen Senior named one of top females for research, leadership BY KELLY FARRELL Staff writer

MengMeng Xu recently won the university’s Sally Sterling Byrd Award. JEREMY KIM/THE DIAMONDBACK

As she rides out the tail end of a full scholarship to this university, biochemistry and economics major MengMeng Xu just added another award to her already overflowing resumé, recognized as this year’s female senior who exemplified model citizenship and advanced the university. But Xu stressed that her four years

as an undergraduate student have been more about giving back to the university community than what she can get out of it. On May 1, the university honored Xu with the Sally Sterling Byrd Award, a citizenship prize for women, noting her scholarship, leadership and cancer research as reasons she was chosen, but Xu said her efforts were more about finding herself than bolstering her resumé.

“College is sort of just realizing who you are as a person and what’s important to you,” Xu said. “A lot of people are going through college just to get degrees, but what I’ve learned about myself and the potential that both I and everyone around me has is really amazing.” Xu said the Byrd award was the highlight of a long list of distinctions
