University starts over on East Campus

Site of Book Exchange to be converted into housing Property under contract to be sold to developers BY ALICIA MCCARTY Staff writer

The Maryland Book Exchange property is under contract to be sold to a developer that hopes to convert the site into a student housing high-rise, the first in that area of College Park. The Book Exchange would likely be able to remain on the ground floor of the new student apartment building, the developer said, but city

officials said it could be temporarily displaced during the construction process. Ilya Zusin, a local developer who attended this university, is partnering with Josef Mittlemann, a New York developer and a professor at Brown University, to redevelop the site, Zusin said. Zusin would not discuss specifics of his building plans — citing a confidentiality agreement

with the seller of the property — but District 2 City Councilman Bob Catlin said the developers had told the city they planned to build 300 student housing apartment units, which would likely mean 600 to 700 beds. Zusin said the property’s redevelopment was important for the city and university.

The university is abandoning years of planning work on its massive East Campus development, starting over with a new developer to come up with a design for the mixed-use project that can be built more gradually. The university and a new developer will now begin with a modest redevelopment of a small portion of the project’s 38-acre area, and it will be designed to expand over time to include more property and amenities depending on the market and community input, according to Ann Wylie, the university vice president for administrative affairs.

the two false alarms were weather related and were most likely triggered by power fluctuations that occurred due to the strong storms. Power was restored within two hours. There was also an actual fire in Commons 3 earlier Sunday, well before the storm, when an elevator belt ignited at about 2:30 a.m., University Police spokesman Paul Dillon said. A resident assistant noticed smoke coming

A Best Buy electronics store will be opening in northern College Park on Sept. 10, moving into a space in the College Park Marketplace shopping center between Shoppers Food Warehouse and The Home Depot. Best Buy had been looking for a space in the College Park area for several years, according to officials at NAI Michael, the Lanham-based firm that owns the shopping center at Route 1 and Cherry Hill Road, and found room when the Linens ’n Things chain went out of business and vacated the spot. Other companies were interested in moving into that space, Michael Isen, an NAI Michael vice president, said, but his firm decided Best Buy was the best fit for the shopping center. It will “provide the students with an opportunity to shop at a first class retailer” without having to

Despite power outages, severe thunderstorms largely spare campus Fire alarms send students into rain; woman in northern College Park dies in storm BY ALICIA MCCARTY Staff writer

Sunday afternoon’s violent thunderstorms knocked out power in the South Campus Commons and University Courtyards, and fire alarms forced some Commons residents to evacuate into the rain, but university officials said the campus largely avoided weather-related damage and disruptions. Widespread power outages and road closures

TOMORROW’S WEATHER:

hit the Washington region, and a part-time university employee died Sunday on Rhode Island Avenue in northern College Park when a tree fell on her minivan. The storm front moved through College Park at about 3:30 p.m. and almost immediately cut power to the apartment buildings. Residents said fire alarms sounded in Commons 5 and 6 when the electricity went off — both false alarms. Mark Brady, the chief spokesperson for the Prince George’s County Fire Department, said
