putting politics aside, a matter of equality About 200 students, state, local officials gather to rally support for same-sex marriage By Jenny Hottle Staff writer For Kevin Hollander, the issue of same-sex marriage is more than a question on the November ballot and more personal than a fight for civil rights. The junior marketing and psychology major said he has known he was gay since he was about 10 years old. It wasn’t until he was in ninth grade that he revealed his sexuality, after his sister came out to him. So on Thursday afternoon, joined by his parents Bob and Lori, Hollander and about 200 students gathered in the Nyumburu Amphitheater with state elected officials, including U.S. Sen. Ben Cardin (D-Md.), to rally support for marriage equality. A bill granting same-sex couples the right to marry passed in the state legislature in February, but Republican lawmakers succeeded in gathering thousands of signatures to put the issue before voters, stating marriages should exist only between a man and a woman under the traditional definition of the institution.

USM names new UMUC president Acting President Javier Miyares takes helm By Quinn Kelley Senior staff writer Javier Miyares, the new president of the University of Maryland, University College, has been to his share of college graduations. But one moment from a UMUC graduation ceremony in Germany has stuck with the state’s first-ever Latino college president over the last several months as he settles into his role. A young woman approached him at the ceremony and said she never imagined a Latino president

presiding over her graduation. “One day, I want to be like you and be a college president,” she told him. Miyares, who served as acting president after former President Susan Aldridge abruptly left her post in February after six years at the helm, was named the college’s president Oct. 1 by the University System of Maryland’s Board of Regents. Several faculty members said questions about Aldridge’s leave have been left unanswered over the last few months. However, The Washington See miyares , Page 3

Drawing up an appetite Dining Services turns to design students to spruce up marketing By Bradleigh Chance Staff writer Several design students will soon be turning a trained eye on one of the most visible departments on the campus, Dining Services, to help staff draw up a more appetizing marketing strategy. Walking through the dining halls, students can see an eclectic mix of designs at work — neon
lights pull students toward stations at North and South Campus dining halls; a chair is mounted on the wall next to Jalapeño Grill; a butter churner sits above the Commons Shop freezer. But with the help of fresh-eyed designers, the department’s website, posters and fliers may soon receive a facelift, Dining Services spokesman Bart Hipple said. The department plans to remodel office space in the South Campus Dining Hall to give hired design students an im-
proved resource center for revamping the department’s image. The main goal of the new initiative is to market Dining Services as a brand and build awareness about their healthy food options, sustainability undertakings, menu variety and hours and locations, Hipple said. While the department will make two initial hires — one graphic artist and one student to aid in communication and See design, Page 2

Engineering students take on project in Sierra Leone Madieu Williams Foundation engineering students bring village solar-powered lighting By Sandra Müller For The Diamondback For years, if it was a cloudy day in the small western Sierra Leone community of Calaba Town, elementary school students would learn in a dark classroom. But Washington Redskins safety and university alumnus Madieu Williams aimed to change that. Almost three years after donating $2 million to the university to create the Madieu Williams Center for Global Health Initiative, a project to provide solar-powered

lighting to the village school is complete. The project was in line with a goal Sierra Leone native Williams carried since he was young, said Dahlia Levin, the Madieu Williams Foundation executive director. Before leaving the country for Prince George’s County at the age of 9, Williams promised his mother he would help his home country if he ever became successful, said civil and environmental engineering professor David Lovell.
