BALTIMORE – In his second race against the same opponent in less than a decade, Gov. Martin O’Malley (D) was re-elected last night — a win the governor chalked up to state voters’ approval of the job he has been doing in Annapolis the last four years. O’Malley celebrated his triumph over former Gov. Bob Ehrlich (R) in a packed ballroom at the American Visionary Art Museum last night, where supporters cheered, danced, clapped and chanted “O-Mal-

TIMONIUM – Striking a starkly different tone than in 2006, former Gov. Bob Ehrlich (R) calmly conceded the gubernatorial race to Gov. Martin O’Malley last night amid a crowd of disappointed supporters. Although a crowd of about 250 supporters at the Maryland State Fairgrounds’ Exhibition Hall balked at the early predictions of O’Malley’s victory and continued to boo the results even as Ehrlich

Bucking the national trend of Republican gains that cost the Democratic Party the U.S. House of Representatives, this state’s two Democratic leaders in both the House and U.S. Senate were soundly re-elected yesterday. Sen. Barbara Mikulski (D) retained her seat, as did university alumnus and District 5 Rep. Steny Hoyer (D). Mikulski will enter her fifth term as senator next year, securing the title of longest-serving female U.S. senator, while Hoyer will enter his 16th term representing the Fifth Congressional District, which encompasses this university, though he will lose his title of House majority leader. By this morning, major news organizations had called the Republican recapture of the House — a fate many Democrats denied up until the last minute. As of midnight, Republicans had passed their minimum gain of 39
