six essentials for a safe night out
By Sasha Allen | @sashaa_allen | Staff writer
Going out as a college student is fun and a big aspect of the college experience for many, but staying safe is just as important. To have a fun and safe night, here is a list of some items that may be necessary for anyone who enjoys the college nightlife.
1. Pepper Spray
Pepper spray is a must-have, especially in emergency situations at the bars or walking home at night. Pepper sprays can come as keychains that have safety locks and are easy to use in any situation.
2. Cup Condoms
Cup condoms are a precautionary essential that help keep drinks safe. Even if you‘re always holding your drink, cup condoms are reusable covers that protect your drink from being tampered with. They can be easily ordered online and the Student Government Association passed a bill in March that will help provide resources and materials to students to prevent sexual assault, including cup condoms.
3. Drink Test Cards
Drink test cards are easy to carry in your pockets and test for various chemical compounds in your drink. If you aren’t sure if someone has messed with your drink, the test cards can tell you if your drink is safe to consume.
4. Drink Test Nail Polish
For people who don’t want to carry around drink test cards, there is nail polish that can detect common date-rape drugs, such as roofies. Just paint your nails with the polish and dip a finger in your drink to test it. If your drink has been spiked, the nail polish will change color.
5. Phone Wallet
Phone wallets are a really easy way to keep your credit card, debit card, ID, dorm swipe or apartment keys and money all in one place. As long as you have your phone, you’ll have everything you need to fund your night out!
6. Keys and Phone
Although this might seem obvious, it is important to know where your phone and keys are whenever you go out. Nights can be unpredictable, and always knowing what pocket your keys and phone are in is necessary to having a fun, safe and stress-free night.

Impress your friends with these UMD inspired mocktails
By Sofia Appolonio | Staff writer
The spring semester is coming to an end and with that, it’s time to start thinking about summer plans. For many, drink and cocktail recipes are at the forefront of summer party planning. And if drinking isn’t your thing or you’re underage, no worries! Here are some fun mocktail recipes inspired by our campus and the iconic state of Maryland. Whether they’re paired with alcohol or not, they taste delicious!
The Mockeldin
Is there a drink called The McKeldin? There should be. This tasty concoction will pick you up the same way a study sesh at McKeldin Library can. Take some apple juice and sparkling water for a refreshing bubbly taste and infuse with cinnamon sticks for a little hint of fall in the summer. For a bit of an extra kick in this drink, pour a teaspoon of Tabasco and Tajín seasoning on top for a spicy kick.
The Foxtudo
Personally, a “foxy” drink wouldn’t be
complete without a bit of cherry. So in honor of our beloved campus fox, this drink is a cherry and lime margarita mix –– made with Coke, grenadine, lime zest and margarita mix. Blend with ice until the drink comes to a smoothie texture. Interested in adding more? Add a splash of vanilla syrup into the blender for a sweet ending.
The Chesapeake Chaser
Are you still wondering what to do with that Old Bay shaker you got in your welcome package? I got you. Feel like you’re back on the waters of downtown Annapolis with the Chesapeake Chaser. Begin with a base of ginger ale and lemonade and then cut up lemon slices to dip into the seasoning. Pour a bit more Old Bay on top. And if you’re still not getting the flavor you need, add in some extra paprika and lemon zest.
The Mighty Sound of Maryland
Do you remember that feeling of walking around the campus on a frigid winter
day with the wind biting at your face and hands? Do you remember trying to get to class as quickly as possible and yet your usual route was blocked by construction? I do. I want to help you remember this experience with this recipe. Grab some orange popsicles and put an excessive amount into your blender with cranberry juice and Sprite. Blend for about five minutes, or until you fear for the life of your blender and take a sip of this refreshingly cold drink.
The South Campus
As a resident of North Campus, I look forward to my walks to South Campus for my classes, as the buildings and landscape become more aesthetically pleasing. This drink is a final ode to walking around South Campus during the spring. The base is grapefruit juice for a light pink spring color. Mix this with mint syrup, mint leaves and sparkling water for a fun, bubbly taste. Still want more? Throw in a bit of agave syrup for a naturally sweet addition.

These late-night food places are College Park tradition
By Monica Godnick | @GodnickMonica | Assistant special projects editor
Sometimes being at a bar or a party and socializing isn’t even the most exciting part of the night. Nothing can describe the exhilaration of getting something to grub on after an action-packed night.
Maybe you’re debriefing the night with your friends while munching on some fries or a sandwich. And because hunger is the best sauce, everything tastes better too.
These top five options definitely satisfy those huge cravings that creep up at the end of the night, and most of them are established College Park go-tos.
Marathon Deli
(V)
- Vegetarian options
Whether it’s Marathon fries with classic Marathon sauce or a gyro, Marathon is more than a late-night snack. It’s University of Maryland tradition. Right on Route 1, across from College Park City Hall and Cornerstone Grill & Loft, you’ll see more and more students trickle in on weekend nights after hours of partying or just hanging out. It’s so popular, it almost becomes another afterparty after midnight.
It’s open until 3 a.m. Monday to Saturday and 1 a.m. on Sundays.
Tokoa Cheesesteaks
Although relatively new, these cheesesteaks, fries and drinks are all the buzz. Its Lo’Mac cheesesteak includes mouthwatering cheese bites that simply hit the spot when you’re hungry after a night out. And it has a chicken sub dedicated to the university — the Terp Chicken Sub — which has bread toasted in garlic butter, chicken, provolone cheese and ranch.
Not to mention, its fresh strawberry lemonade or bubbly Jarritos bottles that pair perfectly with this late-night feast.
It’s open until 1 a.m. Thursday through Saturday, and 9 p.m. Sunday through Wednesday.
D.P. Dough (V)
This one’s right in one of Terrapin Row’s buildings! DP Dough re-opened in 2022. And it’s simply hard to resist snatching those crunchy, cheesy calzones on your way home after a long night out. Beyond the endless options of calzones, it also has tots and stixs. And if you have more of a sweet tooth, its sugary cinnamon stix are definitely worth the try.
It’s open until 3 a.m. every day.
Ledo Pizza (V)
Ledo cannot be missed since it opened its first restaurant in Adelphi. It’s mostly known for its square-shaped pizza slices and home-feel restaurant. But, have you had its boneless, crispy chicken wings with ranch or blue cheese? Give them a try.
Ledo is also a chill place to have drinks at night while you eat, if you’re looking for a more sit-down vibe while going out.
It’s open until 2 a.m. Thursday to Saturday.
Pizza Kingdom (V)
This one is another university tradition. It’s just one of those things you have to do at night before you graduate. The biggest appeal is you get huge slices of a normal pizza all to yourself.
But if you’re not in the pizza mood, its mozzarella sticks and garlic bread are also very popular. And if, for some strange reason, late at night you are craving a salad, it has different salad and pasta options for you to munch on.
It stays open until 2 a.m. on Thursdays, and 2:30 a.m. Fridays and Saturdays.

Enhance your pre-game with these songs
#1 “Invincible” by Pop Smoke
Pop Smoke is a must-have on any pregame playlist and why not one of his most popular songs? The track’s high energy and infectious beat make it an excellent choice, as does Pop Smoke’s intense delivery of the lyrics. His unique voice and flow bring a certain gravitas to the track. “Invincible” has all the elements of a great party song.
#2 “Wants and Needs” by Drake ft. Lil Baby
Looking into Drake’s library, it’s difficult to choose just one song to feature on this list. But, a top choice has to be “Wants and Needs” in his collaboration with Lil Baby. While the track’s smooth production is well-suited for more relaxed settings, the signature deliveries from Drake and Lil Baby make it a great addition to a party playlist for calmer moments of the night. The two artists complement each other well, with Drake’s introspective and melodic style contrasting with Lil Baby’s more aggressive and trap-influenced flow. This creates an engaging listening experience for any party.
#3 “Shots” by LMFAO ft. Lil Jon
The quintessential party song has to be LMFAO’s “Shots” featuring Lil Jon. “Shots” is an older song, released in 2009, but its high-energy beat and catchy lyrics deliver the essence of how you should feel at a party. The lyrics could be deemed as cheesy, but its social relevance and iconic chorus transcends any argument of its unoriginality. Overall, the song is fun and creates a carefree vibe that will be a surefire hit on any party playlist.
#4 “GATTI” by JACKBOYS, Pop Smoke and Travis Scott
To only feature Pop Smoke once in a pregame playlist is almost impossible — especially when there’s an iconic collaboration with Travis Scott. “GATTI” and its hard-hitting beat paired with its intense and heavy production are perfect for getting hyped up. Travis Scott’s lyrics about living life to the fullest and enjoying the moment, along with a guest verse from Pop Smoke, add to the overall excitement and energy of the track.

#7 “The Hills (RL Grime Remix)” by The Weeknd and RL Grime
The brilliance of The Weeknd’s “The Hills” is not taken away in this remix. It takes an already popular track and gives it a fresh sound that appeals to fans of both grime and R&B music. The remix features an aggressive and hard-hitting beat that’s perfect for getting people excited and dancing. The addition brings a new dimension to the song, providing a unique and exciting blend of different music styles. The lyrics are also powerful and emotionally charged, adding to the overall intensity and impact of the track.
#8 “Ric Flair Drip” by Offset, Metro Boomin and 21 Savage
One of the most iconic trio collabs in rap is 21 Savage, Offset and Metro Boomin’s “Ric Flair Drip.” The song has a fast-paced, trap-influenced instrumental that’s perfect for getting people psyched. Offset’s catchy hook and use of ad-libs and repetitive lyrics add to the overall catchiness and memorability of the song. No party is complete without blasting this rap classic.
