LAWN HOUSE 1 INVERFORTH HOUSE Lawn House is a breath-taking mixture of elegant, extravagant period decoration and the ultimate in 21st century luxury. The house is part of London’s forgotten mansion, Inverforth House, a Grade II listed building adjoining Hampstead Heath, and its history underlines the painstaking care with which one of London’s most spectacular homes was created – and has now been re-created in the form of nine magnificent residences. Formerly known as The Hill, Inverforth House dates back to the 17th century. From 1809 to 1895 it was owned by members of the Hoare family, Quaker bankers and stout defenders of the Heath against attempts to build on it. In 1904, the house was bought by William Lever, later Lord Leverhulme, the founder of Unilever plc and then one of the richest men in the world. Lord Leverhulme gradually remodelled the mansion, adding two new wings to display his art collection and building a ballroom under the terrace. He surrounded the landscaped gardens with a beautiful pergola and had whole suites decorated in different architectural styles - including Adam, Jacobean and Regency - with no expense spared on materials or craftsmanship. When Lord Leverhulme died in 1924, the house was bought by shipping magnate Lord Iverforth, who lived there until his death in 1956. Since then it has been lovingly restored and divided into some of the most spacious and spectacular new homes that have ever come on to the market. Inverforth House stands adjacent to Hampstead Heath, with the village itself just half a mile away. Surrounded by 800 acres of green open heathland, there are magnificent views over West Heath to the rest of London. Hampstead is still the most detached and distinctive of London’s villages. Today, with its fashionable shops and restaurants, historic pubs, galleries and antique dealers, it is an endlessly fascinating place in which to live - by day or night.
