Local Magazines Published by Glos Directories - connecting local businesses with local people
Dear Reader, Christmas and January sales have come and gone and the mild start to January was lovely, albeit a little wet at times. As we head into February, we have Valentine's Day to look forward to. Many see Valentine's Day as a commercial gimmick and the first stumbling block for anyone who had a diet-related New Year’s resolution! Whether you celebrate this day or not, I think it is a great way to remind ourselves to spread a bit of love to those around you. Also the 14th falls within half term so it provides parents or grandparents with a great theme for doing some arts and crafts or baking with the children! At the start of the year, committees and fete organisers get together to put dates in the diary for future events. Please remember to let us know what you are planning and we might be able to publish your event in the magazine and share it on our social media pages for you. Happy Valentine’s Day to all our readers and thank you for supporting the local businesses within our magazines! Best wishes, Vicky Muller

Gloucestershire businesswoman who swapped teaching for dog care collects national award A Gloucestershire businesswoman who swapped teaching for dog care has been rewarded for her success establishing her dog boarding business. Cheltenham-based Alexis only left a teaching career in London just over a year ago for life in the countryside. Shortly after welcoming her new Beagle puppy Brea into her family, she launched her branch of Wagging Tails in January 2016, offering dog owners a homebased alternative to kennels in the GL postcode area. She found her first Dog Carer in a matter of weeks with bookings following almost immediately. Since then, Alexis' business has gone from strength to strength and she picked up the 2016 Wagging Tails Brand Builder Award ahead of 19 other branches in the network. At Wagging Tails, dogs stay in the family homes of Dog Carers who are checked firstly by Alexis and Brea and subsequently inspected and licensed by their local Councils. Talking about how the business works and why she feels she has been so successful Alexis stated, ‘Owners seem to respond to the fact that the welfare of the dogs is right at the heart of what we do and how we work. We don't cut corners and we spend a lot of time speaking to each of our owners and finding out about their dogs to ensure that we board them with the right Dog Carer. This means the dogs have a great holiday and our Carers get dogs they will enjoy coming to stay with them. If we don't have a suitable Carer, we don't take the booking.’ With the business still in its first year, Alexis is very much looking forward to continuing the development of her Wagging Tails branch. ‘I love running the business, I really love being able to work with my puppy Brea and it is great to speak to and meet all the dog lovers I come into contact with on a daily basis. My focus at the moment is finding new Dog Carers to help me meet the demand we have for the service. Being a Carer is very much like being a doggy Grandparent; it gives you the opportunity to enjoy all the benefits of having dogs around the house without the full commitment of ownership’. Lisa Suswain, Director at Wagging Tails, described Alexis as, ‘A pleasure to work with. Alexis is diligent, polite and has very high attention to detail. It is no surprise that the feedback we have received from her owners and Dog Carers has been so overwhelmingly positive and the success of Wagging Tails in Gloucestershire is a testament to the hard work that she has put into developing the business’.
If you would like to find out more about boarding your dog with Wagging Tails or are interested in joining her team of Dog Carers and welcoming guest dogs for a holiday, you can contact Alexis on 01242 681 488 or email gl@waggingtailsuk.co.uk www.waggingtailsuk.co.uk/gl

Parenting Time and Sanity Savers by Kate Duggan
Tips and tricks to make your life easier, from washable nail polish to a booster seat that can fit in a school bag. Monday morning panics 8-8.30am is often a rather stressful period in my house. Arguments over brushing teeth (my son) compete with tears over forgotten homework (my daughter). One thing I do have sorted is making it easy for them to find their uniform so they can get dressed. I use a rubber band to attach two clothes hangers together, one of which is the type with clips. Pants get hung from one clip, tights or socks from the other, and the rest of the uniform goes on the other hanger. Simple. My next mission is to teach them to put their PJs under their pillow, rather than dumping them on the floor. We’ve been working on that one for a while now, with no luck. Hair brushing is a source of tantrums the world over. The Wet Brush may save a fair few tears (theirs and yours). It’s the best detangling brush I’ve found yet and can be used on wet or dry hair. £11.99 from www. lookfantastic.com. Kids love nail polish. Schools don’t love it quite so much. If (like me) you’re hopeless at
remembering to remove your child’s nail varnish on a Sunday evening, you might want to try Nailmatic Kids Nail Polish. Not only is it toxin-free and available in several childfriendly shades, but it can be washed off with warm soapy water. Powder-pink glitter is a favourite in my house, although my son prefers Rio Green. £6.95, www.cuckooland.com. Days out From emergency wees in the park to dropped dummies, children just attract germs. Hand sanitising gels are handy but not always that child-friendly. Aquaint, on the other hand, is 100% natural and formulated without strong chemicals, preservatives or alcohol. It kills 99.9% of bacteria, but is completely safe, so can be used on everything from hands to drinks bottles. £2.49 - £4.99 from Boots, Mothercare and other retailers. Children seem to have an innate ability to lose things. If you can’t be bothered to spend hours sewing on name tags, try Tinyme labels. They’re printed with your child’s name and a design of your choice.
The Essentials Pack (from £24) comes with more than 200 labels, including iron-on labels for clothes, and different sized stickers for shoes, pencil cases and so on. They’re designed to stay on through washing, tumble drying and general dayto-day use. Tinyme also make personalised bags, books, drinks bottles and a ton of other items, handy if your child is particularly prone to misplacing their possessions. Play dates After-school playdates are great at keeping the kids out of your hair, but it’s all too easy to forget to swap car seats with the other parents. The new Mifold (main picture) can help to make sure you’re never again caught out with three kids and only two booster seats. Unlike traditional booster seats, Mifold adjusts the seatbelt to fit the child, rather than raising the child up to fit the belt. That means it’s far smaller than a car seat; small enough to keep in a glove box or even your child’s school bag. It can be adjusted to fit children aged from around four to 12, and it meets the highest legal standards for child restraint systems. £49.95 from John Lewis.

Cricket – at the heart of your Community Woodmancote Cricket Club is nearly 80 years old. A lot has happened in that time; a world war, huge social and political changes, technological advancements, space travel and the growth of Bishops Cleeve and Woodmancote villages from 600 people to 15,000! WCC has been here throughout, fulfilling a vital role in the community. WCC runs teams from age 9 upwards. The skills that cricket develops are beneficial to personal development; learning patience and developing communication skills as well as the discipline of attending training/matches all help with confidence and personal achievement, not just in sport. Practice Sessions start in February; soft ball Kwik Cricket for newcomers and hard ball coaching for more experienced players. New players are very welcome. WCC have been working with the charity Chance to Shine in Woodmancote, Grangefield and Bishops Cleeve Primary Academy for the past two years. An Inter-School Tournament (The Eddie Wilson Cup) in June rounds off the coaching provided by WCC. New players now join the club having had a taste of cricket and the runners-up
finish by our U11 team last season shows that talent is coming through! WCC runs three teams on Saturdays at a level to suit any new players reading this. The 1st XI play County League Div 1, 2nds County Div 6 and 3rds in the Cheltenham League. New players are welcome; nets start in February. The club is excited to be launching a Girls Section. With social soft ball games building to a goal of a hard ball competitive Women’s team in the future; the club is interested in talking to anyone keen to play the game, coach or help organise the team. Interestingly a report has been released by the University of Exeter showing that volunteering lowered stress levels, improved physical and mental health in the majority of those involved with volunteering. Cricket cannot survive without volunteers. Scorers, umpires, coaches, tea ladies (or men) and ground staff are all volunteers at WCC and the club welcomes anyone else who has the time (and skills) to help; free training courses are available for anyone wishing to learn a new skill! Community resources are no longer subsidised from
central government and increasing costs mean that sports clubs like WCC are constantly applying for grants from funding bodies and local government which is a fiercely competitive process! The club is lucky to have some awesome sponsors but we are always looking out for businesses who want to help us. Maybe you could be the sponsor of the new Girls Section? If you are interested in playing, volunteering or sponsoring please get in touch – we survive because of community backing and local involvement and long may that continue. Cake and Bake Raspberry & Vanilla Panna Cotta These delightful creamy desserts make the perfect Valentine treat!
Ingredients:
1.
To make the raspberry jelly hearts, line a small 6cm square dish with cling film. Soak the gelatine in a shallow dish of cold water for 2-3 minutes. Heat the raspberry puree in a small pan with 1 tbsp water. Remove the gelatine leaf from the water and stir into the hot puree until dissolved. Pour into the lined dish and leave to cool, then chill in the fridge until set.
2.
When the jelly is set, use a small heart-shaped cookie cutter to stamp out 4 heart shapes and place each one in the base of a small heart shaped ramekin dish (each about 150ml capacity).
3.
To make the panna cotta, place the cream, vanilla extract, lemon rind and caster sugar in a pan and bring slowly to the boil. Remove from the heat.
4.
Meanwhile, soak the gelatine leaves as in step 1. Remove from the water and stir into the hot cream until completely dissolved. Leave to cool for 30 minutes. Remove the strips of lemon rind and divide the mixture between two bowls. Stir a few drops of pink food colouring into one bowl. Spoon the two mixtures into the ramekins, to give two with colouring and two without. Chill for 6 hours or overnight until set.
5.
To serve, cut and trim the halved brownies to make four heart shapes the same size as the ramekins. Dip each ramekin into a bowl of hot water for a few seconds to release the panna cotta then turn each one out onto a heart-shaped brownie. Decorate with fresh raspberries.
• 75g fresh raspberries, pureed
• 1 sheet leaf gelatine PANNA COTTA • 600ml double cream
• 2 tsp vanilla extract • 2 pared strips lemon rind • 50g caster sugar • 2 sheets leaf gelatine • Few drops pink food colouring

Every Monday evening during the season is club night where members can practice, receive coaching, play friendly matches and/or just socialise at the club or in the licensed bar. Wednesday mornings are allocated for club members to play friendly matches and to get to know the other members. Whenever the green is not allocated to maintenance, matches or club activities, it is available for members to use for practice or to receive organised coaching. On 23rd April 2017 at 2.00pm, Overbury Bowling Club will have an Open Day to welcome all those who would like to try playing bowls. While people can just arrive on the day, a prior contact to help plan for the numbers would be appreciated. Refreshments will be available in the clubhouse and bar. New members are always welcome and all ages, both young and senior, can enjoy this very social sporting activity. The club has both equipment and qualified coaches to get the inexperienced up and running quickly and to help iron out those annoying problems which can affect one's game. For more information, please contact Overbury Bowling Club at info@overburybowling.net or one of the club officials listed on www.overburybowling.net

now, he's locked in the price for a year. So, the sooner you act, the more you're likely to save. 3. Check multi-car policies if you've more than one car in the home. A few insurers offer special discounts if you have more than one car in the home – but comparison sites can’t include these deals, so do it manually. www.Admiral.com Multicar gives discounts of up to 25%, depending on how many cars you insure. You can also get discounts by linking the household standalone policies with Churchill, Direct Line and Privilege. The savings here could be huge. Equally, they can be a rip off; it’s about trial and error. 4. Comprehensive cover may be cheaper than third party. Bizarrely, merely selecting comprehensive means some insurers see you as a lower risk, and it lowers the price, so always check comprehensive too if you want the cheapest. 5. Adding an extra driver could cost less. Again, counter-intuitively adding another person to the policy can bring down your premium, as the average risk is reduced. It’s especially strong if you're a young driver adding a responsible older driver, but can work for others too as Bouncybubbles told me: "Quoted £900 from £500 previous year. By comparing
then adding my husband I got it down to £298."
or late at night, it can work well too.
6. Legitimately tweak your job title. You can't claim to be the Chancellor if you're a pole dancer (or viceversa), but many people have wide ranging roles. So by tweaking your job description you might find your quote is lower. Like @RPJ_Webster93 who tweeted: "@martinslewis Thanks to your 'reword job title' tip my car insurance quote reduced by £500." He legitimately changed his job title from 'council worker' to 'civil servant - cleric'.
9. Got special circumstances and struggling? Speak to a broker. If your circumstances aren’t normal, getting insurance can be tough. Often getting an insurance broker to find a bespoke policy for you can beat comparison sites. See www.biba.org.uk/findinsurance/ 10. Can you get cashback. Once you’ve found your cheapest policy check cashback websites like Quidco.com and TopCashback.co.uk to see if you can get any money back on the policy you’ve chosen if you buy it via them - this can be over £50, so is often worth it. Yet don’t let the cashback tail wag the dog. Choose the right policy first, then see cashback as an added extra (as it isn’t 100% guaranteed). Martin Lewis is the Founder & Editor in Chief of Money Saving Expert. To join the 10 million people who get his Martin’s Money Tips weekly email, go to www. moneysavingexpert.com/ latesttip
7. Don’t ‘pay monthly’ – it doesn't exist. Insurers may call it paying monthly, but actually they loan you the year's cost and while a few are interest free, most charge often hideous interest. The worst offender I’ve seen charges up-to-93% APR interest. So, check and if it’s costly, pay upfront if you can. If not, try to get one of the many year-long-plus 0% credit cards. Just ensure you pay it off over the year, then there's no cost. 8. Consider installing a 'black box'. This device is the tech (officially called 'telematics') insurers put inside your car to monitor how you drive and when. It's especially useful for younger drivers facing hefty costs via other means, though if your mileage is limited and you don't drive at peak times

Caramelised
Onion & Goats’ Cheese Pizza Serves 4
Ready in 1 hour
This is a tasty alternative to the classic cheese and tomato pizza. Serve with a simple mixed green salad dressed with balsamic vinegar and olive oil.
Ingredients: • 3 tbsp olive oil, plus extra to drizzle • 2 large onions, peeled and thinly sliced • 2 tsp brown sugar • 2 x 145g packets pizza base mix • 2 tsp fresh chopped rosemary leaves, plus 1 tbsp small sprigs • 2 x 100g round goats’ cheeses, sliced • 5 cherry tomatoes, halved
TIP
Instead of the caramelised onions spread, the pizza base with sun-dried tomato paste then top with some cooked and drained spinach. Scatter over diced mozzarella cheese, grated parmesan cheese and some fresh chopped oregano.
Heat the olive oil in a large frying pan and add the onions. Fry over a gentle heat for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until softened. Add the sugar and fry for a further 10 minutes until golden brown. Leave to cool. Preheat the oven to 220C, Fan 200C, Gas Mark 7. Empty both sachets of the pizza base mix into a large bowl and stir in a large pinch of salt and the chopped rosemary leaves. Stir in 200ml hand-hot water and mix to a soft dough. Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for 5 minutes until smooth and elastic. Roll the dough out to a 30 x 45cm oblong. Place on a greased baking sheet and turn up the edges of the base. Spread the caramelised onions over the base, then top with the sliced goats’ cheese, cherry tomatoes and rosemary sprigs. Leave in a warm place for 10 minutes. Drizzle with olive oil and season with a little salt and lots of freshly ground black pepper. Bake for 15-20 minutes until the base is golden brown.

Cotswold bone The shop for dogs and dog lovers
Hello again furries and humans, So, following my article in the Bishop’s Cleeve Magazine before Christmas, the lovely humans have asked me to write another! (Mum is so proud of me!)
• Homemade, healthy and natural treats • Handmade collars, leads and accessories • Raw diet stockist • Official Kennel Club merchandise • Gifts for dog lovers Follow us on
This time I'm here to tell you humans how to make us furries feel loved on Valentine's Day! 1. Let us sleep with you - pleeeeeaaaaase! I don't know why you humans don't let us share the big bed (although I hear from some of my friends at daycare that they're allowed. I need to take this up with my mum). When we sleep we are vulnerable, so having you there makes us feel safe and that you're part of our pack! 2. Scratch behind our ears and rub our bellies. We have sensitive nerves behind our ears so helping us scratch them makes us feel all giddy. Apparently it's something to do with endorphins whatever they are. As for the belly rubs – we just like them! And if we're rolling over, it means we trust you to do a good job. 3. Talk to us. We may not always understand what you’re saying but we like the sound of your voice, providing you're not angry. We like to learn your commands and tone because we just want to please you. We like to look into your eyes too where we can see all your love for us. 4. Take us out. We love walks, especially when we don't have to wear a lead and we can run around like crazy; but we also like days out to tourist attractions and cafes, pubs and restaurants (especially the ones with lots of crumbs on the floor) with you humans too. As long as we're with you, we're happy. 5. Brush/groom us. Now I'm a smooth-haired miniature dachshund, so to be honest this doesn't really do it for me, but a lot of my furrier furry friends tell me they love having a good brush and some even like baths (I don't get it). If you can give us a little massage with it then ok, I'll take it. 6. Treats – obviously! I don't think I need to add anymore on this except we don't like your human chocolate! It makes us poorly and will ruin Valentine's for us worse than a bad oyster on a human date.
High Street, Winchcombe GL54 5LJ
Shop online or in-store www.cotswoldbone.com As well as these top tips, if you really want to spoil us a good meal and a new toy would make it the best Valentine's Day, or any day for that fact, ever! Before I go, I just wanted to give a little shout out to the shelter dogs. Not all furries are as lucky as us. Some of our brothers from other mothers, and sisters from other misters, are in the Cheltenham Animal Shelter. Mum took me there once and I wasn't allowed out of the car because I'm lucky enough to have a furever home. I could hear the other dogs talking and they all just want humans to love and to love them back. The shelter humans really do look after them but they want proper homes. So, if you have any room in your house and heart for a furry companion, and you want to make this Valentine's Day really special, please consider adopting a shelter dog; they'll love you on Valentine's Day and every other day for the rest of their lives! Best dash, mum just sat down so I need to get on her lap! Wishing you furries lots of kisses, treats, cuddles, toys and walks and love this Valentine’s Day! And humans, don't forget, our love for you is unconditional!

Back Seat Birth to Front Seat Driver My seventeen year-old daughter has just passed her driving test, so I was proud to see her set out on her first solo journey. For my peace of mind I would like her to take some advanced driving lessons (she’s learned to pass the driving test, now she needs to learn to drive) but pressure from Dad is not the way to introduce such a thing: she has to have her own “why” in order to want to take them. Hopefully she will soon. But that’s for the future. I relate this to you because of what caught my eye recently: it’s a light-hearted story concerning another similar aged driver. 17 years ago, the parents of Freya
Whitelaw were rushing in their Vauxhall Astra to the maternity hospital. Except Freya wouldn’t wait and Mrs Whitelaw had to be delivered of her on the back seat of the car. Luckily they had made it to the hospital car park, so staff assisted and both mother and baby were fine. Time passed and the Whitelaws kept their Astra as the family runabout. It’s over 19 years old now (and a bit creaky says Freya) but, about to take her driving test, Mum and Dad have passed it on to their daughter as her first car. I’m sure she will pass the driving test with ease and, hopefully, go on to increase her skills behind the wheel. After all, she has her “why” in the history of the car she is driving: she started her life in the back seat so would want to continue a long and safe one in the front. By Iain Betson

Banish Wi-Fi Woes Wireless networking, or Wi-Fi for short, is one of the best and worst technologies of all time. When it works, it’s brilliant; when it doesn’t, it’s infuriating. But solving Wi-Fi worries is often very simple. The most common problem is no signal or poor signal. That’s usually because you’re too far away from the router, or because there are obstacles between you and the router. Metal objects such as radiators are particularly bad, but older buildings with thick walls can be a problem too. The first step is to try moving the router somewhere else - the higher the better, because there are fewer obstacles the closer you get to the ceiling - but if that doesn’t work you could extend your network with a Wi-Fi extender. It picks up the signal from the router and re-broadcasts it, helping to reach places the router can’t.

Eating Disorders Awareness Week - 27th February to 5th March
Eating disorders affect over 725,000 people in the UK and one in five of those most seriously affected die prematurely through suicide or physical consequences. That’s why it’s essential we’re all aware of the dangers of eating disorders and our susceptibility to them. Forget the stereotypical teenage girl starving herself. There are several different eating disorders that can affect people of any age, gender or ethnicity. WhaT Causes eaTing DisorDers? Often, it’s a combination of genetic, psychological, environmental, social and biological factors. Risk factors are: • Bereavement or abuse. • Being criticised about weight, body shape or eating habits. • Intense stress. • Family history of addiction, depression or eating disorders. • Pressure to be slim from themselves, society or a career/hobby, e.g. dancing, sports. • Underlying issues such as anxiety, low self-esteem, perfectionism or obsessive personality. • Relationship issues. Types oF eaTing DisorDer anorexia nervosa Around 1 in 250 women and 1
in 2,000 men will experience anorexia, becoming preoccupied with weighing as little as possible via excessive exercise and/or starving themselves. It usually develops at age 16 or 17 but sometimes, as young as 7. Bulimia Bulimia sufferers alternate between binge eating and purging by inducing vomiting or using laxatives, and 90% are female. It’s more common than anorexia and usually develops at around 18 or 19. Binge eating disorder (BeD) BED affects around 5% of adults, compelling them to eat large amounts of food very rapidly. It affects both sexes equally, usually developing between 30 and 40 years old. eating Disorder not otherwise Specified (EDNOS) Some people may have some but not all of the symptoms of a specific eating disorder, so they receive an EDNOS diagnosis. Diagnosis anD TreaTmenT Doctors and healthcare professionals use internationally agreed criteria to diagnose eating disorders, normally using the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) or International Classification of Diseases (ICD). They ask patients about their weight, self-image and relationship with food. But how do you know someone needs to be referred for diagnosis? Often, people with eating disorders will be in denial or try to hide symptoms, but they may: • Skip meals or claim they’ve already eaten/will eat when they’re out. • Only eat tiny/low-calorie meals. • Claim they’re fat when they’re
a healthy weight/underweight. • Repeatedly weigh themselves/ study themselves in the mirror. • Cook large family meals yet eat little themselves. • Refuse to eat in public or become stressed when they do. • Use ‘pro-anorexia’ websites. If you suspect you or someone else has an eating disorder, get professional help immediately. Rapid treatment makes full recovery more likely and minimises the impact on the patient’s body and life. However, recovery can be lengthy and, like the disorders themselves, complex. Physical health is monitored while the disorder’s underlying causes are treated. This may involve: • Self-help books. • Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), aiming to change thinking and in turn, behaviour. • Interpersonal psychotherapy: a talking therapy focusing on relationship issues. • Dietary counselling. • Psychodynamic therapy or cognitive analytic therapy (CAT), focusing on how personality and life experiences influence thoughts and behaviour. • Family therapy, considering the eating disorder’s effects on them and their family. • Medication: often SSRI antidepressants (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors). support and more information: Beat (Beat eating Disorders) www.b-eat.co.uk/ For over-18s/those concerned about a child: 0345 634 1414 help@b-eat.co.uk For under-18s: Youth Helpline 0345 634 7650 fyp@b-eat.co.uk

Velvet Underground by Pippa Greenwood
They may be known as ‘velvet coated gentlemen’, but if you have a problem with moles in your garden, it is highly unlikely you will call them anything so polite! So what can you do if your lawn becomes decorated with mounds of finely turned soil, or if plants start to disappear beneath soil level as subsidence occurs within the flowerbed, or an entire row of vegetables is excavated from below? Moles can do a lot of damage to a lawn, largely because that fine soil acts as an excellent seedbed for weeds and can make the lawn surface slippery. Mole runs beneath your lawn, flowerbeds or vegetable plots can occasionally cause the plants to suffer from drought, as the soil is no longer in contact with the roots. Often, when the tunnels collapse subsidence occurs, and plants can literally fall over. Moles can sometimes be deterred by high-pitched sounds or vibrations. Try inserting children’s windmills over the mole infested areas, as the vibration that passes down these into the soil is said to send moles scampering away. Similarly, you can plunge glass bottles into the soil with the neck protruding. The noise
and vibrations created as the wind whistles over the mouth of the bottles may also discourage moles. Very smelly substances, such as mole smokes, can work against moles. These are like fireworks and, inserted into the run, produce unpleasant smoke. However, with these and other smelly deterrents, once the smell has subsided the mole may return. Traps are available from some garden centres or online stores. They must be correctly set and you must wear gloves as the moles will avoid the trap if they detect human scent. It is much more effective to employ a specialist mole catcher who is adept at trapping them and, since they often charge only on the basis of moles caught, it need not be too expensive a process either. Moles do eventually decide to go elsewhere, and although this does not imply that your garden will then remain free of moles, if the problem has been very bad one year it may not be quite so severe the next. Some say that the plant caper spurge (Euphorbia lathyrus) will deter moles and as it does seem to work for some gardeners and the plants are
fairly attractive it is worth giving it a try! Some gardeners report success with ultrasonic devices that can be inserted into the ground. Once again, I am afraid that it seems the majority of you find these ineffective and indeed I will never forget once seeing a molehill which appeared directly around the base of one of these gadgets in a friend’s garden - so they are not a method I recommend. If all else fails, and attempting to look at this problem in a positive light, bear in mind that incredibly finely turned soil can be useful and many gardeners I know, including the wonderful ‘grandfather of gardening’ Geoffrey Smith, used the soil as a medium in which to grow an excellent crop of seedlings! Visit Pippa’s website www.pippagreenwood. com to buy gorgeous UK grown vegetable plants accompanied by weekly advice emails from Pippa, or to peruse the really useful selection of Pippa’s favourite gardening items including pop-up crop covers, SpeedHoes, SpeedWeeders, raised bed kits, fleece jackets for plants, pull-out EasyTunnels, signed books and lots more besides.

Leckhampton locks of love to raise funds for hospice Incredible clusters of engraved padlocks are found as far and wide as the Pont de l'Archeveche in Paris, Brooklyn Bridge in New York and Ponte Milvio in Rome. The locks symbolise people’s immortal love for one another, and this message of enduring love and remembrance is coming to Sue Ryder’s Leckhampton Court Hospice this year. 'Leckhampton Locks of Love’ gives people the opportunity to leave a locked padlock in a special area of the hospice in memory of a loved one in return for a suggested donation, helping to raise much needed funds for the hospice.
encouraged to attend the hospice so they can leave their lock in a special Locks of Love area, centred round the ground’s natural lake. Alysia Cameron Price, Senior Fundraiser at Sue Ryder Leckhampton Court said, “There is huge desire to remember loved ones with memorials in or around our hospice grounds. We wanted to meet that need whilst offering something we think would be really special to signify the enduring love we have for loved ones no longer with us.”
Supporters can either purchase their own lock to have engraved with a special message or purchase a lock from the hospice for £15 to take away with them to add a personal message.
“We have an area around our natural lake which we thought would be the perfect place to offer people the opportunity to place a lock in memory of loved ones. It is a quiet area where people can come and reflect and remember, surrounded by our beautiful hospice surroundings.”
With a minimum donation of £10 supporters will then be

Pager Turners Spring may be just around the corner, but there’s still plenty of temptation to lock the cold, dark winter out and curl up with a book. From gripping psychological thrillers to folklore inspired tales, these books will keep you turning the pages late into the night. The Silkworm – Robert Galbraith (J.K. Rowling) Private Investigator Cormoran Strike is back. This time he’s been asked to find a missing writer. But when the writer turns up dead, his wife, Cormoran’s client, comes under suspicion. Are the clues to the real killer hidden in the writer’s last, unpublished book? A gripping crime novel with echoes of hard-boiled American classics, The Silkworm has plenty of twists and turns to keep you guessing. The Bear and The Nightingale – Katherine Arden In the wilds of Russia, folklore and fairy tales do battle with the Church for the villagers’ hearts and minds. As an enigmatic young priest starts to turn his flock away from their centuriesold traditions, the spirit guardians of the homes lose their strength, and darkness threatens to take hold. The only one who might be able to save the villagers is the girl they’ve turned against. Lyrical and beautiful, The Bear and The Nightingale is captivating from the very first page. Hygge – Charlotte Abrahams The Danish concept of hygge has taken the UK by storm. From candlelight and snuggly
blankets, to dinner with friends, hygge is about wellbeing, cosiness and appreciating the little things. Charlotte Abrahams talks us through how she’s embraced a more ‘hyggelig’ way of life and what it’s meant for her. There are no hard rules, no demands to cut back on this or stop doing that, just a focus on being kinder to ourselves, celebrating the ordinary and enjoying a simpler life. The Girl Before – JP Delaney At first glance One Folgate Street seems like a renter’s dream. Emma certainly thinks so, as does Jane, several months later. But the minimalist house comes with some very strict rules, and as Jane learns of Emma’s death, she starts to wonder whether there’s a darker side to the landlord’s stipulations. A tense psychological thriller, The Girl Before looks set to become one of 2017’s most talked about books. The Phantom Tree – Nicola Cornick Alison is stuck in modern day Britain, hundreds of years after she was born. Mary is back in Tudor England. But only Mary can reveal what happened to Alison’s son all those years
ago. As Alison tries to follow the clues Mary left behind, she uncovers more than she was expecting. Historical fiction with a twist, this is a must for fans of Kate Morton and Barbara Erskine. The Lauras – Sara Taylor When Ma bundles 13 year old Alex out of bed and into the car one night, neither knows just how long their road trip is going to last. Ma takes Alex across America, revisiting the places that shaped her as she was growing up, from foster homes to semi-derelict squats. As their journey progresses, she tells Alex about the ‘Lauras’ – the girls and women who played key roles in her early life. Enthralling. Three Daughters of Eve - Elif Shafak Peri spent her childhood negotiating the distance between her parents. Now she acts the part of a dutiful, Turkish housewife. But when a half-forgotten photograph reminds her of long ago freedoms, Peri struggles to keep up the charade. She can’t help but look back to her days as a student in Oxford, the choices she made, the friends she left behind and the scandal that tore everything apart.

Home & Interiors Invaluable Decorating Tips By Katherine Sorrell
Planning changes to your home? Interiors expert Katherine Sorrell has some handy hints… Living rooms • Use a scale plan of your room with cut out mini furniture items, and move these around until you find the right positions. • The alcoves either side of a chimney breast are perfect for creating extra storage. • For maximum light, fit a pole or track that overhangs far enough each on side of the window to allow the curtains to be drawn right back. • Avoid using a central hanging pendant as the only light source, but add in table lamps, floor lamps and wall lamps for a more flexible and flattering ambience. • Consider ways to disguise the TV when not in use – can you adapt a piece of furniture, such as an armoire, so that it sits behind closed doors when necessary?
Kitchens • Have tall cupboards at one end of your cupboard run, with the hob nearby and plenty of worktop space between the hob and the sink. Add the dishwasher on the other side of the sink. • If possible, make worktops 700mm deep instead of 600mm, to give more working space and to better accommodate a large sink. • In an open-plan kitchen, choose quiet appliances, and design so the washing up is hidden from the view of the dining table. • Paint the inside of a wall cabinet door with blackboard paint to give somewhere to write a shopping list. • Base cabinets on legs, or recessed plinths, make the room seem larger.
so keep the walls, floors and major items of furniture relatively neutral and just change accessories, such as rugs, cushion covers and lamp shades, as necessary. • Cover boring walls with blackboard paint, magnetic wallpaper, peg board, maps or wall stickers. • A high-level bed provides space beneath for study, play or storage. • Fit a dimmer switch so you can adjust the light from bright for playing or reading to soft and calm at bedtime. • Storage is all-important. Felt tips and paint brushes can be kept in tins, though beware of sharp edges. For storing tiny Lego sets and the like, ice cream tubs or shoe boxes are ideal.
Bedrooms • Plan storage with precision, and divide the interior of your wardrobe into hanging space plus shelves, drawers and shoe racks. Consider storage gadgets such as belt racks and pull-out trays. • Maximise space by building fitted wardrobes right up to the ceiling. • Add a blackout lining to your curtains, or choose wooden shutters for additional sound and draught-proofing, and security. • Swing-arm lights on either side of the bed free up space on bedside tables. • A blanket box at the end of the bed is ideal for storing bedding and doubles as a seat.
• If you’re on a budget, invest more in taps, shower doors and bath screens and save on a plain white suite, adding decorative appeal with tiles and attractive accessories. • Wall-hung WCs and washbasins create the illusion of extra space. • Hide pipework under floorboards or behind false walls and punch shallow shelves into the studwork to create useful storage niches. • Lights on both sides of your washbasin mirror dispel unflattering shadows. • Chosen a cast iron bath? Check it will fit up the stairs…
