From the Editor Dear Reader,

Local Magazines Published by Glos Directories - connecting local businesses with local people

Welcome to the October issue of your local community magazine. As you can see, it is packed full with local events happening in and around the area. This is a fantastic feature, especially as we have another half term holiday to look forward to at the end of the month. Also, with Halloween just around the corner, it’s a time of great excitement for children and adults alike. The Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway has a large variety of events running in October, starting with the Autumn Diesel weekend on Saturday 7th and Sunday 8th October, followed by the Cotswold Food & Drink Fayre running on Saturday 21st and Sunday 22nd October, which will be hosting a large selection of Artisan food and drink produced around the region. To wrap up the month, they are holding a Halloween Steam & Scream Special on Saturday 28th October. This spooky spectacular will be running throughout the day at either Cheltenham Racecourse or Toddington Station so why not dress up for the occasion and see who you can scare along the way! For more information on any of these events, please visit www.gwsr.com. If you would like to add an upcoming event to the “What’s on” section in the magazine, please email us at office@glosdirectories.co.uk and we will be happy to share the event for you. Also, just a thank you to all our readers who support the local businesses within our magazine. If you have a local business and would like to be included in our magazine in November, please call or email us for more information. If you have never had an advert before, that’s no problem, we have an in-house design service and we’ll create your advert for you! Hope you have a great month and see you back here in November! Best wishes,

Vicky Muller

Well We All Knew That Didn’t We? (But it’s Worth Confirming it in an Official Survey) Apologies in advance to any white-van men reading this, especially if you are one of the 3% of the careful ones: in a TomTom survey of 1,000 UK consumers, 97% of the respondents put whitevan man bottom of the list of the safest and most careful road users. The rest of us shouldn’t nod with an “I told you so” smugness either. Drivers of what the survey describes as “high performance” cars (read three popular highend German marques) only scored 1% higher, followed by taxi and truck drivers on a joint 8%. Personally, why, with such a low score on driving skill, any of us get in a taxi is beyond me.

Using an analogy, if you want any job done well, you get the professionals in. They have the tools, training, skills and experience to produce good work. So you’d think a “professional” driver, such as one behind the wheel of a taxi would have the same? From the results of the survey it seems not. On the flip side, if you drive a small car you came out tops on the safety and courtesy scores with a 27% rating. Saloon car drivers were only marginally less safe and rude, coming in at 23%. This slap on the back isn’t confined to the size of vehicle you drive either, as next were bus drivers at 17%. So, in any future survey, if you want to score highly for your driving skill and politeness, it seems you should steer clear of driving a white German-built taxi van and opt for a small saloontype bus instead. Safe and polite motoring!

Cake and Bake Chocolate and Orange Puddings Chocolate and orange are perfect flavour partners and these lovely individual puddings taste delicious served warm with custard or cream.

Ingredients: • 3 small clementines or satsumas, thinly sliced • 175g unsalted butter, softened, plus extra for greasing • 175g caster sugar • 3 large eggs, beaten • 125g self-raising flour • 50g cocoa powder, sifted • 1 tbsp fresh orange juice • 2 tsp orange zest • Custard or cream, to serve

Makes 6 Ready in 1 hours 30 mins

TIP

You can cook the puddings a few hours before serving then simply re-heat in the microwave. Turn out onto a microwave plate and reheat three at a time on High for 30-45 seconds.

1. Preheat the oven to 180°C, fan 160°C, gas mark 4. Butter and line the bases of 6 x 175ml metal pudding basins with circles of baking parchment. Place a slice of clementine or satsuma in the base of each basin and press 2-3 slices around the sides. 2. Put the butter and sugar in a bowl and, using an electric mixer, beat until pale and fluffy. Gradually beat in the eggs then sift over the flour and cocoa powder and fold into the creamed mixture with the orange juice and zest. 3. Divide the mixture between the pudding basins and cover each with a square of pleated, buttered foil, scrunching it tightly around the sides of each basin. Transfer to a roasting tin and pour in enough boiling water from a kettle to reach halfway up the sides of the basins. 4. Bake for 1 hour, until the puddings have risen and are firm to the touch, and a skewer inserted through the foil of one of the puddings comes out clean. Turn out and serve with custard or cream.

Gardeners In Glass Houses by Pippa Greenwood

A greenhouse is a purchase you won’t regret, literally transforming your gardening activities and opening up a whole new range of possibilities - but what should you consider? A greenhouse needs to be sited well away from large trees, to prevent shady conditions within, as well as falling branches or other tree debris damaging the glass and clogging the guttering. If you are going to want to install any electrical equipment, bear in mind that the further the greenhouse is from the existing supply, the more expensive it will be to install underground armoured cable. Choose the largest greenhouse your space and budget allows, as many gardeners end up wishing for something larger. But any greenhouse is better than none, so if 4ft x 4ft is the only option, then still go for it! Most greenhouses have a frame made from wood or metal (typically aluminium). Many prefer the look of wood, but it will need regular maintenance unless it is western red cedar. Whichever you choose, make sure it is sturdily constructed, especially if you live in a windprone area. Plenty of ventilation helps reduce the temperature, particularly in the height of summer, preventing damage

to plants or even their death. It also improves air circulation, so reducing problems with plant diseases. Consider roof vents, which aid air circulation and efficient loss of excess heat. Make sure that greenhouse doorway is wide enough for easy access - ideally wide enough to push a wheelbarrow through, as this makes jobs such as changing the soil or bringing in compost easier. A greenhouse should be erected on a solid base - perhaps paving slabs, concrete or bricks - or on a skirt or surround of paving or concrete. A solid path up the centre is practical and can be combined with an open bed up one or both sides. A bed has the advantage that it can be filled with quality soil and planted directly, making maintenance of crops like tomatoes straightforward. A solid base means greenhouse crops must be grown in containers. I recommend greenhouse staging, usually made from slatted wood or metal, as a perfect place to stand seed trays, pots and propagators. Most greenhouses are fitted with horticultural grade glass, but this can be replaced with safety glass or reinforced glass if the garden is used by children. Plastic, polythene or corrugated plastic ‘glazing’

are also available; these are generally lower cost and less of a potential hazard - but check how long they will last and consider how they will look. Useful extras include: shading; guttering and a linked in waterbutt; and an electrical supply, which allows heating, lighting, fans and installation of a heated propagator. My Top Reasons for Getting a Greenhouse • You can grow a wider range of crops with ease. • It provides a longer growing season. • You can raise plants from seed and save money. • It will dramatically reduce the risk of problems such as tomato blight. • Plants get plenty of natural light and are more likely to thrive. • It makes a perfect gardener’s hide-away! Visit Pippa’s website www. pippagreenwood.com for her ‘Winter thru’ Spring Collection’ of gorgeous UK-grown gardenready vegetable plants ready for delivery in September. You’ll also find many gardening items including growing frames, SpeedHoes, SpeedWeeders, raised bed kits, Nemaslug and other nematode controls, copper tape, pull-out EasyTunnels, signed books and lots more besides.

Metal Detecting around Bishop's Cleeve I've been a local resident of Bishops Cleeve for 55 years and love to share with people the many coins and artefacts that I've found over the years. Most detectorists including myself have collected boxes and boxes full of local artefacts but the real shame is that they very rarely see the light of day. You may also be surprised to hear that museums are not interested in displaying our finds unless it's something spectacular like the Staffordshire Hoard. All the finds pictured have been found around Bishop's Cleeve and Cheltenham and are recorded with the Portable Antiquities Scheme. I would like to say special thanks to the landowners around Cleeve who allow me to save these finds which are such an important part of Bishop's Cleeve's past. Roman coins, brooches and rings are always wonderful to find, some are in poor condition but many come out of the ground in perfect condition with a green patina. It's such a thrill to be the first person to hold a coin, brooch or ring that is two thousand years old! Silver hammered coins (a lump of silver placed on a block and hit with a hammer to form the coin) are very

often clipped to steal the excess silver around the circumference as the coins in the photo show. Every now and then you can find the most unexpected item such as a commemorative medal of Napoleon Bonaparte (see picture) with his face on one side and the two ships which took him to exile on the island of St Helena on the other. Another find I recently came across was a perfect Roman coin that had once been covered in gold. I suspected it to be a counterfeit coin of the time as did the liaison county archaeologist for Gloucestershire who I show all my finds to until he sends a photo off for identification in London. It was confirmed, however, that it was a modern button in the shape of a Roman coin. How did both these and other items find themselves in a field in Gloucestershire? Alas, I have to say I'm still looking for my first gold coin. I've seen many found by others and every time my spade goes into the ground my heart misses a beat and then up comes... a Coke can. I spoke to the archaeologists who are doing the dig before the new houses are built at Dean Farm in Bishop's Cleeve. They think they have found a Roman Villa but the builders have decided to leave it untouched as a children's park rather than develop it. It just shows how near to Roman history we are here in Bishop's Cleeve. If you would like to join our happy group of metal detectorists or come along to one of our club meetings, they take place on the 2nd Wednesday of every month at 7.30pm at the Exmouth Arms

in Cheltenham. I have shared with you today a very small part of my collection and hope you enjoyed seeing just some of the exciting things that can be found right underneath your feet in the Bishop's Cleeve area. We at CHADS Metal Detecting Club also offer a free lost ring service and host a club dig once a month. We are fully insured and you can find out more about us via our website www. chadsdetecting.org.uk and our Facebook page (see website for the link). Also, if you have a find and are unsure about what it is, email me on coroberts1340@ gmail.com. If I don't know, I will know someone who does! - Written by Colin Roberts

Home & Interiors Designing A Dressing Room

Many of us yearn for the luxury of a dressing room, a dedicated place in which to store clothes, leaving the bedroom as a comfortable, tranquil place, uncluttered by bulky wardrobes and chests of drawers. When space allows, this could be an immensely useful, functional space, with clothes storage, a dressing table, seating and plenty of mirrors. When space is restricted, it may be more efficient to turn a small room, part of a landing or one end of a bathroom or the master bedroom into a dressing area packed with carefully designed storage. How big should a dressing room be? It’s best to measure everything that you’re planning to put in the room, then draw up

plans and elevations of where and how they’ll fit. Most people opt for a combination of hanging space and drawers. Think of rails for full, half and three-quarter-length hanging, deep, shallow and compartmentalised drawers, and useful fittings such as tie holders, pull-out shelves, boxes, trouser hangers and laundry bins. The hard-toreach top parts of the space are ideal for infrequently used items, and shoes can be kept in racks or on trees at the bottom. To create a full-on dressing room, leave enough space for a dressing table with a good mirror and drawers for cosmetics, hair styling kit and so on. A full-length mirror is essential, and for drying hair you’ll need a plug socket nearby. There are three ways to fit out the space: find a carpenter or joiner to make you an utterly bespoke room; commission a fitted-furniture specialist; or use off-the-shelf elements from DIY sheds or storage specialists

By Katherine Sorrell

and make it up yourself. The latter option is cheapest but less flexible, and may not make the best use of your space. It is important to get the lighting right in a dressing room. If wall fittings, dangling pendants or floor lamps are in the way, inset ceiling spotlights are best. Fit enough to ensure the room is brightly lit, particularly if your finishes are dark. If clothes are screened off with doors, fit sensor-operated lights that switch on when you open the doors. While the organisation of storage is essentially utilitarian, there is always an element of aesthetics, too. Even plain, open-fronted storage comes in a choice of finishes, while bespoke versions could incorporate exotic woods, leather or wicker. Ideally, match the style of the dressing room and bedroom, picking out colours, finishes and details such as drawer handles and light switches, to seamlessly blend the rooms together.

Creating a dressing room area in a bedroom If you don’t have space for a dedicated dressing room, consider sectioning off one end of the bedroom instead. Use a curtain or screen to separate the spaces or build a false wall to act as a headboard and, on the other side, a wardrobe. Make the wall as high as the hanging space needed for your longest clothes, but stop it short of the ceiling to increase the sense of space and light in the room. As with any space-saving storage requirements, ensure that any fitted furniture makes use of the full height and width available, and look for clever fittings such as corner carousels, pull-down hangers and tilting laundry baskets. Password Protection Winner of the HEATING INSTALLER FOR THE SOUTH WEST Award 2017

VISIT OUR HETAS APPROVED SHOWROOM

We all know our passwords probably aren’t strong enough, but remembering complex passwords is difficult. The solution? A password manager. Apps such as 1Password or LastPass create a secure vault to store passwords on your computer, and when they’re needed they’re filled out automatically. Best of all, you can synchronise passwords across your various devices, so a password saved to your computer is available on your phone. Apple offers its service via iCloud Keychain, allowing you to store and sync passwords between Macs, iPads and iPhones. The real benefit of these services is that they generate really strong passwords, so you don’t have to come up with them yourself or remember impossiblesounding combinations of letters and characters. But don’t forget the golden rule: never use the same password on more than one site or service.

Happy volunteers – you could be one of them! Volunteering – Why do we do it? For some of us volunteering is second nature, we've put our hand up before the request for help has hit most peoples' ears! We're addicted to the rush, we're adrenaline junkies who don't like the dangerous stuff. We often wonder about the people who never volunteer but have never explored the reasons why. We would love for more people to enjoy the benefits of volunteering; meeting new people and making new friends, being part of a community, learning new skills, gaining confidence and doing something for our school that has a really positive impact on the children's time there. Reasons people don't volunteer;

secret – we enjoy hanging out, having random discussions about vegetable models and cutting out 500 beautifully decorated flags) but we think it would be much better if everybody did a little bit and we shared the fun. The bonfire and fireworks event requires approximately 700 "man hours", from planning through to clean up, that's just one hour per pupil and member of staff and it raised £6,000 last year. We're not suggesting you jump straight in and volunteer to run the event (but please feel free to offer), however, perhaps you could offer an hour to do some photocopying, put up some posters or make cups of tea for the bonfire builders?

Beef And Pepper Stroganoff Serves 4

Ready in 25 minutes

This is a fabulously quick and easy supper that is packed full of flavour. Serve with a watercress or rocket salad, if liked.

Ingredients: • • • • • • • • •

350g tagliatelle 1tbsp olive oil 4 flash-fry steaks (each about 125g), cut into thin strips 1 large onion, peeled and thinly sliced 1 garlic clove, peeled and crushed 1 large red pepper, deseeded and thinly sliced 300ml carton half-fat crème fraiche 2tsp coarsely ground black pepper 1-2 tbsp freshly chopped flat-leaf parsley

TIP

Add a spoonful of wholegrain mustard with the crème fraiche for an extra piquant flavour or try a splash of Worcestershire sauce.

Bring a large pan of lightly salted water to the boil. Add the tagliatelle and cook for 8-10 minutes or according to the packet instructions. Meanwhile, heat the olive oil in a large frying pan and stir-fry the steak strips over a very high heat until browned. Remove with a slotted spoon and set aside. Add the onion and garlic to the pan and fry for 3-4 minutes until golden then add the pepper slices and cook for a further 2-3 minutes. Return the steak strips and any meat juices to the pan and stir in the crème fraiche and ground black pepper. Heat through gently. Stir in the parsley and adjust the seasoning to taste. Drain the tagliatelle and divide between four warmed shallow pasta bowls. Spoon the steak mixture on top and garnish with a little more freshly ground black pepper.

Overbury Bowling Club's season-ending championships & charity fundraising With just 1 point separating Overbury Bowling Club from the leaders in the South Worcestershire Triples league, the final match needed to be won to secure the 2017 championship. Following a beautifully hot August bank holiday Monday, Overbury A team played the deciding match against Aston Somerville A team on a cold wet evening the very next day. It was a hard fought match during which the lead on each of the 3 rinks swung both ways, resulting in Overbury winning one rink with an insufficient margin to secure the overall match win. Overbury Bowling Club ended the 2017 league as runners up with Aston Somerville taking the championship. Two days previously, Overbury held their Club Championship Finals Day on a beautifully sunny and hot day. Dan Mason and Stu Yapp had another very hard fought match with Dan securing the Men's

Championship 21 - 20 on the last end. The Men's Handicap was a repeat match for Dan and Stu with Dan winning the match on a final end shoot out. The Ladies Championship had to be postponed when one of the contenders found herself on the wrong side of a hospital bed and the other did not want to claim a walkover victory in those circumstances. In the Men's Pairs, Mike Mace and Neil Williams beat Albert England and Dan Mason 21 10, the scoreline not reflecting the close and hard won match play. The Ladies 2 wood championship was played earlier with Jan Newton and Barbara Baldwin winning over Daphne Hayward and Gillian Pearce. In the Mixed Pairs, Stu Yapp and Daphne Hayward triumphed 23 - 14 over Barry and Sue Robinson. Pete Jones became the Veterans Champion when he defeated Tony Brown 21 - 15. Mike Ames, the Club Championships Organiser,

said: "Well done to all the finalists who provided some top class bowls throughout the day. It was a superb Men's Singles Final which went all the way to the wire. Stu and Dan then kept the standard going in the Men's Singles Handicap where Stu almost got revenge but an excellent draw by Dan on a 'shoot out' end gave him a second title of the day." As a complete change from competitive bowls, Overbury Bowling Club put on a 'Have-a-Go' stand at the Winchcombe Country Show to not only raise the profile of the sport of bowls and the club itself but also to raise funds for the Show which are then distributed to local charitable organisations. The stand attracted people from far and wide. The closest came from a house adjoining the show ground whilst the furthest came from Australia. The Show is certainly on the world stage and now so is Overbury Bowling Club! To the hundreds of people who came by the stand, bowling club members Mike & Sandy Mace, Albert & Dot England and Pete Jones introduced the sport and raised ÂŁ144 for the show's funds. It was a long, very tiring but immensely rewarding, day. Even though bowls is perceived to be a retirement activity, many of the younger generation enjoyed their taster session and, hopefully, will take up the sport, helping with the future continuity of all bowling clubs. Whilst league matches provide focus and excitement, Overbury Bowling Club members can practice, receive coaching, play friendly matches and/or just socialise at the club or in the licensed bar. Whenever the green is not allocated to maintenance, matches or club activities, it is available for members to use for practice or to receive organised coaching. For anyone who has wondered if bowls might be the challenge they seek, come along and try it out with the help of one of our coaches to get you started on the right path. New members, both young and senior, are always welcome to join in this very social and sporting activity. The club has both equipment and qualified coaches to get the inexperienced up and running quickly and to iron out those annoying problems which can affect one's game. For more information, contact Overbury Bowling Club at info@overburybowling.net or one of the club officials listed on www.overburybowling.net

Hobbies You’re Never Alone With A Book Club By Kate McLelland Who said reading was a solitary occupation? These days, thanks to the popularity of book clubs, you’ll find book lovers throughout the world coming together to socialise and share their views. And avid readers who can’t meet face-to-face will find plenty of online platforms where they can discuss the books they have enjoyed with others. The main objective of a book club is to invite a group of people to read a novel or work of non-fiction in their own time and then come together in a social setting in order to discuss it. Some book clubs meet in group members’ homes, while others meet in libraries, pubs or community centres. These gatherings are usually informal in nature, with few set rules, although limits may be set on the time allowed for conversations that are not related to books! Joining up Many clubs are set up by word of mouth, so you could ask friends, family or work colleagues if they know of any groups operating locally. Your local library can also be a good source of information. If your library doesn’t already run its own club, it may provide

space for an independent group to meet, or carry a list of book clubs operating in the area. Websites such as readinggroups.org or mybookclub.com also carry lists of local groups you can join. Starting your own book club If you’ve researched your area and found that there are no groups that meet your needs, you could always set up your own club. Here are a few ideas to get you started: choose what type of book club you’d like to run. Should it be seriously academic, or light and frivolous? The answer may depend on the type of people who will be attracted to join: their ages, gender and areas of interest. Decide how many people should be invited as members. A group of between 8 and 16 is a comfortable size, allowing you manage conversations and continue with sessions even if several members are absent. think about when and how often the club should get together. Meeting on a monthly or six-weekly basis works well for most people and gives time for books to be read. It is

best if the timing of meetings is agreed through discussions with other members, in order to accommodate their work or childcare commitments. Once you’ve decided on a schedule that works well for the group, try to stick with it. there are many different ways to keep in touch with members but the quickest and most efficient way to communicate is via email or social media. Set up a Facebook group for your club or sign up to the website bookmovement.com, which lets you set up a private book club page to keep track of book selections, send out meeting invitations and track acceptances. In addition to all the pleasure you’ll get from reading and discussing a wide range of books, by joining or starting up a book club you will also enjoy linked activities such as visits to literary festivals, meeting local authors or trips to the cinema to see the film version of a book you’ve read. It’s the perfect activity for socially-inclined book lovers. If you ever thought reading was a lonely pastime, there’s no doubt you’ll revise your opinion when you join a book club.

Autumn Fayre raises £6,500 for hospice Hospice said, “I want to say a huge thank you to everyone who supported this event, which over the past three years has helped raise a staggering £21,000 for our hospice.”

Sue Ryder Leckhampton Court Hospice’s Autumn Fayre on Saturday 9th September raised over £6,500 for the charity, which could pay for over 4 00 hours of specialist hospice care. Despite the wet weather conditions, local people and families donned their wellies and waterproofs to take to the grounds of the hospice’s Grade II* listed Cotswold manor house for a day of fun, food, live music and entertainment, all officially opened by the Mayor of Cheltenham, Councillor Klara Sudbury. As is tradition, Gloucestershire Morris Dancers and guests gave a special performance to close the fayre, rounding off a day of performances throughout Cheltenham where they collected over £1,000 for the hospice thanks to the generosity of local people. Elise Hoadley, Director of Sue Ryder Leckhampton Court

“Despite the wet weather it was great to see local families enjoying time together in our hospice grounds, helping raise much-needed funds for our care. We received help from so many people including our fabulous volunteers from the hospice, corporate volunteers who helped get everything in place and friends and volunteers from local groups too.” “Moben Marquees made sure we had some much-needed undercover areas on the day, and our friends at Creed Food Services supplied us with some tasty sausages and burgers for the ever popular BBQ. Our Autumn Fayre is our flagship community fundraising event when we throw open our doors to local people and their families and we are always so touched by the amazing support we receive.”

Court Hospice is a charity and is home to the only inpatient unit in Gloucestershire giving specialist hospice care to people aged 18 and over living with conditions like cancer, heart failure and lung disease alongside its Day Hospice programme and Hospice at Home team. It also offers family and bereavement support, rehabilitation, complementary therapies, spiritual care and befriending. For more information visit www.sueryder.org/leckhampton

Could Brexit Cloud Your Plans To Retire In The Sun? by Kate McLelland When the TV programme “A Place in the Sun” launched in the year 2000, international travel was becoming easier and cheaper thanks to the birth of low-cost airlines such as easyJet and Ryanair. The show was intended to demonstrate how simple it could be for British residents to buy a home - or a second home - in countries such as Spain, France or Portugal. The prospect of owning a place in the sun was particularly tempting for older people planning their retirement, as cheaper EU property prices allowed downsizers to retain some capital from the sale of their UK homes. Legislation allowing the free movement of EU citizens made it easy to take up residence in another country and travel freely without the need for visas, while reciprocal EU healthcare arrangements provided access to free medical treatment. Thanks to Brexit, the picture is changing. Earlier this year a report by Spain’s Association of Land and Commercial Registrars revealed that British demand for second homes had reduced by 30% since the referendum, while estate agents on some of the more popular Greek islands reported an even sharper decline, with

an estimated 80% drop in interest. One of the greatest concerns for prospective buyers is that the rights and benefits UK citizens have previously enjoyed as a result of the UK’s membership of the EU and the European Economic Area (EEA) will be withdrawn when we leave. Buying a property Currently the fall in the pound is making property purchases abroad more expensive for UK buyers, but it is hoped that the pound’s value will eventually strengthen when more is known about Britain’s prospects outside the EU. While there is no doubt that Britons will continue to be able to buy property and live in an EU country after Brexit (just as non-EU and non-EU European nationals do without problems today), there are questions as to whether property owning Brits will be charged higher taxes on their assets. Although nothing is certain at this stage, the economic benefits UK property owners bring to less affluent areas of France, Spain and Portugal may make EU members more reluctant to penalise British owners. travel Once we have left the

European community, it’s unlikely that we will experience the same speedy passage through passport control that we once enjoyed, but the jury is out on whether you might need a visa to visit another EU country. If visas are required, spontaneous trips to the UK from your home abroad - or from Britain to your EU holiday home - could become a thing of the past. Medical treatMent At present, anyone receiving a UK state pension whilst living in an EU country is entitled to free healthcare. It would be extremely costly for the NHS if, after Brexit, it had to care for everyone who currently receives treatment abroad, so it is expected that negotiators will try to keep some sort of reciprocal arrangement, provided the UK remains in the EEA. There is - inevitably - much speculation about how our exit from the EU might affect our ability to live in or visit European countries, but the truth is no-one can give an accurate answer until negotiations with the remaining 27 member states have been completed. Until that time, the dream of retiring to “a place in the sun” may simply have to be put on ice.
