LEWIS Pay less to get more These cold dark days of winter leave many dreaming of summer. Yet don’t let travel lust destroy your wallet. Most people book holidays in the early months of the year, so if you’re jet set on tripping abroad this year, here’s my top tips on how to use the web to pay less to get more.

Slash flight costs using the RIGHT comparison. Unlike package holidays with scheduled flights, leaving it until the last minute means prices rocket. So make sure you’re booking in advance and use the right site for the job.

- Cheapest price on normal flights: Here, just use a flight comparison site. I like www.kayak.co.uk (for gizmos), www.skyscanner.net (for ease), and www.travelsupermarket.com (for breadth).

- Check cheap charter flights comparisons too: If you’re flying to a traditional package holiday destination, like Majorca, you should also check for spare capacity being sold on tour operators' own flights. The comparisons that include these ‘charter flights’ are www.travelsupermarket.com, www.avro.co.uk and www.flightsdirect.com.

- Find the perfect time to book: Use the Flight Insight tab on comparison site www.momondo.co.uk, eg, on average 59 days ahead is the perfect time to book, but it varies by destination, so worth a check.

Flight booking - the clever stuff to cut costs. Once you've found the cheapest price via a comparison, if you want to push harder, you need to get clever.

- Book the wrong date trick. Easyjet's Flexifares let you switch dates by a few weeks without paying more. So bag cheap term-time flights, then swap for your chosen school holiday dates. One of my users saved £700 on her family's break, yet there are pros and cons. Full step-by-step in www.mse.me/easyjet.

- The codeshare trick. Sometimes two or more airlines sell the same flights and booking via one partner is cheaper, eg, a United flight from Birmingham to New York can be cheaper via Lufthansa.

- Ethnic travel agents trick. If you're going somewhere with a big UK ethnic or immigrant community, check out niche travel agents catering to them. Eg, London's Shepherd's Bush has some Caribbean specialists, or the Jewish Chronicle advertises cheap flights to Israel.

- The credit card flight freebie trick. You can get a 'free' Flybe flight anywhere or a BA European flight (you pay taxes) just by signing up to a fee-free credit card, and doing normal spending on it. For a full list of freebies see www.mse.me/ccfreebies.

Cut the price for your hotel room. Forget the star system. There's no world standard and it's often about facilities, not quality. To find the hotel you want to stay at read reviews on the ubiquitous www.tripadvisor.co.uk, but always ignore the best and worst 10%. Check comparison sites, both www.trivago.co.uk and www.travelsupermarket.com allow you to see who's selling your hotel room for less.

Then also be aware there are commonly promo codes available for the big hotel booking sites which can cut your costs by a further 15% for a full list of current ones see www.mse.me/hotelsales.

Tricks to uncover 5-star hotels at 3-star prices. If you've time to play and want the really big discounts, then there are two naughty (but legal) routes.

- Uncover secret hotels. www.lastminute.com sells secret hotels at big discounts, where you know the star rating, description and rough location, but aren't told the name till you've paid. Yet by cutting and pasting key words into google then matching up the ‘ratings’ you can uncover them before you book – full step by step in www.mse.me/secrethotels.

- HUGE discounts with the Priceline bidding loophole. www.priceline.com is a huge US booking site (it works for some European cities too). The trick is fiddly, but devastatingly lucrative as forumite 5*dealhunter found: "Got the 5* Renaissance Barcelona Hotel for £59 a night for 3 nights instead of £310 - a saving of 81%." If you’ve got 30 minutes to try it see my instructions at www.mse.me/priceline.

Facing North

by Pippa Greenwood The problem I am asked about most frequently is that of what to do with a north-facing wall.

Everyone wants to know what you can plant up it but more importantly, what you can do to increase the chances of your chosen plant not just surviving but also thriving.

Getting the right plant for the spot is essential and I’ve listed some great north-facing wall climbers below. But first consider whether you need year round cover (and so something evergreen) or would accept a deciduous climber that will lose its leaves but keep a framework of stems, or if you could live with an herbaceous climber that will die back each year and return again in the spring.

If the wall is very shaded it may be worth reducing the shade if you can. Nearby wall-shrubs could be pruned back or overhanging trees crown lifted (the lower branches removed) or crown thinned (the crown’s density reduced).

Walls may be a dark grey or brick colour but you can make the spot considerably more plant friendly if you change the colour of the wall before planting. A pale-coloured masonry paint on the wall will cause light to be reflected back

to the plant and make it more likely to thrive.

Consider growing more than one climber to increase the season of interest and so the amount of time that the wall looks good.

Flowering may be reduced if the site is gloomy and so to maximise your climber’s flower power make sure that you apply sulphate of potash as this will increase flowering potential. Follow the instructions on the pack, and generally try to apply it to the root area in late summer and then again in spring.

Make sure that the climber goes in at a good distance from the wall up which it is to grow. A minimum of about 45cm (18in) should mean that it can develop a good strong root system and this will help to keep it growing well.

Self-clinging climbers such as the climbing hydrangea or a variegated ivy can look great and help to provide at least part of the interest you’re after for your north-facing wall, but even these often need a bit of a helping hand to get them started – train the stems on to the wall and protect from wind until they get properly attached.

Berberidopsis Coralline - Prefers acidic soil, clusters of deep red flowers in early autumn.

Clematis - Many smaller flowered varieties such as white flowered, rampant C. montana do well.

Codonopsis Convolvulacea Pretty bell or saucer shaped violet coloured flowers in summer.

Humulus Lupulus (the hop) - The golden leafed ‘Aurea’ will perform quite well as long as the shade is not too intense or the site windy.

Hydrangea Anomela Petiolaris - A deciduous climber with broad creamy white flowerheads.

Lathyrus Latifolius - the everlasting pea. Small clusters of pinky purple flowers throughout the summer and in to early autumn Lonicera x Americana - Classic honeysuckle flowers in yellow flushed red and with a gorgeous perfume during the summer.

Lonicera x Tellamanniana - Bright yellowy orange honeysuckle flowers in late spring and summer.

Vitis Coignetiae - Renowned for its fabulous autumn colour.

Golden Years Memories of 50 Years Ago by Ted Bruning redemption through music, and their dramatic escape from the Nazis is well-known.

It’s also common knowledge that the movie and the 1959 Rodgers & Hammerstein stage musical on which it was based, played fast and loose with Maria’s memoir of the family’s career. It overdramatized and oversweetened – a string of directors actually turned the picture down as too sugary before Robert Wise (who had just won two Oscars for West Side Story) took it on.

But Maria’s best-selling 1949 memoir, The Story of the Trapp Family Singers, seems to have been just as sanitised.

She was the greatest straightwoman in the history of cinema and the butt of Groucho Marx’s cruellest witticisms (“You’re fighting for this woman’s honour, which is more than she ever did!”). A trained opera singer, she became a Broadway star in the early 1920s and found herself cast in a Marx Brothers revue, The Cocoanuts, in 1925. Between 1925 and 1941 she played the blue-blooded but none-too-bright matron in six Marx Brothers movies and also starred opposite other comedy giants of the era including Abbot & Costello, Laurel & Hardy and WC Fields.

Home & Interiors Look Back In Nostalgia

A hand-block printed effect, in a palette of light, bright and cheery colours, is particularly effective. For bathrooms and kitchens, painted tongue and groove panelling or white beveledged tiles (laid in a brick bond pattern) work especially well.

Do you yearn for the charming styles of the past? For the pretty patterns and jolly colours, the homemade accessories, the simple good looks that made a home really homely? Then read on for interiors expert Katherine Sorrell’s look at nostalgic style.

Take a look at your floors for a first step towards nostalgic style. Plain or painted wooden boards are ideal, with flatwoven rugs for extra warmth where necessary, though neutral carpets or naturalfibre coverings are a good alternative, while you could opt for stone tiles in hallways or kitchens. On the walls, you might keep things plain and simple with while or off-white

Furniture can be really inexpensive –you might pick something up at a local auction or even a second-hand shop for next to nothing. Look for sturdy, useful pieces in a timeless style, made from pine, oak or Lloyd Loom. Anything too dark or heavy looking can be painted – though make sure it is not too massive and overbearing in the room. Don’t expect perfection: knocked corners or faded upholstery may even enhance the overall look, while mismatching pieces aren’t too much of a problem provided they fit into the overall aesthetic.

Textiles are often the key to getting nostalgic style just right. Think plain fabrics combined with ticking stripes, gingham, spots and florals – spriggy or else big, blowsy blooms. Don’t aim for over-coordination; instead, a range of complementary colours and patterns gives a suitably eclectic effect. Natural fabrics (such as cotton, linen and wool) are nicest, in a range of weights and effects, such as tweed, canvas, muslin or sateen. Remnants, if you’re good with a sewing machine, can be run up into all sorts of lovely items. Window

treatments, for example, are a doddle – just a pair of gathered curtains – while leftovers can quickly be made into cushion covers. Patchwork quilts, of course, are simply perfect in the bedroom, as are Welsh blankets and satin eiderdowns, while knitting and crochet (especially granny squares) are essential ingredients in virtually any room.

Displays of pretty accessories can be the making of this look, whether it’s spongeprinted ceramics, pressed glass, blue-and-white crockery or enamelware. Modern reproductions are easy to find and not expensive, but more fun can be had in seeking out just the right original bits and bobs, from storage jars to aprons, cut-glass jugs to wooden kitchen utensils, whether it’s at a vintage fair, charity shops or your local car boot sale. Think dressers piled with pretty crockery, a stack of biscuit tins on a shelf or laceedged towels in the bathroom.

Add woven baskets, metal buckets, vintage milk bottles, bristle brushes, some lengths of bunting, even old books such as orange Penguin classics or Ladybird children’s stories; and finish things off with some informal arrangements of native flowers tucked into jam jars or informal jugs or vases. The result? You have transformed yesterday’s pleasures into today’s delightful treasures.

A Long-Forgotten Race Meeting

As the month of March is synonymous with the Cheltenham Festival I have been searching the archives for a topical item for this month‘s Magazine. I hope you will enjoy the following story as much as I have enjoyed researching it; the Cheltenham race meeting of 1855.

Readers with good memories might remember my article on one of Cheltenham‘s earliest race meetings, held on Cleeve Hill in June 1820, as an integral part of the spa‘s summer season. These races came to an end in 1842 when they were replaced by a Grand Annual Steeplechase held in the spring at various locations around the town, including Prestbury Park. This formed part of the Rosehill estate which was bought in 1853 by Charles Dodson. He was obviously no race goer, for in January 1855 he banned all racing on his land. What a disaster for the racing community! But it responded swiftly and planned to return to Cleeve Hill, with the memory of well-contested races across the open downland of the common. Dates of the meeting were fixed for Thursday and Friday 28th and 29th June and subscription lists were opened, principally to make the prize money worthwhile. The committee needed prestigious patrons and the Duke of Beaufort and

Captain Francis Berkeley were invited to be the stewards. £20 was paid to the freeholders of Bishop‘s Cleeve for the privilege of racing on their common land.

Finally, what of the races themselves? Five were planned each day, with the most valuable Gloucestershire Stakes on Thursday and the Captain Berkeley Cheltenham Handicap on Friday being the main contests.

The scenes on the hill must have brought the memories flooding back as a temporary grandstand, booths, sideshows, refreshment tents and stalls were set up, but there was also a modern twist; the Great Western Railway organised a race special from Swindon to Cheltenham.This must have been the very first race special ever run to Cheltenham although, unlike today, the punters had to make their own way from the station, near St James‘ Square, to the top of Cleeve Hill. Carriages went the long way round by Whittington, but for those who could not afford them, the same long dusty climb through Prestbury had not changed! Enterprising inhabitants in Prestbury set up beer stalls along the route to help them on their way.They must have been particularly welcomed in the hot and sultry weather on the Thursday.

“The sport was excellent,” reported the Gloucester Journal, but it added that the

fields were thin, with only five running in the Gloucestershire Stakes. Nevertheless it was an exciting finish when Mr Gulliver‘s Collingwood at 5-2 defeated the favourite, Lord John Scott‘s Le Juif, backed at 5-4. The second day was poorly-attended; the crowds were “anything but numerous or fashionable” according to the Gloucester Chronicle. Even the main race, the Cheltenham Handicap, lacked any excitement and proved to be a “one-horse race”; Mr Powell‘s Redemption winning easily from a field of seven. Neither steward turned up.

Sadly for the promoters, there was no escaping the fact that the races had been a disappointment. The glory days had not been recaptured and there was to be no repeat. So why was this? It was not just the inconvenient location; Cheltenham was no longer “the merriest sick resort on earth”, for it had become a more sober and restrained town; some would say largely from the influence of the Reverend Francis Close. In addition, steeplechasing was inherently more exciting and unpredictable than flat racing

and it did soon return, this time to Lord Ellenborough‘s estate at the foot of Cleeve Hill. It was near here just fifty years later that the present course was to find its home.

Cake and Bake Hot Cross Buns Home-made hot cross buns are easy to make so why not give them a go? Serve warm from the oven, split and spread with orange flavoured butter for the ultimate Easter treat!

Ingredients: • 500g strong white plain flour, plus extra for dusting • � tsp salt • 2 tsp ground mixed spice • 55g caster sugar • 1 x 7g sachet easy blend or fast action dried yeast • 300ml milk • 55g butter, cubed • 1 large egg • 150g dried mixed fruit

for the crosses and glaze • 3 tbsp plain flour • 1-2 tbsp warmed golden syrup or honey

Serves 12

1. Sift the flour into a large bowl and stir in the salt, mixed spice, sugar and dried yeast. Make a well in the middle.

2. Bring the milk almost to the boil in a small pan then stir in the butter until melted. Leave the liquid to cool until it’s just hand hot.

Pour the liquid into the well with the beaten egg and mix with a round- bladed knife to make a soft and slightly sticky dough.

3. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic, adding a little more flour if the dough is too sticky.

4. Place the dough in a clean, lightly greased bowl and cover with oiled cling film. Leave the bowl in a warm place for about 1 hour or until the dough has doubled in size.

5. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead in the dried fruit. Divide and shape the dough into 12 even-sized buns and place on a large greased baking sheet, leaving about 2cm space around each bun.

6. Cover loosely with oiled cling film and leave in a warm place until the buns have risen by at least half again and are almost touching each other. This will take about 45 minutes to an hour.

Preheat the oven to 220C, 200C fan, Gas Mark 7.

7. For the crosses, place the flour in a bowl and gradually add enough cold water (about 2 tbsp) to make a thick paste. Spoon into a piping bag fitted with a small plain nozzle and pipe crosses on each of the buns. Bake the buns in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes until risen and golden brown. Leave on the baking sheet for 5 minutes then transfer to a cooking rack. Brush with the warmed golden syrup or honey while the buns are still warm.

Have your say on Tewkesbury Borough‘s future Members of the public are invited to have their say on a draft planning document for Tewkesbury Borough, which includes a range of possible options for small-scale development sites.

The document is called the Tewkesbury Borough Plan and, once formally adopted, it will play a key role in helping to guide Tewkesbury Borough‘s future development between 2011 and 2031.

The consultation on the document runs from the end of February to 5pm on Monday, 13 April and residents are invited to have their say at a number of events across the borough, as well as online at tewkesbury.gov.uk/boroughplan The borough council has already asked members of the public for their views on what key issues should be included in the draft borough plan during a consultation in October and November 2013.The responses, which are available on the council‘s website, were used as a starting point for the proposals within the draft plan.

As well as including all the possible options for small-scale development sites, the draft document includes local planning policies - which cover issues such as how the council will approach rural employment sites, transport and accessibility, conservation areas and the surrounding landscape.

The plan will sit underneath an overarching Joint Core Strategy (JCS) - a document being produced by Gloucester City, Cheltenham Borough and Tewkesbury Borough Councils to guide large scale development, including housing, employment and associated infrastructure.

With significant growth forecast for the borough over the next 16 years, it will be the role of the Tewkesbury Borough Plan to identify specific sites to accommodate the smaller-scale element of this growth.

The JCS already identifies the level of development expected to be accommodated in the rural areas of Tewkesbury Borough - in total, just over 2600 homes need to be built between 2011 and 2031. Most of these homes already have planning permission but it is the job of the Tewkesbury Borough Plan to identify the land to accommodate the remaining 700 homes.

It is really important to recognise that within the draft plan, there are more sites put forward than are needed - and this is so that members of the public can have their say on what would be their preferred option. Therefore, the site options are not set in stone and the draft plan shows what could be achieved at each site if homes were built at a higher or lower density.

The council is keen to hear from as many people as possible, and is encouraging both communities and individuals to give their opinions on which sites, and why, would be most appropriate to meet the required housing need and be included in the next stage of the plan.

Following the consultation period, the potential site options will be refined, drawing on information received during the consultation period. A full set of proposed allocations will then be included in the next stage of the plan.

Finance Pensions Rules are Changing: What You Need to Know

It sometimes feels like politicians are being deliberately obtuse - why don’t they use plain English when talking about pensions so we all know where we stand on this important issue?

Although other choices are available, including property or stocks and shares, saving into a private pension does offer the following tax advantages: • The government pays tax relief on your payments • You’re not taxed on the money in your pension pot (up to certain limits) • At pension age you can withdraw a percentage of your pension as a tax-free lump sum But what about the State Pension – won’t that provide the income I need in retirement?

State Pension rules are set to change from 2016 when a weekly flat rate will be introduced. These are some of the new rules, should you reach State Pension age on or after April 6th 2016: • The full pension amount will be a minimum of £148.40 per week (the actual amount to be decided upon in late 2015) • At least 10 qualifying years

are needed to receive the new State Pension • The total number of qualifying years for eligibility has increased from 30 to 35 Auto enrolment Auto enrolment is new legislation that obliges employers to offer eligible employees a workplace pension. The new scheme, which was introduced in October 2012, is being rolled out to include all UK employers

by February 2018.

Currently, if you earn a minimum annual salary of £10,000, are aged between 22 years and the State Pension age, and work under a contract of employment in the UK, you are entitled to automatic enrolment on a workplace pension.

New legislation regarding annuities Until recently, when you retired you had no other option but to use your pension fund to buy an annuity. Annuities provide you with a fixed income for life, and even though the legislation has now changed, this product may still offer the most stable income for you in retirement.

The 2014 Budget saw changes to pension legislation. From 2015 you will not be forced to buy an annuity with your pension fund, but can use the money in other ways. As a general rule, people choose the ‘income drawdown’ option, an

annuity, or a mixture of the two.

What is income drawdown?

Income drawdown is an alternative to buying an annuity.

You buy stocks, shares and other investments and take a regular income by cashing them in over time, with 25% of each ‘drawdown’ being tax-free.

If you are not risk averse and you have a larger pension pot of £100,000 or more, the rewards can be greater.

Income drawdown is a complicated option with high fees and charges, and it will not be right for everybody, but there is a middle-ground that offers the security of an annuity with a little more flexibility.

An investment-linked annuity There are two types of investment-linked annuity: • Unit-linked: these depend on the performance of stocks, shares and other investments • With-profits: these retain part of your return in highperforming years for use if investment performance declines Charges and fees for pension products can be high, and serve to reduce the overall value of your fund. That’s why you need the advice and guidance of a professional financial expert to cut through the jargon, clearly explain what you are buying, and tell you the true cost of the product.

Tewkesbury Borough approves £9.2m budget and a council tax freeze A council in Gloucestershire has put plans in place to bridge a deficit of £800,000 for 2015/16, while at the same time introducing new measures to support its communities.

On 19 February, Tewkesbury Borough Council‘s Full Council approved its £9.2m budget - which tackles a funding cut of 15.6 per cent to its ongoing central government support grant.

The plans contain a council tax freeze for the fifth year in a row - so the average household will continue to pay £99.36 - or £1.91 per week - for its borough council services for 2015/16.

Alongside the council tax freeze, new initiatives include putting aside an extra £180,000 to expand the council‘s community grant scheme - £30,000 of which would go towards providing a dedicated grants officer to support organisations bidding for regional, national and European funding.

The budget also earmarks £220,000 for disabled facilities grants and to ensure the council‘s successful business support grant scheme can continue, a further £50,000 will be provided to support it.

The budget reflects the success of more than £170,000 of savings made this year through the council‘s Business Transformation programme - which is in excess of the £150,000 target set for this year. This has mainly been achieved through reviews of some council services, including £146,560 through its Revenues and Benefits service review.

As well as securing significant savings, this review entirely removed an eight week backlog of benefit cases and reduced the time it takes to process benefits applications by more than

half. Further service reviews will be carried out in 2015/16.

While the council has planned ahead to ensure its services and communities are protected as much as possible, its budget is under increased pressure from a continued reduction of income from a number of areas, including parking - the council recently adopted a strategy to introduce cheaper parking in council-owned car parks - a reduction in grant support, and increased pressure on council services such as benefits and housing due to the economic climate.

Despite this reality, the council is in a strong position thanks to the forward planning of its member and officer Transform Working Group, which as well as managing the budget proposals looks at ways in which the council can transform itself through the Business Transformation programme to make the council more efficient for its customers. Examples of this include the Public Services Centre at the council offices, which is now home to a wide range of public sector organisations including the DWP‘s Job Centre Plus, the police, staff from Gloucestershire‘s fire and rescue, and the county council‘s Adult and Children‘s services.

Tewkesbury Borough Council‘s Lead Member for Finance Cllr Allen Keyte said: "Since our previous budget, we have introduced a new group to manage our budget proposals, which is made up of members and officers. The work of this group has been nothing short of fantastic and this is clearly reflected in the robust plans we have put forward in this year‘s budget.

"Alongside everything outlined in our budget, we are also starting work on building a brand new leisure centre, we‘ve made parking in our car parks cheaper, and we are developing a real public services hub at our council offices which is helping to make our residents‘ lives easier. As a council we really do put the needs and wants of our customers at the heart of what we do.“ A recent independent assessment reported that Tewkesbury Borough Council is one which is pioneering public sector reform and puts value for money at the forefront of what it does.

Around Britain Saints 1. Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk - King Edmund of East Anglia was supposedly captured, tortured and killed by Danish invaders in 870, and buried in the Saxon town of Beodricesworth. After Edmund’s canonisation, the town became known as Sancte Eadmundes Byrig in the 1000s, and ultimately Bury St Edmunds.

Merthyr Tydfil, Merthyr - The word merthyr is related to the English ‘martyr’, and hence Merthyr Tydfil is named after the local St Tydfil, who was murdered by a band of pagan assassins in the Merthyr area in 480AD. 3. St Albans - St Albans is named after the first known Christian martyr, Alban, who was executed in the town sometime around the 3rd century AD. According to St Bede, Alban was a pagan who converted to Christianity after allowing a cleric fleeing from persecution to shelter at his home.
