Love Local’s Guide Through the Summer Sun Wow, I can't believe it's August already! The schools have broken up for their long summer break now and many of you will be going or have been away on holiday, but don't forget there are also many things happening in and around the area to keep you and the children entertained this summer.
Winchcombe will be hosting its 70th Country Show on the Bank Holiday Monday (see What's On section for more information) while Tewkesbury is getting ready for the Bredon Boat Races (31st August) and its annual Classic Vehicle Festival (18th August). The latter will feature over 1,000 vintage vehicles, live entertainment, stalls, food and more. Love Local Magazines are giving away two pairs of free tickets to this fantastic event, so make

Another suggestion for a great day out would be a trip to Highgrove Royal Gardens in Tetbury. PETS: Three Tips for Looking Af ter Your New Guinea Pig Guinea pigs are relatively low maintenance pets and can be a good choice for families with young children. They’re very social animals, and careful handling from an early age not only helps to build their confidence but also encourages human interaction.
Their needs include a warm, dry and safe space to live, plenty of room to run around, and a nutrient-rich diet – here are a few tips to help your guinea pig feel loved and at home. 1. LIVING Guinea pigs can live indoors or outside but will need protection from direct sunlight and the winter cold if they’re outdoors. Make sure their hutch is protected from predators in the garden and has a separate sleeping area that’s out of sight. 2. EATING Good quality, non-dusty hay should form the major part of a guinea pig’s diet, with grass, leafy greens, fruit, and small quantities of guinea pig mix added every day. It’s worth remembering that a guinea pig’s teeth grow constantly and need to be ground down on the hay or grass that you provide. 3. PLAY According to the RSPCA, guinea pigs are active for up to 20 hours a day, so providing plenty of toys is key to keeping them entertained, especially if you choose one guinea pig rather than a pair. Guinea pigs can live for up to eight years, so this is a long commitment regardless of the lower level of daily care they require when compared with cats and dogs.

Tewkesbury Classic Vehicle Festival – Sun 18 Aug Sunday 18 August will see The Rotary Club of Tewkesbury stage their popular Classic Vehicle Festival at Tewkesbury School Playing Fields.
The event features a spectacular display of over 1000 classic vehicles, from the dawn of the motoring era to pre-war, post-war, American classics, custom cars, hot rods, supercars, motorbikes, those of historic and engineering significance to mass-produced retro runabouts. CHELTENHAM LIONS CLUB The end of June saw former Club President Tom Pettigrew, who transferred to Cheltenham from a Majorcan club, hand over the presidency to Ken Houghton who originally comes from Lancashire. To mark the occasion, members went on a boat trip in Gloucester before enjoying a meal at a dockside restaurant.

The Club continues to support Cheltenham's Oncology Unit by helping out and raising funds at local events. Recent activities included selling raffle tickets at the Cricket Festival and helping at the Velodrome event on the Promenade. On November 16th, the Club will welcome the Treorchy Male Choir back to the Town Hall. All proceeds from the event will be shared between the running costs of the Club's Holiday Caravan in Burnham-onSea and the Acorns Children’s Hospice. Unfortunately, due to rising costs, Acorns will be closing the Walsall Hospice, which is one of their three homes. Money raised will go to the Worcester Hospice which provides care to local to life-limited and life-threatened children and their families.

On the subject of trails: Did you know that Cheltenham BID is running a FREE Hidden Cheltenham Summer Trail for families until Saturday 17th August?
Editor's Tip: Time for a Treasure Trail Are you looking for a fun way to explore your local town or village? Are you going somewhere new (in the UK) this year where you have not been to before? Are you trying to find an enjoyable summer activity for the whole family that does not break the bank? Then try out a Treasure Trail! I first learnt about them on a surprise birthday trip to Wales earlier this year. As somebody who loves puzzles, riddles, mysteries and escape games, I was immediately hooked. The concept is simple but very fun - you go on a selfguided themed treasure hunt (ours was a murder mystery one) that sends you looking for clues around your chosen town or village (in our case Tenby). There are over 1,200 treasure trails all over the UK, you can find 33 in Gloucestershire alone so chances are that some of you may have done one, or indeed several, already.
Each trail consists of an A5 booklet at 8 pages long asking you to solve a series of between 20-25 clues which take you on a scenic walk (about 2 miles long on average). Although many of the walks are accessible, some are not fully suitable for wheelchairs or pushchairs. However, each trail is clearly marked so check the booklet before you start. The trails follow one of three themes and
can be either a Murder Mystery, a Treasure Hunt or Spy Mission. All clues lie hidden within local landmarks, information boards, etc. so are part of the 'local furniture'. This means that: (1) you really get to know the town/village (2) you learn more about its history and (3) you will definitely get a closer look at things you may have missed on a normal walk. It really is a fantastic way of exploring a place and the best part is that you are outside, exercising and socialising whilst having fun. There is no age limit and you can find the clues in your own time. So if you fancy a cup of tea and piece of cake in between, then by all means go ahead! If you ever get stuck, there is an option to text the 'stuck on a clue' helpline which will give you the answer, allowing you to carry on with the trail.
The trails work best for groups of between 2-5 people and cost only ÂŁ6.99. The website recommends to work from one trail booklet to ensure everyone works together as a team. However, there is nothing stopping you from printing off several if you prefer for everyone to have a copy.

Henry was worried about his wife, Annie.
Usually such a sensible, calm woman, Annie had started behaving in what Henry could only call ‘an erratic manner’. For instance, she normally brought him a cup of tea in the middle of the morning; especially when he had been hard at work in the vegetable garden, hoeing between the rows of beetroot and potatoes. The Annie of old would stand and listen to him recount what he had done and what he planned to do. The new Annie was now late in bringing his mid-morning cuppa and instead of waiting until he had drained his cup so she could take it indoors with her, would shove the cup at him in an abrupt way and go back indoors muttering about “a phone call I have to make”. 10

Henry racked his brains trying to recall if he had offended her. Although he would be the last to admit it, it had been known to happen. He thought back over the last couple of weeks. He had put the recycling materials out on time and he had even remembered their recent wedding anniversary (Henry was notoriously bad at remembering special events). What on earth was bothering her? Two days ago, he had followed his wife indoors only to hear her say to someone on the phone: “Henry is in the garden so I can talk…” When she spotted him standing in the kitchen doorway, Annie had promptly taken the phone into the snug where she closed the door. Afterwards, she had said it had been an old schoolfriend who was having ‘women’s problems, but Henry
was having none of it. Something was up and he was determined to get to the bottom of it.
However, casual enquiries were not productive so Henry took to lurking behind doorways. It went against the grain but he was starting to have dark and unwelcome thoughts.
Could his wife be having an affair? Henry had seen the way other men responded to her twinkling blue eyes and lovely smile. There was no doubt she was still a very attractive woman.
The thought of Annie leaving him for another man plunged Henry into a deep depression. The worst thing was that Annie, normally so sensitive to his moods, didn’t even notice he was looking miserable. Things had indeed come to a pretty pass.
Then one morning at breakfast, Annie pushed over an envelope to Henry. Could this be his divorce papers? He wondered miserably. Then he noticed that Annie was smiling at him. Surely, she wouldn’t be looking so radiant if it was bad news? He hesitantly opened the envelope.
“But these are tickets to Gardeners’ Question Time,” said Henry.
“It’s a surprise,” grinned Annie. “You have been wanting to go for years so I’ve arranged for a group of us to go together. Are you pleased?” He beamed at her. The tickets were a wonderful surprise, but all that really mattered was that his Annie was back again.

Maple Glazed Pork with Mediterranean Veg Kebabs
These chunky meat kebabs with a sweet sticky glaze are perfect for a barbeque or al fresco supper served with warmed flatbreads and salad.
Makes 8 Ingredients
750g lean pork fillet, cubed Juice of 1 lemon 2 tbsp olive oil
2 tsp dried oregano
1 garlic clove, crushed
2 large red peppers, deseeded and cubed 2 courgettes, sliced
2 red onions, peeled and cubed 6 tbsp maple syrup
4 tbsp tomato ketchup

1 tbsp mild mustard

Place the cubed pork in a non-metallic container and add the lemon juice, half the oil and the dried oregano and garlic. Toss to coat then cover and leave to marinate in the fridge for 3-4 hours or overnight.
Thread the pork, pepper, courgettes and red onion onto 8 long metal skewers. Cook on a preheated barbeque or under a hot grill for 10-15 minutes, turning frequently, until the pork is cooked through and the vegetables are lightly charred.
Meanwhile, mix the remaining oil, maple syrup, ketchup and mustard together and brush all over the kebabs for the last 2-3 minutes of cooking time, until glazed and sticky. Serve immediately.
Marinating the meat in lemon juice and oil will make it extra tender. Add some chopped chilli for a spicy touch or add 2 tbsp light soy sauce, if liked.
Auction Anecdote It’s pleasant to be able to talk about a piece of furniture performing well at auction for a change since (as many of you know) antique furniture does not often take centre stage in the saleroom these days. The item in question was a superb Carlton House desk - so called after the style was initially designed by George Hepplewhite for George IV at his London residence ‘Carlton House’. This late 19thcentury example was in superb condition and featured elaborate ivorine marquetry panels depicting scenes of putti at play amongst foliage and scrollwork borders. There were however two additional plus points which made the desk even more desirable. Firstly, it was stamped by the London makers Edwards & Roberts, which guaranteed its quality as the firm was well known for making desks of this type. Secondly, the provenance of the piece, which had originally come from Flaxley Abbey – a stately home near Blaisden and the seat of the CrawleyBoevey family, was excellent. As the furniture had been passed down through to the current vendor she was able to provide a lovely black and white photograph of the original owner of the desk for whom it was bought as a gift. On auction day the desk was bought online by a local antiques dealer for £1,000 - still a very reasonable price for such an eye-catching item of fine quality. Smiths’ next sale is on the 30th of August. It is a particularly good sale to enter items into as prices are always high after the summer lull. The event included a very informative and well-presented 90-minute tour of the gardens and a delicious afternoon tea in the beautiful Orchard Room. It is hard to believe that when The Prince of Wales first arrived at Highgrove in 1980, the garden consisted only of a brown path, a lawn, a few thorn bushes and an oak tree, which left the house very exposed to the countryside and little room for privacy.
Greeting visitors today, however, is a completely different scene. The Georgian building of neo-classical design (which dates back to 1825 and, following a fire, was rebuilt in 1894) is now surrounded by a series of 18
interlinked, highly individual organic gardens, boasting a rich variety of flora and fauna.
While the gardens have been created and developed with the help from some of Britain’s finest designers (Head Gardener, Debs Goodenough, among them), they very much reflect The Prince’s own designs and gardening ideals. All gardens are run in an environmentally sustainable way and revolve around the principles of organic gardening, composting and recycling. HRH The Prince of Wales likes to get actively involved in the gardening process and maintains a close relationship with his gardeners, many of whom have worked at the gardens for years.
'A garden is a reflection of a person's soul' HRH The Prince of Wales The Royal Gardens have a very private and intimate feel about them. They are truly unique and reflect a deep commitment to nature. Unlike many other gardens of this scale,
which are open to the public, the gardens at Highgrove are kept very natural and pure, nothing is overly manicured or pruned.
Each garden has a variety of imaginative and sometimes playful elements and personal touches to it. One horticultural practice The Prince of Wales is particular fond of is topiary - from eccentric geometric shapes, to crowns, elephants, and even snails - at Highgrove Royal Gardens you can find it all! There are also many cultural influences to be found. Plaques, busts, sculptures, pots, vases and other decorative items from around the world, usually gifted to The Prince of Wales on his travels, have found creative ways into the gardens. We thoroughly recommend a visit, even if you have been before as the gardens are constantly changing.
Tours take place from April to October each year and need to be pre-booked at www.highgrovegardens.com. This year, for the first time, visitors are allowed take photographs of specific parts of the gardens.
All proceeds from the sale of Highgrove products, garden tours and events are donated to The Prince of Wales's Charitable Foundation whose aim it is to transform lives and build sustainable communities.

Add Some Vertical Interest Whether your garden is large or small, long, wide or has a completely uneven shape, you can guarantee that it will benefit from having some height added to it – and what better way to do this than by erecting an arch or arbour? The great thing is that, of course, any vertical structure you install in your garden makes for a new planting opportunity too… So what are the advantages of a bit of vertical structural interest (aside from the plants it can support) and how can you make the very best of them in your garden? Position an arbour so that it overlooks a good view or particularly attractive part of the garden and you instantly create a fabulous place to sit and relax. You can also use an arch or even an arbour as a means of dividing your garden into one or more rooms. This age-old designer’s trick can make your garden seem a lot larger and more interesting. Chosen carefully, arches and arbours themselves are good looking and can be a feature in their own right, so don’t 22
necessarily go for the first one you see; shop around and remember that if you clothe them with climbers, you are adding to their appeal.
Some plants look great but others have another secret ingredient: scented climbers, like some of the rambling or climbing roses, or honeysuckle or jasmine, can totally transform the whole garden as their perfume wafts out for you to enjoy.
If an arbour is situated in a sunny spot and you have fairly free-draining soil, why not plant an area around it with lavenders? Then you can enjoy both the way it looks and the perfume and aromatic leaves as you sit and relax after a stressful day. In sunny positions, thymes or camomile can be used to great effect on the approach to your archway or arbour – when your feet gently crush the thyme or camomile lawn, a fantastic aroma will be released.
Arches and arbours are available in a wide range of materials, but by far the most popular are those made from wood or metal.
To a large extent, it is a case of shopping around to find something that suits your garden style, the purpose you have in mind for it and, of course, your budget. I am a great fan of wood or metal because I find that they both fit in well with the sort of gardening style I like and, of course, you can always use one of the numerous and readily available wood stains or paints to transform it from its natural subtly coloured state to a bright blue, rich red or pretty well any colour you fancy!
Although it is possible to construct an arch or an arbour from scratch yourself, you will be amazed at the range of readymade arbours and kits for both arches and arbours that are now available. If you choose wood, do ensure that it is a wood which is either naturally going to resist decay – western red cedar or a hardwood
such as oak would be my first choice, with Douglas fir or larch a close second. Alternatively, you can choose a softwood which has been tanalised or pressuretreated with a wood preservative, which will usually be somewhat cheaper.
By choosing a wooden arch, perhaps with a rounded top and trellis up the sides, you ensure a really good planting space, and this somewhat more rustic look fits in well with a particularly informal garden. Many of these are also relatively inexpensive and easy to install.
To find out just what’s available, it is well worth paying a visit to several local garden centres or taking a look at mailorder products from the numerous arch and arbour websites, which make window shopping even easier! By Pippa Greenwood

For the first time this year, ATCM (The Association of Town & City Management), which awards the Purple Flag to successful locations, ran awards to highlight the very best places. Cheltenham was nominated under the ‘appeal’ category for the most popular destinations and has now been named the winner.
ATCM said Cheltenham was chosen because of its extensive range of restaurants; the accommodation available; the variety of pubs and bars, many with live music; late night venues suitable for all ages; good use by the public of outside spaces, that were well lit at night; and the number of public buildings that are floodlit, highlighting the architecture around the town. They also said the town had a strong earlyevening offer, which was suitable for all ages. All true – and it’s important that has now been recognised.

Travelling can take a real toll on your phone or tablet’s battery, and you can’t always be sure you’ll find a charger when you need one. Plans for the new secondary school in Leckhampton recently released for comment didn’t seem to include solar panels on the roof. What about heating? Surely, not a gas boiler? I ask because, with a climate change emergency, we have to consider these things now if we are to build a sustainable future for our children and grandchildren. Walking or cycling to and from school is one of the most practical ways of helping the next generation to avoid the obesity crisis. They will also need clean air to breathe, well away from the exhaust fumes produced by the current generation of cars. So where are the cycleways to go?

But building new, sustainable, buildings in a town like Cheltenham is a challenge. No more so than the new Innovation Hub that was recently approved by the Planning Committee in the Chester Walk carpark near the Minster (see 19/00204/FUL). Constructed from recycled shipping containers, it boasts solar panels and batteries. Historic England supports the proposal, but “believes that the churchyard is a wholly under-appreciated, under-utilised space with huge potential to be a real historic asset to the town”. Currently, most surrounding buildings turn their backs to the church. Let us hope that this new development will be the start of opening up the whole area as a space to be enjoyed by us all.
