Getting More Done in a Day

Soon we are going to be having a National Stress Awareness Day. I wonder if this day is to make us aware of stress and if we haven’t got any perhaps we should go out and get some. Seriously, stress and pressure can be okay if it is managed as it helps us to new levels of performance.

If it is not managed it can become a nasty serious illness that requires expert medical treatment which I am not qualified to discuss. Surely, prevention is far better than the cure.

The three biggest causes of stress at work are: 1. The mismanagement of time.

People being not trained how to manage their time, unable to prioritise and not having a system that reminds them of what should be done in a day.

2. People being given a new job, role or task and not being trained how to do it causes massive stress. They don’t perform the new job, role etc and then try to hide that they have not done it and distress follows.

3. Sheer work overload which is rare in the private sector but common in the public sector particularly when there is only a once a year appraisal. A really good manager or boss is appraising, guiding and helping people and most particularly watching for signs of stress and the inability to cope.

So let me address number one, time management. There are only 24 hours in a day so we cannot really manage time all we can do is manage ourselves to time.

Here is an easy three step technique to enable you to do just that.

1. At the end of the day write down all of the most important things you want to do or should do the next day.

2. Now number that list in order of importance. In other words the most important job becomes number one.

3. The following day go straight to number one and do it. Then on to number two and so on.

Yes this plan is incredibly simplistic but it is an outstandingly successful method of time management guaranteed to reduce stress.

If you only complete three tasks out of 20 they are of course the most important. Every day can become a day of achievement as against a day of mere activity AND you will be less stressed AND more motivated.

Happiness is a ticked off “to do” list.

The French kings of the 17th and 18th centuries had enormous influence on aristocratic interiors.

For elegance, luxury and splendour, look no further than the styles of Louis XIV, XV and XVI, writes Katherine Sorrell The year: 1681. The place: the royal court in France. And, according to King Louis XIV, known as the Sun King, who had assumed power two years earlier: ‘There is nothing that indicates more clearly the magnificence of great princes than their superb palaces

and their precious furniture.’

The king was inspired to adapt a small hunting lodge just outside Paris, extend it, and fill it with jaw-droppingly splendid decoration and furnishings, all in order to glorify his monarchy. Its style was, of course, the most up-to-date possible, a new fashion known as Baroque - dramatically dazzling and opulent, epitomised by jewellike colours, large furniture in bulbous shapes, trompe l’oeil paintwork and glittering silver, gold and crystal to surprise and impress. The new palace was called Versailles.

The interior of Versailles, designed by Charles Lebrun, was filled with furniture made in specialist workshops by the finest native and foreign artisans. Proportioned for enormous rooms, pieces were carved and gilded in heavy, scrolling shapes, upholstered with velvet and brocade, and inlaid with exotic materials such as marble, silver, ivory, lapis lazuli and agate. There were fabrics woven with silver

or gold thread, lavish rugs and walls hung with tapestries or covered in marble or mirror.

Perhaps most extreme of all was the specially commissioned furniture and lighting made of silver. Every tiny detail of this grand, formal and ornate design had been considered. It was utterly magnificent, and immediately became the envy of every other court in Europe.

Fashions are forever changing, however, and, inevitably, there was a reaction against the monumental style of Baroque. By the turn of the 18th century Louis XIV was urging a ‘graceful and airy’ style on his granddaughter-inlaw. After his death in 1715 the court moved to Paris, where a less ceremonial lifestyle developed, with smaller rooms and lighter furniture. Known as Rococo (because shells and rocks – rocailles – featured so frequently), it was frivolous and exuberant, all delicate curves and asymmetrical lines while, overall, homes were arranged so as to be comfortable rather than impressive, colours soft and feminine, and patterns delicate. The typical Rococo home featured elaborate plasterwork and carved, painted and gilded wooden panels, walls hung with silk or hand-painted wallpapers imported from China, all reflected in ornamental mirrors.

Making A Pest Of Themselves

by Pippa Greenwood They might be small but aphids (also widely known as greenfly and blackfly) can do an awful lot of damage to just about every plant in your garden - and greenhouse, conservatory and windowsill for that matter. They are one of the most common and widespread garden pests, with more than five hundred different species found in the United Kingdom alone.

Greenfly and blackfly vary massively in colour, from green or black to grey, yellow, pink, brown or kaki. The majority are about 2mm long Most damage is done throughout spring and summer but there are aphids feeding somewhere pretty well throughout the year. In sheltered parts of your garden, especially in the warmer counties or in greenhouses and conservatories, some can be found even during the cooler winter months. So what makes these tiny pests so successful and so damaging to our precious plants? The main reason is that they can breed rapidly and so their numbers build up incredibly fast and this is often done asexually or without need of a male. For much of the year females are predominant and Page 16

give birth to huge numbers of genetically identical offspring.

I always think of this as like a Russian doll – inside a female aphid there will be young aphid, and inside this there will be an aphid embryo. Later in the season male aphids may be produced and these then mate with the females.

The symptoms they cause vary, but include leaf yellowing or other brightly coloured discolouration, puckering, poor growth and stunting. As they feed on plants, aphids may transmit virus infections, so virus symptoms may develop too. The plant sap on which the aphids feed has an extremely high sugar content; in fact it is so sugary that the aphids cannot digest it all, so their excreta is very sticky and sugary. This is called ‘honeydew’ and you may have noticed it beneath aphid-infested plants such as lime trees or as a sticky layer on roses and other plants.

Because it is so sugary, honeydew attracts harmless black ‘sooty moulds’ which make the leaves look as if someone has sprinkled soot on them. As aphids increase in size they shed their skins and the cast skins are often easy to spot on host plants – they look rather like the

discarded pyjamas often seen on a teenager’s bedroom floor!

If you grow roses you’ll have discovered that there are several species of aphid which may attack them, often forming dense colonies on shoot tips, new leaf growth and flower buds. These aphids are mostly green, pinkish or yellowish in colour and up to 3mm long. There is usually a lot of honeydew followed by sooty mould, as well as stunting and distortion of the leaves.

If vegetables are more your thing then you may see the black bean aphid as it forms dense colonies especially at the shoot tips and beneath the leaves of broad beans in the spring, which causes weakening and a huge drop in the number of those tasty pods. It also attacks globe artichokes, dahlias, poppies and nasturtiums. In the spring the aphid feeds on Philadelphus and Viburnum.

If you pinch out the aphidencrusted shoot tips on beans the problem is often solved.

pyracantha and cotoneaster.

Colonies of the aphid covered with white, waxy, fluffy fibres develop on the bark, especially near pruning cuts on older stems, or on younger stems where they also cause swellings on the stem. Another common problem on fruit is the currant Blister Aphid, a small, pale green aphid which feeds beneath the leaves, mostly of redcurrants, with pale yellow or reddish blisters forming in spring and summer.

It is pretty well impossible to garden without aphids causing some grief – I for one have never managed it. So what can you do? There are a number of different ways that you can reduce aphid numbers in your garden or greenhouse. Encouraging naturally occurring predators such as blue tits, ladybirds,

hoverflies and lacewings will all help. In some situations it is also worth introducing biological controls and these work especially well in an enclosed area such as a greenhouse or conservatory but will often have a noticeable effect in warmer summers outside too. Aphid predators such as the larva of the midge Aphidoletes and even ladybirds, can all be purchased, as can the tiny parasitic wasp Aphidius.

Ladybirds (available as native British ladybird adults or as their young or larvae from my website, www. pippagreenwood.com) are perfect for using on aphid outbreaks anywhere in the garden from pots and borders to hanging baskets and hedges. The great thing with these is that, once

established they will start to breed, multiply and add to the natural ladybird population.

There are a number of different chemicals (including organic or ‘green’ ones such as those based on fatty acids or plant oils) available for controlling aphid pests too, but not all are suitable for use on every plant, so check the label carefully before buying or using, and always follow the instructions carefully.

Golden Years Memories of 50 Years Ago by Ted Bruning and trying to curry favour with the young.

Quite a few middle-class breakfasts must have been ruined when the newspapers of 11th June 1965 were opened. For the news was truly shocking. The Beatles were to receive MBEs in the Birthday Honours List!

It’s difficult at this distance – and almost impossible for people who weren’t around at the time – to realise what a big deal this was. And if anything it seems comical that so many retired colonels sent their medals back to the Palace in disgust.

What blimps these outraged fuddy-duddies must have been, we think today; and the apocalyptic language with which they expressed their horror – the Beatles were “vulgar numbskulls”, snarled one; Britain would fall “even deeper into international ridicule and contempt”, howled another; and the word “debased” appeared over and over again – makes them seem even more so.

As for the newly-elected Labour Prime Minister Harold Wilson, who had put the Fab Four up for their gongs, he was vilified as subverting the honours system

But how wrong those criticisms were, for this was not an act of subversion, but of absorption.

The Beatles had become hugely successful dollar earners, with nine US number one singles and four US number one albums to their credit so far, as well as the creation of an enormous American market for other British acts; and that made them part of the Establishment and entitled to all the honours that came with it.

The Beatles themselves sensed this and seem to have been uneasy over it. John Lennon reportedly worried about being seen as a sell-out and had to be talked into accepting his MBE by Brian Epstein; and the Lovable Moptops famously tried to make a pantomime of their investiture that October, turning up in John’s psychedelic RollsRoyce, wearing unconventional suits, smoking a joint in the Palace loos (later and rather unconvincingly denied), and trying (and failing) to banter with the Queen.

perhaps it was the shocking headlines of 11th June 1965 and the events that followed that spurred the Beatles into escaping from the curse of light entertainment – of Saturday morning children’s TV shows, of guest slots on Lulu (or, worse, a show of their own), of Royal Command Performances, of touring unto exhaustion. Once “Help!” was finished later that year they put the three-minute love-songs (albeit the superior and beautifully crafted threeminute love-songs) of the first half of the career behind them and started exploring their talent in earnest.

And then Brian Epstein died; and although his death was tragically untimely (and although he was no showbiz monster to compare with the likes of Larry Parnes or Simon Cowell) it did finally complete the process that had started at Buckingham palace of freeing the Beatles from the light entertainment treadmill that had ruined so many of their great contemporaries – notably Dusty Springfield – and left them with nothing to do but create. So perhaps, ultimately, we have Harold Wilson to thank for The White Album, Abbey Road, and Let It Be.

Four years later John confirmed that he had never been happy with the whole business when he returned his medal – without a trace of irony! – in protest at Britain’s involvement in the Vietnam and Biafran wars. So

… But Is It Acupuncture?

With so many rival forms of ‘alternative therapy’ available, it is important to beware of imitations, says Pam Everitt.

W

hen we are ill or in pain and seeking expert medical help, we rightly expect doctors and others who treat us to be properly trained and qualified.

But what about healers who work outside the framework of conventional medicine, such as acupuncturists, homeopaths or reflexologists? How can we be sure they have right training and qualifications and meet the kind of standards we would expect from health professionals?

This is a subject close to my heart. Since 2001 I have studied and practised as a traditional acupuncturist. As a registered member of the British Acupuncture Council (BAcC), I run clinics in Newent, Cheltenham and Stroud, treating patients for a range of conditions and ailments. Before qualifying, I took a three-year degree course at the College of Traditional Acupuncture in Leamington, followed by two years’ postgraduate study. I still take part in training and professional development every year – it’s something I have to do in order to receive the all-important BAcC stamp of approval.

As someone schooled in classical ‘Five Element’ acupuncture, I’m particularly concerned about the spread of treatments commonly known as ‘Western Medical Acupuncture’ and ‘Myofascial Trigger Point Acupuncture (also known as ‘dry needling acupuncture’). These are widely practised by

doctors, nurses, physiotherapists and midwives within the NHS. They are described as a form of acupuncture, but while the practitioners are medically trained, most have little knowledge of, or training in, the principles which underlie traditional Chinese acupuncture.

Dry needling v. acupuncture I was originally drawn to acupuncture because it treats the whole person. In the right hands, it is painless and effective – a highly sophisticated form of medicine that is recognised and practised throughout the world.

In traditional Chinese medicine, the symptoms we feel when we are ill, such as a sore throat or a swollen gland, are a sign that the body is out of balance. Acupuncturists aim to correct the imbalance and encourage the body’s natural healing mechanisms.

This is done by inserting ultra-fine needles at special points located along channels called ‘meridians’ which carry vital energy, called ‘Qi’, throughout the body.

‘Dry needling’ is a recent development that is used alongside disciplines such as physiotherapy, and within the framework of a Western-style medical diagnosis. Usually billed as a treatment for headaches or muscle pain, it involves inserting a needle into a ‘trigger point’, a tender spot in a tight band of muscle which causes pain when pressed or squeezed. This creates an entirely different

needling experience for the patient and bears no resemblance to the feeling created by a traditional acupuncturist. Dry needling does not seek to regulate Qi or address the underlying imbalance that caused the symptoms to arise.

Of course, dry needling has its supporters, and quite a few people claim to have been helped by it. I do not doubt that certain forms of dry needling can be effective – but it isn’t acupuncture as I understand and practise it. Finance Saving for Children What are the Best Options?

By Ann Haldon Children’s savings accounts provide a great way to build a nest egg for later life, perhaps for driving lessons or to fund a gap year, and are a good way to introduce the subject of money management.

We look at three savings options below that could be ideal for your child. These are products that incorporate a range of features and benefits, including tax-free status, instant access, and longer savings terms.

So let’s start with a product that was first introduced in 2011:

Junior ISAs

Junior ISAs are available to children under the age of 18 who don’t already have a Child Trust Fund. New legislation has recently been introduced to allow the transfer of monies from a Child Trust Fund into a Junior ISA, however, and this is due to take effect from April 2015.

The contribution limit for a Junior ISA is £4,080 for the 2015-16 tax year, and there are two types of account available: • Cash Junior ISA: offering tax-free interest and instant access • Stocks and Shares Junior ISA: cash is invested in stocks and shares, with no tax paid on dividends or capital growth Children are entitled to open one of each of these accounts, and although Page 34

parents or guardians can open and manage them, the money belongs to the child.

Withdrawals by children are not allowed until they turn 18, but they can manage their own accounts when they reach 16 years of age.

The Junior ISA will be in the child’s name, but parents and guardians opening the account are the ‘registered contacts’ as far as the bank or building society is concerned.

NS&I Children’s Bonds

These are tax-free investments that run for a 5-year term. They can be purchased by a parent, guardian, grandparent or great grandparent on behalf of a child, and each ‘issue’ has its own guaranteed rate of interest which is paid at the end of the term.

The minimum investment amount for these Bonds is £25, with £3,000 being the maximum amount allowed per issue.

Interest is calculated daily and added to the account each year, so that the child also benefits from compound interest.

Children’s Savings Accounts

These types of account can be opened with as little as £1, with most bank and building societies offering at least one savings account for children.

In most cases money can be withdrawn with no notice.

Once a child reaches the

age of seven they may be able to manage the account themselves, which is a great way for them to learn how to deal with their money.

There are two different types of children’s savings accounts, and you can open more than one: • Easy access: the interest rate will probably be lower with an easy or instant access account, but money can be withdrawn or deposited with no restrictions. These accounts are popular with children as many of them offer free gifts, including piggy banks and toys.

• Regular savings: interest rates will be slightly higher for this type of account, but money is not accessible and you need to make regular monthly deposits into the account. If any payments are missed you may suffer a reduction of interest.

Which savings account you choose for your child depends on your own circumstances.

Cake and Bake Vanilla and Chocolate Panna Cotta This velvety smooth, vanilla flavoured Italian set cream is simple to make but tastes divine. For a less rich dessert replace half the double cream with full-fat milk.

Ingredients: • 600ml double cream • 2 tsp vanilla extract • 2 pared strips of lemon rind • 55g caster sugar • 1 x 12g sachet powdered gelatine • 50g good quality dark chocolate, finely grated • Chocolate dipped strawberries, to serve (see TIP)

Serves 4 Ready in 30 mins, plus cooling and setting time

1. Place the cream, vanilla extract, lemon rind and caster sugar in a pan and bring slowly to the boil. Remove from the heat.

2. Meanwhile place 4 tbsp of boiling water in a small heatproof cup or jug and sprinkle over the powdered gelatine. Leave for a few minutes until spongy then stir until dissolved. If the gelatine doesn’t completely dissolve, heat in the microwave on Full Power for a few seconds or sit the cup or jug in a pan of gently simmering water and stir until completely clear. Leave to cool for 10 minutes.

3. Stir a little of the hot cream into the gelatine mixture then stir back into the rest of the cream. Leave the mixture to cool for 30 minutes. Remove the strips of lemon rind and pour the mixture into four individual 150ml pudding basins. Place on a tray and chill in the fridge for 6 hours or overnight until set.

4.To serve, dip each pudding basin into a bowl of hot water for a few seconds then turn out onto a serving plate. Sprinkle the grated chocolate over each panna cotta and decorate with a sprig of mint or lemon balm. Serve with the chocolate dipped strawberries.

TIP

To make the chocolate dipped strawberries, pick firm ripe strawberries and use a good quality dark chocolate (one with at least 50% cocoa solids). Melt the chocolate in a heatproof bowl set over a pan of simmering water. Remove the bowl from the heat and stir until smooth. Holding each strawberry by the green calyx, dip into the melted chocolate then shake to allow the excess chocolate to drip back into the bowl. Place the dipped strawberries onto a baking sheet lined with baking paper and leave in a cool place until the chocolate has set. Serve on day of dipping.

Cheltenham Safe launches new website Cheltenham Safe launched its new website this week along with its revised Reducing Alcohol Related Violence (RARV) codes of practice for the town’s licensees. www.cheltenham-safe.org

Cheltenham Safe is Cheltenham’s retail crime reduction scheme working in partnership with the police, borough council, trade and Chamber of Commerce to prevent crime and antisocial behaviour in the day and night time economies through two schemes, Daysafe and Nightsafe.

Daysafe is the day time retail crime prevention scheme linking businesses with the police to quickly detect and prevent crime. Daysafe currently has around 85 local retail businesses signed up to the scheme.

The Nightsafe scheme is the night time economy group of bars, clubs and other alcohol lead premises that exist to reduce crime, disorder and anti-social behaviour in the night time

economy. Night Safe currently has over 70 signed up members.

The launch of the new website also included the publishing of the updated Reducing Alcohol Related Violence (RARV) codes of practice. The first set of RARV codes of practice was published in 2007, first such set of codes produced in the UK and were acknowledged as best practice by the Home Office.

These codes of practice were completely revised in 2014 and the newly published codes set out common sense and practical crime reduction measures and advice for all sectors of the night-time economy.

The new website also features other aspects of Cheltenham Safe’s work including Best Bar None and the local crime exclusion scheme.

The new website was funded from funding received by the Gloucestershire Police and Crime Commissioner’s Safe Days, Safe Nights fund.

Colin Pilsworth, Cheltenham Safe Coordinator, said: “The Police and Crime Commissioner’s funding has enabled us to develop a website which provides a single point of reference for all aspects of community safety relating to Cheltenham’s thriving retail and night-time economies.”

Martin Surl, Gloucestershire Police and Crime Commissioner, said: “Reducing crime is not the sole responsibility of the Police.

New planters and cycle stands for Suffolk Street and the Bath Road Three new planters and four cycle stands are being installed on Suffolk Street and the Bath Road this week to help improve the urban street scene in the area.

Two planters will be installed on either side of Bath Road on the newly-constructed build outs opposite the Co-op. The third of the planters and the cycle stands will be installed on Suffolk Street next to Bath Road.

This is part of a number of environmental improvements in and near the Bath Road under the Connect Streets scheme, which is a joint initiative of several community groups - notably Cheltenham Connect and the St Philip and St James Area Residents Association, the Bath Road Traders Association and the council.

Funding for these initiatives is coming from Gloucestershire County Council, through its Local Sustainable Transport Fund, the final elements of Cheltenham Borough Council’s Environmental Fund and from the St Philip and St James Area Residents Association. The Bath Road Co-op is helping in kind.

Wilf Tomaney, townscape manager at Cheltenham Borough Council, said: “It’s great to see the planters

and cycle stands being installed as they will really enhance the area.

It’s a positive example of partners working together to improve the local environment.”

Cllr Will Windsor Clive, Cabinet member for fire, planning and infrastructure at Gloucestershire County Council, added: “The county council has been able to help fund the planters and cycle stands as they are a great example of a local community working together to keep their streets bright and welcoming.”

Adrian Phillips, chair of Connect Streets project, commented: “This scheme has been undertaken

by Connect Streets, which is a partnership of the traders, the local community and the council. We have already planted ten trees, installed an art work outside the Exmouth Arms, and decorated the Bath Road roundabout and all 19 of the utility boxes in the street. To complement the planters that we have installed at the roundabout, we are putting in three more.

Summer Solstice Summer Solstice (sometimes also referred to as Midsummer) falls between June 21st-22nd, and celebrates the longest day and shortest night of the year, the sun reaching its highest point in the northern hemisphere, and the very pinnacle of summer-time.

Midsummer is celebrated with a variety of different traditions and celebrations around the world – and indeed around our own country, with parties commonly held from the Highlands and Islands of Scotland to the Cornish coast, and in particular at Stonehenge, where tens of thousands gather every year for an all-day festival, watching the sun rise early on 21st June and celebrating the longest day with everything from quiet observations to full-on festivities.

The lighting of bonfires often forms a big part of the culture, celebrating the burning light of the sun and mirroring it, a tradition stemming from pagan and Celtic roots.

In addition to having huge Pagan significance, the solstice is relevant too to some branches of Buddhism and those who practice Yoga, in which Sun Salutations often play an important role and the sun is something very much worthy of reverence.

The solstice can be explained by the angle of the earth’s axis, the tilt of which is the reason we experience our four seasons each year. When the axis tilts towards the sun during the summer months we know here in the UK, winter is of course in the southern hemisphere, rotating entirely by the time we reach the opposite end of the year.
