Local Magazines Published by Glos Directories - connecting local businesses with local people

Dear Reader, Welcome to the September issue of your Local Community Magazine. It won’t be long now until the children are all back at school. Is that a sigh of relief I can hear or do you wish the holidays could be a little bit longer? I usually can’t wait for school to start again but this year I could have done with a few more days as we’ve been so busy! As you can see when paging through the magazine, we’re jam-packed with local businesses and local events happening in and around the area. If you would like to add your business to the magazine or an upcoming event to our “What’s on” section, please email office@glosdirectories.co.uk for more details. A date for your diary this month is the Bloor Homes Cheltenham Festival of Cycling which takes place on Saturday 9th September. The festival involves a series of town-wide events and zones and incorporates the finish line of the OVO Energy Tour of Britain Stage 7, which will bring 120 elite cyclists racing through town. For more information on the festival have a look at our "What's on" section and visit www.cheltenhamcyclingfestival.org.uk. Have a great month and see you back here in October! Best wishes, Vicky Muller

Lifeblood of the Villages: Country Carriers Part Two The heyday of the country carrier, taking the villagers to town and running errands for those who could not go, extended from the middle of the 19th century to the years after the Great War. In this, my second article, I will focus on Cheltenham in the year 1880 to provide a snapshot of this once important element of rural life which has almost passed out of living memory. In 1880 fifty different carriers operated one hundred and fourteen journeys each week into and out of the town. They came from a wide area, from Broadway in the north to Northleach in the east, Cirencester in the south and Apperley in the west. Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays were by far the most popular days with only Gloucester and Winchcombe enjoying a daily carrier service. In Cheltenham Thursday was (and is) market day but it was the spa town's shops which provided the main reason for the Tuesday and Saturday visits. So who were the carriers? We know from their names that all but two of them were men. It must have been relatively straightforward for the enterprising to set themselves up with a horse and cart, perhaps from a previous owner. This must have been quite

common, for not a single carrier in 1880 had been operating in 1870 and a decade later only George Troughton, who took over the George Inn in Winchcombe in 1885, and William Oldacre, a farmer from Bishop's Cleeve, were still operating. Both had another occupation, as did nearly all the other carriers. You couldn't make a living from being just a carrier. As I remarked in my previous article, the destination in the town was one of ten inns, mostly strung out along the High Street, well away from the prestigious Queen's Hotel and the Promenade and even avoiding the town's premier coaching inn, The Plough, where the Regent Arcade now stands. The inns have practically all vanished and only The Old Swan at the eastern end of the High Street is still recognisable as a carriers' inn with a large gateway leading into its yard. It is not difficult to imagine the carriers emerging from that gateway during the late afternoon and setting off on their journey back to the Cotswold villages. In fact, four o'clock on Thursday market day saw a mass departure of carriers from the inns of the town, similar to the 2.00pm departures from the Black

and White coach station almost a century later, but much more leisurely! By 1950 the age of the carrier was ending. The more farsighted had turned to motor transport and the yard of The Plough and the car park in Rodney Road had largely replaced the inns as stabling points. Some readers might remember Bowles of Ford, Gilletts of Winchcombe and Perretts of Shipton Oliffe who had all been carriers before changing their cart for a motor coach. So, too, did Pulhams of Bourton on the Water, who still operate today. I will end this brief account of Cheltenham's country carriers with this amusing reminiscence which appeared in the Gloucestershire Echo in March 1954 following a report of the death of one of the last carriers: “There was a Mr Swallow who lived at Guiting Power and traded between there and Cheltenham. My wife tells me she was a passenger one night with him and they simply could not get the horse or driver past Cider Jack's as it was called (opposite the Dowdeswell Reservoir). After waiting till she lost her patience, she went into the bar and told him in no uncertain manner what she thought of him, to the extent if Mr Swallow did not swallow what was left mighty quick she was heading back to Cheltenham! After all this, she would have been lucky if she wasn't asked to get out and walk up Dowdeswell Hill or even push the cart! - David Aldred

Wiggett's carrier's cart linked Prestbury to Cheltenham c.1870. Unfortunately, the background is so blurred the location is uncertain (Tim Petchey collection) Page 6

Lamb Koftas with Minted Couscous Serves 4

Ready in 50 minutes

This flavour-packed dish is great for a late summer lunch or dinner. Serve with warmed flatbreads and tzatziki, if liked.

Ingredients: FOR THE KOFTAS • 350g lean minced lamb ½ red onion, finely chopped • 1 garlic clove, crushed • 2tsp ground coriander • 2tsp ground cumin • 1tsp smoked paprika • 2tbsp fresh chopped coriander • Squeeze of lemon juice FOR THE COUSCOUS • 225g couscous • 3tbsp olive oil • 1tbsp lemon juice • ¼ cucumber, finely diced • 4 spring onions, trimmed and finely chopped • 3tbsp fresh chopped mint • 4 tomatoes, cut into chunks • Lemon wedges and mint sprigs to garnish Page 8

To make the koftas, place the mince, onion, garlic, spices, fresh coriander and lemon juice in a food processor. Season well with salt and freshly ground black pepper, then process until very finely minced. Divide the mixture into 12 and using clean damp hands, shape each into an oval. Push each oval onto the end of a long wooden skewer (see tip) and place on a foil-lined grill pan. Cook under a preheated medium grill for 8-10 minutes, turning frequently, until browned and cooked through. Meanwhile, make the couscous. Place the couscous in a heatproof bowl and pour over 250ml boiling water. Cover and leave to soak for about 10 minutes, until all the water has been absorbed. Fluff the couscous with a fork and stir in the olive oil, lemon juice, cucumber, spring onions and mint. Season to taste with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Serve the koftas with the couscous and tomatoes, garnished with lemon wedges and mint sprigs.

TIP Soak the wooden skewers in cold water for about 20 minutes to prevent the ends burning under the grill.

Houseplants Go Home by Pippa Greenwood

Most houseplants need to be just that, plants in houses, but come the summer it usually gives them a real boost to get the higher natural light levels, refreshing (relatively warm) rainfall and seriously fresh air. But now that September is here it is time to bring them indoors – colder nights will cause damage, especially to some of the more tender varieties. Before bringing them in, check your plants over. Use a sharp pair of scissors to remove dead, damaged or dying leaves, cutting back neatly into clean, healthy growth. Next inspect the stems, foliage and any flowers for pests and diseases - it always pays to bring houseplants in totally clean. Look out for white powdery mildew deposits, often accompanied by a bit of leaf yellowing, and check for greyish fuzzy fungal patches caused by the notorious Botrytis or grey mould. Also look for pests like scale insects - tiny brownish elliptical insects which feed beneath leaves or on soft stems, often producing copious quantities of sticky, sugary honeydew - or aphids, which may be found clustered on the more tender, Page 12

newer growth. These must be dealt with before the plants go indoors, as once inside the pests will flourish in the warmer, more protected conditions, and will soon multiply and may even spread. Most problems like these, if caught early, can be dealt with by using scissors or secateurs to snip off infected areas, or by some careful picking off by hand. If you find scale insects, aphids or fluffy patches of mealy bug, there is a brilliant environmentallyfriendly biocontrol that is also safe for you and your pets. For more information, visit www. pippagreenwood.com/products/ protect-your-crops. Next, inspect the pots, including the surface of the compost and beneath the base and rim of the pot itself. If you can, and as long as the plant won’t be damaged in the process, gently ease it out of its pot and check the root ball - this is the perfect place for stowaways like vine weevils, slugs and snails. Not the sort of house guests you or your plants would appreciate, I’m sure. When the check over is complete, gently scrape away the uppermost surface of the compost and replace with the

same quantity of fresh, similar compost, wipe down the sides of the pot and take your plants inside, taking care not to put them anywhere which is too hot, too dry or too draughty for their liking. Once your old favourites are safely re-installed in their old positions and are free from unwanted guests, you may like to treat yourself to a new houseplant or two. There are some wonderful (and good value) houseplants readily available in garden centres and supermarkets now - how about a marvellously elegant moth orchid (Phalaenopsis)? I treated myself to a couple this summer and I know that even with my sometimes erratic care they should keep on performing for years to come! Visit Pippa’s website www. pippagreenwood.com for her ‘Winter thru’ Spring Collection’ of gorgeous UK-grown gardenready vegetable plants ready for delivery in September. You’ll also find many gardening items including growing frames, SpeedHoes, SpeedWeeders, raised bed kits, Nemaslug and other nematode controls, copper tape, pull-out EasyTunnels, signed books and lots more besides.

Doors open at historic hospice for autumn fayre Sue Ryder Leckhampton Court Hospice is throwing open its doors for its annual autumn celebration on Saturday 9th September between 11.00am and 4.00pm. The event promises a fun, traditional Cotswolds day out for all the family whilst raising funds for the hospice which cares for people aged 18 and over living with conditions like cancer, heart failure, lung disease and neurological conditions from right across Gloucestershire. With entry at just £2.50 per adult and children under 12s free, the day offers something for everyone within the stunning grounds of the historic grade II listed building. The perfect setting for a quintessential family day out in the Cotswolds, the young – and the young at heart – can enjoy children’s entertainment, games, face painting, Cheltenham Town FC Hot Shot, and a bouncy castle as well as live music and dance displays from

special guests. For the shoppers, there will be an abundance of gifts and treats on offer at the craft, fashion and food stalls – from homemade cakes and preserves to children’s toys and retro fashion. Those looking for more traditional fayre can take part in the bottle tombola, peruse the second-hand book stall and enter the charity raffle or enjoy a Cotswolds afternoon tea or BBQ served in the hospice’s beautiful historic surroundings, with refreshments supplied by long term supporters of the hospice, Creed Food Service. Elise Hoadley, Hospice Director at Sue Ryder Leckhampton Court Hospice said, “Our traditional autumn fayre is an exclusive opportunity to enjoy our beautiful grounds and buildings nestled in the foothills of the Cotswolds whilst having a great day out with family and friends raising much-needed funds for our hospice.”

“We are home to the only inpatient unit giving around the clock hospice care in the whole of the county in addition to our day and hospice at home services. As a charity, all our services are given free of charge, but we rely on fundraising for the majority of our income. Our Autumn Fayre is an important day in our fundraising calendar, and over the past five years it’s taken place we have raised over £26,000, which could pay for a staggering 1,600 hours of hospice care here.” “We’re really looking forward to welcoming lots of people through our doors for what promises to be a fun filled family day out.” For more information on the Leckhampton Court Autumn Fayre visit www.sueryder.org/ leckhamptonautumnfayre, call 01242 246285 or email leckhampton. fundraising@sueryder.org

Finance

By Ann Haldon

How to Build Up Your Credit Rating at University stage?

Being able to borrow money when you need it is a crucial part of everyday life for most people. It enables you to enter the property market when the time comes, helps you buy your first car, and provides the means to deal with emergencies when they happen. Many undergraduate bank accounts offer a credit card and arranged overdraft facility when you start university, with the overdraft facility often being increased over the following years depending on the risk involved to the lender. Do lenDers think you will Default? This is partly how lenders decide whether or not to accept an application for borrowing – it’s based largely on the risk of default that you present to them. This risk is assessed using your credit file, which contains a credit rating and other information. Building a good credit rating certainly takes time, but when your degree course is finished and you start work, you’ll be thankful for the steps you’ve already taken. So what can you do to help yourself at this Page 18

• apply for a credit-builder credit card These credit cards are for people with no credit history, or a poor credit rating that needs to be rebuilt. In your case, a card such as this will allow you to build up a good credit history, as long as you are sensible and use it in the right way. You should use it each month to pay for regular but relatively low outgoings - your food shopping, for example, or rail tickets. The crucial part is to pay off the balance in full, and without fail, every month. Missing a single payment will instantly damage your credit rating. You will also be charged a high interest rate on the outstanding balance, and late payment fees. Using a credit-builder credit card is one of the most effective ways to build a good credit history if it’s used properly. • Make sure you’re on the electoral register Any lender will want to see that you have a fixed address, and be able to confirm your identity. This increases confidence that you’re trustworthy, but as a student living in halls the best option is to use your home address. You can apply to be included on the register by contacting your local council or using the gov.uk website.

• Don’t exceed your overdraft limit without authorisation Going over your arranged overdraft limit, even for a day, will trigger high interest charges and other fees, but crucially it will also damage your credit score. If you know that you’re going to need extra money for a limited time, talk to your bank and see if they’ll agree to increase your limit, even if it’s only on a temporary basis. • avoid multiple applications for credit If you’re refused credit by one or more lenders it will adversely affect your credit rating, so it’s a good idea to avoid making multiple applications at the same time. • include rent payments in your credit file The Rental Scheme was first introduced in 2016. It involves paying your rent to the landlord through an intermediary, who informs the credit reference agencies that you’ve paid on time. The three main credit reference agencies in the UK – Experian, Equifax, and Callcredit – each hold their own information about your credit history. At some point whilst you’re at university, it would be worthwhile checking with each agency to ensure the information they hold is correct. http://www.savethestudent. org/money/student-banking/ student-credit-rating.html

COUNCILLORS CORNER Pavement improvements I have secured improvements to pavements in Naunton Park Road and Asquith Road which should be completed within this financial year. The pathway between Fairfield Parade and Naunton Way is also to be improved. I have a fairly long list of pavements and roads that need urgent attention. I am pleased that this year I have secured these improvements but will obviously continue to press for more investment in our area. Paving of Cheltenham High Street and Cambray Place are particularly dreadful. I have reported them to highways who say they have been safety inspected. Also, I have asked questions at the Borough Council too, in the hope that CBC leadership can put pressure on the County Council to make the investment that is desperately needed to improve these key areas of our town. Parking Like pavement repairs and road

resurfacing, parking is the responsibility of the County Council. Parking problems continue in St Luke’s and other areas because of the large number of business permits issued. Elsewhere in Cheltenham, new parking schemes around Lansdown are causing problems for rail commuters because of the limited amount of parking near the train station. These issues are not going to be easy to solve as they are rooted in the County Council’s Permit Policy. I am arranging to speak to the councillor at Shire Hall responsible for parking about these issues and possible measure to improve the permit scheme. Eddie the Eagle charity film night at The Playhouse Cheltenham, Friday 29th September @ 7.00pm You are invited to join me for a special charity screening of the Eddie the Eagle movie this September. This is a special fundraising evening in aid of the Mayor of Cheltenham Charity Appeal (reg. charity 1118165). Tickets are £10, with proceeds

divided equally (at the end of my mayoral year) to the Hollie Gazzard Trust and the Cheltenham and Gloucester Hospitals Charity's Focus Fund. Funds raised during my mayoral year will help tackle domestic abuse as well as support cancer patients being treated at the oncology centre at Cheltenham General Hospital. The bar will be open from 7.00pm. Tickets can be purchased directly from The Playhouse Theatre via their online box office www.cheltplayhouse.org. uk/whats-on/autumn-2017/eddiethe-eagle-pg/ - Cllr Klara Sudbury, Mayor of Cheltenham

Cheltenham Calendar Alas, Summer is over. Whatever sun we have had, it has begun to disappear. It's time to unpack the suitcase and bring back the briefcases and school bags. But it’s not all doom and gloom, there is plenty to see and do this month that keeps the back to work and school blues away. Hopefully, the weather remains sunny for the coming months as we seem to reach the climax of the open air cinema season, kicking off at Cowley Manor on the 6th with an outdoor screening of 'Pretty Woman', followed by 'Moulin Rouge' on the 9th. Sandford Parks Lido is also taking part and will be showing classics such as 'Fight Club', 'Back to the Future' and 'Grease' on the 20th, 21st and 22nd of September. The Hobgoblin Comedy Festival is coming to Cheltenham for its seventh successive year this autumn. Ed Byrne, Lee Nelson and Sarah Millican will be gracing the Cotswolds with their presence and will make us chuckle from the 18th to the 23rd. Keep your eyes peeled for lots of smaller gigs popping up around the

centre of Cheltenham; these are always great fun and make for a fantastic budget-friendly evening out. If cycling is your thing, then listen up. The 9th and 10th of September brings the Cheltenham Festival of Cycling which this year features the OVO Energy Tour of Britain (stage seven). With a street fair and a Kids Zone, there is something for everyone, even if you aren’t as keen on bicycles. On Saturday, 120 elite cyclists will be whizzing through Cheltenham in an attempt to finish first in the penultimate stage of the Tour of Britain. If you are feeling really active and particularly inspired by this exhibition of strength and fitness, then get involved with the Cheltenham Triathlon on Sunday the 10th. It will kick off at the local Lido with a 500m swim, followed by a 15km cycle and a 2.7km run around the gorgeous Cotswolds.

by Olivia Scull As it so happens the same weekend also brings us the Cheltenham Paint Festival. On the 9th and 10th around 70 top artists will be coming from all corners of the country to display their art. These artists will include My Dog Sighs, who has a huge international following, P0g0 and Lemak who have both been finalists in the 'World Stencil Artist of the Year' competition. Free events, exhibitions and graffiti workshops will be taking place throughout the weekend. Not only is the Cheltenham Everyman Theatre hosting some of the highprofile comedy shows this month, it is also showing the classic thriller 'Wait Until Dark' from the 12th and the iconic opera Madam Butterfly from the 23rd. That should be enough to keep you going for the next 30 days. See you all next month!

You can find more of my work and reviews of shows, plays, etc. I’ve seen on my blog www.watchingfromthecheapseats.wordpress.com

dyes could be extracted from other sources, such as ultramarine blue from ground lapis lazuli gemstones or Tyrian purple, where 10,000 boiled snails produced just one gram of dye. the story of colour is the story of society, of fashion, of the way we live, of science, of art – in fact, of mankind itself. We look at all aspects of colour, from its history to this year’s most fashionable shades. Did you know there was a time when green wallpaper could kill? Or that a very expensive dye was made from boiled snails? In the Palaeolithic era about 35,000 years ago - Stone Age man began to create cave paintings using earth pigments mixed with resin, water or glue made from animal bones and hides. For centuries the most widely used natural pigments were extracted from soil and rocks, plants, insects and animals. Ash and chalk were also basics; at a price, however, strong, bright pigments or

Historically, the use of colour was governed by ease of availability and thus cost. The richest colours were always reserved for the most important parts of religious and royal interiors. In the Georgian period, the affordable ‘common’ colours included stone and timber colours, greys and whites – in the form of distemper and white lead. Middle class households would often use the slightly more expensive oil colours such as ‘drab’ (dull brownish grey), olive, pea green and sky blue. More expensive paints included pink, lemon, orange and straw colour, while the most costly were verdigris, ultramarine and smalt, a glittering blue. Everything changed from the early 19th century, when chemists began to develop synthetic colours at lower

cost. Many new colours were developed and old ones were improved - though an exception was Emerald Green, commercially available from 1814 to the early 1900s, as fumes from wallpaper printed with the arsenic-based ink could be deadly. The new Victorian palette included bottle greens, gold, burgundy, crimson, rose, violet and mahogany, as well as intense chemical yellows, blues and greens. Edwardian hues became softer and paler and, ever since, colour has followed the rollercoaster of fashion and scientific advances: from the ‘greeneryyallery’ of the Aesthetic movement to the brilliant white produced by the introduction of titanium dioxide in 1916 and from the sorbet colours of the Fifties right through to the pinks, blues and greens of 2017. It’s fair to say that the modern world of colour has no limits.

What are this year’s most fashionable colours? greenery: Colour authority Pantone’s colour of 2017, Greenery is described as ‘a fresh and zesty yellow-green shade that evokes the first days of spring when nature’s greens revive, restore and renew’. Greenery is ideal for adding pops of colour in the form of cushions, cupboard fronts or vases. It also lends itself

beautifully to the botanicals trend that’s so hot right now.

and post-pretty, and it’s literally everywhere.

millennial PinK: Also known as Tumblr Pink and Scandi Pink, Millennial Pink is a soft, dusky pink that was inspired by Wes Anderson’s film The Grand Budapest Hotel and the rose gold iPhone. It’s been called gender-neutral

Denim Drift: Dulux’s colour of the year for 2017, Denim Drift is versatile and easy to use in every room of the house, from kitchen cupboards and soft furnishings to floor coverings and entire walls. It’s easy to coordinate with, too.

Chalk Talk The holidays are officially over, parents are wondering just where the summer went and school uniforms have been lengthened or replaced. As the new school term starts, I want to congratulate all those Cheltenham teachers, parents and governors whose relentless campaigning for a fair funding deal for Cheltenham schools received a major boost recently. What’s the background? For more than 20 years Gloucestershire pupils have received less national funding than pupils in other parts of the country. The old Labour formula has seen children in London’s Tower Hamlets receive nearly double the sum allocated to Cheltenham’s pupils. I’ve been fighting to get our poorly funded schools a fair deal ever since I was first elected. As I stated in Parliament, it became frankly ridiculous to hear London MPs moaning that their funding settlement was due to rise from £5,300 per pupil to ‘just’ £5,400 by 2020. Cheltenham secondary schools receive around £4,200. It’s simply not right that our children, in

similar circumstances, lose out in comparison to pupils in other parts of the country. Equally, it says a great deal about the calibre and dedication of our heads, teachers and governors who have churned out good results, year after year, in spite of such a raw deal. Just before Christmas, the Department for Education civil servants came up with a set of new funding proposals. I welcomed the fact that the funding nettle was finally being grasped but the proposals needed serious surgery. They didn’t help local schools enough in my view. Since then I’ve been lobbying education chiefs to make changes and recognise the pressures that our schools face, and in Parliament, I used the Queen’s Speech debate to highlight Cheltenham’s specific situation. At the start of the summer, the Education Secretary reported back. It was good news for Cheltenham and Gloucestershire. I’m delighted that every secondary school in Cheltenham will now receive at

least £4,800 per pupil – a major increase. Many will receive thousands more in additional needs funding. This is a significant step forward. Of course, there’s much more to do. I’m Vice-Chair of the national f40 campaign group. We represent the 40 worst funded local authority areas in the country. Our next mission is to sort out a fair funding formula for our primary, early years and special schools too. But after so many years of being at the back of the funding queue, this really is a positive move for education in Cheltenham. Thank you, and congratulations, to all those who supported this campaign for Cheltenham’s schools. - by Alex Chalk

Wireless Black Spots Wireless networks do have coverage ‘black spots’ in the home. Some bits of your house get a great signal, while others don’t. The culprit is often metal - radiators, filing cabinets, cookers and other big metal things can block Wi-Fi’s radio waves - and there are all kinds of obstacles between your router and your devices. But before you consider buying a gadget such as a Wi-Fi extender, try moving your router: it might be in a particularly Wi-Fi unfriendly place, and just moving it a few feet up could make all the difference. If it’s an old router consider getting a newer one: the latest Wi-Fi standard, 802.11ac, is much, much faster and stronger than older standards. Does this all sound like gobbledygook and you just want the problem fixed?! Be assured it can be fixed and call an expert.

Town Centre Talking It’s Cheltenham’s new map and guide – Down to a t As a regular reader of Cheltenham Magazine, you’re no doubt used to finding your way around town and think you know about everything it has to offer. We’re hoping that the Business Improvement District’s (BID’s) new Map and Guide will help visitors get around just as easily – and encourage them to spend longer here than they were intending to. When the BID was being set up, one of the first things the town’s businesses told us was that they felt that Cheltenham needed to be better at marketing and promoting itself. We listened and decided, when we looked at the information on offer, that the town was crying out for a modern publication that would both help and inform visitors. We’re delighted with our fold-out guide, which is also available to download at the recently updated Visit Cheltenham website. As well as detailed full-colour maps of the town centre, the guide also focuses on the areas that make Cheltenham special, the major events taking place in coming months and advice on the best ways to get to and around the town. Some 148,000 copies of the guide have been printed and it will be distributed across the Cotswolds and beyond. There is evidence that while many

national and international visitors know what the Cotswolds has to offer, they have not heard of Cheltenham and certainly don’t know what an amazing place it is with regard to its history, for shopping and for a great night out. One important part of our marketing plan is that the guide is being circulated to hotels and B & Bs across the Cotswolds and beyond. In the past, tourists could be within an hour’s drive of Cheltenham and the town would not be on their radar. Now, they won’t be able to miss us – and after the first visit, there is every chance they will come back. We’re promoting the guide as ‘Cheltenham… down to a t’ as our key areas sit on a t, with the Racecourse at the top, the independent shopping areas at the bottom and the High Street running across the middle. The map and guide had an original print run of 45,000, but it so impressed the Jockey Club, which owns Cheltenham Racecourse, that they asked us to add 100,000 to the print run. It will now be circulated to their international database along with their annual magazine “Kalendar” in September. The University of Gloucestershire also sees the guide as a great way to promote itself and the town to potential students and has taken an extra 3,000 copies. Going back to you regular Cheltenham Magazine readers, there may even be

some new information in there for you. Ever wondered why the Suffolks is called the Suffolks when it’s nowhere near East Anglia? Or why the 1820s “new town” of Pittville is so called? The best way to find out is to pick up one of the guides from the Tourist Information Centre at The Wilson.

- by Kevan Blackadder, Cheltenham BID Director

Is technology going to replace your job? The world is changing for individuals and businesses. Technology has been fantastic for us on many fronts, such as email (apart from the spam), online banking and shopping to name but a few. When I speak to clients I speak to them as an accountant but also as a business owner. That makes me well placed to share the same fears on how technology is going to impact us in the future. Can smart machines really take away our jobs? The answer is yes, they can take away some of our jobs such as the manual, more repetitive ones (take Amazon’s warehouse system for example). For most service-based workers who previously felt untouchable from this threat, it WILL take away PART of their roles.

This should actually make our working lives more enjoyable as we can work on more interesting tasks. The key is to focus on the HUMAN aspects of our work. The forward thinking businesses are already doing this, even though it is going totally against the direction the world has been moving in in terms of emails, banking, insurance and even accountancy. However, there are already examples that buck the trend in other industries. Who thought, for example, vinyl would make a comeback, competing against the mighty streaming giants available on our phones. Perhaps there is life left in the local High Street after all… Stephen Edwards Cheltenham Tax Accountants Accountants for small businesses, freelancers, contractors and individuals Tel. 01252 528412 Email: stephen@cheltenhamtaxaccountants.co.uk

I have been reading a brilliant book called ‘Only Humans Need Apply: Winners and Losers in the Age of Smart Machines’ and it has taught me to EMBRACE these changes. There are parts of our jobs already augmented by technology and this is only going to increase. Even doctors are seeing their roles change as there are extremely sophisticated machines available now that can analyse cancerous patterns far more efficiently and accurately than the very best doctors. The book recalls an infamous story about John Henry who once beat a powerful new drill that threatened his job, only to die shortly after. The result of this latest revolution will mean that we cannot compete with smart machines so need to use them to improve our jobs to offer more value to our clients and customers instead.

Homeopathy for Mental Health Homeopathy is a system of alternative medicine that uses homeopathic “remedies” to help a wide range of health problems. There are many remedies available, and the task of the homeopath is to find one that best suits an individual’s difficulties in their entirety. My name is Andy Brachi, and I am writing to let readers of the Cheltenham Magazine know about a new donations-based service I am offering that uses homeopathy to support people experiencing mental health difficulties. The service is based in central Stroud, and involves attending up to five sessions spread over some 5 or 6 months. During the early sessions especially, a person will be invited to talk about themselves Page 32

and their particular difficulties in some depth. While there is a focus on mental health, any physical problems will also be asked about, and all of this information will be combined in order to select a remedy. An improvement in both emotional and physical symptoms would be seen as a good indication of successful treatment. The remedies themselves come in the form of small sugar pills which are usually given as a one-off dose. Several different remedies may be tried over time, depending on whether an individual’s health improves. When a remedy is found to be helpful, it is generally not changed although it may be repeated. In principle the service is open to all although exceptions

do apply. People interested in finding out more are encouraged to visit the website www.fivevalleyshomeopathy. co.uk or to ring me directly on 077796 36 380. I qualified as a homeopath in 1996, and have practiced and studied homeopathy on a part-time basis since then. Up until June of this year, I worked for nine years as a (mental health) Nurse Therapist for the Children and Young People Service (CYPS aka CAMHS). It had long been my hope to integrate my knowledge of homeopathy into this nursing role but for various reasons it was not possible. It is hoped that the clinic will make homeopathy more accessible to those who lack the opportunity, or who might not consider trying, this type of therapy.

and India. Last year, UK Lions sent over 300,000 pairs to Medico France, this was over 50% of the total they handled. So far this year, Cheltenham have sent over 3,000, with the target being 5,000. The club would like to thank the opticians Chapmans in the Regent Arcade and Guildford and Carter in Bishop's Cleeve which have both installed collecting boxes on the club's behalf. Should any other optician wish to have a box, then please contact the club.

As mentioned earlier, members are currently preparing for a busy autumn. On Saturday 9th September club members will be at Centre Cross Drive collecting money during the Tour of Britain Cycle Race. Live entertainment will be provided by a ukulele band, dancers and singers. Between the 18th and 23rd of September, you will be able to pick up some second-hand books at the club's Book Sale in the Regent Arcade. Anyone with good quality novels or children’s books to clear please ring Ron White on 01242 675286 or David Green on 01242 862225, members will gladly collect within the Cheltenham area. Advance notice for gardeners: A Plant Sale will be held at the Exmouth Arms on Saturday 6th October from 9.00am until early afternoon with good quality plants from a local nursery. Members recently enjoyed a Sunday afternoon trip on the 'Conway Castle' sailing from Upton-upon-Severn with a good lunch and live music.
