Local Magazines Published by Glos Directories - connecting local businesses with local people
Dear Reader, Christmas and January sales have come and gone and the mild start to January was lovely, albeit a little wet at times. As we head into February, we have Valentine's Day to look forward to. Many see Valentine's Day as a commercial gimmick and the first stumbling block for anyone who had a diet-related New Year’s resolution! Whether you celebrate this day or not, I think it is a great way to remind ourselves to spread a bit of love to those around you. Also the 14th falls within half term so it provides parents or grandparents with a great theme for doing some arts and crafts or baking with the children! At the start of the year, committees and fete organisers get together to put dates in the diary for future events. Please remember to let us know what you are planning and we might be able to publish your event in the magazine and share it on our social media pages for you. Happy Valentine’s Day to all our readers and thank you for supporting the local businesses within our magazines! Best wishes, Vicky Muller

Plan ahead during Winter Not much is going on in our gardens at this time of year. The weather is miserable and February can be quite a dull month. A bit of horticulture and vigorous gardening will restore your garden to an oasis of joy but for now just sit back in your chair with a cup of tea and reflect on the past gardening year. It is very easy to get caught up in the week-to-week bustle of the garden during the summer and you can easily miss out on enjoying it, so use the winter slowdown to take note of your achievements. Your garden should bring you joy and be a shelter from the stresses of the outside world and the busy lives we lead. As the days get longer and first signs of spring start to show with the snowdrops emerging, take time to reflect on the beauty of your garden and begin to make plans. You can, for example, play around with different shapes of borders and focal points, especially if you are thinking of making adjustments or wish to try out something new. Do you have any photographs of gardens that you could use for inspiration? Try to choose a few fun projects that will transform your outdoor space. How about growing something new, like fruit for example? Apples, pears, currants and raspberries are all fairly easy to grow. Or how about taking on a big project like a new shed, overhauling the border or a new patio?

Get planning and start now! Order your seeds for spring and choose your vegetable crop varieties and flower seeds to ensure that you get hold of the seeds you want; gardening magazines and online shops will provide you with a great choice. Velvet Underground by Pippa Greenwood
They may be known as ‘velvet coated gentlemen’, but if you have a problem with moles in your garden, it is highly unlikely you will call them anything so polite! So what can you do if your lawn becomes decorated with mounds of finely turned soil, or if plants start to disappear beneath soil level as subsidence occurs within the flowerbed, or an entire row of vegetables is excavated from below? Moles can do a lot of damage to a lawn, largely because that fine soil acts as an excellent seedbed for weeds and can make the lawn surface slippery. Mole runs beneath your lawn, flowerbeds or vegetable plots can occasionally cause the plants to suffer from drought, as the soil is no longer in contact with the roots. Often, when the tunnels collapse subsidence occurs, and plants can literally fall over. Moles can sometimes be deterred by high-pitched sounds or vibrations. Try inserting children’s windmills over the mole infested areas, as the vibration that passes down these into the soil is said to send moles scampering away. Similarly, you can plunge glass bottles into the soil with the neck protruding. The noise Page 8
and vibrations created as the wind whistles over the mouth of the bottles may also discourage moles. Very smelly substances, such as mole smokes, can work against moles. These are like fireworks and, inserted into the run, produce unpleasant smoke. However, with these and other smelly deterrents, once the smell has subsided the mole may return. Traps are available from some garden centres or online stores. They must be correctly set and you must wear gloves as the moles will avoid the trap if they detect human scent. It is much more effective to employ a specialist mole catcher who is adept at trapping them and, since they often charge only on the basis of moles caught, it need not be too expensive a process either. Moles do eventually decide to go elsewhere, and although this does not imply that your garden will then remain free of moles, if the problem has been very bad one year it may not be quite so severe the next. Some say that the plant caper spurge (Euphorbia lathyrus) will deter moles and as it does seem to work for some gardeners and the plants are
fairly attractive it is worth giving it a try! Some gardeners report success with ultrasonic devices that can be inserted into the ground. Once again, I am afraid that it seems the majority of you find these ineffective and indeed I will never forget once seeing a molehill which appeared directly around the base of one of these gadgets in a friend’s garden - so they are not a method I recommend. If all else fails, and attempting to look at this problem in a positive light, bear in mind that incredibly finely turned soil can be useful and many gardeners I know, including the wonderful ‘grandfather of gardening’ Geoffrey Smith, used the soil as a medium in which to grow an excellent crop of seedlings! Visit Pippa’s website www.pippagreenwood. com to buy gorgeous UK grown vegetable plants accompanied by weekly advice emails from Pippa, or to peruse the really useful selection of Pippa’s favourite gardening items including pop-up crop covers, SpeedHoes, SpeedWeeders, raised bed kits, fleece jackets for plants, pull-out EasyTunnels, signed books and lots more besides.

Shopping with a smile on the outskirts of Ross on Wye
Santa's visit a great success! Santa Clause really did come to town in style in December and children of all ages flocked to visit him in his grotto at Labels Shopping on the outskirts of Ross-on-Wye. “I really enjoyed my few days at Labels and it was lovely to meet you all.” said Santa. “I’m sorry that I couldn’t stay for longer but it’s a very busy time of year for me and I had a lot of presents to deliver… I do hope that you received what you asked me for.” Santa was ably assisted by several elves from the Ross-onWye Rotary Club and various Pantomime characters and Festive Friends from the Ross-based young theatre group ‘X-entricity’.
Members of the Ross-on-Wye Rotary Club dropped in to collect their cheque from Chrissie Ellis who designed and built Santa’s Grotto at Labels.
The grotto itself was designed and built by Chrissie Ellis, a Labels colleague. Over £500 were raised and the proceeds are going to local charities supported by the Ross
Rotary Club who worked on the project in conjunction with the store. Labels Shopping is located just off junction 4 of the M50 near Ross-on-Wye. It's open 7 days a week with lots of free parking.

Auction Anecdote As we head into the early part of the new year I can now update you on my December sale which at the last time of writing had not yet taken place. Further to my excited predictions regarding a letter by Horatio Nelson we were delighted when it sold to a commission buyer for £1,100, whilst a fine silver plated miniature mantel clock made £1000 and a charming collection of Staffordshire fox head form stirrup cups made a total of £880. In the pre-sale Christmas hunt for gifts, private buyers were out in force and when onegentleman lost out on a beautiful diamond marquise cut ring for £1,350 he settled for a stunning oval diamond set pendant for £2000 instead. One of my favourite items in the sale was a large English delft plate naively painted with scrolling flowers and foliage surrounding a very strange animal in the centre which, we 18th century Bristol delft charger decorated squirrel decided after some debate, must be a squirrel. English delft ware was produced from the 16th to late 18th century and copied the slightly more sophisticated Dutch Delft (spelt with a capital D) which in turn was a crude attempt to copy the fine blue and white porcelain which was being imported from China. The white colour of delft was achieved by using a thick white tin glaze disguising a brown pottery body. Consequently, production of these wares ceased almost instantly in England the day Josiah Wedgwood invented white earthenware towards the end of the 18th century. This new material was much more suited to mass production techniques and even more importantly could be decorated by transfer printing rather than the traditional hand painting which was very labour intensive. The new all white bodied ware was also much stronger than the tin glazed pottery which had always been very prone to chips and breakages. Interestingly tin glazed earthenware is one of the few types of china in which damage is acceptable to buyers, since perfect examples are almost unknown. Luckily the plate in our sale was in relatively good condition with just a few rim chips, and together with its unusual and quirky squirrel decoration it attracted a small range of specialist buyers and sold for a pleasing £660 against a £400/£600 estimate. Home & Interiors Invaluable Decorating Tips By Katherine Sorrell
Planning changes to your home? Interiors expert Katherine Sorrell has some handy hints… Living rooms • Use a scale plan of your room with cut out mini furniture items, and move these around until you find the right positions. • The alcoves either side of a chimney breast are perfect for creating extra storage. • For maximum light, fit a pole or track that overhangs far enough each on side of the window to allow the curtains to be drawn right back. • Avoid using a central hanging pendant as the only light source, but add in table lamps, floor lamps and wall lamps for a more flexible and flattering ambience. • Consider ways to disguise the TV when not in use – can you adapt a piece of furniture, such as an armoire, so that it sits behind closed doors when necessary? Page 14
Kitchens • Have tall cupboards at one end of your cupboard run, with the hob nearby and plenty of worktop space between the hob and the sink. Add the dishwasher on the other side of the sink. • If possible, make worktops 700mm deep instead of 600mm, to give more working space and to better accommodate a large sink. • In an open-plan kitchen, choose quiet appliances, and design so the washing up is hidden from the view of the dining table. • Paint the inside of a wall cabinet door with blackboard paint to give somewhere to write a shopping list. • Base cabinets on legs, or recessed plinths, make the room seem larger.
so keep the walls, floors and major items of furniture relatively neutral and just change accessories, such as rugs, cushion covers and lamp shades, as necessary. • Cover boring walls with blackboard paint, magnetic wallpaper, peg board, maps or wall stickers. • A high-level bed provides space beneath for study, play or storage. • Fit a dimmer switch so you can adjust the light from bright for playing or reading to soft and calm at bedtime. • Storage is all-important. Felt tips and paint brushes can be kept in tins, though beware of sharp edges. For storing tiny Lego sets and the like, ice cream tubs or shoe boxes are ideal.
Bedrooms • Plan storage with precision, and divide the interior of your wardrobe into hanging space plus shelves, drawers and shoe racks. Consider storage gadgets such as belt racks and pull-out trays. • Maximise space by building fitted wardrobes right up to the ceiling. • Add a blackout lining to your curtains, or choose wooden shutters for additional sound and draught-proofing, and security. • Swing-arm lights on either side of the bed free up space on bedside tables. • A blanket box at the end of the bed is ideal for storing bedding and doubles as a seat.
• If you’re on a budget, invest more in taps, shower doors and bath screens and save on a plain white suite, adding decorative appeal with tiles and attractive accessories. • Wall-hung WCs and washbasins create the illusion of extra space. • Hide pipework under floorboards or behind false walls and punch shallow shelves into the studwork to create useful storage niches. • Lights on both sides of your washbasin mirror dispel unflattering shadows. • Chosen a cast iron bath? Check it will fit up the stairs…

now, he's locked in the price for a year. So, the sooner you act, the more you're likely to save. 3. Check multi-car policies if you've more than one car in the home. A few insurers offer special discounts if you have more than one car in the home – but comparison sites can’t include these deals, so do it manually. www.Admiral.com Multicar gives discounts of up to 25%, depending on how many cars you insure. You can also get discounts by linking the household standalone policies with Churchill, Direct Line and Privilege. The savings here could be huge. Equally, they can be a rip off; it’s about trial and error. 4. Comprehensive cover may be cheaper than third party. Bizarrely, merely selecting comprehensive means some insurers see you as a lower risk, and it lowers the price, so always check comprehensive too if you want the cheapest. 5. Adding an extra driver could cost less. Again, counter-intuitively adding another person to the policy can bring down your premium, as the average risk is reduced. It’s especially strong if you're a young driver adding a responsible older driver, but can work for others too as Bouncybubbles told me: "Quoted £900 from £500 previous year. By comparing
then adding my husband I got it down to £298."
or late at night, it can work well too.
6. Legitimately tweak your job title. You can't claim to be the Chancellor if you're a pole dancer (or viceversa), but many people have wide ranging roles. So by tweaking your job description you might find your quote is lower. Like @RPJ_Webster93 who tweeted: "@martinslewis Thanks to your 'reword job title' tip my car insurance quote reduced by £500." He legitimately changed his job title from 'council worker' to 'civil servant - cleric'.
9. Got special circumstances and struggling? Speak to a broker. If your circumstances aren’t normal, getting insurance can be tough. Often getting an insurance broker to find a bespoke policy for you can beat comparison sites. See www.biba.org.uk/findinsurance/ 10. Can you get cashback. Once you’ve found your cheapest policy check cashback websites like Quidco.com and TopCashback.co.uk to see if you can get any money back on the policy you’ve chosen if you buy it via them - this can be over £50, so is often worth it. Yet don’t let the cashback tail wag the dog. Choose the right policy first, then see cashback as an added extra (as it isn’t 100% guaranteed). Martin Lewis is the Founder & Editor in Chief of Money Saving Expert. To join the 10 million people who get his Martin’s Money Tips weekly email, go to www. moneysavingexpert.com/ latesttip
7. Don’t ‘pay monthly’ – it doesn't exist. Insurers may call it paying monthly, but actually they loan you the year's cost and while a few are interest free, most charge often hideous interest. The worst offender I’ve seen charges up-to-93% APR interest. So, check and if it’s costly, pay upfront if you can. If not, try to get one of the many year-long-plus 0% credit cards. Just ensure you pay it off over the year, then there's no cost. 8. Consider installing a 'black box'. This device is the tech (officially called 'telematics') insurers put inside your car to monitor how you drive and when. It's especially useful for younger drivers facing hefty costs via other means, though if your mileage is limited and you don't drive at peak times

Does Your Pet Have Joint Problems? Joint pain can cause severe mobility problems that take away your pet’s joy for life, but it’s not just older animals that suffer in this way. Genetic issues such as hip or elbow dysplasia in dogs, or an old injury, increase the risk of them suffering from arthritis. What to look out for It’s fairly easy to spot the signs of arthritis in dogs, simply because they are in your company more than a rabbit or a cat, for example. These are some of the indicators to watch out for: • Stiffness when your dog gets up, or after a walk. • They walk with a limp, even if only for a few minutes. • Your cat’s reluctance to jump
PETS on your knee. • Your rabbit being less inclined to run around its cage. It can be particularly difficult to notice the signs of arthritis in a rabbit, as one of the ways they survive in the wild is to move less when they’re injured, so as not to appear vulnerable. Is there anything you can do to prevent joint problems in your pet? As far as puppies are concerned, it’s important not to over-exercise them while their bodies are still developing. Being overweight will also have a huge impact on your pet’s joints, so watching food intake is a key factor. The vet may prescribe an anti-inflammatory if your pet has severe joint pain, or glucosamine and chondroitin, as these are supplements known to help with mobility. By Ann Haldon

Cake and Bake Raspberry & Vanilla Panna Cotta These delightful creamy desserts make the perfect Valentine treat!
Ingredients:
1.
To make the raspberry jelly hearts, line a small 6cm square dish with cling film. Soak the gelatine in a shallow dish of cold water for 2-3 minutes. Heat the raspberry puree in a small pan with 1 tbsp water. Remove the gelatine leaf from the water and stir into the hot puree until dissolved. Pour into the lined dish and leave to cool, then chill in the fridge until set.
2.
When the jelly is set, use a small heart-shaped cookie cutter to stamp out 4 heart shapes and place each one in the base of a small heart shaped ramekin dish (each about 150ml capacity).
3.
To make the panna cotta, place the cream, vanilla extract, lemon rind and caster sugar in a pan and bring slowly to the boil. Remove from the heat.
4.
Meanwhile, soak the gelatine leaves as in step 1. Remove from the water and stir into the hot cream until completely dissolved. Leave to cool for 30 minutes. Remove the strips of lemon rind and divide the mixture between two bowls. Stir a few drops of pink food colouring into one bowl. Spoon the two mixtures into the ramekins, to give two with colouring and two without. Chill for 6 hours or overnight until set.
5.
To serve, cut and trim the halved brownies to make four heart shapes the same size as the ramekins. Dip each ramekin into a bowl of hot water for a few seconds to release the panna cotta then turn each one out onto a heart-shaped brownie. Decorate with fresh raspberries.
• 75g fresh raspberries, pureed
• 1 sheet leaf gelatine PANNA COTTA • 600ml double cream
• 2 tsp vanilla extract • 2 pared strips lemon rind • 50g caster sugar • 2 sheets leaf gelatine • Few drops pink food colouring
TO SERVE • 2 ready-made chocolate brownies, halved horizontally
• Fresh raspberries
Serves 4 Ready in 1 hour, plus overnight chilling Page 20

Wireless networking, or Wi-Fi for short, is one of the best and worst technologies of all time. When it works, it’s brilliant; when it doesn’t, it’s infuriating. But solving Wi-Fi worries is often very simple. The most common problem is no signal or poor signal. That’s usually because you’re too far away from the router, or because there are obstacles between you and the router. Metal objects such as radiators are particularly bad, but older buildings with thick walls can be a problem too. The first step is to try moving the router somewhere else - the higher the better, because there are fewer obstacles the closer you get to the ceiling - but if that doesn’t work you could extend your network with a Wi-Fi extender. It picks up the signal from the router and re-broadcasts it, helping to reach places the router can’t.

Finance Money Saving Ideas To Get You Back On Track In 2017 By Ann Haldon owned residences around the world. It can often be cheaper than staying in ‘traditional’ hotel rooms or hostels, and offers travellers a vast choice of grades and styles to suit every budget. If you’re searching for ways to save money this year, take a look at some ideas for everyday savings and special treats that won’t break the bank. Discount websites Wowcher, Groupon and Living Social are just three websites offering great deals on everything from holidays to online courses. You simply sign up and input your chosen region to get a local or national deal with as much as 50% discount. couponing You may know couponing as cutting out discount vouchers from the local paper or supermarket magazines. But the practice has taken on a life of its own, with ‘extreme couponing’ hitting the headlines as shoppers save huge amounts on their monthly food bill. Various websites dedicated to couponing tell you where to find the best offers online, but you do need to spend time searching. The Money Saving Expert website has its own coupon page, and if you look at Supersavvyme.co.uk you’ll find a range of coupons for Procter and Gamble products. You can choose to rent an entire property, or stay in one of your host’s rooms - all you need to do is enter the date of travel and where you want to go. Some hosts prefer to find out a little more about their guests before they’ll confirm a booking; others offer an ‘Instant Book’ facility. Previous guests leave reviews on the website to give you an idea of the quality you’ll experience, and the company operates a secure online payment service. AmAzon prime Amazon Prime offers films, TV shows, music, books, and a free one-day delivery service for eligible Amazon products, all for a single annual payment of £79. You also get unlimited photo storage, and discounts on video games. If you have a Kindle, you can borrow one book per month free-of-charge from the Kindle Owners’ Lending Library, and also have access to the Kindle First scheme. This allows you to download one of six titles a month for free, or at a reduced price ahead of their official publication date. You can save further by signing up to Prime Early Access, where you’re given the opportunity to purchase ‘Lightening Deals’ 30 minutes before non-Prime members.
Low cost hoteL rooms AnD cAr hire Several websites, including Lastminute.com, Priceline and Hotwire, have a ‘Top Secret Rooms’ section where you can book a top quality hotel room at a fraction of the usual price. All you need to do is choose a location and the hotel star-rating you’re looking for, and pick a hotel from the list returned. You see a description and the hotel’s star-rating; the only drawback is you don’t know the name of the hotel until you’ve paid. You may be able to find out which hotel it is, however, by typing some of the phrases used in these descriptions into a search engine. You can then read reviews on TripAdvisor. com to check that it’s what you want, as once you’ve paid, there is no facility to get a refund. These same websites offer reduced car rental, but you may be able to save even more money using price comparison websites such as Skyscanner, Carrentals, and TravelSupermarket. http://www.wowcher.co.uk/ deals/london http://www.moneysavingexpert. com/shopping/extremecouponing https://www.airbnb.co.uk/ https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/ prime/pipeline/landing?ie=UTF8 &*Version*=1&*entries*=0 http://www.lastminute. com/hotels/top-secret. html?int_type=CMS_HOT&int_ campaign=CNT&int_detail=FB_ 3_TSH

Triangle Radio
We are a Community Radio Station, serving the Forest of Dean, fully run by volunteers who have a passion for radio and the community. As we move towards the end of winter we reflect on the hard work and fun times of last year and draw on our successes – two FM Broadcasts, several outside broadcasts and the training courses we successfully delivered to existing and new volunteers. After a relaxing January and with our batteries recharged, momentum has started to gather pace again with reports being written and with new grants in the planning. This year we have confirmation for outside broadcasts at both Coleford’s Carnival of Transport and the Coleford Music Festival, PROGRAMME Monday 08:00: Breakfast Shuffle with Daren 10:00: Daytime Shuffle with Clive 13:00: Daytime Shuffle with Ian 16:00: Daytime Shuffle with Ryan 19:00: Q-Burn with Peter Anthony 21:00: Encyclopedia of Rock with Trevor Howard (Rpt) 22:00: Americanza with Alan Roberts (Rpt) Tuesday 08:00: Breakfast Shuffle with Daren 10:00: Daytime Shuffle with Clive 13:00: Daytime Shuffle with Ian 16:00: Daytime Shuffle with Ryan 18:00: Daytime Shuffle with Dan 19:00: Manda's C60 Mix Tape (Rpt) 20:00: Chris Arscott’s Folk Show 21:00: Forest Chat with KAT (Rpt) Wednesday 08:00: Breakfast Shuffle with Daren 10:00: Daytime Shuffle with Clive 13:00: Daytime Shuffle with Ian 16:00: Daytime Shuffle with Ryan 18:00: Soft Rock & Acoustic Sessions

Like the last couple of years, we plan to run a training course and we will cover everything from the theory of Radio right through the operations of desk, editing and interview techniques. Community radio exists for the community it serves, and we are looking to promote events across the Dean. If you have something in the planning that you would like us to promote, then please get in touch with the details.

Craig's Comment By living in a rural area many of us accept that we are not always going to be able to get the same type of services as those living in large towns and cities. However, while we accept that the amount of shops, frequency of buses, and types of roads available might not always meet the levels of those in urban areas, the response times of the emergency services when we or our family are in danger is something that many would not choose to compromise on. The staff that work for our emergency services are doing a fantastic job. While often working long, unsociable hours, their commitment to making people’s lives safer is never compromised. However, is there more that can be done to help them do their job? A recent request for information to the South Western Ambulance Service Foundation Trust led me to
find out that the time that Forest of Dean residents can expect to wait for an ambulance during a Category A emergency is much longer than for those living closer to Gloucester. In fact, the only postcode area in the Forest that regularly sees ambulance emergency response times met is Cinderford, just up the road from both the Dilke Hospital and the Ambulance Station. Up until as recently as 2006 there was another station in which local ambulances were held. However, Newent’s joint ambulance and fire station last saw ambulances there in April 2006. Newent was the only station to be closed in Gloucestershire during the 2006 reorganisation. Could Newent, located in approximately equal distance between Gloucester and Cinderford, be the answer to the Forest’s slower ambulance response times? Although the Ambulance Trust keeps vehicles located near to and in the Forest, at peak times the majority are nearer Gloucester and Cheltenham.
What is more, ambulances located near to the district are also frequently called to go back towards Gloucester on emergency calls, potentially leaving residents in the Forest again with a longer wait. I have been holding discussions with South Western Ambulance Foundation Trust representatives about their emergency response times for the area. These talks are continuing and they have reiterated to me that they have been putting new policies and actions in place since April 2016. I hope to give a further update on what is being done to help people locally when there is an emergency, and I will once again be asking the Ambulance Trust – could the return of Newent Ambulance Station be the answer? Craig is the District Councillor for Oxenhall and Newent North East. If Craig is your councillor you can contact him on craig.lawton@ fdean.gov.uk. To find out who your District Councillor is you can contact Forest of Dean District Council on 01594 810000.
The Rotary Club's “Purple4Polio” Campaign In November 2016 Newent Rotary Club planted 2,500 bulbs around Newent Lake. The planting of these bulbs was a collaboration between the Newent Rotary Club and the Aston Project and was facilitated by Newent in Bloom. The plants placed around the Lake were mostly crocuses with some wild Newent Daffodils in between. They were planted along the front of the Jubilee Wild Border which will provide a stunning ribbon of purple all along the border come spring. The planting was initiated by the Newent Rotary Club and was part of the Rotary International's 30 year "Purple4Polio" campaign which aims to provide communities with ideas and opportunities to get involved with ridding the world of polio. The Aston Project is a police-run project for young people (aged 9-17) who enjoy carrying out projects and helping the community. Taking part in activities Page 32

Eating Disorders Awareness Week - 27th February to 5th March
Eating disorders affect over 725,000 people in the UK and one in five of those most seriously affected die prematurely through suicide or physical consequences. That’s why it’s essential we’re all aware of the dangers of eating disorders and our susceptibility to them. Forget the stereotypical teenage girl starving herself. There are several different eating disorders that can affect people of any age, gender or ethnicity. WhaT Causes eaTing DisorDers? Often, it’s a combination of genetic, psychological, environmental, social and biological factors. Risk factors are: • Bereavement or abuse. • Being criticised about weight, body shape or eating habits. • Intense stress. • Family history of addiction, depression or eating disorders. • Pressure to be slim from themselves, society or a career/hobby, e.g. dancing, sports. • Underlying issues such as anxiety, low self-esteem, perfectionism or obsessive personality. • Relationship issues. Types oF eaTing DisorDer anorexia nervosa Around 1 in 250 women and 1
Page 36
in 2,000 men will experience anorexia, becoming preoccupied with weighing as little as possible via excessive exercise and/or starving themselves. It usually develops at age 16 or 17 but sometimes, as young as 7. Bulimia Bulimia sufferers alternate between binge eating and purging by inducing vomiting or using laxatives, and 90% are female. It’s more common than anorexia and usually develops at around 18 or 19. Binge eating disorder (BeD) BED affects around 5% of adults, compelling them to eat large amounts of food very rapidly. It affects both sexes equally, usually developing between 30 and 40 years old. eating Disorder not otherwise Specified (EDNOS) Some people may have some but not all of the symptoms of a specific eating disorder, so they receive an EDNOS diagnosis. Diagnosis anD TreaTmenT Doctors and healthcare professionals use internationally agreed criteria to diagnose eating disorders, normally using the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) or International Classification of Diseases (ICD). They ask patients about their weight, self-image and relationship with food. But how do you know someone needs to be referred for diagnosis? Often, people with eating disorders will be in denial or try to hide symptoms, but they may: • Skip meals or claim they’ve already eaten/will eat when they’re out. • Only eat tiny/low-calorie meals. • Claim they’re fat when they’re
a healthy weight/underweight. • Repeatedly weigh themselves/ study themselves in the mirror. • Cook large family meals yet eat little themselves. • Refuse to eat in public or become stressed when they do. • Use ‘pro-anorexia’ websites. If you suspect you or someone else has an eating disorder, get professional help immediately. Rapid treatment makes full recovery more likely and minimises the impact on the patient’s body and life. However, recovery can be lengthy and, like the disorders themselves, complex. Physical health is monitored while the disorder’s underlying causes are treated. This may involve: • Self-help books. • Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), aiming to change thinking and in turn, behaviour. • Interpersonal psychotherapy: a talking therapy focusing on relationship issues. • Dietary counselling. • Psychodynamic therapy or cognitive analytic therapy (CAT), focusing on how personality and life experiences influence thoughts and behaviour. • Family therapy, considering the eating disorder’s effects on them and their family. • Medication: often SSRI antidepressants (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors). support and more information: Beat (Beat eating Disorders) www.b-eat.co.uk/ For over-18s/those concerned about a child: 0345 634 1414 help@b-eat.co.uk For under-18s: Youth Helpline 0345 634 7650 fyp@b-eat.co.uk
