KEEPING SAFE AT THE BEACH THIS SUMMER Most beachgoers will have an enjoyable and relaxing time when they visit the beach this summer. So when something goes wrong, who can help? RNLI Lifeboat Volunteers can respond within minutes, and often save lives close to the shore. But sometimes, at the beach, seconds count. This is where RNLI Lifeguards play a vital role, they can respond instantly if dangers develop. A good lifeguard's work is preventative; many lives have already been saved by their vigilance. When you’re heading to a beach, we urge you to visit a Lifeguarded Beach. Make sure you and your family have a safe and fun trip to the coast. If lifeguards are on patrol, then you’ll need to know your flags: RED AND YELLOW FLAG Lifeguarded area. Safest area to swim/bodyboard. BLACK AND WHITE CHEQUERED FLAGS For surfboards, stand-up paddleboards, kayaks and other non-powered craft. Launch and recovery area for kitesurfers and windsurfers. Never swim or bodyboard here. RED FLAG Danger! Never go in the water under any circumstances when the red flag is flying. During offshore or strong wind conditions. Never use inflatables when the windsock is flying. During this hot weather, you are reminded of the dangers of swimming in Rivers, Lakes, Quarries, etc. The water is very cold and jumping in can cause “Cold Water Shock” which is a killer. Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI), a charity registered in England and Wales (209603)

A SUMMER OF MEMORIES This month’s editor’s note comes from me, Sarah. I work with Anne at Glos Directories and have done for several years, so I thought it’s long overdue that I introduce myself to you, our lovely readers. My goodness, it’s August already! As the schools have broken up for their long summer break, I’m hoping we keep this lovely weather so us parents and kids can make the most of it. It can be hard to find things to do to keep children entertained, particularly if you work. But a planned day out is always great to have in the calendar. How about the Tibberton Show on the 19th of August for example? The annual event has been running continuously since 1945 and makes for a fun family day out. (See page 11 for more information.) When I was a child (a long time ago now!), I used to be sent out in the morning after
a hearty breakfast and was told not to come back until tea time. Oh, the things we got up to! Building dens, climbing trees and swimming in the river to name but a few. Many a time I would come home to my mum looking bedraggled with scratches on my elbows and knees. Those memories will stay with me forever. Whilst children today are often drawn to their Xbox or PS4, it really doesn’t take that much to distract them if there’s something better to do. Take a look at the What’s On section in the back of this magazine for some ideas on what you could do with your family this summer. We’ll see you in September when it’ll be nearly Chri… (no, I’m not going to say it!).
Sarah Dingwall

Short Story
Stanley’s Toenails By Jackie Brewster “Did you bring the sausages?” Peggy whispered, opening the caravan door. “Course,” Susan said, “are you going to let me in?” Susan was not in the best of moods. Her mum and Stanley were at the seaside for their honeymoon, and this was the third time she’d had to drive over to see them. “What’s up this time?” she sighed. “It sounded pretty urgent.” “It’s him.” Peggy nodded towards Stanley who was hunched over a jigsaw. “He’s got something wrong with his toenails.” “What sort of something?” Susan said. “They’re a funny colour.” Peggy lit the grill. “Are you ready for a sausage cob, Stanley?” “I was born ready,” Stanley said, rubbing his belly. “Let’s have a look at these toenails first, shall we?” Susan said, “Pop your feet up on the couch Stanley.” With much grunting Stanley obliged. At the sight of his toenails, Susan grimaced. Every nail was the colour of creosote. “That is odd,” she agreed. “Have you dropped something on them?”
6
touched one with her fingertip. It was sticky. “Thank you, Stanley,” she said firmly. ”Mother, I’d like a word in private.” “There isn’t anywhere private,” Peggy said. “It’s a static.” “Let’s step outside,” Susan insisted. Peggy tutted and removed her apron. “Are they going to drop off?” Stanley called as Susan shut the door behind them. Once out of earshot, Susan turned to Peggy. “Three times you’ve dragged me out here,” she said. “What’s all this about?” “That first time I’d forgotten my readers,” Peggy said. “And the second time?” Susan said. “When you thought there was a mouse?” “Just because you couldn’t find it didn’t mean there wasn’t one,” Peggy said. “Maybe,” Susan nodded, “but can you tell me why Stanley has got brown sauce on his toenails?” “Sauce?” Peggy feigned surprise.
“I don’t recall. I woke up like this.” He wiggled his toes. “They don’t hurt or nothing.”
“I’m guessing you put it there,” Susan said.
Susan studied the toenails and frowned. She reluctantly gave them a sniff. She
“Is someone keeping an eye on the sausages?” Stanley popped his head out the window.
“Why would I do a thing like that?”
“They’re lovely Susan, from the butcher’s on the parade.”
“So?” Susan said. “He liked them so much he keeps asking for more,” Peggy moaned, “and there isn’t even a butcher’s on the parade.”
“Just give them a turn, Stan,” Peggy called irritably. “What does he mean – the butcher’s on the parade?” Susan said. “I brought those sausages just like you asked me to, like I’ve done every time.” “Hush,” Peggy whispered, “Stanley doesn’t know.” “Don’t tell me you’ve dragged me all the way out here just to bring sausages?” Susan folded her arms. “Don’t be cross, Susie.” Peggy patted her daughter’s hand. “When we got here I needed a bit of time to myself, so I went for a walk. And when I got back I said I’d been to fetch sausages. I didn’t want to offend him, you see. I just cooked up the sausages I’d brought from home.”
CPAVING G &
“Mum, you’ve got to own up,” Susan sighed. “He’ll think he’s married a compulsive liar,” Peggy said. Susan laughed. “He’d be right, wouldn’t he?” “I’ll tell him the butcher has sold out,” Peggy offered, “but what about his toenails?” “Have him paddle in the sea,” Susan suggested. “It’ll wash off and he’ll think he’s cured.” “You’re a lifesaver.” Peggy gave her daughter a squeeze. “I’d better get back to Stanley’s sausages.” “You’re welcome Mum,” Susan smiled. “Don’t forget to ask him if he wants brown sauce.”

AT THE TOP OF MOUNT SNOWDON
Roll Up, Roll Up! For a great afternoon out, our TIBBERTON SHOW has it all. This year we are excited to welcome Engage Youth Circus, based in Cinderford, to help us celebrate 250 years of the circus in this country. Come and learn some new skills and marvel at the displays on the trapeze. Bring your dog to enter the dog show, treat yourself to a lovely tea and try your hand at our traditional sideshows, including the ever-popular crockery smashing, coconut shy and skittles, plus hot food and a licensed bar, ferret racing and craft displays – all this to brass band accompaniment. Parking is free!
In May we published the story of 11-year-old Amelia Larcombe from Newent who was getting ready to hike up Mount Snowdon in aid of MacMillan Cancer Support. We are happy to report that Amelia successfully completed the challenge she had set herself and managed not only to smash but to double her fundraising target of £500, raising an impressive £1,000 for the charity. Amelia didn't join a planned activity or organised event but decided to organise the hike herself with the help of her family as she wanted to give something back to the charity that supported her grandma and step-brother during their fights with cancer.
In the marquee, the Barn Dance takes place at 8pm, starring Hetty Pegler’s Tump with caller Dick Brice. August 18th 2018, 2-5pm, Taynton and Tibberton Village Hall, GL19 3AN Huge thanks to our sponsors Steve Gooch (Estate Agents) and Madge, Lloyd and Gibson (Solicitors) of Gloucester and Newent.

Amelia was scared but absolutely committed to complete the challenge. She set off with her step-dad and auntie at 9am and hiked for 6 hours. Luckily the weather was on her side and she was able to make it to the top. Well done, Amelia! Page 11

Successful Season for Newent Town A.F.C. Newent Town AFC had an amazing season just gone. Having been invited into the Hellenic system, they managed to win the Division 2 West title at the first attempt, fighting off competition from teams in Gloucester, Stroud, Wiltshire, Oxford and as far away as Swindon. Having put a comprehensive business plan together, they had meetings with The FA and applied to join Hellenic 1 West. This is where you enter the 'National League System' so things start to get more serious. A spokesman for Newent Town AFC said: "It will be a busy period for us now. We have a grant from the Football Stadium Improvement Foundation and will need to install floodlights before the dark nights draw in. We are
very much looking forward to this season, then next time around we intend to enter the FA Cup and the FA Vase, which would be quite amazing!” Having gained promotion in the Hereford league, our Reserve team have now joined Hellenic Division 2 West. This will be a big step up for the lads and they will need to strengthen their team. New players are always welcome, we have a very good pre-season schedule booked. Contact Phil Clarke (Club Secretary) on 07903 965 844 if you are interested. Established in 1920, this is Newent’s 99th year, let’s hope their Centenary is a good one! - Debbie Bignell

Several pupils did a speed check outside their school with a speed gun under the supervision of a Police Officer who stopped drivers who were driving above the 30mph speed limit. The pupils then designed posters and I was pleased to be asked to help choose 3 winners. Please note that the Council does not meet during August, except to consider planning applications. A Bid for Improvements at the Recreation Ground The facilities at the Recreation Ground in Watery Lane include changing rooms and a clubroom, currently housed in a separate temporary building owned by the Rugby Club which leases the space. An opportunity has arisen to replace the temporary building with a modest but permanent community and recreation facility comprising an activity room, kitchen and toilets. The new facility would be operated by the Town Council and be available to any group that wished to hire it.

Auction Anecdote Smiths of Newent’s June antiques sale featured a special section for clocks and watches and included a typical array of Rolex and other wrist watches which all sold well since this is a very strong area at present. However, readers may well be very surprised to learn that out of a range of attractive antique longcase and mantel clocks it was actually a rather ugly modern clock which reached the top price of the entire event. Antique longcase clocks are very unpopular at present and sometimes it can be rather depressing trying to find a new home for all but the best examples. By contrast, high quality modern hand-built regulator clocks seem to be very in fashion with clock enthusiasts getting all excited about the technicalities of the mechanism. Regulator clocks can often be quite unusual looking as all attention is given by the maker to the complex system of weights and gears which ensure the clock will have the highest level of accuracy. The example in Smiths’ sale was no exception and it was housed in a very functional rather than a decorative case. It had been made by a retired Admiralty scientist who had been involved in developing the first underwater television to help search for the lost submarine HMS Affray which sank in rather mysterious circumstances with all hands in 1951. He was obviously a bit of a ‘boffin’ and in his later years had taken up the challenge of designing and making his own regulator wall clock. From previous experience, I knew that these strange clocks can be very popular and so was not at all surprised that once the catalogue went online we had plenty of interest with email requests for further information and images. One buyer was very keen and sent several emails expressing his excitement and arranging to do a telephone bid. By auction day we had three telephone lines booked and the clock eventually sold for £4,200 to the delighted conversational collector. I have also had a further email telling me how pleased he is with his purchase – which is rather nice. - Written by Rita Kearsey Manager of Smiths Auction Room at Newent

LETHAL LEATHERJACKETS By Pippa Greenwood
Daddy-longlegs or crane-flies are starting to hatch out now – you may have seen their dangly-legged dancing as they get into your house, clattering against the windows and the lights? Maybe they are not your favourite creatures – indeed, many shy away from them! But these are the adults and it is their young – known as leatherjackets – that really cause grief in gardens. If your lawn has yellowing patches on it or you’ve noticed it being ripped up in th e last few weeks, chances are leatherjackets are to blame, and it is likely that the problem will get a lot worse. So what happens? Well, leatherjackets feed on the roots of grass (and can also cause problems in flowerbeds and vegetable plots) and this may cause the plants they attack to be weakened and even die back; worst of all, these juicy larvae are an extremely tasty snack if you happen to be an animal such as a crow, rook, magpie, badger or a fox. So as soon as there are leatherjackets in your garden, these animals come along in search of 18
them, ripping up your lawn or excavating beds and borders in the process. Lawns are usually worst affected and can be devastated in a matter of days. What is the best way to check if you have them? Early in the evening, water a couple of the yellowed patches really thoroughly and do the same with a patch that has been ripped up. Next, cover these areas in black polythene weighed down with a couple of bricks or similar. A double layer of black bin liners will do fine or, better still, use an opened-out plastic compost bag as this is particularly thick plastic. Next morning, lift the polythene and you’ll see the pests on the soil or lawn surface. So how do you know leatherjackets are to blame? Leatherjackets are even less goodlooking than their parents: greyish-brown, tubular, legless, up to about 4.5cm long and so nearly transparent that you can often see inside them, lunch and all. You can remove a good number by repeating this black polythene trick –
then, collect up the pests and put them on the bird table where they’ll be a useful source of free and nutritious bird food. If you want a much quicker, easier and more thorough solution then I suggest you use the biological control nematode ‘Nemasys Leatherjacket Killer’. It is quick and easy to apply – I just use a watering can and water it onto the affected area shortly after I’ve seen the first daddylonglegs and when soil conditions are right, so usually late August to late October. As long as you keep the area moist for about three or four weeks, it works a treat – and is even safe if you have a dog, pet rabbit or other pets (or kids!) who use the lawn. So how can you get hold of this? There are two pack sizes available,
suitable for standard lawns or those with a very large area to cover but you won’t find them in garden centres as they have a short shelf life. You can, however, find out more and order them from www. pippagreenwood.com/products in the Protect Your Plants section. We’ll send them out by first class post in an insulated envelope for you to show those pesky leatherjackets who’s the boss! Visit Pippa’s website www.pippagreenwood. com and you’ll find some great gardening items: Nemaslug, green controls for leatherjackets, chafer grubs, ants and greenfly, plus garden plant supports, raised bed kits, Easy-Tunnels, gardening tools, Grower Frames, signed books and more! You can even book Pippa for a gardening talk at your local gardening club.

A bit about the practice and some exciting news... Here at Leadon Vale Veterinary Centre, we pride ourselves on providing the very best of care to all pets, farm animals and horses in and around the Ledbury area. We have an extensive team of veterinary surgeons, registered veterinary nurses, student veterinary nurses and administration and reception staff, meaning that there is always a friendly, helpful member of our team on the other end of the telephone when you need us for routine appointments, emergency situations or even just some advice and reassurance. It is also worth noting that should you need us out of hours, we do our own 24hr emergency cover, which means that you will speak to our own duty vet. We are very excited to announce that we are now offering appointments with one of our registered veterinary nurses – Philippa Clarke RVN. Philippa is running Weight Management Clinics for those pets that have recently put on weight.
This involves a strict feeding regime with special calorie-controlled food and regular weigh-ins. She will also be carrying out Post Operative Dental Clinics (4-5 days after your pet has had a general anaesthetic and professional dental work has been carried out). In these appointments, we will be discussing the home care options available to reduce the frequency of dental work being required. There will also be some routine consultation appointments offered by Philippa, these will include nail clipping. These appointments will be being held at the surgery on a Tuesday and Thursday afternoon between 12pm and 2pm. If you would like to book an appointment with Philippa, please call the surgery and speak to a member of our team. A SEASONAL WARNING Please ensure all pets have access to shaded areas and fresh clean water. Avoid walking your dog in the middle of the day when the weather is at its hottest and do not leave dogs unattended in cars.

The event was in support of the international community, raising much-needed funds for our project to refurbish and further develop the Zilla Parishad School, Pune (India). During the event, the Club’s Soap Box Racer was officially launched and tested on the outfield of the cricket pitch. It entered its first race at the Richard’s Castle Fun Day on Sunday 8th July and came a creditable 7th out of 20 entries. An exciting and fun day was had by all! The Club would like to thank Lisa and the Briery Hill Llamas Centre, Kilcot for their very kind and generous donation to our charity fund in support of our efforts with the Soap Box project. Crab Parcels Makes 20
Ready in 40 minutes
These crisp filo pastry parcels with a crab and ginger filling make a tasty seafood starter for a special dinner or can be served as nibbles with refreshing drinks on a hot summer’s evening.
• 1 x 230g can crab meat, drained and flaked • 1 tsp grated fresh root ginger • 2 tbsp freshly chopped coriander • 2 spring onions, finely chopped
Cut the sheets of filo pastry into twenty 15cm squares. Take one square and brush lightly with water then top with a second pastry square. Place a spoonful of the crab mixture in the centre of the square. Brush the edges lightly with water and gather them together to enclose the filling and form a moneybag-shaped parcel.
• 8-10 sheets of filo pastry (see Tip)
Repeat with the rest of the pastry squares and filling to make 10 parcels in total. Half fill a large deep pan with vegetable oil and heat until a small piece of filo pastry dropped in the hot fat sizzles and browns in 20 seconds. Deep fry the parcels, in 2-3 batches, for 2-3 minutes until crisp and golden. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on kitchen paper.
• Vegetable oil for deep frying
Serve warm with sweet chilli sauce for dipping and garnished with shredded spring onion.
• 1 tbsp lime juice • Freshly-ground black pepper
• 4 tbsp sweet chilli sauce • Shredded spring onion, to garnish 28
Mix the crab meat, ginger, coriander, chopped spring onions and lime juice in a bowl. Season lightly with freshly-ground black pepper.
TIP Filo pastry sheets can vary in size so you may
need a few more if they are small. Keep the squares covered with a clean damp cloth or kitchen paper when filling, to prevent the pastry drying and tearing.

NEWENT EARLY YEARS CELEBRATING 1ST ANNIVERSARY Here at Newent Early Years, we are celebrating our first year in business which has been a huge success. We are a small, friendly preschool which provides exciting, stimulating and fun activities for children. Newent Early Years was established in May 2017 when Barnardos ceased operating the Children’s Centre. For a while it seemed that the provision might not survive the summer but, with support and encouragement from Gloucestershire County Council, the National Day Nursery Association, GRCC and PATA, Heidi Berry and Dawn Hemmings (two exBarnardos employees) decided to save the services and set up Newent Early Years. Barely two months after starting the venture there was a complete turnaround in our fortunes, and now we have over 25 children regularly enjoying the facilities. We run a preschool, breakfast and after school clubs and also Stay and Play Session on a Tuesday afternoon from 1pm to 3pm for a nominal charge. We are now working towards becoming a Curiosity Approach Accredited setting, a wonderful ethos that focuses on Curiosity, Awe and Wonder in Early Years. We strive to ensure that our children are happy, motivated and engaged. We offer funded (Nursery Education Grant, Achieving 2-year-olds and 30 hours funded) and private spaces at our preschool. Check your eligibility for 30 hours funding at www.childcarechoices.co.uk. For more information call 01531 822745, email heidi.berry@newentearlyyears.co.uk or follow us on Facebook. Page 29

SPORTING SUCCESS
We believe that a mix of opportunities to take part in, alongside competitive events, is the right approach to sports in Primary education. As such, at The Federation of Newent Schools, children get the opportunity to try out new sports like fencing, yoga, archery and street dance. Furthermore, we encourage our children 34

to take part in a range of competitive events both in school (through our house championship competitions) and out of school through the inter-school competitions. This year we are proud of the many successes our children have had: 3rd place in the District Mountain Biking; 3rd place in the Y3/4 Pentathlon; over 10 medals in the District Swimming Gala (including several golds and a number of district records) and most recently, winning the coveted GPJ multi-sports event. Home Products Coastal Chic
By Katherine Sorrell
Bring the seaside vibe to your home with a look that is light and bright, fresh and relaxed. Upside-down coastal house interior, designed by Stephanie Dunning of Dunning & Everard: 01722 710 608; dunningandeverard. com, photographed by David Parmiter.
Small seagull tea cosy, £36, Poppy Treffry: 01736 369 247; poppytreffry. co.uk.
Bird tea towel by Fine Little Day, £11.50, And Shine: 07765 530 607; andshine.co.uk. St Ives galvanised exterior up and down light, £33.50, The Farthing: 07789 707579; thefarthing. co.uk.
Natural wood small bird ornament, £11.50, Gisela Graham London: 020 7708 6396; giselagraham. co.uk.
Get the look: SunShine Style • A calm and relaxed vibe is the essence of coastal chic, and colour and texture go a long way towards achieving this. Go all white everywhere, or else think pale paintwork with accents of grey, beige and – of course – blue. Add some touches of natural wood for a lovely contrast. • Bring the outside in by including gorgeous natural elements. Driftwood is perfect, as are shells and coral (ethical, of course). Add some rope, wicker and maybe seagrass, coir or jute for a lovely contrast of textures. • It’s all about the light. Coastal homes are airy and breezy, so maximise light at the windows by hanging filmy curtains or white-painted wooden blinds, and arrange artificial lighting so that a central pendant is supplemented by a versatile selection of wall, table and floor lamps. • Choose fabrics for their crisp or floaty feel. Simplicity is key, so opt for linen, muslin and ticking, either plain or with a stripe. Bold stripes are more nautical, while barely-there stripes are more utilitarian – either way, the look is completely charming.
