Local Magazines Published by Glos Directories - connecting local businesses with local people
Dear Reader, Don’t you just love May? It’s the month that blesses us with not just one Bank Holiday – it gives us two! So now it is to decide what we will be doing on our extended weekends! Will it be a day out, a day in or will we be attempting a spot of DIY? Once again it is all down to the weather and if April was anything to go by we could have rain, sleet, hailstones, snow and maybe the odd bit of sunshine! May is also that time of the year when we start tot hear the sound of lawn mowers and strimmers buzzing away, as we attempt to tackle the garden that so far this year has been too sodden to even cut the grass. I’m really hoping for BBQ and gardening weather but if not, it will be the ideal time to get those jobs done around the house that I’ve been putting off for ages. Whatever you are planning to do on the two Bank Holidays this month, enjoy it because apart from the one in August, the next extra day off is Boxing Day! Enjoy reading your May issue and see you next month! Best wishes, Vicky Muller

"We have used other companies in the past, but none have cleaned our carpets as well as Churchdown Carpet & Upholstery Cleaning. I don't know how they do it but stains which look impossible to remove just seem to disappear. They take a lot of care with their work and it shows in the results. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend their service. Our carpets look like new again despite our grandson's food throwing exploits!" S Dring, Glos.

Computer Corner by Emily Trenwith A-Z of Computing - B is for Backup After A, it’s no surprise that we’ve arrived at B - for backup. This is probably one of the easiest things you can do to safeguard your data, but if I had a pound for every time someone told me (after their PC failed) that they didn’t have a backup - well, I wouldn’t be writing these articles! Your backup is like house insurance - could you afford to replace everything if it all disappeared in a house fire/IT disaster? You could replace your software, but what about those client files or photos of your children? For a home user, manually copying your files to a USB stick, external hard drive, or a free online storage service such as Dropbox or Google Drive should be sufficient. Alternatively, you can get Windows to back up for you automatically. Click the Start menu, then Settings > Update & security > Backup > Add a drive. You then tell your PC where to back up to - to change what gets backed up and how often, go to More options. If your USB drive isn’t plugged in all the time, it will back up next time you plug it in. For a business user, I’d recommend something more robust. Online backup services differ from simple storage services, in that they install software on your PC, which automatically backs up your data to their servers (which have built in redundancy so your data is safe even if a server fails). You will probably need to pay for this service - but imagine what it would cost you in terms of business if you were to lose your data. Online backup services differ in terms of how much storage is offered, how many PCs are covered and what the prices are - it’s worth comparing a few such as iDrive (not an Apple product!), BackBlaze, Crash Plan, Acronis etc and seeing if they do a free trial of the service. Services can start from £30 for a year, which is less than £3 a month. If you have a larger amount of data, you may want to look at an on site storage server. We’ve got one here at GMT Towers, which is accessible from both our locations in Newent and Bucks, and has built in redundancy with a RAID array (multiple hard drives, in English). This was a little trickier to set up, but is a one off cost for the server case and hard drives - after that, all it requires is a working internet connection. You may then want to add backup software, to backup automatically, or you could use the server as your primary storage and rely on the RAID array for backup. This solution starts at about £250 for the server case, plus the cost of hard drives and possibly an IT pro to set it up, depending on how confident you are! For larger businesses, we’d recommend different servers and larger capacity hard drives.
If you would like a free chat about backup, or have queries on anything else IT related, please contact us on newent@gmt-solutions.co.uk.

necessarily have to. For example, at the time of writing this, if you’re on uSwitch.com Npower’s standard tariff, which on e. typical usage is £1,110/year, you can switch to its cheapest 12 month fix, which is actually one of the market’s cheapest at £781/year – saving £320. at least move to your supplier’s cheapest. It’s worth noting some firms also operate under more than one name, for example British Gas is also Scottish Gas and Sainsbury’s Energy. Also some big suppliers offer far cheaper deals via ‘collective switches’ through local councils or comparison sites. So you may find you can save £100s and stay just where you are – but never sign up to a collective switch that doesn’t offer a full market comparison as part of it.
Quick Q&A “I’ve only got electricity, can I save?” There are cheap deals that allow electricity-only switching. Someone on a standard tariff paying £1,000/ year would pay about £750/year with the cheapest. Again, just do a comparison, same for economy 7.
“I’m on prepay (key or card meter) – can I switch?”
Yes. Someone with typical use on a standard prepay tariff pays £1,163/ year - the cheapest is £1,050/year, so a comparison and switch will help. Yet a normal billed meter paying fixed monthly direct debits is far, far cheaper. So if you can, it’s also worth considering if you can change to a normal billed meter, where usage is measured, and you’re billed after.
“I’m £100s in credit with my energy firm, will I get it back if I leave?” It should give you this money once you’ve switched. Many do it automatically, but make sure you ask if not. In the past, they used to operate a ‘don’t ask, don’t get’ policy, so if you’ve switched previously, it may be worth calling your old supplier to check. If you’re in debt you can usually switch, unless the debt’s very large – though you still have to pay it back what you owe.

Join us for our Open Morning, see the library and work with us for the "Big Garden Picnic"
The children had a lovely surprise after Easter when they returned to their classrooms, the library area had a revamp with bright new shelving and beanbags, paid for by The Friend's fundraising efforts. Now they have to choose some new books to fill the empty spaces with.
We recently raised over £200 with a family bingo night, and over £100 with “Eat for a Cause” which involved parents eating a lovely meal at The Three Choirs Vineyard, who then donated profits to the school. The money will go towards a new outdoor blackboard for the “Dick Whittington Outdoor Classroom” and some outdoor messy play equipment for the Infants.

In half-term on Friday 3rd June we are holding a “Big Garden Picnic” working party from 10.00am in the school gardens. We are inviting parents, friends, relatives, neighbours and in particular keen gardeners from Newent and around to come up to the school and help plant up the vegetable beds and containers. We need your help, so if you can donate any seeds, bedding plants, vegetable plants, cuttings, shrubs/anything we could grow, then please let us know or come and join in. Children will be welcome to play on the school field, under your supervision, and refreshments, tea and coffee will be available, but bring a picnic, a trowel and some gardening gloves. Come and enjoy some fresh Pauntley air The Pauntley Red Wheelbarrows are lined up ready! The school are holding an open morning for prospective pupils on Wednesday 8th June from 9.30 - 11.30am. Places are available for children aged 4 - 11 years. 10 Tips for a Happy Home Our home life affects pretty much every aspect of our lives and has a huge bearing on the level of enjoyment we experience in our activities on the outside. We lead busy lives these days with members of the family scattering in all directions, coming together for snatches of time. Stress levels can sometimes rocket right off the scale, leading to tension and aggravation. Times are tough and now almost more than ever in our recent history we need to have a safe haven where we can relax and feel comfortable, loving and loved. Like so many recipes the simplest are often the best and most effective. Creating a warm, loving, pleasant and comfortable home life isn’t rocket science. It really boils down to putting our family first – their feelings and how our actions can have a positive effect, or one of destructiveness. Try these tips and watch the reaction of those in your home, don’t tell just do. 1. Create something to look forward to both as individuals and collectively, get into the habit of having goals that you and your family can enjoy together. It is said that apparently people who play together seem to stay together. 2. Eat together once a day, around a table if possible, or at least make designated family meal days and absolutely at least one meal at weekends when all are there. 3. Listen – less telling and more listening.
Teenagers often voice a lot of rubbish as you did, but listen you don’t have to react. Become a great listener and your family will love you. 4. Actions speak louder than words so lead by example, children and young people NEED role models. 5. Look for the good things in and about each other and give compliments. 6. Try always to have something positive to say. Those meal times together should be fun times with a little bit of laughter so all participants look forward to the time together. 7. Praise is more powerful than criticism, but sadly very hard for some to do. 8. Demonstrate love and kindness. 9. At the end of each day share the good things that have happened during your day, however small or seemingly insignificant. 10. Keep anger out of the house, nobody else forces us to be angry, we allow ourselves to be angry. Anger is for East Enders, but not in your house.

MR SHAMBLES’ MAY MEWS Have you noticed how fantastic the huge beech tree looks as you walk into The Shambles from Church Street? As I pad down the long corridor by Erol’s it is a great surprise when you get down to the end. Mother Nature really does spoil us don’t you think? I was lucky enough to have a wander into the opening night of ‘The Gallery’ at the beginning of last month. It was packed! I’d like to think they were all there to see me, however judging by the red dots next to the beautiful works, I think perhaps they were there for the art! I have to say, the canapes smelled lovely and one of the waitresses gave me a bit to taste...yummy! The Gallery @ The Shambles is open 12noon – 4pm from Tuesday – Sunday...purrrfect for increasing my fan club! Enchanted seem to be increasing their range of interesting gifts and quirky items. Hazel is expanding her essential oil selection so it’s well worth coming in for a look! Lots of sun catchers and lovely things to have in the garden are coming in as well, I love the recycled bottle lanterns and the twisty things...fascinating to watch when you are a cat! Zap Laser Clinic has a fabulous offer on non-invasive Liposuction! Anything that doesn’t require needles or general anesthetic sounds brilliant to me...I’m not a brave puss... vast amount of procedures she can do with her magic machine. Or phone her – the number is on the advert! Gill’s Bookshop seems to draw people in like a magical magnet and not just for the books. Gill has lots more things for sale: paintings and prints of all sizes, china, baskets and those sort of nicknacks that you hardly ever come across but smile to yourself when you do. I was meowing with Gill the other day and she asked me to remind people about her books on all things “Train”, especially her specialty books on the Great Western Railway. In fact she has books on just about every subject you can imagine and she’ll try to get you any book you ask for if she hasn’t already got it. Mal at Survival Supplies UK (AKA The Best Man Cave for Miles) has moved shops again! He’s still in Shambles Village, but now in an even bigger shop just round the corner from Old Nicks Studio. My word, his range of angling equipment (and everything else for that
matter) is growing rapidly and he’s promised that he’ll have maggots and pellets in before the fishing season starts...and he’s just a cat’s whisker away from Newent Lake. Purrrrfect! He told me he had that £200 torch that’s splurged all over the internet for only £10.99! WOW! He’s also stocking Mora, Opinel and Swiss Army knives and even has a line of camo clothing now. Nick and his brother Dee at Old Nicks Tattoo Studio seem to going flat out at the moment. The whole world seems to have suddenly woken up to their artistic and creative talents. There just doesn’t seem to be anything or anywhere they can’t tattoo. I’ve just seen a young lady leaving with the most beautiful flowers all the way up her leg and a man with a magnificent and colourful dragon on his back. They’re also experts at cover-ups...but not over the top like you see on those programmes on TV. They also do the little additions that some people like to add to existing tattoos. Fantastic!

Auction Anecdote A box of costume jewellery proved to be the hiding place for our top result in the April antiques sale. An old amber necklace immediately caught my eye when I opened up the box of ‘trinkets’ – to my excitement it was the very distinctive ‘old egg yolk’ yellow that Chinese buyers have been paying top prices for in recent years. The necklace ticked all the boxes not only with its opaque matt colouring but also with its size, age and long length. Amber of this particular type sells for at least twice the price of gold and is bought by the gram, although larger sized beads are particularly valued and used to make up Buddhist rosaries. The necklace was estimated at a cautious £500/£700 since the amber market has been a little unpredictable lately and has dropped off slightly from some rather frenzied buying of around two years ago.To Western eyes this recent boom in amber all seems rather bizarre, however the Chinese believe it has powers of good luck and signifies high status – it is also used in Chinese medicine for it’s soothing and healing properties. It is now viewed in the same light as other high value materials such as jade, ivory, coral and Rhino horn – perhaps since some of these other materials have rightly become harder to come by in recent years, amber has become more sought after as an ethical and acceptable alternative. There was moderate interest in the amber necklace during the run up to the sale from local dealers, a few email enquiries and a telephone line was booked from further afield. Typically however it was the online interest which took it right up to £1800 on the day - when it was sold to a Chinese buyer in London. The vendor, who had travelled from Chippenham to watch the sale, was amazed and delighted as she watched the proceedings – she had had no idea these ‘tatty yellow beads’ were of interest to any one. Smiths next auction on the 13th May has a special section for silver, gold and jewellery – viewing is on the 12th May 10am-7pm and the fully illustrated catalogue is online from the 6th May. The Grass Can Be Greener by Pippa Greenwood
Your garden should now be starting to look lush and green, with beds and borders beginning to come into their own. But if your lawn spoils it all, or you want to install one, now is the perfect time to get started. PreParing the site Remove all weeds, large stones, debris and any old grass, then dig or fork over thoroughly to remove all taproots of weeds. Kill off an old lawn or a weed infested site with weedkiller based on glyphosate, then strip it off or dig it in once it all dies off. Incorporate organic matter to improve moisture retention on sandy soils; on heavy soils dig in grit and organic matter for drainage. Next, firm the whole area by treading it over evenly in flat-soled boots, then rake thoroughly and remove stones or other debris from the surface, treading gently down again if necessary. Buying turf Buy turf from a reputable supplier which is suitable for your requirements – some, especially those including lots of dwarf ryegrass, are much tougher, while some contain a seed mixture for use in shade. Page 22
A ‘bowling green’ effect may look superb but will need more maintenance and be less hardwearing. Avoid cheaper turf as it can contain weeds, pests or diseases, or is simply not a good grass mixture. Arrange delivery of turf when you need it and never store for more than two days. It can remain rolled up for up to 24 hours, but for any longer unroll immediately, lay out flat on paving or plastic sheeting and water regularly. Laying the turf Lay turves closely together and do not allow the edges to overlap. For an even finish, joins on each row should be staggered, like bricks in a wall. Lay the first row of turf using the adjacent path or lawn edging to form a straight line to work to. Roll out each turf carefully so that the edge abuts onto its neighbour. Lay the next row, again ensuring that the long edges of each abut onto the long edges of the last row. To avoid damage, kneel on a plank placed over the previous row and continue until your new lawn is in position. If you need a small section of turf to complete a row, add this in the middle of a row rather
than at the end so it is less likely to be dislodged or dry out. For a curved edge lay the turves so that they overlap the new lawn edge and cut to shape. When finished, gently tamp the area over using the back of a rake and if any turves sink place some extra soil underneath until they are level. Finally, brush in a mixture of horticultural sand and finely sieved soil over the surface, ensuring that gaps between the turves are filled in. Care and maintenanCe Gently water the new lawn using a sprinkler, ensuring that the water penetrates right down to the root level. Water regularly in dry weather, particularly for the first couple of months whilst the roots establish and avoid walking on it during this time. You will soon have a gorgeous lawn to be proud of. Healthy Bodies and Healthy Minds At Hartpury Primary School we believe that every aspect of school life is crucial to the all-round development of young children. That is why we have tried to make sure that the children have plenty of opportunities during their free time to further build on their health, fitness, co-operation and friendship skills. During break and lunch times our outstanding midday supervisors allow the children to access a whole range of engaging activities. There are the usual playground games of tag, chase and roleplay and our large grounds allow children to access the field for football, cricket and rugby. The children also have access to two adventure playgrounds which provide challenge to both older and younger children and help build on fundamental movement skills. Our very own Year 6 play leaders organise games and activities for the
younger children. A comprehensive range of playground equipment is always in full use, including: ten pin bowling, tennis, circus skills kit, space hoppers, hula hoops and much more. There is a designated area of the playground zoned off to allow children to practise their scooting and cycling skills making use of the range of bikes and trikes and promoting road safety. And for those children that would like something a little different... Our Outdoor education leader provides a range of seasonal seeds and plants for the children to sow and tend in our raised beds. The children have full access to gardening tools and equipment and the older children support the younger children in learning how to garden their plots. The playground is also home to a range of musical instruments that live permanently outside. Children often collaborate to compose music together and perform in bands. The school also has a small wooded area that children absolutely love to play in. They focus on conservation, use fallen wood to build dens, look for evidence of wildlife and hide amongst the trees and long grass. And what’s more, our tremendous fundraising friends committee have supplied the school
Page 24
with wet weather gear for all the children so all the activities are fully accessible whatever the weather. During break times at Hartpury every child is fully engaged. Playtimes are educational, stimulating, where all our pupils have the chance to try something new, develop existing skills and have fun with friends. Home & Interiors Spruce Up Your Home Office
Dodgy desk, awkward chair or overflowing shelves? It’s time to give your home office a facelift, says Katherine Sorrell Whether your working space is a corner of the kitchen used for catching up with email, or a high-spec office with everything necessary for fulltime self-employment, it needs to work for you. A few small improvements can make your workspace more comfortable, functional and attractive.
could consider adding a small worktop to one side of your existing desk, or improve your organisation with a new desk that incorporates drawers, cubby holes, shelves or whatever other type of storage you need. If you can, use nearby walls to lift as much as possible off the surface of your desk by introducing wall-mounted storage such as shelves, pin boards, peg boards or hanging racks. Anything that stacks is useful, too. Before you know it, you’ll be able to see your laptop again.
Start with a clear out and a tidy up: go through your old paperwork, stationery, books etc. and give it away, recycle it, file it well out of the way or bin it, as appropriate, and you’re bound to create extra space. Then, sort out messy cabling with extension leads, cable clips or by adding an extra double plug socket.
A lack of storage probably goes for home offices more than any other space in the house. You may be happy with buying a conventional filing cabinet and/or bookcase, but don’t be afraid to look beyond the usual office suppliers: vintage and industrial pieces can add an element of unexpected style to brighten up your work time. Add boxes, baskets, trolleys, racks and desktop accessories in colours and textures that suit your space and personal style.
Next: your desk. If you are still running out of room, you

a facelift with the paintbrush? Neutrals are undeniably good for concentration, but go for bold colours if they make you happy. Blackboard paint comes in a range of colours and is a great option for sections of walls, desk tops or cupboard fronts where you might want to chalk up some notes. And, how about adding pretty curtains or blinds, an eye-catching rug, a display of collectibles or a dramatic painting or framed photograph? A comfortable chair is a must and an adjustable office chair on castors is best. If yours is dull or ugly, either re-upholster it, make a loose cover or, at worst, hang a length of fabric over the back and add an attractive cushion. Another essential is a good desk light – choose one that is bright, adjustable and that you love the look of. There’s an enormous choice, at prices to suit every budget. For the final details, add accessories to brighten up your life, from a good-looking waste bin to a house plant, some colourful wall art or a scented candle. Let’s face it, the more you enjoy being at work, the more productive you’ll be. Image - A good desk is essential. The new Phineas desk is made from oak and has two cubby holes, drawers, and a cut-out for cables. It costs £545 from Loaf, tel 0845 468 0698; www.loaf.com

Craig's Comment At present less than one person in every ten who suffers a heart attack out of hospital will survive. That is a statistic that needs to change!
As little as twenty minutes CPR training is all that it takes to give someone the basic skills and confidence needed to help keep someone who has suffered a heart attack alive while help is on the way. British Heart Foundation is leading the way in providing training, skills and equipment so that we can become that Nation of Lifesavers.
positive impact that it could make on a friend, loved one, family member, work colleague, or even a total stranger really could make all the difference.
In England just over 75% of emergency calls for an ambulance are responded to within the eight minute target. Although this is considerably better than in other parts of the UK, it still means that around 25% of emergencies do not see an ambulance within that eight minutes.
These skills are even more important in a rural area like the Forest. With its narrow lanes and remote villages it could be that the ambulance takes a little longer than average to get to an emergency. If we can help keep someone breathing until that ambulance arrives then the chances of survival skyrocket.
Whether you are a parent, teacher, youth leader, councillor, community activist or employer, you can apply for your British Heart Foundation CPR training kit from their website at: www.bhf.org.uk/heart-health/ nation-of-lifesavers so that you not only become part of a Nation of Lifesavers, but part of a Forest of Lifesavers as well.
Ambulance services, NHS staff, and paramedics do a brilliant job, however there is a role for all of us to play in helping save lives. British Heart Foundation are on a mission. Their goal is to create a nation of lifesavers over the next five years. In doing so we would not only see that one on ten statistic become one in 20, or perhaps even one in 100, but we would also reduce the pressure on those brilliant paramedics that do arrive at the scene of a heart attack.
British Heart Foundation have made CPR kits, along with training DVDs, available for free to all schools and youth groups in the country. They are also working with employers and community groups to provide training as well. Once you and your group have the kit it takes just a few minutes each month to keep those skills fresh and up to date. This is such a small amount of time out of our busy lives, but the
With more than 30,000 cardiac arrests happening outside of a hospital each year across the UK you never know when you might be called on to become a lifesaver.
Craig is the District Councillor for Oxenhall and Newent North East. If Craig is your councillor you can contact him on craig.lawton@ fdean.gov.uk. To find out who your District Councillor is you can contact Forest of Dean District Council on 01594 810000.
Things getting messy for Newent artist
Visitors to Labels Shopping, located on the outskirts of Ross-on-Wye, were invited to paint their hands and leave a handprint as a record of their visit to the store on a huge full wall-size mural of a tree painted by local Newent artist Victoria Taylor. “Drawing and painting is my passion.” Said Victoria. ”I’ve recently started drawing illustrations for children’s books so I was absolutely delighted to be invited by Labels to expand my work from the size of a page to a complete wall mural. It was quite a challenge and I enjoyed every minute of it.”
William (6) and Verity (4) with Mum, Victoria Taylor, adding their handprints to Victoria’s full-size wall mural at Labels Shopping, Ross-on-Wye.
Victoria’s two children, Willian (6) and Verity (4) returned to Labels Shopping last week with Mum in order to add their own handprints to the tree mural.
Sam Morris who specialises in realistic paintings of champion pedigree cattle and designs commercial stylized illustrations which she sells all over the UK including at the new ‘Handmade & Local’ at Labels where local artists and craftspeople can display and sell their wares.
“It looks amazing.” Said Victoria. “I can’t believe how many people have taken the time to get messy and add their handprints.”
The mural paintings were part of a host of popular activities that were organised for families to watch and take part in over the Easter holidays at Labels Shopping.
Victoria’s work joins another wall-size painted mural on the lower ground floor at Labels Shopping by local cow artist
Labels Shopping, Ross-on-Wye, is located just off junction 4 of the M50.

Thai Beef Salad Ready in 50 minutes, plus marinating time
Serves 4
This colourful and fragrant main-meal salad is great for easy entertaining. Choose thick pieces of steak and take care not to overcook them or they will become tough and chewy.
Ingredients: • • • • • • • • • • •
2 x 175g sirloin steaks 1 tbsp lime juice 2 tbsp light soy sauce 1 garlic clove, peeled and crushed 1 tsp dried chilli flakes 6 spring onions, trimmed and thinly sliced 8 radishes, trimmed and thinly sliced 100g fresh bean sprouts 1/4 cucumber, thinly sliced 4 firm plum tomatoes, quartered 200g mixed salad leaves
FOR THE DRESSING • • • • •
Page 40
juice of 2 limes 2 tbsp Thai fish sauce 2 tsp brown sugar 1 tbsp fresh chopped coriander 1 tsp finely chopped lemon grass
Place the steak in a shallow dish. Mix together the lime juice, soy sauce, garlic and chilli flakes. Season with freshly ground black pepper and cover and leave to marinate for 1 hour. Heat a cast iron skillet or griddle until very hot. Add the steak and cook for 4-6 minutes on each side. Remove from the pan, cover with foil and leave to rest for 15 minutes. Toss together the spring onions, radishes, bean sprouts, cucumber, tomatoes and salad leaves. Mix together all the dressing ingredients, stirring until the sugar has dissolved. Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Slice the warm steak thinly across the grain. Toss gently into the salad with the dressing. Pile into a large shallow serving dish and serve immediately, or leave to cool and serve chilled.
TIP Lemon grass stalks are sold in small packs
by the fresh herbs in the supermarket. You only need a small amount to give an extra zesty fragrance to the dressing but the stalks will keep for 1-2 weeks in the fridge. Try adding chopped to curries, fruit salads or infuse in hot water for a refreshing alternative to tea.

Alzheimer’s: How Can We Fight Back?
Alzheimer’s is the most common type of dementia in the UK, affecting over 500,000 people - and public awareness is higher than ever, thanks partly to Terry Pratchett’s well-publicised diagnosis and death. But as we welcome Dementia Awareness Week (May 15th-21st), are we any closer to understanding Alzheimer’s causes - and preventing or curing it? What Causes Alzheimer’s? In Alzheimer’s patients, betaamyloid protein builds up to form ‘plaques’ or ‘tangles’ in the brain, preventing nerve cell connections and eventually causing loss of brain tissue. There is also a neurotransmitter shortage. These problems produce dementia symptoms such as memory loss, behaviour changes and a decreased ability to process information and stimuli, which increase in number and severity over time. Can We Prevent Alzheimer’s? Some risk factors for Alzheimer’s are unavoidable. Alzheimer’s is more common if: • You’re over 65 (occurrence rapidly increases over 85). • There is a family history of Alzheimer’s or you carry the apolipoprotein E (APOE) gene or MTHFD1L gene.
Page 42
Other genes are specifically responsible for rare, earlyonset Alzheimer’s (although this is not solely hereditary). • You have Down’s syndrome, which can cause amyloid plaque build-up in the brain. • You’re a woman – even accounting for your longer lifespan, although it’s not clear why. Avoidable risk factors: • Excessive alcohol intake. • Heart disease risk factors such as smoking (including passive smoking), lack of exercise, high blood pressure, high cholesterol levels and being overweight. • A lack of mental activity - so keep your mind active by reading, playing strategic games (e.g. chess) or completing word puzzles. Diabetes, depression and head injury also increase the risk of Alzheimer’s. While not necessarily ‘avoidable’, you can lower your chance of developing depression and diabetes through lifestyle choices, seek treatment for depression, and wear a helmet when biking or engaging in hazardous pursuits to reduce risk of head injury. Although more research is required, recent studies suggest risk can also be reduced by: • Sleeping on your side rather than your back or stomach, allowing the brain to remove waste products more efficiently. • Getting enough sleep. • Reducing your stress. • Staying sociable and avoiding loneliness. • Following the MIND diet: plenty of vegetables (in particular, green leafy ones), along with nuts, berries,
beans, whole grains, fish, poultry, olive oil and wine (in moderation), and limiting intake of red meats, butter, hard margarine, cheese, pastries, sweets, and fried or fast foods. Can We Cure Alzheimer’s? Not yet. However, there are treatments to alleviate symptoms. Cognitive Stimulation: enjoyable activities that stimulate thinking and encourage engagement. CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy): to help sufferers discuss concerns and adopt more positive ways of thinking. Alternative Therapies such as aromatherapy, massage or music therapy. Drug treatments: cholinesterase inhibitors such as Donepezil (Aricept), Galantamine (Reminyl) and Rivastigmine (Exelon) increase levels of the neurotransmitter acetycholine, They can sometimes improve brain function in sufferers with mild to moderate Alzheimer’s. For severe Alzheimer’s (or moderate Alzheimer’s, unresponsive to cholinesterase inhibitors), Memantine (Ebixa or Axura) may slow the decline in brain function. Medicines to reduce depression, agitation, anxiety and aggression may also be given. Hope for the Future Researchers are working on Alzheimer’s prevention, identification of further genetic markers and potential treatments such as ultrasound waves and drugs already used for diabetes and rheumatoid arthritis.

Sweet Memories Easter Raffle
This year Sweet Memories in Newent held a raffle to raise funds for Newent's Christmas Lights Festival with the prize being a giant rabbit. As well as Sweet Memories a number of pubs and clubs around Newent took part - The George Hotel, The Circle Club, The Kings Arms, The Red Lion and Cobblers. Prizes were won in some of these venues then all the raffle tickets were put into a grand draw at Sweet Memories. The grand draw prize of the giant rabbit was won by Kevin Norman
from Huntley who said "I am happy to support the local town". With the raffles held at Christmas and Easter plus the donations from traders the total raised was £741! Edwina, proprietor of Sweet Memories, said "I felt as traders we should help the Lights Committee, who already do a difficult job, to keep the Lights Festival going as it does so much for Newent and the traders and public responded very well."

Youth@Heart
We take the gift of our children’s good health for granted – but a healthy baby is a miracle. There are currently over 5,000 young people aged 16-24 with Congenital Heart Disease in the South West, of which 600 have complex conditions. These young people are all supported by the Bristol Heart Institute. They and their families are battling to come to terms with the physical and emotional challenges of life limiting, or terminal heart conditions. Youth@Heart was set up in memory of Alice Lawson who struggled with CHD. She was determined to make a difference to the lives of others in a similar position. Sadly Alice died aged

just 22, before she could see her vision realised. 85% of children born with CHD now survive into adulthood, but face an uncertain future. Their emotional health is challenging and affects their physical health. Our aims are to: • Fund a Community Cardiac Youth Worker, undertaking a liaison role between the young person, medical professionals and community provision. Their focus will be on the young person’s holistic needs and will provide support for their emotional wellbeing. • To offer support, awareness and opportunity to teenagers, young adults (16 to 24) and their families in Gloucestershire (and across the South West),

Golden Years
Memories of 50 Years Ago by Ted Bruning
It sometimes seems that the world is being engulfed by an unstoppable tsunami of terrorism. The Islamic world in particular is in flames from Nigeria to the Hindu Kush; the seas and beaches of the Mediterranean are awash with a flotsam and jetsam of drowned refugees; and as nobody can agree either on the cause or the solution there seems no end in sight. The present horrors are on such a vast scale because the political upheavals that caused them were themselves so vast. But if you look back 50 years you might perhaps conclude that little has changed: in 1966 the Vietnam War was intensifying; the Biafran War was erupting; India and Pakistan were also at war; as many as 70,000 Egyptian troops, as well as Saudi and Jordanian forces, were bogged down in the eightyear Yemeni Civil War. Nowhere, it seemed, was immune – not even Britain, where on 7th May 1966 the petrol-bombing of a Belfast pub started a fire that burned for 28 years. The conventional narrative of the Troubles is that the flashpoint came in August 1969 with the Battle of the Bogside, three days of nationalist riots in support of Northern Ireland’s hitherto-peaceful Civil Rights movement. The riots followed a bloodless bombing campaign against water, telephone, and
Page 46
electricity installations which was blamed on the IRA and which forced the resignation of the province’s moderate prime minister, Terence O’Neill. But in reality, the violence had started three years earlier, and the IRA – which at the time was virtually defunct – had nothing to do with it. The Northern Ireland Civil Rights Association had been formed in 1964 to campaign against discrimination against the province’s Roman Catholics in jobs, housing, education, public spending, and political representation, and O’Neill was well-disposed to negotiations. Alarmed, the Protestant community reacted. Ian Paisley founded the Ulster Constitutional Defence Committee and its paramilitary wing, the Ulster Protestant Volunteers, and an ex-military policeman named Gusty Spence founded the Ulster Volunteer Force. It was Spence’s UVF that drew the first blood. On 8th March 1966, the IRA summoned up the energy – and the dynamite – to blow up a statue of Nelson in Dublin (pictured above). Spence’s UVF retaliated two months later, petrol-bombing a Catholic-owned bar in the largely Protestant Shankill Road. The only casualty was the bar’s neighbour, 77-yearold Protestant widow Matilda Gould, who died of her injuries in hospital six weeks later. And with that horrible irony, the Troubles had begun. In the years that followed some 3,600 were murdered – nobody knows for certain how many. Maybe 800 of them were security personnel, and many of the civilian dead were terrorists
themselves – again, nobody knows for certain how many. Most, though, were blameless pubgoers and passers-by, bombed or shot at random, or chosen for torture and death as suspected informants. But how did it all come to an end? Who won and who lost? Well, democracy won, as it always does. The nationalists secured some concessions, but as long as Northern Ireland remains firmly attached to the UK they can hardly claim victory. The Troubles fizzled out because the insurgents ran out of energy and the democratic politicians kept their nerve. They were tough, uncompromising, and determined. But they made it clear that while the terrorists weren’t going to win anything, there’d always be a place at the table for them – as in Israel, Kenya, and Cyprus – if they renounced violence. In the end, and after serving 18 years for murder, even Gusty Spence, the man who started it all, saw sense and became a democratic politician. Could the same process bring peace to the Middle East? Could Al-Baghdadi one day take his seat as a Syrian MP? Remember Menachem Begin; remember Jomo Kenyatta; remember Archbishop Makarios. Perhaps we should send Gerry Adams and Martin McGuinness to Razza to talk some sense into him!

May Activities at Sheppard House Spring is now in full bloom and how nice to hear the dawn chorus each morning. We have some exciting times ahead of us in May this year. Straight after the Bank Holiday we will be having a day on the Willow Boat along the river. Let’s hope and pray for some good weather! Following on from that we have been very fortunate to have John and Jenny Eastwood coming to give us the 2nd half of their slides on Switzerland. It’s so lovely to go abroad without queuing at the airport! A couple of mornings in the month we will be visiting the Longhope Artisan Bakery to see how bread is
made. You will also have the chance to buy some of this delicious bread and have a cup of coffee. We will still be doing out regular Tai Chi classes, Arts and Crafts and Scrabble Club. If you are interested in taking part please ring 01531 821227 to find out dates, times and cost. Why not stay and have a fresh home cooked 2 course lunch for only £6.00. It’s a great time to be social and meet new friends and not have any washing up to do! At the end of the month to round things up we are going to take some of the clients out for the day to Pengethly Garden Centre for lunch and tea which is always enjoyed by all. Don’t forget if you would like to be involved in some of the activities then please contact us and we will do our best to accommodate you. Everyone is welcome at Sheppard House at anytime.
Newent's first Poetry Workshop
"It was very liberating to listen to someone with such a pragmatic and passionate approach to poetry"
On the 7th April The George Hotel hosted Newent's first Poetry Workshop. The event was organised by Samantha Samms who said "I have successfully held poetry workshops elsewhere and I wanted to bring my experience and expertise to the people of Newent for those who want to start or re-start writing poetry."
Other workshops are planned for the future. Anyone interested should contact Samantha Samms on SamanthaSamms@outlook.com or on 07743 381360 or through her Facebook Page - Samantha Samms comedian and poet.
The event got off to a good start and once everyone was settled it started with confidence building and 'myth busting' about poetry before moving on to exercises and activities to get the creative juices flowing. There were some lovely lines, some moving, some funny and by the amount of laughter in the room it was clear they were all enjoying it but most importantly poetry was being written.
Sue Trevethan, Ross on Wye
Samantha Samms is a local Newent poet and this year has already been booked for the Cheltenham Poetry Festival, the Wychwood Festival and this year's Big Lunch. Samantha is also starting a tour of WI's around Gloucestershire giving talks on "Poetry is my passion.'' - written by Colin Thomas, Crystal Flame Photography
Samantha commented "Poetry, which many think of as a serious affair, is actually an enjoyable and stress reducing activity for all. In this workshop it was possible to see a group of people engaging in a fun, creative activity in a supportive and facilitative atmosphere. I love running these workshops and I love seeing the positive change that comes over people in just a few hours." I would like to thank all those who attended and thanks to their participation enjoyment and enthusiasm, the workshop actually planned for 2 hours, went on for nearly 3 hours!" Some comments from a selection of the attendees:
"Good ideas on how to start writing poetry, I loved it." Irene Tyrell, Newent
"Loads of fun, thanks for a lovely workshop. I really enjoyed it!" Adrian Berry, Newent "A good balance of teaching and writing." Jacky Wallace, Newent

Thinking Of A Guinea Pig As Your Family Pet? Guinea pigs can be an ideal choice for young families looking for a ‘low profile’ pet. Although certainly low profile in terms of size, they live for five to six years on average so this is not a short-term commitment. As inherently social animals they are happiest when living as part of a group, or with one other guinea pig. It’s not a good idea to buy two male guinea pigs together, however, unless they are from the same
Page 52
litter. Human contact is also very important, and they will thrive on gentle interaction with you and your family. Are there any specific health issues to consider? Eye and respiratory problems are often experienced, and are usually caused by a reaction to dusty bedding or by being in a draught. It’s important to provide them with a constant supply of dust-free hay, and toys they can chew on to prevent their front teeth from growing excessively. A diet rich in vitamin C will help to keep them healthy.
PETS Dark green leafy vegetables are ideal, as are oranges and melons, which help to redress their natural vitamin C deficiency. Make sure they also have a constant supply of fresh water, either in a heavy bowl or a gravity-fed bottle attached to their cage. Guinea pigs need to feel secure, both inside their hutch and when they’re being handled. Always pick them up with both hands, and either sit down or hold them close to your body to keep them safe. http://www.petsathome.com/ shop/en/pets/guinea-pig-careadvice By Ann Haldon

External Parasites of Dogs & Cats Fleas and Ticks With the warmer weather upon us this springtime, fleas and ticks will become extremely prevalent. Dogs and cats are out more, exploring and hunting in the sunshine, and whilst parasites are a problem all year round, they are mainly a problem in the summertime. They are particularly rife in areas where there is rough foliage and bracken. Ticks act as vectors, in the same way that a mosquito transmits malaria by sucking the blood from a person; the tick does the same to an animal. In the process of feeding, the disease will transmit from the tick to the dog or cat. This can cause irritation and a localised infection. Ticks sometimes also carry diseases such as Lyme disease. Babesiosis, a disease carried by a new imported tick (Dermacentor), has recently been recorded in the UK; it was first seen in Essex. The parasite causes the dog’s immune system to attack its own

New poetry event for Newent After a successful Poetry Workshop a new poetry event is coming to Newent.
It is described as the most fun you can have with your clothes on!
The event entitled "Performance Poetry and Tapas Event" will take place in The George Hotel Restaurant on Friday the 20th May at 7.30pm.
Samantha says "You will see poetry with passion and performance that takes your pulsing heart and presents it back to you with a side order of 'Wow'. Come and see what is taking London by storm - funny, thoughtful, lyrical and powerful poems, and even some about football (and maybe rugby!)."
Following on from the recent successful poetry workshop, organiser and local poet Samantha Samms brings Performance Poetry to Newent and coupled with a fine Tapas from new chef Sean the Chef this will make for a tremendous evening.
Samantha can be contacted at: SamanthaSamms@outlook.com Facebook page: Samantha Samms Comedian and Poet Mobile: 07743 381360 Keep an eye on Samantha's Facebook page for further in formation on future events and workshops. - written by Colin Thomas, Crystal Flame Photography
As well as performances from Samantha there will be performances from other poets and performers, details to be advised. There will also be open mic slots where you are welcome to come and read your own poems. If you thought poetry was boring and too intellectual or not for a night out, think again. Poetry is vital, alive and coming to Newent." Tickets are £12 in advance (£14 on the door).

OnionEd’s Blog The daffodils are starting to bloom; Spring is in the air and naturally my thoughts turn to Onions - and of course preparing to make Gloucestershire's biggest one day festival a success for its 21st year.
This event is being brought to you by 'Samantha (poetry is my passion) Samms'.
If you haven't given it a thought before now's your chance to get involved. All you need is the right advice and a bit of patience and you can be in with the chance of top cash prizes this September. You can get some advice on my website www.newentonionfayre.org.
Whilst hanging around the allotments I’ve been excited to see the onion growers out in force, readying themselves for this year's competition at the onion show.
Even if you are not 'green fingered' and not an onion grower, there's plenty of other things to get involved in including the famous onion eating competition!
Unfortunately, I'm not allowed to get involved in the onion show as according to the judges I'm 'head and shoulders above the rest'! I still enjoy sizing up the competition though and I can't wait to see all the entrants this year in the market Hall.
The onion fayre committee has come together once more, with some new faces, new plans and great ideas falling into place. The excitement is building already and it is lovely to see the spaces for stalls filling up so fast. To book a space visit the

The Gloucestershire Chest Fund The Gloucestershire Chest Fund is a small, local, nonprofit making registered charity founded in 1991 by Mrs Doreen Roberts, a lifelong sufferer from chest disease, and two respiratory disease consultants from Standish Hospital. The charities aim is to help create centres of excellence for the detection, diagnosis and treatment of chest diseases in the county of Gloucestershire. The Fund does not supply basic equipment that should be, and is, supplied by the NHS but answers the call from the county's Consultant Chest Physicians for high tech equipment not yet available from that source.
