THOMAS & SMITH WINDOW CLEANING SERVICES
Open in June for the National Garden Scheme charity. Birtsmorton Court has a 10-acre garden surrounding a beautiful medieval moated manor house (not open). White garden, built and planted in 1997 surrounded on all sides by old topiary. Potager, vegetable garden and working greenhouses, all beautifully maintained. Rare double working moat and waterways including Westminster Pool laid down in Henry VII’s reign to mark the consecration of the knave of Westminster Abbey. Ancient yew tree under which Cardinal Wolsey reputedly slept in the legend of the Shadow of the Ragged Stone. The National Garden Scheme enables you to see beautiful gardens not usually open to the public, in return for a small donation to the NGS charity, which funds nursing and cancer charities. EASIEST COMPETITION EVER!
The last big part of the monthly cycle is to have the magazine delivered. Where we can we’ll deliver it door-to-door, but we also leave copies to be picked up from various shops and other outlets. For the door-to-door deliveries, when we’ve been short of distributors or are trying a new area, I’ve occasionally covered a route or two myself. Although it’s quite pleasant to be outside (except when (a) it's snowing, (b) there's a heatwave) it’s also

quite physical work, so I’m very appreciative of the effort our wonderful team put in for us. Nevertheless, it’s important to ensure you are getting the magazines by one method or another. So could I ask for your help in tracking this? We would like to see where the magazines are going by running a completely free-toenter competition where you could win £30. If you want to enter on behalf of a charity we’ll increase the payout to £50. For more information on how to enter see below.

Short Story Paws for Comfort By Jackie Brewster “Are you Ian, the bellboy?” An elegant lady in a tweed cape strode into the hotel ballroom, startling Ian, who’d been busy admiring his hair from every angle in the mirrored walls. Behind her another lady in an anorak, wrestling a nylon men’s suit carrier in her arms, struggled to keep up. Ian nodded warily. He’d already carried one old lady’s luggage to the second floor and that seemed like quite enough work for one day. “You’ll do perfectly,” she said, and turned to her companion. “Dolly, don’t you think he has the look of a young Liberace?” “Very handsome, Val,” the lady nodded emphatically. Ian instinctively smoothed his hair. “So that’s settled,” Val said. “You’ll do it.” “Do what?” Ian was alarmed. As a rule, he tried to do as little as possible. “We’re holding a fashion show in the hall and our model has let us down.” She smiled demurely. “I assume you have catwalk experience?” “A bit.” Ian’s gran had once entered him into a beautiful baby contest, so he knew that the world of fashion was just waiting to discover him. He frowned. “I’ll have to ask my manager.” “Don’t worry yourself about that,” Val said. “I’ve already cleared it with Mr Fulsome; he’s delighted with the arrangement.” Ian was surprised to hear this 6
because the air between him and Mr Fulsome had been frosty ever since Ian had been caught taking selfies in the honeymoon suite Jacuzzi. “What would I have to do?” Ian asked. “Imagine New York fashion week,” Val raised two manicured hands to set the scene, “and you’re the star of the show.” Ian’s eyes lit up.
In a few excited taps of his phone Ian alerted the world to his big catwalk debut.
“Where’s my manners?” she laughed. “Let me introduce our designer, Dolly Cramp.”
“Right, let’s get you into your outfit.” Val clapped her hands. “Dolly, hand over the suit.”
Dolly shuffled forward and awkwardly shook Ian’s hand, while trying not to lose control of the suit carrier.
“You want me to change here?” Ian asked; this was all happening very fast.
“You’re just perfect for my outfit.” She grinned as though unable to take her eyes off him. Ian had seen fashion designers in magazines but none of them looked like Dolly Cramp. He hoped the grubby anorak she was wearing wasn’t one of her designs. “The local TV station is here already,” Val added, “so you’ll get lots of exposure.” “What?” Ian suddenly felt excited. “Where?” Val pointed to the ballroom exit. “Just through those doors.” “Have I got time to let my friends know?” Ian pulled out his phone. Nothing was going to stop him announcing his big break in fashion. “Be my guest!” Val cried. “Get it out on social media, and everyone will see you on the teatime news.”
“We’ve seen it all before,” Dolly grinned, offering him the bag, “haven’t we Val?” “Let’s turn our backs anyway, Dolly?” Val said. “Give the lad his dignity.” Ian unzipped the bag, and a long brown garment of furry padded fabric came tumbling out. “What’s this?” He thought there must be a mistake. “It looks like a onesie?” “It’s the star of my Paws for Comfort range,” Dolly called over her shoulder. “Incredibly snuggly, and it makes the wearer look like a gerbil. Will you need a hand with the tail?” Ian held up the costume in horror and wondered whether he could make a run for it while their backs were turned. “And be quick,” Val added. “The cameras are rolling just outside.”

Newent Community School and Sixth Form Centre is a caring and supportive 11-18 mixed comprehensive serving Newent, surrounding villages and, because of excellent transport links, Gloucester City, the Forest of Dean and Herefordshire. We are a high achieving school at the very heart of our community. We continue to be a good school offering a high quality of education with recent observations recognising that our students are making strong progress in the majority of subjects. In addition, it was rightly observed that our students feel safe, and are safe, in school. This is achieved by the school’s culture of care and vigilance. Our fantastic report is a real vindication of our drive to develop confident, well informed and caring young adults who have self- belief and fully participate in their local, national and international communities; the school provides a wealth of additional opportunities for students to achieve these aims. There are many exciting things happening at the school including our close working partnership with the National Cyber Security Centre as a Cyber Schools Hub. This provides our students with the amazing opportunity to use Virtual Reality equipment, programme Raspberry Pi’s and attend dedicated Computing and IT Science events. We are also thrilled to announce that our fantastic facilities now include a new Sixth Form Centre completed just a few weeks ago. If you wish to consider attending Newent Community School there is still time to see us in action, take a tour around the school and meet Senior Leaders. Please contact our Reception on 01531 820550 to arrange a visit.

Auction Anecdote Smiths’ April sale featured a special section for stamps and postcards and while stamps leave me cold, I am rather interested in the collection of old postcards and always enjoy having a look through the albums although we employ a specialist to catalogue and value them. Postcards are actually rather in vogue at present and the key to value is understanding the different themes which collectors are looking for. People often like to collect postcards according to their own interests and so one finds enthusiasts looking for subjects ranging from dogs and cats to railway stations and old post offices. Of course, some of the most sought-after cards are those showing local history scenes and most people are very interested to see photographic postcards of their local area from ‘times gone by’. A group of five Hereford town centre postcards in the April sale depicted two charitable sponsored walks in 1909, a marathon race in 1908 and street scenes from an early election day. The five cards sold for £170, which is not a bad return for five little bits of cardboard when you think about it. Of course, it is the fact that most of these postcards would have been thrown away over the years which makes them so rare and desirable. Another interesting lot in the sale was a oneowner mixed album of postcards which included a Glastonbury 1909 carnival scene and a hatters shop front from Stroud. The album which sold for £210 also included my favourite card in the sale – a very cute looking Louis Wain cat smiling sweetly accompanied by the words ‘With warm Wishes for a Happy Christmas’. It is only after one looks closely at the card that one realises with a shock that the cat is actually pouring a kettle of boiling water into a bowl of goldfish! Smiths’ next sale on 11th May includes a special section of jewellery and silver while entries are invited for their June Antiques Sale which includes clocks and watches as well as the usual selection of antiques and collectables. Sweet Recipe Chocolate Fondant Puddings Don’t overcook these divine chocolate puds or the centres will set and you’ll lose the gooey molten middle. You can prepare them a couple of hours in advance and bake them just before serving.
Ingredients: • 175g unsalted butter, plus extra for greasing • 175g caster sugar • 175g good quality plain chocolate, broken into pieces • 3 large eggs • 50g plain flour • Cocoa powder and icing sugar, to dust • Whipped cream and strawberries, to serve
Serves 4 Ready in 45 minutes
TIP
If you don’t have ovenproof ramekin dishes, you can use small metal pudding basins or ovenproof teacups. 12
1. Preheat the oven to 190C/fan 170C/gas mark 5.
Lightly butter four 300ml capacity ramekin dishes (see Tip) and sprinkle with a little of the caster sugar.
2. Place the chocolate and butter in a heatproof
bowl set over a pan of simmering water and leave until melted. Remove from the heat and stir until smooth. Cool for 5 minutes.
3. In a large bowl whisk the eggs and remaining
caster sugar together for 5 minutes until very thick, pale and creamy, then whisk in the chocolate mixture. Sift over the flour and gently fold in using a metal spoon.
4. Divide the mixture between the four dishes. Place on a baking sheet and bake in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes until the puddings have risen and are just set on the outside – the tops should still wobble when pressed lightly. Run a knife around the edge of the puddings and turn out onto plates. Dust with cocoa powder and icing sugar and serve immediately with whipped cream and strawberries.

Striking Sunflowers by Pippa Greenwood
Sunflowers are one of the most stunning and impressive flowers you could have in your garden, and are easy to grow too. Sow them this month to achieve a fantastic flowery display in just a few months’ time. So which ones should you choose and how do you go about getting the best crop of flowers? There are fast-growing and potentially very tall varieties such as ‘Russian Giant’ and ‘Titan’, with the latter reaching a potential height of up to 360cm or 12ft and having heads of up to 60cm (2ft) in diameter! There are some delightful miniature or dwarf varieties. The F1 variety ‘Little Dorrit’ grows to about 60cm (2ft) and has rich yellow flowers with very dark centres. Another favourite is ‘Little Leo’ at just 45cm (18in), which makes lots of impact with golden yellow heads on multibranching stems. Nowadays there are many colours other than yellow readily available, such as ‘Black Magic’, which has maroon flowers and is multi-branching, reaching a height of about 180cm (6ft). Grow yourself a few for cutting too, and you’ll have a vase or more full of flowers that would cost a fortune in the shops. Many varieties are suitable, 14
including the orangey-brown ‘Velvet Queen’, ‘Black Velvet’ and the bi-coloured and pollenfree ‘Magic Roundabout’. For containers, ‘Pacino Colada’ is a compact variety growing to just 40cm (16in) and has 10cm (4in) wide golden-yellow flowers, making a wonderful plant for a sunny patio, sheltered balcony or in the flower beds. Children love a competition to grow the tallest plant and varieties like ‘Russian Giant’ and ‘Giant Single’ are perfect for smaller gardeners, and as they reach heights of about 180cm (6ft) will soon dwarf them! Sunflowers make a cheap and cheerful addition to a garden boundary, adding splashes of colour to a dreary fence line or helping to mask a garage or shed. You should get a good crop of blooms if you sow sunflowers between March and May, depending on the weather and where you live. You can sow them straight into the soil or into pots of compost. I like to use RootTrainers to encourage really well-developed and deep roots to develop, and make it easy to plant out the sunflowers with minimum root disturbance; see www.pippagreenwood. com/products/grow-great-crops
for more information. As their name suggests, sunflowers need plenty of sunshine to thrive. However, although many are tall, each plant does not actually take up much space at ground level. Slugs and snails love sunflowers so I always grow them in small individual pots and plant them out when they’re a few inches tall. This means they’re bigger and tougher and better able to resist attack. As an added precaution, put a ring of slug-deterring material around the base of each one – crushed shells, crushed eggshells, coco-shell or pine needles for instance. If you’re growing sunflowers on anything other than a protected site, it may be necessary to give the taller varieties some support in the form of a sturdy bamboo cane or slim stake, just in case the wind blows too strongly! Visit Pippa’s website www. pippagreenwood.com and you’ll find some great gardening things: ‘Grow Your Own with Pippa Greenwood’ (where you receive your chosen garden-ready vegetable plants in May accompanied by weekly advice and tips from Pippa) plus RootTrainers, Nemaslug, bio-controls, gardening tools, raised bed kits, Grower Frames, signed books and more!

A Mountain to Climb Amelia Larcombe is a first year student at Newent Comprehensive School and is climbing up Mount Snowdon in May in aid of MacMillan Cancer Support. Amelia’s grandma and step-brother both received support from the charity during their fights with the disease. Such was the effect on her from the loss of two important people in her life, Amelia decided she wanted to do something to make a difference and hopefully help others. Several members of her family, and friends of the family, have had battles with cancer and supporting the awareness and fundraising of the MacMillan Cancer charity is something Amelia is passionate about. Unfortunately, bereavement counselling isn’t available for children unless they have lost a direct sibling or parent, but Amelia has found that taking the
decision to do something positive has helped her to manage her emotions and grief. Amelia originally set her fundraising target at an ambitious £500. However, within days of making the JustGiving page, she had exceeded her target and at the time of writing has now raised over £700. The generosity of friends and family has brought her to tears and made her even more determined to do them proud. Amelia’s mum says: “We have booked a place to stay nearby for two nights in May. If the weather is bad on the first day and we get turned away, we will go back on day two. If we get turned away due to weather a second time we will try again in June. Amelia is absolutely committed to complete the challenge she has set herself and is already talking about what she might do next year. We are all very proud of her. I think it is incredible that someone so young can take something terrible and heartbreaking and turn it into something positive and empowering.” Show your support to Amelia in her challenging climb by donating at www. justgiving.com/fundraising/amelia-larcombe Page 17

The wishing well was constructed by Newent Rotarians in 2009 and has since helped raise almost £1,000. The most recent collection amounted to £85. The money is donated to various Rotary charities. The Club really appreciates the support of the garden centre and visitors. Perhaps on your next visit, you may like to support us by kindly throwing a few coins into the well – make a wish, and who knows, it may just come true! Life-saving Defibrillator Presentation at Rodway Golf Club In April, Kevin Dickins and Louise Cooper, Community Responder Officers from the NHS South Western Ambulance Service, gave a brilliant presentation about defibrillators and their importance in emergencies. Their detailed talk on what action to take was followed by a practical session, where Rotary members tested their cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) skills. This was a most valuable evening, and members are now better prepared for emergencies. If you wish to learn more, visit the Resuscitation Council website www.resus.org.uk. Outstanding young man from Gloucester wins Rotary award Dale Rawlins, aged 21, has recently been recognised with a Rotary Young Citizen Award and a ÂŁ500 cheque for his exceptional work helping young disabled people get into football either on the pitch, in the sports shop or as a coach. Dale set up a disability football team when he was just 14 and went on to open a social enterprise sports shop to create employment opportunities for players when he was 16. He has since succeeded in generating several first-time jobs, including many for young people with learning, mental or physical disabilities. He has also helped youngsters to achieve FA Level 1 qualifications, enabling them to coach others.
The number of sportsmen and women Dale has brought into the game is about 400. He now runs the largest pan-disability football club in the UK, with 13 adult and three children's sides. He has set up one of only five disabled ladies sides in the country and one deaf team with over 130 regular players. Dale has ambitions to scale up the enterprise by opening 18 further shops which will create 150 jobs over the next five years. He is giving people the confidence and skills to gain mainstream employment and enabling people to move from institutional to independent living.

THE MARKET HOUSE Newent Town Council’s Newsletter Police The Council has now started monthly meetings with the Police, which give both sides the opportunity to provide feedback positive and otherwise. A Doggy Problem The Mayor is currently working with Rob Carpenter, the Street Warden, to try and draw people’s attention to the problem of dog fouling in the town. It is hoped that talks with pupils at the Primary School and the poster competition recently held, will make dog walkers more aware of the dangers of not cleaning up after their pets. Speeding Traffic Several councillors are being trained in the use of a speed gun by the police as part of a campaign to reduce speeding in built-up areas. A Date for Your Diary Following the successful Newent Open Day last July, the Town Council is supporting another event this year to encourage more residents to find out what Newent has to offer. This will take place on Sat 14th July. For a fuller version of this newsletter please visit our website. FURTHER INFORMATION: Information about the Council, its activities, contact details for councillors, agendas and decisions can be found on the website at www.newenttowncouncil.org.uk. The clerk is available on 01531 820638 from Monday to Friday or email townclerk@ newenttowncouncil.gov.uk. Our Council Office address is: 1st Floor, Newent Community Centre, Ross Road, GL18 1BD. We are open to the public from Tuesday to Thursday, 9.30am – 12.30pm and 2 - 4pm.

Rabbits are notorious for being selective feeders (this means they will eat the nice bits and leave the bits that are actually beneficial to their health). Rabbits that are selective feeders have an increased risk of developing dental disease and misalignment of the cheek teeth.
