GLOS DIRECTORIES | LOCAL HISTORY

A Forgotten Racing Hero With the famous Cheltenham Gold Cup meeting on the horizon, I have taken a racing theme for this month’s article, choosing one of Cheltenham’s forgotten racing heroes, kept out of the limelight of history by his near contemporary, Fred Archer. George Stevens was born in Cheltenham in 1833, the son of one of the countless servants to the leisured classes who lived in the town. He was still a teenager when his potential to be a successful jockey was recognised by William Holman, one of Cheltenham’s famous trainers, who had his stables on Cleeve Common. There George was trained as a steeplechase jockey so successfully that he won his first major race, the Wolverhampton Grand George Stevens (Tim Curr)

GLOS DIRECTORIES | LOCAL HISTORY Annual, at the age of only eighteen. Then, just five years later, he came to wider attention by winning the Grand National at Aintree, riding Free Trader. This was the first of his five victories in the Grand National, a record which still stands today and which should have given the servant’s son from Cheltenham the status of a superstar. The fact that he never enjoyed the same fame as Fred Archer has much to do with the nature of horse racing at that time. Fred Archer was a successful flat race jockey, riding thoroughbreds; George Stevens won over the jumps. When the Grand National was first run in 1839 it was designed for heavy hunters and cavalry horses and so clearly lacked the prestige of flat racing. However, at the time when George started on his career, the nature of steeple chasing was changing; fences were being lowered and the emphasis was moving to riding ex-flat race horses. In 1863 the start of the National was put back over a quarter of a mile to give more of a chase. Therefore it was little surprise that George’s next two Grand National victories were on the back of ex-flat racers: Emblem in 1863 and then Emblematic in 1864, which was described in the press as ‘a rat’ and ‘too light and narrow-gutted’. The reward from the horses’ owner, Lord Coventry of Earl’s Croome, was enough for George to set himself up with his own small stable at the top of Stockwell Lane on Cleeve Hill.

William Holman's stables on Cleeve Common

cracked his head on the ground and never regained consciousness. It was a sadly ironical ending for a jockey who had ridden the Grand National fifteen times and won five times, with never a fall. - by David Aldred

Yet not long after this last victory, George left Lord Coventry, the earl considering the jockey had lost his nerve, and he moved to his wife’s uncle’s training stables at Richard’s Castle near Ludlow. It was here he trained The Colonel, ‘of good girth with powerful shoulders and quarters’, to such an effect that he rode him to victory in the Grand National in both 1869 and 1870, although only by a neck in the latter year. In 1871 he could only manage fourth place and the horse was retired to stud in Germany. George’s last victory came shortly after this when he won at Cheltenham’s Grand Annual meeting in April, riding his own mare, Miss Dodson. And that’s the end of the story. Seven weeks later, on 1 June 1871, George had reached the Rising Sun Hotel on his way home from Cheltenham, when his cob, The Clown, for some reason bolted back down the hill, throwing George off in Southam where he

GLOS DIRECTORIES | HEALTH & LIFESTYLE We all want to turn back the clock when it comes to our ageing skin, but finding ways to lessen the appearance of embedded lines and wrinkles can be hard. So, it’s important to take immediate action to look after your skin through a dedicated daily routine - that will prove to be effective, whatever your age.

Fresh Faced Whatever Your Age Prevention is better than cure, and thanks to the extensive range of products on the market designed specifically to delay and fight the signs of ageing - holding back the years might not be as hard as you’d think. It’s not just about products though, living a healthy lifestyle, eating a diet that’s rich in vitamins A, C and E (found in brightly coloured fruit and vegetables) and omega-3 fatty acids (from fish, nuts and seeds) will boost skin from the inside out. And what’s more, remember to keep smiling - it’s an instant face-lift. After all, as fashion designer Coco Chanel famously said, ‘Nature gives you the face you have at twenty; it is up to you to merit the face you have at fifty.’

In your late 20s and early 30s…

It might seem early, but it pays to establish a skin care regime that will aid in the prevention of visible ageing signs in later life. Remember to protect the skin from the sun’s damaging UV rays, by using a specially formulated day cream that is guaranteed to safeguard your skin. Always cleanse, tone, exfoliate (image 1) and moisturise (image 2) to eradicate dull patches and ensure a healthy, youthful glow.

In your late 30s and early 40s….

Once you hit your mid thirties you may start to notice the earliest signs of ageing - such as laughter lines, frown lines or wrinkles around the lips. Use an eye cream (image 3) daily to treat and postpone the onset of fine lines around sensitive areas and select a richly moisturising night cream to keep both face and neck thoroughly nourished. It’s essential at this time in your life to commit to paying real attention to looking after your skin, so as to ensure it looks younger and more youthful in years to come.

In your late 40s and early 50s…..

Work on any established wrinkles with targeted products for your problem areas (image 4). Active anti-ageing ingredients are a must at this age, so look for products that contain high levels of antioxidants, retinol or peptides to protect your skin from free-radical damage. Brightening ingredients help to boost radiance and will improve the appearance of mature skin. Try both serums and creams to establish which works best for you.

GLOS DIRECTORIES | HEALTH & LIFESTYLE In your late 50s and early 60s…

A dull complexion is common in your 60s. Owing to a build-up of dead skin cells due to the skin’s inability to renew itself, the surface can be left looking uneven and lifeless. So regular exfoliation is essential (image 5). Not only will this reveal fresher looking skin, but you will also be creating the ideal base on which to apply your anti-ageing products, ensuring they are absorbed deep into the layers of your dermis. Though be careful not to scrub or use an exfoliant that is too harsh, as this can damage thinning skin already suffering from a reduction in collagen and elastin fibres.

In your late 60s, early 70s and beyond…

As skin is much more demanding at this time of life, it can be hard to manage dry skin and the more established signs of ageing. It is essential to build on the routine you have established throughout previous years by continuing to spend time putting back what ageing takes out.

1. Vitamin E Cream Exfoliator £8 The Body Shop. 2. Vitamin E SPF 15 Moisture Lotion £10 The Body Shop. 3. Repairwear Intensive Eye Cream £26 Clinique. 4. Perfectionist CP+ Wrinkle Lifting Serum from £46 Estee Lauder. 5. Exfoliators £26.50 each Estee Lauder. 6. Resilience Lift Firming/Sculpting Face and Neck Creme £60 and Instant Action Lift Treatment £45 Estee Lauder.

Use intensive and targeted anti-ageing day creams and try face oils at night that will penetrate deep into the skin to provide much needed hydration (image 6).

Just before serving, brush the salmon skewers with the warmed honey and grill for a further minutes. Divide the sesame noodles between four serving bowls and top with the salmon skewers.

TIP

To save time buy a small jar of ready prepared ginger puree rather than buying fresh root ginger – once opened it will keep in the fridge for a few weeks and is great for adding an Oriental flavour to rice and stir fries.

MOTORING

Top 5 Cars of the Tokyo Show This year’s Tokyo Motor Show was dominated by green technologies and wacky concepts – but among the madness there were some important model launches. The show isn’t one of the biggest. Spread over four halls you can get around it easily in a day – unlike the blister-inducing mass of motors that is Europe’s biggest show in Frankfurt, Germany. However, as the Japanese makers’ home event, it is absolutely packed with innovation. I spent two days scouring the halls and soaking up the culture, but eventually these five emerged as my picks of the show. Toyota GT 86 It’s about time Toyota got interesting again and the GT 86 certainly floats our boat. Rumoured to cost around £28,000 when it goes on sale in the UK, the rear-wheel drive car features a 2.0-litre 197bhp unit and will hit 60mph in seven seconds. It certainly looked good on the stand and was a welcome break from the green concepts doing the rounds everywhere else. Subaru BRZ Subaru has been having a hard time of it in the UK of late, so the BRZ comes as a much-needed breath of fresh air. Jointly developed with Toyota, it’s the sister car to the GT 86, and in the company’s famous corporate blue it looked fantastic. The BRZ has slightly different body panels and interior to the Toyota. Just don’t mention the new, and very bland, Impreza also on display on the stand... Nissan Juke Nismo The Juke has been crying out for a real sporty model and it looks like Nissan may finally answer our prayers thanks to its tuning arm Nismo. This is the first car that’s been given the Nismo treatment and although currently billed as a “concept” it’s highly likely we’ll see it on our roads soon. Exterior and interior tweaks will be matched with a breathed-on powerplant. Mercedes F 125! We’re not big fans of concepts that don’t mean anything, but Mercedes was quick to point out the F 125! showcases the future design direction of the next S-Class. The concept featured fuel cell technology which would give it a range of 1,000km, a lightweight body construction, gullwing doors and a cloud-based infotainment system. But ignore all that, it’s the looks that are most likely to shape future luxury barges from the firm. Hino eZ Cargo Tucked away in the corner of the truck section of the show was this fantastic delivery van. Not only does it look superb, but it showcases EV technology and a clean uncluttered design that would make Apple proud. A spokesman for Hino told us it has a range of 50kms, can charge in six hours and hit 70kph. Trials will take place next year before a decision is made whether to put it into production. We just hope the looks are carried over – it certainly beats a boring Transit. by James Baggott, editor of Car Dealer Magazine (CarDealerMag.co.uk)

Insuring Your Home Heating System, Hot Water and Electrics

We speak to Scott Johnston, MD of Johnston Scotia about two offers they have for you to improve your heating this spring. So far this winter has been relatively mild, which has been a blessing when you consider the ever increasing cost of household heating bills, boiler repairs and servicing. Do you sometimes get frustrated with your heating and hot water system? Would you like to guard against a boiler breakdown, or replace your old and inefficient heating system?

SHOULD I CONSIDER REPLACING MY OLD GAS BOILER? Boiler technology has advanced greatly in recent years and now boilers are able to deliver high levels of energy efficiency and reduce your bills whilst delivering more hot water and better heating.

SO HOW DO I TAKE UP THIS DEAL? Simply contact us for a free, no obligation quote to replace any gas boiler of any age and when you accept our quote you will benefit from a saving of £400 off the cost of the installation.

THERE WAS THE BOILER SCRAPPAGE SCHEME ADVERTISED A COUPLE OF YEARS AGO, ARE THERE STILL DEALS LIKE THAT? The government sponsored scheme was only open to certain types of boiler and although successful came to a swift end because of limited funding. We have approached two boiler manufacturers to join us to set up an exclusive scheme offering a £400 Boiler Scrappage Discount with no restrictions when customers accept our quote for a new boiler until the end of this summer. SO W HAT CHOICE OF BOILERS ARE IN THIS SCHEME? We have two excellent brands that we have teamed up with to bring customers this offer. They are Viessmann, which is a German boiler manufacturer and Intergas from the Netherlands. Both of these companies have been making high efficiency condensing boilers in Europe since the 1980’s, both offer a 3 year product warranty which is extended to 5 years when the boiler is installed by Johnston Scotia. Both guarantee the heat exchanger of their boiler for 10 years. These boilers are rated over 90% for efficiency and designed to lower your heating bills.

Page 24

Some people see the annual service of a boiler as an unnecessary expense, but by skipping this important preventative maintenance the efficiency and life expectancy of your boiler can be greatly reduced and your fuel bills can rise. SCOTIACARE HOMEPLAN BOILER COVER The ScotiaCare HomePlan package has been designed with local customers in mind, it covers the boiler, heating & hot water system, radiators, external controls, pipe work, internal plumbing and home electrics all for only £7.99* per month for the first 12 months. The cost does rise to £16.99 for the next 2 years, but this is still excellent value for money when compared to other offers. The plan covers you for:

W HY SHOULD I TAKE OUT A SERVICE CONTRACT LIKE SCOTIACARE HOMEPLAN? We all rely on our heating and hot water to work on demand all year round; we tend to take it for granted. It always seems that problems occur just when you need your heating the most! The ScotiaCare HomePlan is designed to give you peace of mind and make sure your household, hot water, heating and electrics are maintained to give you that peace of mind. Without a contract like this you can soon see the cost of even a simple fault leading to an expensive bill for parts and labour and there is never a good time for one of those.

Growing Peppers Growing your own peppers is not much more involved than growing tomatoes, so why not give it a try? Pepper plants can be unbelievably pretty too, with fruits in a range of shapes and colour, generally on compact plants and preceded by small and very pretty white flowers. This is a plant with great ornamental as well as edible potential. Both chilli and sweet - or bell - peppers can be grown in a greenhouse border, in a sunny spot in the garden in warmer parts of the country, or on a sunny, sheltered spot on the patio. The heavier, earlier crop will come if you grow the plants in a greenhouse or conservatory, but it is well worth growing them outside too. Sweet peppers, especially the red ones, are very high in vitamin A and both red and green peppers are also very high in vitamin C. Chilli peppers also have a good supply of vitamins C and A and in addition, contain both beta-carotene and something called capsaicin which is believed to have a useful effect on blood cholesterol levels. The seeds are readily obtainable from many catalogues or garden centres but make sure you take into account the level of heat that each type delivers. Most seed packets and catalogues do make it very clear. Sow the seeds between now and early April. I use a multi-purpose or a seed compost, but for good germination you will need to provide a bit of extra warmth, ideally from a heated propagator positioned in a spot where it receives plenty of natural light. If you don’t have the time or facilities to raise your own from seed, you can always buy a few plants in a garden centre or send off for them. We offer two tasty varieties as part of my ‘Grow Your Own with Pippa Greenwood’ system (see www.pippagreenwood.com for details). Keep the plants a tiny bit drier than you

would a tomato plant and feed regularly with a high-potash liquid feed (most readily available as a ‘tomato food’). This helps to keep the plants growing strongly and the potash will encourage plenty of flowers and so fruits to form. If you are going for plants in pots, choose a planter that has good drainage and is 30cm (12in) or more in diameter, adding broken pots for extra drainage. Once there is no danger of late frosts you can put them outside in a sheltered, sunny spot. If you’re after the hottest possible heat from your chilli peppers, then you’ll find this comes from fruits that are totally ripe and from peppers that are grown in warmer conditions. If you are growing sweet peppers in patio pots then you are likely to find that there are still some unripened fruits on the plants when temperatures start to fall at the end of summer and well into autumn. To increase the chances of these ripening and increasing to full size, move the pots to a warmer spot or, if possible, to a porch, conservatory or greenhouse where they’ll get extra warmth and also plenty of natural light. If you want chillies that look particularly good on the patio there are plenty to choose from. ‘Black Pearl’ is a hot chilli pepper with a distinct blackish tinge to the mature leaves and fruits that are black early on and mature darkest red. For classic chillis with bright red, finger shaped fruits try ‘Thai Dragon’. Visit www.pippagreenwood.com to make veg growing easy. You’ll receive garden ready veg plants PLUS every week Pippa emails you hints, tips and advice about your chosen veg. From just £39 for up to 66 garden-ready plants, 6 packets of seed and the weekly emails. by Pippa Greenwood

Open Sesame Why have several small, dark rooms when you can simply knock down some walls and live in a gorgeous, airy, bright and huge space? But there are eight key issues you should bear in mind when decorating your open-plan home, says Katherine Sorrell 1. Creating a focal point While traditional rooms often work around a fireplace or TV, larger, multi-purpose rooms can lack visual focus. By introducing colour, pattern and/or texture on one wall – perhaps above a sofa or behind a dining table – you’ll add character, interest and even drama. The easiest solution is to use a strong paint colour or to hang a large painting, photograph or print, while boldly patterned wallpaper also works well.

2. Using colour Pale colours are generally considered best to emphasise the airiness of large open spaces. But should you go for one shade all over, or choose different colours for different areas? Using the same colour throughout gives an unbroken look and emphasises space, but if one end of the room is to function separately from the other – a living and dining space, a living and work space – you can zone these areas by varying their colour. A tonal scheme, with colour going from light to darker from one end to the other, can be particularly effective.

3. Planning your lighting Use lighting to delineate different areas within your open-plan space, and illuminate different parts to suit

Page 28

A comfortable seating area can be based around a rug and finished with oversized lighting. The Barletta collection, Marks & Spencer, 0845 302 1234; marksandspencer.com.

your needs, whether it’s a living area or working space, a kitchen or a dining area. Layer in different types of light in different areas, using a mixture of concealed lighting (in ceilings or under shelves, for example) and eye-catching, over-sized fixtures that suit the extra-large space.

4. Choosing a floor Choosing flooring for a multi-purpose space such as an open-plan cooking/dining/living area can be tricky, as the kitchen area needs to be able to cope with splashes and spills, while you’ll want the sitting area to feel cosy and comfortable. You have two choices: either run the same flooring throughout for a sleek, flowing look, or choose a variety of types of flooring which will differentiate between areas. If you go for the former option, consider stone or wood, both of which can be softened with rugs where necessary, or consider high quality vinyl, which is spill-proof and forgiving underfoot.

5. Separating spaces Not all open-plan spaces need to be entirely open all of the time, so for truly flexible living it’s advisable to include some sort of flexible division. In a period property, panelled doors that can be folded back against the walls when not in use are perfect; in a more modern house a moveable screen, or perhaps ceiling-mounted panels (on a track) that can be pulled to one side when desired, would be enormously useful.

6. Linking spaces Open-plan kitchen/living areas are ideal for entertaining, but how do you successfully blend the spaces seamlessly? One solution is to continue the style of your kitchen units for storage used in nearby areas, choosing a design that looks as good for a TV stand, say, as for a cutlery drawer. Versatility is key and you should consider not just colour

but also texture, and even handles – long, slender handles tend to look better in modern living spaces than dumpy round ones, for example.

7. Solutions for storage Knocking two rooms together gives you a gorgeous open area – but, because you’ve lost wall space for cupboards and shelves, much less room to hide your clutter. One solution is to use tall, open shelving that doubles as a room divider as well as somewhere to display your stuff, while if you have a flat-screen TV, mount it on a media wall with storage for DVDs concealed behind it. In fact, make the most of every tiny corner, building storage into sloping ceilings, around windows or in any alcove you can find.

8. Buying and arranging furniture Conventional furniture won’t necessarily have the right proportions to work well in open-plan living areas, so you may have to look for larger-thanaverage pieces, and bear in mind that they have to look good from all angles, not just the front. Avoid the temptation to place all the furniture around the edges of the room (it will look like a nursing home); instead, create cosy sitting areas within the main space – with two sofas facing each other, with tables and lamps behind, perhaps, or else use modular furniture which creates sociable corners.

Sliding panels are designed to partition different areas. Leave the system closed to disguise clutter or pull it back to revert to openplan bliss. Prices start from £77.84, The Fabric Box, 0844 8118280; thefabricbox.co.uk. by Katherine Sorrell

Working from home Dad’s Taxis Some time ago I was ruminating in a slightly melancholy vein about what life would be like as empty-nesters. Would my wife and I be a bit sad? A bit lonely? Would we miss our little chickadees? Well, no we won’t. Because they’re NOT GOING! We always knew we’d be stuck with the boy, who has started tech. But what I didn’t realise (admittedly, because I never listen) is that he’s only going three days a week. Further, he’s studying music technology, so his homework seems to be very loud indeed. When I was his age I did try my best to make as much noise with my music as he manages with his, but since I was stuck with the discarded family Dansette while he seems to have the equivalent of The Who’s PA system I failed to make quite as much impact as he does. Also, the music of my teens was slightly more melodic than the thumpy stuff his generation favours – rock’n’roll may not be noise pollution, but dubstep most certainly is. Then we learnt that the girl isn’t going either. She was one grade off her first choice, but was offered a place for next year – yeah, that’s right, when the fees go up – and rather than settle for her second choice she decided to take a gap year. So, is she off backpacking around the Far East? No. She’s taking her gap year at home, that’s what. At least she’s not as noisy as he is, but we’re still lumbered with the pair of them. Well, I suppose it’s quite nice really, having them around the place. I’m kind of used to them,

in a way, and there’ll certainly be a big them-shaped hole in our lives when they finally do go. In the meantime, though, Dad’s Taxis is not going into liquidation, and the home laundry service remains as gargantuan an enterprise as ever. In fact Dad’s Taxis seems to be expanding. The boy is supposed to take a ludicrously early bus in the morning for his hour-and-a-half journey into college, which seems a ridiculous amount of time for a 20-mile trip. Not surprisingly, he doesn’t always make it, and as he has to be there by 9am, that means the dog is still waiting to be walked by the time the taxi-driver arrives back. So that’s an hour off the working day for starters. In her case, it’s job interviews. Although the town I live in has some 30,000 souls it doesn’t seem to have anything in the way of facilities, not even a job centre. Nor does it have any buses, or at least none of them seem to go where we want them to, and the timetables appear to have been devised by someone who thinks that while everybody wants to flee the town, nobody wants to come back. Or not on the same day that they left, at any rate. So it’s Dad’s Taxis to the rescue, and more hours lopped off the working day. When my generation came to this point in our lives, we were simply taught to drive and bought an old banger (a pale-blue Ford Anglia, in my case). But things have changed, and not for the better. We took one look at how much it would cost to insure them to learn to drive with us and turned deathly pale. And that’s before paying for driving lessons (that’s the drawback with twins – double bubble!) and then insuring them once they pass. You’d have to be a millionaire. And we’re not. So Dad’s Taxis it is. by Ted Bruning

A Proverbial Life... Waste not, want not I’ve developed a rather odd passion for glass. Not just any old glass, but those items we normally toss into the recycling bin without a second glance...glass jars. Actually, it’s not just glass jars that have taken my fancy but also yogurt pots. So far I’m managing to resist the urge to collect the wonderfully perfect plastic pots - but my glass jar fetish is getting out of control. I used to casually put all such items into the recycling bin, where they would eventually be re-incarnated by the local facility. However, I now seem to have decided that I can cut out the middle man and perform an alternative recycling role myself. I have discovered a whole new world of beauty in the simple glass jar. I covet glass jars and will not assign them to a cruel crushing and grinding. Instead I soak off labels, clean with hot soapy water, rinse and leave to dry on the window sill. Once they have passed the ‘sniff test’ (quick sniff to ensure there is no lingering hint of previous contents), they join their fellow jars in one of several boxes stored in the garage. I’ve been collecting now for nearly six months and I’ve got lots of lovely clean jars. Lots and lots and lots. I’m not the original purchaser of all of these jars; many of them have been donated to me by family and friends. All it took was a simple request to ‘save all your jars for me’, and I’ve been inundated. My mother in particular took this request to heart. She is my most enthusiastic glass jar collector, and has dragooned many of her friends into saving their jars for me. At least once a month I get summoned to

‘Mummy Towers’ to pick up the latest batch of jars. There’s always at least 30 waiting for me, stacked in a cardboard box, washed and looking suspiciously like they’ve been polished to a high gleam. I’m always delighted to receive them and she’s always delighted to give them to me. However, the oddest thing is that no-one ever questions why I want so many jars. An initial explanation that I was going to make jam has continued to ensure a never ending supply of lovely jars. The jam making season has long gone. Despite my best intentions I didn’t make any jam. Neither have I made any chutneys, relishes or pickles but I will...next year. If I don’t make jam I will find some other use for them. I may take up glass painting and turn them into psychedelic vases for sale on eBay; or pop nightlights into them and use them in the garden, or fill them with sweets for the tombola at the local W.I. Or I could turn them into pen holders, paint pots or mini incubators for seedlings...the possibilities are endless. Indeed my husband has suggested that they would be a particularly useful place to keep the marbles he thinks I’ve lost. I shall ignore him. by A. O’Brien

Veterinary advice

With Vet Brad Cooper of Folly Gardens Clinic

Fleas! At our clinic Bishops Cleeve we seem to be seeing pets coming in with a significant number of fleas, frequently with frustrated owners who feel they are banging their head against a wall trying to control the problem and nothing seems to work. When we ask what flea control they are using it isn’t unusual for owner to be purchasing the flea control from either pet shops, supermarkets or from the increasing number of online “veterinary” pharmacies. My editorial really isn’t to criticise other suppliers of flea treatment, however I believe that owners are sometimes, in my mind, throwing good money after bad thinking that they are purchasing veterinary products to treat their pet. The inferior treatments often don’t work effectively. The result is higher numbers of pets presenting at the clinic with skin conditions largely as a result of flea allergy which causes distress to the pet. One could argue it is also a waste of money. The flea, as a species, is rather clever. Between you and me I rather admire them. Each day a female flea can lay around 120 eggs which hatch producing more fleas so that very quickly a significant flea population can build up within a house which can cause real problems for cats and dogs. Trying to control a flea problem by only treating the pet simply won’t work as all the fleas in the house will have to hop onto the animal for it to even begin to be effective. During that time all the 1000’s of fleas in the home are happily laying 100’s of eggs in the home each day. As you can hopefully see, flea products that are applied to the pets which only kill the fleas are not addressing the burden within the house which is the major issue. The pet shop and supermarket purchased household flea sprays are not the same as veterinary purchased products (although they would be quite happily tell you that they are). Many owners therefore are simply not aware that, for example, the product “Frontline Spot-On” was improved Page 38

6 years ago to a product called, “Frontline Combo”. The enormous difference between the two very similar sound names, is that the veterinary supplied “Frontline Combo” contains an extra medication called (S)-Methoprene. (S)-Methoprene works to prevent flea eggs from hatching properly which prevents a build up of fleas developing in the home. The result is that it is massively more effective at treating fleas than the now “old fashioned” pet shop and supermarket purchased “Frontline Spot On”. At Folly Gardens our team have a wealth of experience and our vets and nurses can tailor a flea treatment regime to suit the pet with the use of effective, veterinary (Prescription Only Medications). We recommend the most appropriate products available and have the passion and knowledge to provide the best advice for the individual pet AND your pocket.

Wishing you and your pet well. Brad Cooper MRCVS
