From the Editor Hello Reader, Once again the crowds flocked to Tewkesbury for the Medieval Festival last month. It was an unmissable event with so much happening during the two days. I’m sure that if you went along, you will join me in congratulating everyone who helped to stage the event and everyone who attended it too.

This event is a real credit to Tewkesbury!

Schools are out and it’s holidays! So if you're looking for a great day out this month, have a look at our events pages towards the back of this magazine. The ‘Classic Vehicle Festival on 23rd August is for all the family with over 100 stands, entertainment, BBQ and of course cars and bikes. Proceeds go to Rotary charities.

The Millionaire Maker The media have called Richard Denny the millionaire maker. For over 30 years he has helped thousands of people into financial wealth, and others into greater achievement and happiness. His lectures, books, videos, DVD’s and CD’s are bought around the world and he lives right here in the Cotswolds.

Happiness Guaranteed Research has identified that war torn and African nations are the unhappiest in the world, not surprising really. The happiest nations are led by Switzerland followed by Iceland, Denmark and Norway. Britain is apparently 21st of the 150 nations researched.

People’s own evaluations of their lives in determining what it means to be happy considered factors such as wealth, health, life expectancy and their perceptions of corruption, social support and freedom to make life decisions. I find this really very sad because many of those factors are not in the control of the individual, so they believe. It’s almost as though their happiness is utterly dependent upon other people and circumstances over which they have little influence. Increasingly happiness is considered a proper measure of social progress. Yes I can understand this may be a measurement tool for politicians, particularly in a nanny state. I can assure you my happiness will never be in the hands of or controlled by politicians, the weather or the newspapers, ‘nor will it be in the hands of the council or parish council. My happiness is in my hands and so it is for you. So here are three ways for guaranteed happiness and we in this country have no excuse for not applying these principles in our own lives.

1. Always have something to look forward to doing, owning or experiencing. Our brain

functions so much better when we have something to look forward to and this can be from simple things in life, meeting an old friend, going for a walk or perhaps the acquisition of some new clothes, car, holiday...whatever.

2. Happiness comes from sharing, we all know the expression ‘a joy that is shared is a joy doubled and a worry that is shared is a worry halved’. I travel a great deal on my own and do eat in some magnificent restaurants, the meal is never great, but sitting with my wife having fish and chips can be a really happy experience. Many people when elderly lose a loved one but gain happiness sharing their life with a cat or a dog. We need to understand that for the vast majority of the human race happiness does come from sharing.

3. It is impossible not to be happy when you make someone else happy. Very sadly in the world that we live in people get married and then believe it is the role of their husband/wife to make them happy and for many they soon discover it doesn’t work like that. If ever you are feeling low or down or unhappy, find somebody for who you can bring a little joy into their lives, be it a phone call, a visit or even an act of kindness.

Three easy little tips all guaranteed to bring happiness into our lives, and your life is in your control. It is up to you to decide whether to be happy or unhappy.

Tewkesbury Talk ‘Hot July brings cooling showers, Apricots and gillyflowers.’

- Sara Coleridge, Pretty Lessons in Verse July certainly has been warm, but at least we saw plenty of sunshine and very little rain on St Swithin’s Day (July 15th) as it is said that if it rains on that day it will rain for 40 days and 40 nights following. Mike and I even managed a trip to the beach one Sunday, but most of the month there was far too much going on in town for us to want to venture far. The end of June saw the Food and Drink Festival, the Model Steam Rally and the march through the town for Armed Forces Day. I have to thank local photographer Jack Boskett, of Jack Boskett Photography, for use of some

of his pictures of these events.

Many of you will know Jack, he is always happy to help with local initiatives and his fame is spreading. He was the only photographer permitted to be in attendance when HRH Princess Royal opened a new building at the YMCA in Cheltenham early in July. He said ‘I felt very privileged to be there.’

One of the organisers, and volunteers, Shelby Powell said ‘The project was completed by a number of volunteers, Town Council councillors and Tewkesbury in Bloom committee members. The bridge is the responsibility of the County Council who were not in a position to paint it this year as it would involve the expense of hiring contractors and possibly scaffolding plus a temporary closure of the bridge estimated at around £100,000. The whole project has been completed by volunteers in around 10 days for under £500! The funding has been made available from the Town Council, the County Council and local business like Tewkesbury Cards & Gifts. Paint (around 20 tins) was sourced from the Handyman Centre who have the expertise to mix it to the correct colour. Now it is complete, Tewkesbury in Bloom volunteers will hang floral displays from both sides of the bridge, sponsored by Alan Grimmet of Firmfix. The bridge is a popular access route to The Ham, an ancient water meadow and designated SSSI (Site of Special Scientific Interest), and the project has received national recognition by the RHS as an outstanding community project.’

Roses Theatre is now well underway to convert the site to a new arts centre. They have raised £801,000 towards the development costs and need just £19,000 to complete the works. One way to put your name to the project is the Buy a Brick scheme, where for £75 you will have your name permanently displayed on a plaque in the new atrium.

It is a good job Britain in Bloom is judged at the beginning of the month as the Anglo Saxons called August Weod Monath which means weed month, because it is the month of the year when the weeds grow fastest! Let’s hope they can be kept at bay for the Mayor’s Garden Tea Party, on Saturday 22nd August, in the Town Hall Gardens, 2pm till 5pm, in aid of Tewkesbury Food Bank.

There will be tea, cake, light refreshments, various stalls and a raffle – free entry, and everyone welcome. For more information contact the office on 01684 294639. Before the Mayor’s Tea Party there is the Tewkesbury Farmers & Craft Market to look forward to. Held at the Abbey Lawns Car Park, Gander Lane on 8th August, it has a great mix of local produce from farmers, growers and local food producers plus a wonderful collection of local arts and crafts.

It runs from 9am to 1.30pm and is on the second Saturday of every month.

Later on in the month we have the Tewkesbury Rotary Club Classic Vehicle Festival & Craft Market on 23rd August, 11am – 5pm,

at Tewkesbury School. This should prove to be a great day out for all the family - tea, cakes, BBQ, bar, entertainments plus 100 trade and retail stands. Over 400 cars and bikes attended the Classic Vehicle Festival last year and with plenty of free parking on site for all visitors it should again prove successful. All proceeds go to Rotary charities.

You also needn’t miss out on your music this month as on 29th August there is an evening of live music featuring lots of local bands at The Watson Hall. The funds are in aid of Tewkesbury C of E Primary School PTFA, and tickets are £5 each. We have them available in the shop and you can also purchase them at ELL Hair Studio, The Nutrition Centre and Gira Capelli - it is a great line up and will be a fantastic evening.

Mike and I occasionally manage to get away early in the evenings and when we do we try to take the opportunity to eat out, we had a lovely meal at The Boathouse recently, sitting outside on the patio area, watching the ducks. So peaceful, now if only we could manage that more often! Home & Interiors Victorian Style

It may not be the height of fashion, but there is much to be said for Victorian style, which is confident, distinctive and eminently comfortable, says Katherine Sorrell From society to science, politics to industry, the Victorian era was a time of enormous transformation. The middle classes expanded rapidly, and their homes became the perfect vehicles with which to show off both their newly acquired wealth and their cultural savvy.

The result? An interior style that was exuberant, eclectic and often over the top.

The high Victorian style was a riot of revivalism, and different periods were mixed with abandon. The main ‘Battle of the Styles’, however, was between ‘Greek’, (in other words, all types of classical architecture and decoration), and ‘Gothic’ (more or less any style reminiscent of Olde Englande).

The main ingredients for Victorian living were not so far from where we are today, give or take a tweak in colour and Page 12

pattern. Tiled hallways and polished, dark wood floors with a central rug featuring large, bold patterns set the scene, while patterned wallpaper was de rigueur. Wooden furniture was dark, solid and often very large, but we would recognise much of it, from dressers and dining tables to sideboards and writing desks.

Upholstered seating was the major development from the preceding Georgian era. Coil springing had been invented in the 1820s, and Victorian sofas and chairs featured deep buttons and comfortable, curving shapes. Metal bedsteads were introduced to Britons at the Great Exhibition of 1851 – and have changed little in style ever since.

As far as colour choices went, the Victorians loved anything rich, deep and vivid.

These hues worked well with the dark brown furniture that predominated, but are best used judiciously today.

That said, they can be most attractive in the right place: deep shades, such as crimson, claret, bottle green, sharp yellow, purple, mahogany, terracotta and Prussian blue, were preferred for sitting rooms, dining rooms and studies; paler and fresher hues were considered to be more suitable for bedrooms.

Lighting has, of course, altered a great deal in the last 150

years or so. When Victoria came to the throne, oil and candle lamps were the only form of lighting in most homes, but during her reign first gas lighting was developed and then, at the very end of the 19th century, early electricity. There were a great many elaborate and ornamental styles of lamp, including swan-necked brass wall lights, flower-shaped glass shades and china lamps covered with floral sprigs.

The Victorian middle-class kitchen, used only by servants, was a very plain room, equipped with freestanding tables, with the sink in an adjacent scullery. And the bathroom only came into being as a separate room in the 1870s. Along with indoor bathrooms came distinctive sanitaryware – large, often colourfully decorated basins, and enamelled roll-top baths on ball and claw or scroll feet, much of which can be found in reproduction form for those with spacious enough rooms.

Because Victorians considered bare rooms to be in poor taste, their houses were filled knick knacks, objets d’art and collections, some of which are right on-trend today? Other Victorian accessories have not stood the test of time quite so well, including black and white miniature portraits and toby jugs. Nor has a helpful kitchen accessory, employed for anyone unlucky enough to suffer from cockroaches – a hedgehog kept in a box.

Tropical Paradise

by Pippa Greenwood As the summer’s end is not too far away, many of us will be wishing for that exotic holiday we never quite had.

But you can recreate that Typically Tropical Feel in your own garden instead. The temperatures may not be quite what they might be on a real exotic holiday, but it’ll certainly help to make your garden feel warmer and more appealing, and you can be sure that it’ll last a lot longer than the classic two week long trip.

are great and fast growing too. For very bold, colourfully striped foliage and screaming orange flowers try Canna ‘Tropicana’, or for a larger than life effect try the banana Ensetes ventricosum ‘Maurelii’ which grows very fast and has wonderfully rich purple-green leaves.

A tropical oasis might be particularly well suited to an urban garden, where temperatures are often warmer and conditions more sheltered and protected, but even if your garden gets its fair share of frosts you can still make an impact using a mixture of tender and hardy plants all of which have that exotic feel to them. Plant closely or fill ‘gaps’ with temporary plantings of the less hardy tropical look plants and you will create that dense, lush looks which spells tropical paradise.

If you want more than just foliage, the bulbous Eucomis bicolour has out-of-this world greenish yellow flowerheads which give it the common name of ‘pineapple plant’. Another favourite of mine is the Angel’s trumpet. These gorgeous looking plants may be very poisonous but the flowers of Brugmansia (previously known as Datura) as angel’s trumpet is also known, take some beating – choose white, yellow or cream and enjoy their perfume and elegant good looks. Although not hardy if you grow it in a pot it can be kept in the garden during all but the worst weather and then brought out again once it has started to warm up the following spring.

Lush, large leaves will always help to create a rainforest or exotic atmosphere and you could even grow a miniature banana called Musa ‘Basjoo’, which shows a good degree of hardiness. Indian shot plants, also known as the cannas

the pretty Cobea scandens commonly known as the cup and saucer plant.

Then add to the ‘action’ using a few dramatic features – perhaps a Trachycarpus fortunei palm in open ground or a pot, or in the form of a sculpture or statue. If you go to the garden centre, many statues and garden ornaments are much more affordable than you might think. Partially hidden with some lush foliage they help to add to the jungle-like atmosphere.

There are plenty of tropicaleffect plants to choose from including: tree ferns, phoenix palms, yuccas, cordylines, Rodgersia pinnata, Gunnera manicata, Rheum palmatum, cycads, citrus (including lemons, calamondin orange and other fruiting varieties) and bamboos.

So, you see, the potential is there to create a holiday paradise without having to leave home, brave delays at the airport, find a house or petsitter…..all you need now is a deck chair and a cocktail or two, delivered on a tray!

Tewkesbury Magazine's Gregg Upwards Gets His Hands On Webb Ellis Cup With the countdown to the 2015 Rugby World Cup underway, the prestigious Webb Ellis Cup has been doing the rounds across the UK ahead of the competition which starts mid-September.

Locally, Gloucester Rugby's Kingsholm Stadium will host four matches: Tonga vs Georgia, Scotland vs Japan, Argentina vs Georgia and USA vs Japan.

Gregg spoke with RFU President Jason Leonard who told him how amazed he was by the number of people that turned up to have a glimpse at the famous trophy that England won in 2003.

Jason also told Gregg that Rugby is a Grassroutes sport that can be enjoyed by both sexes.

He is actively encouraging children to join their local club - you never know maybe your child too will hold this trophy after winning the Rugby World Cup one day.

Award winning Vintage Fair back in September

Tewkesbury’s award winning Vintage Fair is set to return on 12 September. As well as the regular vintage attractions, a new venue, vintage shuttle bus plus a classic car show are all new features of ‘Vintage on the Park’.

Tewkesbury Park Hotel are opening up their stunning grounds and historic hotel to host the vintage attractions and live entertainment taking place between 11am and 4.30 pm.

Solicitors practice, Thomson & Bancks are the event’s main sponsors, which has free entry and is set to raise funds for Midlands Air Ambulance.

Stephanie Jepson and the Courtney World Travel team are sponsoring the vintage bus service which will operate a 20 minute free shuttle service between the town centre and the venue. The vintage ‘bus stop’ will be based at The Crescent (next to The Abbey) and will operate between 11am and 4.30pm picking up vintage fans along the way.

The classic car show is being brought to Tewkesbury by Mark Knight, secretary of the local Austin Healey Owners Club. Mark runs Retro Marques a classic car specialist service based at Strensham and also has a bodywork and paint shop in Malvern.

Emma Adams and Emma Mason of Katherine's Closet will be manning the beauty parlour and are sponsoring the fashion show as well as being on hand to offer tips on vintage styling.

MARTIN LEWIS First Time Buyers

By Martin Lewis @moneysavingexpert It’s perhaps the cheapest time in history to get a first time buyers’ mortgage – with rates at historic lows and the new Help to Buy ISA due. Yet that’s not the same as saying it’s the best time to buy a house. Property is an ‘asset class’ that means prices move – so never assume buying a home is as safe as houses.

It’s far more important to examine your own reasons for buying. If it’s a long term place to live, to give you security of tenure, and the repayments are affordable (possibly even cheaper than renting) it's a reasonable aim.

Here’s what you need to know…

your home's current value you are borrowing. eg, a £20,000 deposit on a £100,000 means you’re borrowing £80,000 – so it’s an 80% LTV. The lower the LTV, the better deal you can get.

Step 1. Learn the lingo. A mortgage is likely to be the biggest financial transaction you'll make, so arm yourself with knowledge to understand the terms commonly used. Here are the key facts you’ll need to understand about any mortgage.

Imagine you've a £150,000 home, and want a £136,000 mortgage. That's a 90.7% LTV, the top 2 year fix is 3.98%. Yet if you use £1,100 of savings to reduce the borrowing needed, you'd cross a threshold and be at just under 90%, where the top 2yr fix is 2.69%. This would save over £700/year in mortgage payments alone.

a. The Rate: This is the interest you are charged, and it dictates the amount you repay each month. b. The Type: Most mortgages have rate reductions for the first two to five years. These come in a few types. Fixes are where the rate is locked in. Trackers are where it can only move in relation to UK base rate moves. And variable rate, where they tend to move with UK base rates, but can also move at the lenders whim. c. Length of the deal: If it's a short-term deal (eg, a 2yr fix), when does it end? d. Term: How long is the entire mortgage borrowing length - eg, 25yrs, and when will it be fully repaid? e. Penalties: Are there any early-repayment penalties if you try and pay it off or move, before the deal ends? f. Can you overpay? Are you allowed to pay more off without any penalties? This can be very useful as it means you pay less interest over the mortgage terms and clear the debt more quickly. g. Your loan-to-value (LTV): The proportion of

Step 2. Deposit, deposit, deposit. Every 5% bigger deposit up to 40% cuts the rate - so a little more can have a big impact.

Of course saving for a deposit is often a struggle. From autumn you’ll also be given the chance of a cash boost towards buying your first home if you save into a new type of Help to Buy ISA. You can save up to £200 every month and the Government will add 25% on top (so £50 on £200). You can also save an additional £1,000 when you first open it, meaning you can save £1,200 in the first month (that will have £300 added on top of it).

The minimum you need to have saved to get the bonus is £1,600 (so a £400 bonus), and the maximum the Government will contribute is £3,000 (so that means you will have saved £12,000). For full information see www.mse.me/helptobuyisa.

Step 3. Speedily compare to benchmark your cheapest. It’s important to start to work out the exact cost you’re likely to pay as soon as CONTINUED ON NEXT PAGE

possible. Mortgage rates are currently the lowest they have ever been, with even 5 year fixes below 2% (if you’ve a big enough deposit). While there is always the chance that they could sneak even cheaper, there’s not that much room to fall, yet there’s far more room for them to rise in future.

Buy scheme (ie, not the original only for new builds) is about the Government giving LENDERS a guarantee to enable them to offer more 5% deposit mortgages, meaning more are available.

If you're looking for a 5% deal, it makes no difference to you whether it's a Help2Buy or not.

Just go for the best available.

To find a mortgage you want to look across the whole market if possible. There are a number of lenders like Yorkshire BS, Tesco Bank and HSBC who only offer their mortgages direct, and these may be missed by mortgage brokers. So it’s important to start by doing a comparison that includes all deals. My own www.mse.me/mortgagebestbuys comparison tool does, as does www.moneyfacts.co.uk and Googles mortgage tables.

Step 6. Fixed or variable? With a fixed mortgage, the amount you repay is, er, fixed so it's like buying an insurance policy against possible rate rises. Variable deals move with UK interest rates (sometimes just at the provider's whim). Currently you only pay a touch more to fix.

Step 4. Two things that can kibosh your application. The days when lenders flung out deals to all and sundry are long gone. Getting accepted is now a challenge – I would suggest you start preparing and you position yourself at least a year in advance, or failing that as soon as possible. a) The credit check. It's crucial to manage your credit score, preferably months in advance, eg, never make late payments, minimise other applications and put a landline not a mobile on applications. It's very difficult to predict future interest rate moves. Even top economists are singing a different tune now from a year ago, and there's even the possibility they may fall before that. So focus on your own situation.

The more crucial the security of knowing exactly what you'll pay, the more you should edge towards fixing (& fixing longer). If cracking the rock-bottom deal's your driver, edge to shortterm trackers.

Word Ladder

Change one letter at a time (but not the position of any letter) to make a new word - and move from the word at the top of the ladder to the word at the bottom, using the exact number of rungs provided.

b) Affordability checks. Lenders must stress-test if your mortgage is affordable, even if rates were 6-7%. They'll want evidence of income, big bills, expenses, even eating out. So being frugal in advance helps.

Step 5. Don't fall for 'Help to Buy Mortgage' branding. While much hyped, the main Help to Page 22

You’ll generally pay a fee for face to face advise though brokers like www.lcplc.co.uk operate fee free via the phone (they get a fee from the lender).

Mitton celebrates as playground revamp takes a step forwards The Mitton community were celebrating last month as their playground revamp project was awarded £18,300 from the Tewkesbury Borough Council capital grant fund.

Tewkesbury Borough Council's Lead Member for Communities Cllr Kay Berry said: "We are really pleased to see our capital funding being used to support a project which will

have such a positive impact for our Mitton community. We have hopefully given Emma and the residents' association a strong start to their improvement campaign, and we look forward to seeing the refurbished playground."

The campaign to get a revamp sorted has been spearheaded by local resident Emma Wild with the support of MACA residents association.

Emma Wild, campaign lead said "I'm absolutely thrilled that we've been awarded this funding. The playground is in an awful state and this funding is a great platform for us to move forward with. We now have the challenge of finding another £30k to £40k and any

Cake and Bake Caramel Apple Sponge Bake This delicious moist sponge makes a perfect pudding for a special lunch. Serve warm or cold with ice cream or a spoonful of tangy crème fraiche.

Ingredients: • 100g granulated sugar • 4 tbsp cold water • 2 dessert apples, peeled, cored and thinly sliced • 200g self-raising flour • � tsp baking powder • 1 tsp ground cinnamon • 200g caster sugar • 200g unsalted butter, softened • 3 large eggs, lightly beaten • 3-5 tbsp milk • Icing sugar, to dust • Scoops of vanilla ice cream and lemon balm sprigs, to serve

Makes 9 squares Ready in 1 hour 10 minutes Page 26

1. Preheat the oven to 180C, fan 160C, Gas 4. Grease a 23cm square shallow cake tin and line the base and two sides with a baking paper.

2. Put the granulated sugar and water in a heavy-based saucepan and heat gently, stirring until the sugar has dissolved. Bring the syrup to the boil and continue boiling, without stirring, until the syrup has turned to a golden caramel.

3. Carefully pour the hot caramel into the base of the prepared tin.

Arrange the apples slices over the caramel (don’t worry if the caramel has set).

4. Sift the flour, baking powder and cinnamon into a large bowl and add the caster sugar, butter and eggs. Using a hand-held electric whisk, beat the mixture for 2-3 minutes until smooth and creamy. Whisk in enough of the milk to give a soft dropping consistency.

5. Spoon the mixture over the apples and gently level the surface. Bake in the preheated oven for 35-45 minutes or until the sponge is golden and springy to the touch and a skewer inserted into the centre comes out clean.

6. Leave the cake to cool in the tin for 10-15 minutes then carefully lift it out of the tin using the baking paper up the two sides of the tin. Cut into 9 squares and serve warm or cold, dusted with icing sugar. Top each square with scoop of ice cream and decorate with a sprig of lemon balm.

Replace the apple slices with peeled and sliced pears or try peeled and segmented oranges for a lovely citrus flavoured dessert.

Golden Years Memories of 50 Years Ago by Ted Bruning

Will African-Americans be holding street parties and torchlight parades on 6th August this year? They should – it’s the golden anniversary of a landmark in the struggle for civil rights. For on that day the US President signed into law, in the presence of Martin Luther King and Rosa Parkes, the Voting Rights Act that finally abolished literacy tests, property qualifications, “moral character” tests and all the other devices by which the Southern states maintained white supremacy.

Texan-born Lyndon Baines Johnson was a Southern Democrat. But while many Southern Democrats were avowed segregationists, Johnson was different.

Precociously intelligent but from a poor background, he had been exposed when young to the Social Gospel doctrine that saw the New Testament as not just religious but political too. He then had to work his way through college to become a teacher, and sharing the struggle of black and Mexican students helped him see America from their point of view.

Abandoning teaching for politics, he was elected to Congress in

1937 and gained a reputation as a hardheaded fixer, a manipulator, a wheelerdealer and when necessary a bully.

Elected to the Senate in 1949, he spent six years as Majority Leader, honing his political skills but keeping his radical instincts under a bushel. He was chosen as John Kennedy’s running mate in 1960 not because the Kennedy clan admired him – quite the opposite – but because as sophisticated New Englanders they believed they needed a rustic southerner.

When Kennedy was assassinated, the Voting Rights Act 1964 was in preparation.

It was the third in a series, all of them ineffectual, and Johnson wasn’t satisfied. As president in his own right he was dissuaded from drafting a tougher replacement so soon; but only a month after his inauguration came the Selma-Montgomery Marches when black Alabamans came out in protest at being denied the vote. Over a period of weeks they were beaten and brutalised by state police – on live TV. On 18th February a young unarmed black man was shot dead; and the brutality with which the police thwarted an attempt to hand in a petition to governor George Wallace on 7th March earned the day the

name “Bloody Sunday”.

America was scandalised and Johnson immediately ordered the Justice Department to draft ““the goddamnest toughest voting rights act that you can devise”, unveiling it on 15th March with a speech that ended with the words “we shall overcome”. He backed words with action by sending Federal marshals to protect the final Selma-Montgomery March two days later.

It took all his political skills, and Dr King’s help, to get the Act through Congress. And when Johnson was finally able to sign the VRA on 6th August he did so with a speech that still has to the power to draw tears.

This came at the beginning of an administration that saw the creation of Medicare, the end of segregation in public facilities from gas-station washrooms to universities, and a huge improvement in living standards for America’s poorest. But LBJ was never liked – he was always on the edge of scandals, always suspect – and in the end his reputation was destroyed by Vietnam. It is an enduring tragedy that his epitaph should be: “Hey, hey, LBJ! How many kids did you kill today?”

Children can enjoy a summer swim this school holiday for just 50p a day - thanks to a bargain membership offer at Cascades Leisure Centre in Tewkesbury.

The popular centre, which is offering an unlimited swimming membership for six weeks, has a range of fun features to keep children entertained - including a slide, water fountains and a rock pool.

Drop-in sessions for the single-hire scooters, which are suitable for anyone who can swim more than 25m, cost £10 per half hour and will be taking place throughout the coming month.

Finance Credit Cards for the Stages of your Life

By Ann Haldon With so many different credit cards to choose from, knowing which one is right for you often depends on the current stage of your life. Whether you’re a young adult just starting work, coping with the financial demands of a young family, or are approaching retirement, here are some of the features and benefits to watch out for.

StudentS and graduateS Most student account ‘packages’ include a credit card for those who qualify, and generally offer an average Annual Percentage Rate (APR) of around 19%. Credit limits are unlikely to be more than £500, but this is often all that is needed to provide a financial cushion. The majority of banks now offer a very useful feature that alerts you when a payment is due.

HSBC student credit card Offered alongside their student current account, you can make payments and view your balance online. Their representative variable APR is 18.9% - average for this type of card, with no annual fee payable.

Graduate cards work in much the same way, often linked to a ‘graduate’ account, and with a similar credit limit and APR. A slight difference is that some banks offer the facility Page 34

to transfer an existing balance over to your new graduate card at 0% interest for a limited time.

Lloyds Bank graduate card Lloyds offer a limit of up to £500 on credit cards if you are a graduate current account holder. A selection of cards is available depending on your income as a new graduate, with some cards offering 0% interest on balance transfers.

Young famiLY rewards cards Parents of young children may prefer to receive rewards and incentives from a credit card.

These could include free travel insurance, commission-free foreign currency, free days out and money-off vouchers for meals at child-friendly restaurants. tesco Clubcard credit card Currently the Tesco Clubcard credit card offers five Clubcard points for every £4 spent with Tesco, including your spend on petrol. You can also earn one point for every £4 spent using the card at other outlets.

Cash back cards Cash back credit cards come in handy if you can pay back the total balance each month.

You need to read the small print carefully, however, as higher penalties often apply for missed or late payments.

Santander 123 credit card Santander is currently offering 1% cash back in the major supermarkets when you use their credit card, 2% in major department stores, and 3% on petrol and transport, including National Rail and Transport for London.

Low interest rate cards Alternatively, you may simply want a card with low interest for the occasions when you don’t pay off the balance in full. You’ll need to have a good credit rating to get one of these cards, but they can help considerably when managing the family’s finances. mBna low rate credit card At the time of writing, this card from MBNA offers a low 6.5% variable rate for balance transfers, purchases and money transfers. You can transfer money from your credit card to a bank account with no handling fee, but the rate offered on the card may vary depending on your circumstances. retireeS A reduced income in retirement often means a narrower choice of credit cards. Banks and other financial institutions prefer to see a regular wage coming in, and some have a policy of refusing anyone over a certain age, regardless of how much

money they have saved. Even if your savings are with the bank you are applying to, banks have been quite rigid on this policy of late.

Saga Platinum credit card A variable representative APR of 11.9 % makes this credit card from Saga a middle-of-the-road option in terms of interest rate.

Not the lowest, but certainly not the highest, the perks of this card currently include an introductory 0% on balance transfers and purchases for the first nine months, and 0% foreign currency fees on transactions worldwide.

Credit-builder cards You may need to improve your credit rating at any stage of life, but this type of card comes with a high interest rate and a low credit limit. If separation or divorce have left you with no recent credit history, this may be a good option.

Should your credit file include bankruptcy, County Court Judgements, or other formal insolvency procedures, ‘standard’ credit cards will be unavailable to you for some time. Credit-builder cards are a good way to improve your credit rating in these circumstances, as long as repayments are made in full and on time every month.

Vanquish Visa credit card This credit-builder card from Vanquish offers a credit limit of between £150 and £1,000, depending on your circumstances and credit history. The variable representative APR is 39.9%, and the account can be managed online.

Right Side of the Road Taking your car on a holiday to Europe is a great way to avoid exorbitant airfares, hidden airport and airline costs and rip-off duty-free. And don’t get me started on airport crowds and stress.

However, before setting off for the continent in your car, there are a number of boxes you should tick before you get behind the wheel. Here’s a very simple checklist…

• Prepare the proper documents: Ensure all car documents are up to date, including the insurance papers and V5c ownership document. Take both parts of drivers’ licences for all appointed drivers.

• Preparing the car for driving on the continent: Book an off-schedule MoT, it will throw up any mechanical or electrical problems to be

attended to. In many European countries, it is illegal to drive with a broken exterior light for instance. Packing a full replacement bulb kit is worthwhile, too.

• Take an emergency warning triangle (two in Spain) and a hi-vis jacket (some countries require a vest for each passenger, too, so check before you go). If you are driving in France, breathalysers are still on the legal list of items that you are required to have in the car, but there is NO FINE for not having them.

• British cars should wear a GB sticker on the back to identify their country of origin, OR have Europlates bearing the blue GB symbol.

• Headlights: You will also need to adapt your headlights to avoid dazzling oncoming vehicles.

You can buy conversion kits, or your main dealer may be able to adjust the beam.

Drive safely, have a wonderful time and remember – never drive faster than your guardian angel can fly.

Around Britain Famous Streets & Roads 1. Chapel Street, Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwickshire - Once standing on the corner of Chapel Street in Stratford was New Place, the final home of William Shakespeare. Built in 1483, Shakespeare purchased the house in 1597 but it’s believed that he didn’t move into it until 1610. He remained there until his death, in 1616.

2. Ebenezer Place, Wick - When Mackays Hotel in Wick was built in 1883, it was decided that the building’s shortest side nevertheless constituted a street in its own right, and so, despite being just 206cm (81 inches) long, Ebenezer Place was created. The street is now officially recognised as the shortest street in the world.

3. Ffordd Penllech, Gwynedd - A prime contender for the steepest road in Britain, Ffordd Penllech in Harlech leads down from Harlech Castle in Gwynedd. So steep that it has been signposted ‘unsuitable for motors’, the one-way road (that is, downward traffic only) has a gradient of 18°, or almost 1:3.

4. Parliament Street, Exeter - A plaque at the entrance to Parliament Street in Exeter states that it is ‘believed to be the narrowest street in the world’. Although that honour actually belongs to a street in Reutlingen, Germany, at just 64cm (25 inches) at its narrowest point, Parliament Street is certainly a contender for the narrowest named street in Britain.

Pudding Lane, London - Pudding Lane is perhaps one of the most infamous addresses in London, having once been the site of Thomas Farriner’s bakery where, shortly after midnight on September 2 1666, the Great Fire of London broke out. Hooray for Hollywood!

Summer is the time for the great cinematic blockbuster, but there are days when it’s way too nice to be stuck in a dark movie theatre. Why not get out the deckchair and read the book before seeing the film after dark? Seeing how some of these great novels paved the way for Hollywood, it’s no wonder they’ve made millions for the studios.

Jurassic Park - Michael Crichton We’ve just taken an ill-fated trip to Jurassic World this summer, but why not read the original and best? Michael Crichton wrote his cautionary tale about what happens when scientists mess around with dino DNA way back in 1990, and the subsequent film made millions of children around the world believe that dinosaurs could roam the earth again.

Throw in some Chaos Theory and some moral and ethical questions and you’re left with one extraordinary book that’s full of suspense, and opportunities to roll your eyes and weep for the future.

Jaws - Peter Benchley This isn’t perhaps what you’d call ideal beach reading, but the suspense that Peter Benchley created in his 1974 novel of a great white shark terrorising a seaside resort is absolutely compelling. Focusing on the stories of the three men who are tasked with hunting and killing the killer shark, it’s tense, intense and a real nail-biter. ‘Jaws’ was a huge success, despite coming under attack from literary critics.

It’s no Moby Dick, but it’s the very definition of a page-turner and you’ll be devouring the story, much like a giant man-eating fish devours surfers.

The Firm - John Grisham Grisham’s second novel was a hit of stratospheric proportions, so it was no surprise that Hollywood soon came aknocking. Mitch McDeere is a

hotshot lawyer in the making, but the Harvard graduate turns down offers from major firms in New York and Chicago to work for Bendini, Lambert and Locke based in Memphis. They offer him a deal he can’t refuse but it soon becomes apparent that it may have cost him a lot more than he anticipated. No one ever seems to leave ‘The Firm’, or least, no one seems to leave the firm alive. Gritty and gripping it will at least ensure that you read your contract through carefully in future.

Lord of the Rings - J R R Tolkien Most wondered how on earth (or rather, how on Middle Earth) Tolkien’s epic fantasy novel could possibly be turned into a movie.

Turns out, it was made into three.

A sequel to ‘The Hobbit’, the novel expanded exponentially, and remains one of the best sellers of all time. The Dark Lord Sauron has created a ring to rule over all the other Rings of Power and bring him to reign over the whole of Middle Earth.

What he hasn’t counted on is complications caused by a group of hobbits, along with some elves, and a wizard known as Gandalf. Complex and intricate it’s great to get lost in Tolkien’s world. If you can’t get to grips with it, you can always use it as a doorstop.

Psycho - Robert Bloch In 1959, Robert Bloch wrote a book that would make us all morbidly fearful of so-called

‘Mummy’s Boys’. Inspired by a real life murder case in Wisconsin, the novel was quickly snatched up by Hollywood, and Hitchcock brought the story of seriously disturbed Norman Bates to the silver screen.

Middle-aged Norman runs the Bates Motel along with his domineering mother. Unwitting guest Mary Crane arrives at the motel, on the run having stolen $400,000 from her boss so she can marry her boyfriend and pay off his debts. But Norman’s momma is still running the show, and she’s not too happy about Mary’s arrival. It will, most definitely, all end in tears.

Disturbing and harrowing, if he still lives with his mum when you meet him, then run like the wind.

The Hunger Games - Suzanne Collins The most recent of the novelsto-film franchises is the story of Katniss Everdeen and her rise to fame in her District as two-time victor of the Hunger Games.

What Hollywood likes more than one blockbuster movie, is three blockbuster movies…even four, as the third instalment has been split into two films. The books are gruesome and, though chances are you’ve already seen at least the first film, the novels go into excruciating detail of the bizarre world the teenagers, forced to fight to the death, have to endure. The third instalment in particular is pretty nasty. Read it with your feet up and a nice drink in hand, and try not to focus on the fact that it’s kids killing kids.

Annual Bredon

BOAT RACE Saturday 5th September

The Annual Bredon Boat Race will take place on Saturday 5th September this year at the Old Rectory Meadow, Dock Lane, Bredon. 12-4.30pm.

News of last year – We were blessed with glorious weather and can only hope and pray for the same this year.

Attendance was up on the previous year and the atmosphere was very sociable and cheerful – was that the cider kicking in? The Bredon Boat Races has really become a community event. A place to meet up with local friends and soak up the atmosphere.

Entry will be held at last year’s price of £2.50, but remember that under 12’s go free. It is only £20 to enter a team in the races, but don’t leave it to the last minute – last year we had entries on the day which made timetabling very tricky. We only have the afternoon to fit all the heats in, so if you leave it too late, you might not get a chance to paddle.

Do you want to win? Most of the fun is in entering the races and every team gets two races in the heats with all equipment supplied. The times from the two races are combined and give a placing. The fastest two teams race in the final. But if you really want to win the trophy, it is tougher than you might think – the boats are built for stability rather than speed, so serious

paddling is hard going.

Most important of all though is having a team that will pull together – literally. Clashing paddles make lots of splashes which is fun on a hot day, but slow you down. The team to beat this year is last year’s victors, the event sponsors, Johnston Scotia.

They are already in training!

However, don’t be put off entering if you just want to have a go. Let your kids join you too and each child that enters, regardless of placing will get a treat this year – sweet shops yet to be raided.

Breastfeeding Myths i can’t breastfeed because: • i need medication for depression. Sometimes the benefits of treatment and breastfeeding outweigh potential risks (very low with some antidepressants).

• I have flat/ inverted nipples.

Breastfeeding is often possible and can even fix this – as can a simple operation.

• i’m unsure about breastfeeding; i’m going back to work, anyway. Even if you feed your baby just a few times, they’ll receive colostrum (initial breastmilk full of your antibodies).

Started bottlefeedng? Usually you can still breastfeed later, although it’s harder as time passes. You can breastfeed at first, then swap to expressed breastmilk, formula or mixed feeding when you return to work; you have a legal right to express milk at work and ask for a change in your working pattern.

• I can’t make enough milk: Despite what many mums are told, it’s extremely rare to be physically incapable of producing enough milk. The process can be hampered after a caesarean, or if you or your baby is poorly. Usually you just need time and correct technique, but if your baby’s suffering or you need to leave them, you can give formula...

...But mixed feeding will ruin my milk supply: If your baby needs the odd bottle of formula, don’t panic. Ideally, though, wait 6 weeks to try regular mixed feeding, as the ideal production rate is stimulated by demand and takes time to establish. Often, regular mixed feeding early on quickly leads to full formula feeding, the NCT warns, but it’s usually successful after breastfeeding is established.

Breastfed babies wake more at night: Research suggests parents of breastfed babies get more sleep, and there’s no night time bottle preparation.
