KEEPING SAFE AT THE BEACH THIS SUMMER Most beachgoers will have an enjoyable and relaxing time when they visit the beach this summer. So when something goes wrong, who can help? RNLI Lifeboat Volunteers can respond within minutes, and often save lives close to the shore. But sometimes, at the beach, seconds count. This is where RNLI Lifeguards play a vital role, they can respond instantly if dangers develop. A good lifeguard's work is preventative; many lives have already been saved by their vigilance. When you’re heading to a beach, we urge you to visit a Lifeguarded Beach. Make sure you and your family have a safe and fun trip to the coast. If lifeguards are on patrol, then you’ll need to know your flags:

A SUMMER OF MEMORIES This month’s editor’s note comes from me, Sarah. I work with Anne at Glos Directories and have done so for several years, so I thought it’s time for me to introduce myself to you, our lovely readers. My goodness, it’s August already! As the schools have broken up for their long summer break, I’m hoping we keep this lovely weather so us parents and kids can make the most of it. It can be hard to find things to do to keep children entertained, particularly if you work, but a planned day out is always great to have in the diary. How about the Tewkesbury Classic Vehicle Festival, for example? It takes place on 19th August, raises vital funds for charity and makes for a great family day out. Enter our competition on page 9 for a chance to win some free tickets. When I was a child (a long time ago now!), I used to be sent out in the morning after
a hearty breakfast and was told not to come back until tea time. Oh, the things we got up to! Building dens, climbing trees and swimming in the river to name but a few. Many a time I would come home to my mum looking bedraggled with scratches on my elbows and knees. Those memories will stay with me forever. Whilst children today are often drawn to their Xbox or PS4, it really doesn’t take that much to distract them if there’s something better to do. Take a look at the What’s On section in the back of this magazine for some ideas on what you could do with your family this summer. We’ll see you in September when it’ll be nearly Chri… (no, I’m not going to say it!).
Sarah Dingwall
Congratulations! To Bridget Groom, who is the lucky winner of the family ticket to the Cotswold Farm Park. Have a great time! Thanks for everyone who took part in our competition. Sorry you didn't win on this occasion, but we've got a little something to cheer you up – take the children to the Farm Park free of charge during August with this voucher:
Replicated vouchers will not be accepted. No cash alternative. Cannot be used with any other offers, including online tickets. One use only. Valid until 02/09/2018.

Short Story
Stanley’s Toenails By Jackie Brewster “Did you bring the sausages?” Peggy whispered, opening the caravan door. “Course,” Susan said, “are you going to let me in?” Susan was not in the best of moods. Her mum and Stanley were at the seaside for their honeymoon, and this was the third time she’d had to drive over to see them. “What’s up this time?” she sighed. “It sounded pretty urgent.” “It’s him.” Peggy nodded towards Stanley who was hunched over a jigsaw. “He’s got something wrong with his toenails.” “What sort of something?” Susan said. “They’re a funny colour.” Peggy lit the grill. “Are you ready for a sausage cob, Stanley?” “I was born ready,” Stanley said, rubbing his belly. “Let’s have a look at these toenails first, shall we?” Susan said, “Pop your feet up on the couch Stanley.” With much grunting Stanley obliged. At the sight of his toenails, Susan grimaced. Every nail was the colour of creosote. “That is odd,” she agreed. “Have you dropped something on them?” “I don’t recall. I woke up like this.” He wiggled his toes. “They don’t hurt or nothing.” Susan studied the toenails and frowned. She reluctantly gave them a sniff. She 6
touched one with her fingertip. It was sticky. “Thank you, Stanley,” she said firmly. ”Mother, I’d like a word in private.” “There isn’t anywhere private,” Peggy said. “It’s a static.” “Let’s step outside,” Susan insisted. Peggy tutted and removed her apron. “Are they going to drop off?” Stanley called as Susan shut the door behind them. Once out of earshot, Susan turned to Peggy. “Three times you’ve dragged me out here,” she said. “What’s all this about?” “That first time I’d forgotten my readers,” Peggy said. “And the second time?” Susan said. “When you thought there was a mouse?” “Just because you couldn’t find it didn’t mean there wasn’t one,” Peggy said. “Maybe,” Susan nodded, “but can you tell me why Stanley has got brown sauce on his toenails?” “Sauce?” Peggy feigned surprise. “I’m guessing you put it there,” Susan said. “Why would I do a thing like that?” “Is someone keeping an eye on the sausages?” Stanley popped his head out the window.
“They’re lovely Susan, from the butcher’s on the parade.”
“So?” Susan said. “He liked them so much he keeps asking for more,” Peggy moaned, “and there isn’t even a butcher’s on the parade.”
“Just give them a turn, Stan,” Peggy called irritably. “What does he mean – the butcher’s on the parade?” Susan said. “I brought those sausages just like you asked me to, like I’ve done every time.” “Hush,” Peggy whispered, “Stanley doesn’t know.” “Don’t tell me you’ve dragged me all the way out here just to bring sausages?” Susan folded her arms. “Don’t be cross, Susie.” Peggy patted her daughter’s hand. “When we got here I needed a bit of time to myself, so I went for a walk. And when I got back I said I’d been to fetch sausages. I didn’t want to offend him, you see. I just cooked up the sausages I’d brought from home.”

“Mum, you’ve got to own up,” Susan sighed. “He’ll think he’s married a compulsive liar,” Peggy said. Susan laughed. “He’d be right, wouldn’t he?” “I’ll tell him the butcher has sold out,” Peggy offered, “but what about his toenails?” “Have him paddle in the sea,” Susan suggested. “It’ll wash off and he’ll think he’s cured.” “You’re a lifesaver.” Peggy gave her daughter a squeeze. “I’d better get back to Stanley’s sausages.” “You’re welcome Mum,” Susan smiled. “Don’t forget to ask him if he wants brown sauce.”

LETHAL LEATHERJACKETS By Pippa Greenwood
Daddy-longlegs or crane-flies are starting to hatch out now – you may have seen their dangly-legged dancing as they get into your house, clattering against the windows and the lights? Maybe they are not your favourite creatures – indeed, many shy away from them! But these are the adults and it is their young – known as leatherjackets – that really cause grief in gardens. If your lawn has yellowing patches on it or you’ve noticed it being ripped up in th e last few weeks, chances are leatherjackets are to blame, and it is likely that the problem will get a lot worse. So what happens? Well, leatherjackets feed on the roots of grass (and can also cause problems in flowerbeds and vegetable plots) and this may cause the plants they attack to be weakened and even die back; worst of all, these juicy larvae are an extremely tasty snack if you happen to be an animal such as a crow, rook, magpie, badger or a fox. So as soon as there are leatherjackets in your garden, these animals come along in search of 14
them, ripping up your lawn or excavating beds and borders in the process. Lawns are usually worst affected and can be devastated in a matter of days. What is the best way to check if you have them? Early in the evening, water a couple of the yellowed patches really thoroughly and do the same with a patch that has been ripped up. Next, cover these areas in black polythene weighed down with a couple of bricks or similar. A double layer of black bin liners will do fine or, better still, use an opened-out plastic compost bag as this is particularly thick plastic. Next morning, lift the polythene and you’ll see the pests on the soil or lawn surface. So how do you know leatherjackets are to blame? Leatherjackets are even less goodlooking than their parents: greyish-brown, tubular, legless, up to about 4.5cm long and so nearly transparent that you can often see inside them, lunch and all. You can remove a good number by repeating this black polythene trick –
then, collect up the pests and put them on the bird table where they’ll be a useful source of free and nutritious bird food. If you want a much quicker, easier and more thorough solution then I suggest you use the biological control nematode ‘Nemasys Leatherjacket Killer’. It is quick and easy to apply – I just use a watering can and water it onto the affected area shortly after I’ve seen the first daddylonglegs and when soil conditions are right, so usually late August to late October. As long as you keep the area moist for about three or four weeks, it works a treat – and is even safe if you have a dog, pet rabbit or other pets (or kids!) who use the lawn. So how can you get hold of this? There are two pack sizes available,
suitable for standard lawns or those with a very large area to cover but you won’t find them in garden centres as they have a short shelf life. You can, however, find out more and order them from www. pippagreenwood.com/products in the Protect Your Plants section. We’ll send them out by first class post in an insulated envelope for you to show those pesky leatherjackets who’s the boss! Visit Pippa’s website www.pippagreenwood. com and you’ll find some great gardening items: Nemaslug, green controls for leatherjackets, chafer grubs, ants and greenfly, plus garden plant supports, raised bed kits, Easy-Tunnels, gardening tools, Grower Frames, signed books and more! You can even book Pippa for a gardening talk at your local gardening club.
