Front Cover: Whitcombe House Open during May and June, or by arrangement, for the National Garden Scheme charity. Whitcombe House is a dramatic, alluring, classical English cottage garden. Wafting, changing colours framed over arches and bent against ubiquitous stone walls. Sit by the Captain’s bridge, near the brook banked with primula and astilbe geranium. Pastel coloured borders with rose, potentilla, smilacina, acer and shrubbery bits. Be led down the paths of dreams and themes: the joy of plant seekers! Short Story Paws for Comfort By Jackie Brewster “Are you Ian, the bellboy?” An elegant lady in a tweed cape strode into the hotel ballroom, startling Ian, who’d been busy admiring his hair from every angle in the mirrored walls. Behind her another lady in an anorak, wrestling a nylon men’s suit carrier in her arms, struggled to keep up. Ian nodded warily. He’d already carried one old lady’s luggage to the second floor and that seemed like quite enough work for one day. “You’ll do perfectly,” she said, and turned to her companion. “Dolly, don’t you think he has the look of a young Liberace?” “Very handsome, Val,” the lady nodded emphatically. Ian instinctively smoothed his hair. “So that’s settled,” Val said. “You’ll do it.” “Do what?” Ian was alarmed. As a rule, he tried to do as little as possible. “We’re holding a fashion show in the hall and our model has let us down.” She smiled demurely. “I assume you have catwalk experience?” “A bit.” Ian’s gran had once entered him into a beautiful baby contest, so he knew that the world of fashion was just waiting to discover him. He frowned. “I’ll have to ask my manager.” “Don’t worry yourself about that,” Val said. “I’ve already cleared it with Mr Fulsome; he’s delighted with the arrangement.” Ian was surprised to hear this 6

because the air between him and Mr Fulsome had been frosty ever since Ian had been caught taking selfies in the honeymoon suite Jacuzzi. “What would I have to do?” Ian asked. “Imagine New York fashion week,” Val raised two manicured hands to set the scene, “and you’re the star of the show.” Ian’s eyes lit up.

In a few excited taps of his phone Ian alerted the world to his big catwalk debut.

“Where’s my manners?” she laughed. “Let me introduce our designer, Dolly Cramp.”

“Right, let’s get you into your outfit.” Val clapped her hands. “Dolly, hand over the suit.”

Dolly shuffled forward and awkwardly shook Ian’s hand, while trying not to lose control of the suit carrier.

“You want me to change here?” Ian asked; this was all happening very fast.

“You’re just perfect for my outfit.” She grinned as though unable to take her eyes off him. Ian had seen fashion designers in magazines but none of them looked like Dolly Cramp. He hoped the grubby anorak she was wearing wasn’t one of her designs. “The local TV station is here already,” Val added, “so you’ll get lots of exposure.” “What?” Ian suddenly felt excited. “Where?” Val pointed to the ballroom exit. “Just through those doors.” “Have I got time to let my friends know?” Ian pulled out his phone. Nothing was going to stop him announcing his big break in fashion. “Be my guest!” Val cried. “Get it out on social media, and everyone will see you on the teatime news.”

“We’ve seen it all before,” Dolly grinned, offering him the bag, “haven’t we Val?” “Let’s turn our backs anyway, Dolly?” Val said. “Give the lad his dignity.” Ian unzipped the bag, and a long brown garment of furry padded fabric came tumbling out. “What’s this?” He thought there must be a mistake. “It looks like a onesie?” “It’s the star of my Paws for Comfort range,” Dolly called over her shoulder. “Incredibly snuggly, and it makes the wearer look like a gerbil. Will you need a hand with the tail?” Ian held up the costume in horror and wondered whether he could make a run for it while their backs were turned. “And be quick,” Val added. “The cameras are rolling just outside.”

Armour at the Abbey The grounds of Tewkesbury’s magnificent Abbey will be transformed into a medieval encampment on the 6th and 7th May. The men will be practising the skills needed by a medieval army, including hand to hand fighting and archery; the women will be doing all the family work, e.g. cooking over open fires, washing clothes or mending and repairing them. Even the children will be in costume. On the 7th, the action moves into the splendid setting of the Abbey. To a background of medieval music, visitors will be able to watch the rituals of arming a knight and robing a priest. The Sacristy will be open as will the vault housing the bones of George Duke of Clarence and his wife Isabella. 12pm to 4.30pm both days. £5 per person or £7.50 for both days.

Tewkesbury Means Business Tewkesbury Means Business is an event to show plans to support business across the Tewkesbury Borough. At the same time, Tewkesbury Borough Council is increasing its service to local firms with the introduction of a new Business Growth Hub. The plans will be outlined at a Tewkesbury Means Business breakfast event on Thursday, 10 May at Tewkesbury Park Hotel. It is being organised by Tewkesbury Borough Council, Business West and Gloucestershire’s Local Enterprise Partnership - GFirst LEP. Key to the development of business services in the borough is the setting up of the Tewkesbury Growth Hub which will open in the autumn. The Hub, currently being built at the council’s Public Service Centre on Gloucester Road in Tewkesbury, will offer business services to around 4,000 companies located in the borough. To register for the event, search for “Tewkesbury Means Business”.

Local Event

Classic Car Event at Prescott Hill Climb - 13th May The 13th of May will see the 15th annual Classic Car Event take place at the Bugatti Owners Club at Prescott. The event is organised by Cleeve Vale Rotary Club and the proceeds will go to Rotary-sponsored local, national and international charities. The event is unique in that the majority of the cars which take part are a minimum of 25 years old. Some are much older and not usually seen on the road. Last year, for example, the first car up the hill was a 1904 Oldsmobile. There are 200 entrants, from all over the UK and this year 8 from the Netherlands; who make a donation to run up the hill, however, this is neither a race nor a time trial. Like most Prescott events, it's an opportunity for enthusiasts and the general public to see a little bit of history. Before and after the entrants "drive the hill", the cars can be viewed in the Paddock and there is also a static display of classic cars in the Orchard where the public can view these beautiful machines at close quarters and chat to their owners.

Cleeve Vale, leads the event organisation and has done so for the last 10 years. Almost ÂŁ250,000 has been raised over the years, a testament to Geoff's dedication, knowledge and sheer hard work. The event is open to the public with the gates opening at 9.00am. The first car up the hill will be at 10am. At 2.00pm a cavalcade of all the cars from the static display travel up the hill. There is ample car parking available for spectators for a donation of ÂŁ15 per car which covers parking and entrance for occupants. There is also plenty of space to picnic whilst watching the day's events. In addition to the event on Sunday, there is also the Classic Cotswolds Car Tour on Saturday 12th May. Around 50 classic cars will follow a pre-planned tour of the North Cotswolds before motoring down to the Classic Motor Hub near Bibury to view the exhibition of classic cars and enjoy afternoon tea.

The prime organiser of the event is Cleeve Vale Rotary Club and this year Winchcombe Rotary Club has taken an active role in supporting the ongoing success of this event. Geoff Kimber, a longstanding member of Page 11

Men aged over 50 can ask their GP for a test, but not many do. It's not a diagnosis, but it can indicate whether further investigation is worthwhile. The Cotswolds charity suggests that men aged between 50 and 75 (or over 40 if a close relative's had prostate cancer) should ask for a PSA test.

Recent high-profile cases of well-known men like Stephen Fry being diagnosed have highlighted a subject that most men simply won't talk about. One in eight men will get prostate cancer, but some are at much higher risk. “Early detection is vital”, says Roger Powell, trustee of the Cotswolds charity, “as in its early stages, there may be no symptoms. So a quick blood test is really worth having”.

The Birth of a Railway

Demolition at Winchcombe in July 1979

By David Aldred

The Gloucestershire Warwickshire Steam Railway is now open all the way from Cheltenham to Broadway. For this month's article I thought it might be interesting to discover how the heritage railway came into being. The death knell for the Cheltenham to Honeybourne railway line was sounded in March 1968. The last regular passenger train was withdrawn by British Rail so that only goods trains and the occasional passenger train, diverted from the main Bristol to Birmingham line, travelled the route. Its end, however, dragged on, despite the obvious fact that British Rail was losing money keeping it open for the few trains which used it. Matters nearly came to a head in June 1972 when it announced the line would be closed on 1 January 1974. This news got Cheltenham councillors very excited and they spent ÂŁ60,000 on a report into the feasibility of building a north to south relief road on the abandoned track. Imagine their dismay when less than a year later British Rail changed its mind! Trains continued to run. On 25 August 1976, the unexpected happened. Several wagons of a goods train travelling to South Wales derailed just outside the site of Winchcombe station, damaging a stretch of track. British Rail decided not 16

Lifted track awaiting collection at Bishop's Cleeve

to repair the damage. It offered the track and the land to an embryonic Gloucestershire Warwickshire Steam Railway Society, which had been started by just four visionaries who hoped to keep the line intact. Not surprisingly this small society could not afford the purchase, and so it was ironical that three years later in July 1979 when funds had been promised, British Rail changed its mind for a second time, declaring it wanted to keep the route open, despite already removing the rails! Then in August just a year later British Rail changed its mind for a third time! Its chairman Sir Peter Parker announced it was prepared to sell the line because of the financial problems it was facing. The society immediately started negotiations with a view to initially reopening the stretch from Toddington to Honeybourne. There was great enthusiasm for the project with over 700

people attending a meeting in Shaftesbury Hall in the centre of Cheltenham in February 1981 when the society first appealed for volunteers. Tim Bazeley, the secretary, painted for the audience an ambitious future as a tourist and community railway possessing thirty-five steam locomotives in this respect subsequent events indicated that enthusiasm outran realism! However, there was enough enthusiasm to ensure wheels began to turn the very next month. A company was set up to raise capital for the purchase, and both the company and its supporters still continue to manage their developments and finances carefully and prudently to ensure the continuing success of the railway. In March the Toddington site was leased from British Rail so that a start could be made before the actual purchase. By early June one hundred and twenty yards of track had been laid towards Winchcombe (not Honeybourne as originally planned)

Tim Bazeley waves from the first locomotive driven along the short re-laid track at Toddington

and by late June steam locomotive 2807 had arrived from the famous locomotive scrapyard at Barry for restoration; it still runs on the railway today. The first public train ran on 22 April 1984 to Didbrook. The rest, as they say, is now history – and a remarkable achievement.

Striking Sunflowers by Pippa Greenwood

Sunflowers are one of the most stunning and impressive flowers you could have in your garden, and are easy to grow too. Sow them this month to achieve a fantastic flowery display in just a few months’ time. So which ones should you choose and how do you go about getting the best crop of flowers? There are fast-growing and potentially very tall varieties such as ‘Russian Giant’ and ‘Titan’, with the latter reaching a potential height of up to 360cm or 12ft and having heads of up to 60cm (2ft) in diameter! There are some delightful miniature or dwarf varieties. The F1 variety ‘Little Dorrit’ grows to about 60cm (2ft) and has rich yellow flowers with very dark centres. Another favourite is ‘Little Leo’ at just 45cm (18in), which makes lots of impact with golden yellow heads on multibranching stems. Nowadays there are many colours other than yellow readily available, such as ‘Black Magic’, which has maroon flowers and is multi-branching, reaching a height of about 180cm (6ft). Grow yourself a few for cutting too, and you’ll have a vase or more full of flowers that would cost a fortune in the shops. Many varieties are suitable, 18

including the orangey-brown ‘Velvet Queen’, ‘Black Velvet’ and the bi-coloured and pollenfree ‘Magic Roundabout’. For containers, ‘Pacino Colada’ is a compact variety growing to just 40cm (16in) and has 10cm (4in) wide golden-yellow flowers, making a wonderful plant for a sunny patio, sheltered balcony or in the flower beds. Children love a competition to grow the tallest plant and varieties like ‘Russian Giant’ and ‘Giant Single’ are perfect for smaller gardeners, and as they reach heights of about 180cm (6ft) will soon dwarf them! Sunflowers make a cheap and cheerful addition to a garden boundary, adding splashes of colour to a dreary fence line or helping to mask a garage or shed. You should get a good crop of blooms if you sow sunflowers between March and May, depending on the weather and where you live. You can sow them straight into the soil or into pots of compost. I like to use RootTrainers to encourage really well-developed and deep roots to develop, and make it easy to plant out the sunflowers with minimum root disturbance; see www.pippagreenwood. com/products/grow-great-crops

for more information. As their name suggests, sunflowers need plenty of sunshine to thrive. However, although many are tall, each plant does not actually take up much space at ground level. Slugs and snails love sunflowers so I always grow them in small individual pots and plant them out when they’re a few inches tall. This means they’re bigger and tougher and better able to resist attack. As an added precaution, put a ring of slug-deterring material around the base of each one – crushed shells, crushed eggshells, coco-shell or pine needles for instance. If you’re growing sunflowers on anything other than a protected site, it may be necessary to give the taller varieties some support in the form of a sturdy bamboo cane or slim stake, just in case the wind blows too strongly! Visit Pippa’s website www. pippagreenwood.com and you’ll find some great gardening things: ‘Grow Your Own with Pippa Greenwood’ (where you receive your chosen garden-ready vegetable plants in May accompanied by weekly advice and tips from Pippa) plus RootTrainers, Nemaslug, bio-controls, gardening tools, raised bed kits, Grower Frames, signed books and more!

Sweet Recipe Chocolate Fondant Puddings Don’t overcook these divine chocolate puds or the centres will set and you’ll lose the gooey molten middle. You can prepare them a couple of hours in advance and bake them just before serving.

Ingredients: • 175g unsalted butter, plus extra for greasing • 175g caster sugar • 175g good quality plain chocolate, broken into pieces • 3 large eggs • 50g plain flour • Cocoa powder and icing sugar, to dust • Whipped cream and strawberries, to serve

Serves 4 Ready in 45 minutes

TIP

If you don’t have ovenproof ramekin dishes, you can use small metal pudding basins or ovenproof teacups. 20

1. Preheat the oven to 190C/fan 170C/gas mark 5.

Lightly butter four 300ml capacity ramekin dishes (see Tip) and sprinkle with a little of the caster sugar.

2. Place the chocolate and butter in a heatproof

bowl set over a pan of simmering water and leave until melted. Remove from the heat and stir until smooth. Cool for 5 minutes.

3. In a large bowl whisk the eggs and remaining

caster sugar together for 5 minutes until very thick, pale and creamy, then whisk in the chocolate mixture. Sift over the flour and gently fold in using a metal spoon.

4. Divide the mixture between the four dishes. Place on a baking sheet and bake in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes until the puddings have risen and are just set on the outside – the tops should still wobble when pressed lightly. Run a knife around the edge of the puddings and turn out onto plates. Dust with cocoa powder and icing sugar and serve immediately with whipped cream and strawberries.

A Plea: Please Stop Being So Courteous This is a plea to all well-meaning drivers out there, who act with intended courtesy but are rewriting the Highway Code in doing so. Here are two examples that regularly happen to me: 1. You are turning right off a main road, your exit is clear and you are waiting for the oncoming car to go past on a clear road. But the other driver stops on the carriageway and flashes their lights to let you go. 2. You approach a roundabout and stop to give way to the car on the roundabout, but the driver stops on the roundabout to let you enter it. These actions may appear to be well meaning as the driver is interrupting their journey to let you continue yours, but these “unselfish” acts contravene the Highway Code.

Rule 172: “You must give way at a Give Way” sign”. Rule 185: “When reaching a roundabout you must give priority to traffic approaching from the right, unless directed otherwise by signs, road markings or traffic lights” (Note: not a car slowing and flashing its lights). Apart from the confusion caused, these actions are classic “bash for cash” ploys too: the ‘wellmeaning’ driver slows and flashes lights, you go, they floor it, you drive into them. They say it’s your fault. Over to the insurance companies. The Highway Code may appear to be clunky in places but it’s a set of rules that means we all know what to expect and can act accordingly. Please, please stick to the Highway Code. I’ll happily wait for you to pass and we all know where we are. Safe driving!

Unique knitted show garden installation Hundreds of knitters from all over the world have answered a Gloucestershire widow’s call to craft hearts for a special knitted garden in memory of her husband. Clare Young, 50, from Gloucester, has been overwhelmed by the huge response to her ambitious plan to create the world’s first full-sized knitted show garden installation at RHS Malvern Spring Festival on May 10-13 (www.rhsmalvern.co.uk).

have been sent to Clare – more than doubling her target well before her early May deadline.

Her plea to knit 10,000 hearts for the garden has been shared and re-shared on social media and people from as far away as the USA and New Zealand have picked up their knitting needles in response.

The knitted hearts will be hung in and around the knitted garden, with some of the additional hearts made available for visitors to purchase. The money raised will go to Sue Ryder Leckhampton Court Hospice in Cheltenham which cared for Clare's late husband Ken.

Amazingly four crafters, now known as ‘Queen of Hearts’, have created 1,000 hearts each. As a result, a staggering 25,000 ‘works of heart’
