Tudor House Tudor House in Hailes Street, Winchcombe, was given to the town in 1937 by Gertrude Shikle as a home for 'Gentlefolk of limited means' and is maintained by a group of local trustees. It is a large Victorian building and was converted into four flats in 1957. Last year, the two ground floor flats were refurbished and a new fire escape installed for the upper floors. Plans have been prepared for alterations to the first and second floors to form three flats, giving five in total and work will eventually be carried out when funds are available. The Trust's only income is from the tenant's maintenance charges so grants, donations and bequests are being urgently sought for this work and general maintenance. The trustees would be glad to hear from any organisations and person who could help financially. Contact: mspodd@gmail.com The property has a large hidden garden which will be open to the public during Winchcombe Open Gardens on 9th June. Do come and see the garden and what is a mainly unknown asset to the town. Photographs by Stewart Richardson
There will be some changes to our programme schedule in March. John Brooks joins the team of 'Classical Choice' presenters on Sunday 17th March; Monday evening's 'Folk Show' presented by Kevin O will be repeated at 1pm on Tuesdays and Jane Stovell's Thursday 'Country Show' will be repeated Sunday afternoons at 2pm. Lee Jay's 'Soul Train' will now be on at 2pm on Fridays and from March 18th there will be a Monday Breakfast Show starting at 8am which John Oldham and Jane Stovell will host on different weeks. If you would like to join our team of volunteers please get in touch. Perhaps you would like to be a programme presenter or an interviewer? Or maybe you are computer literate and have a spare hour or two each week; we could do with your help looking after our technical equipment. You don't have to live in Winchcombe and full free training is available if required for all posts. If you would like to visit our studio to see what is involved before deciding if you would like to volunteer, again please get in touch. March Madness
Hello and welcome to the March issue of your local community magazine. March always seems to be a busy month with spring on its way, the daffodils coming into bloom and the start of getting the garden up together after the winter so we are ready to enjoy the long summer days and warm evenings. A real bonus is that the days are becoming a little longer every day. Don’t you just love the feeling of driving home from work without having to put your lights on – I know I do! The trouble is there is always something to do when you get home and having lighter nights means there's no excuse not to do the jobs you've been putting off for ages. With more light streaming through the windows, I do find that it shows up the dust and dirt which prompts me to do a “spring clean”. None of us love the job of cleaning out cupboards but there is a smug satisfaction that comes from sorting

stuff out or throwing things away I no longer need, before putting what’s left back in a neat and orderly fashion. It’s amazing how much you accumulate in just a small amount of time. There’s a feeling of calmness when my home has some order to it, even though I know it won’t last long with a teenager in the house! The end of March sees the start of British Summer Time, the clocks going forward and Mothering Sunday all falling on Sunday 31st March. So, with that date in mind, I’d better get on with the spring clean so I can enjoy Mother’s Day and enjoy being waited on hand and foot. (I can dream…)

Local History
When trams ran up Cleeve Hill - Part Two “Every little shed and shanty has invested in a pennyworth of cardboard, on which the classic legends 'Tea and Hot Water', 'Aerated Waters', 'Furnished Apartments' and so forth are inscribed in faithful and wonderful characters to entice the simple trammist.” So wrote Selina Jenkins in the Cheltenham Chronicle in July 1901 - a month before the trams started running up Cleeve Hill. In this article I will consider the attractions designed “to entice the simple trammist”. Already an established hostelry, the Rising Sun Hotel's profits must have soared as trammists flocked through its door, but if they were of a teetotal persuasion, then across the road the Cleeve Hill Café beckoned. In 1901, in a far-sighted speculative venture, CJ Davies, a grocer from Suffolk Road in Cheltenham, bought a plot of land for £200 and built a rustic-looking café with a terraced pleasure garden below. Ten years later the proprietor Ernest Batstone, a pastry cook of Upper Bath Road was boasting “Parties of 200 catered for at a moment's notice”. I doubt that would meet the requirements of trades descriptions today! Sadly, the café suffered a disastrous fire in the early 1930s and the
site is unrecognisable today.
Golfers, of course, could find refreshment in one of the two club houses; the Town Club, for traders and merchants, at the clubhouse on the main road, now 1 and 2 Cleeve Hill, or the Cheltenham Golf Club for gentlemen, bordering the common near the Malvern View. The Malvern View, then a small hotel, set up its own tea garden as shown in the postcards designed for the visitors to send home to extol the delights of the hill. From the tram terminus outside the Malvern View the trammist had to walk a hundred yards or so further on to sample The Malvern View Hotel Tea Garden can be seen in this postcard. The clubhouse of the Cheltenham Golf Club stands on the far left.
The Geisha Tea House
the delights of the Geisha Tea House - a little bit of Japan recreated on the Cotswold scarp! In 1911 Annie Smith from Cheltenham was the proprietor, helped by Fanny Yiend who lived locally. Annie provided weekend accommodation from Saturday evening to Monday morning for 10/6d (52p). Sadly, this too no longer exists, demolished in 1988 as rot and woodworm had rendered it beyond restoration. However, a faint echo of its architectural style survives in the firstfloor balcony of the Cleeve Hill Hotel, built next door in the 1920s. And finally, across the road from the Geisha Tea House was Mrs Hobley's Cosy Corner Tea Lawns. Little is known of this venture except Arthur Hobley worked as the golf professional at the Cheltenham Golf Club from 1896 to 1933. With this choice of opportunities for the trammists to take refreshment and enjoy the views from Cleeve Hill, many never

ventured onto the common. A few enterprising business people, mostly from Cheltenham must have made a good profit from their fellow townspeople seeking a pleasant trip out. Perhaps those who lived on the hill were not so welcoming, for they complained about discarded tram tickets, orange peel and ginger pop bottles! However, no tram tickets were dropped after 1929, when the tram was replaced by the bus. The turning circle built for the bus near the top of Stockwell Lane still exists. Although it disappeared ninety years ago the tram set the trend and Cleeve Hill continues to be a popular venue today for walkers and trippers.

Nine-year-old raises over £7k for endangered animal
A determined nine-year-old from Cheltenham goes above and beyond to support his favourite animal, the cheetah and to-date has managed to raise over £7,000 through the sale of handmade cards.
Jeremy makes beautiful Spirograph greeting cards as well as other seasonal and general-use cards, that he sells at any opportunity he gets. His cards are currently for sale at various outlets across Cheltenham, including Starbucks, Café Nero, Black Gold Coffee, the Great British Boutique and several Costa branches. "His dedication and commitment are remarkable," says Jeremy's mum Abi. "He makes cards almost every night and is always looking for places to sell or someone to be a matching donor."
Help Jeremy in his mission to raise money and awareness for the endangered cheetah! Buy or sell his cards and share his story. You can follow his progress on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter: Cards 4 Cheetahs.

Jeremy started his card-making business when he was 6 years old, planning to keep the money to buy his own island where he would be king. However, he soon realised that it is a lot more satisfying to give than to receive, so he emptied his bank accounts and cheerfully gave all of his money to cheetah organisations (now exclusively to the Cheetah Conservation
Fund - cheetah.org).

Short Story
Laundry Day
“Give me a hand with this would you?” Danny had been sitting anxiously on the park bench. He turned to a lady with a mass of wild grey hair struggling to throw a length of thin rope over the branch of a nearby oak tree. “Me?” Danny said.
“Yes you, you’re a tall lad,” she called, unravelling the rope. “I want to tie this end to this tree, and the other end to that big one over there.” Danny was glad of the distraction. His cousin had set him up on a blind date with her friend Rebecca, and he wasn’t at all sure what to expect.
Under the lady’s watchful eye, he tied up the rope so that it was taut between the two trees. “We’re going to peg out my washing,” she said, smiling.
He then saw a wicker basket filled with damp laundry on a rock behind her. 10
“It’s only bedding. There’s no unmentionables, so don’t get your knickers in a twist.” “Do you always dry your washing in the park?” Danny asked. “Aren’t you worried that someone might steal it?”
“Who’d want my threadbare sheets?” the lady cackled, unravelling a flowery duvet cover. “It’s my First Day of Spring ritual, they always smell lovely after a blast of country air.” “Doesn’t anybody ever stop you?” he asked. “Like who?” She took a couple of pegs from a bag. “Air’s free, isn’t it?” “I suppose,” Danny agreed, looking at his watch. “What’s up?” she said. “Stood you up, has she?”
“I hope not.” Danny helped her straighten the sheets.
As she pegged the last pillow case a small scrap of white fabric fluttered to the ground.
Danny picked it up before it could get muddy. It was a handkerchief, and across one corner was neatly embroidered the name ‘Rebecca’. “That’s funny,” he said, frowning, “the girl I’m waiting for is called Rebecca.” “Well fancy that.” She coyly took the handkerchief from him. “Bet you weren’t expecting me.”
Danny gulped. It was clear he’d been the victim of his cousin’s cruel practical joke. “You seem like a really nice person,” he began, “and you’ve got some very interesting laundry ideas…” “Thank you,” the lady said admiring her line of washing. “You seem quite a nice lad yourself.”
“But I’m worried about the age gap,” Danny continued, choosing his words carefully. “I’m not sure we’d have a lot in common.” The lady brushed her hair out of her eyes and squinted at him. “I have to disagree,” she said, and winked. “There’s one thing we’ve got in common.”
“What’s that?” Danny said warily; he’d hoped she would be better at taking the hint. “My granddaughter Rebecca,” she laughed, as a girl of Danny’s age walked towards them. “Hello Nanna.” She kissed the lady on the cheek.
“Hello Rebecca. This is Danny. He’s been very chivalrous.”
Danny felt his face burning. She patted his shoulder kindly. “I don’t think you need a chaperone.” She handed him the basket. “Just bring in my washing when it’s ready.” By Jackie Brewster

GARDENING
Fabulous Fruit Trees It is not difficult to grow a fair quantity of fruit, such as apples, pears, plums or cherries, in even a tiny garden – so how do you manage it?
First, choose a ‘rootstock’ – the type of tree root the fruit variety has been grafted on to – that has a dwarfing effect, meaning the tree is unlikely to become huge. Examples include rootstocks ‘Pixey’ on plums, ‘M9’ on apples or ‘Quince A’ on pears.
An apple or pear can be a border edging, with each tree spreading to 150cm (5ft) and trained into a horizontal barrier about 45cm (18in) above ground which bears fruit along the horizontal ‘arms’. Either place a pollinator tree nearby to ensure good fruit set, or choose the self-fertile ‘Concorde’ pear for a reasonable crop with just one tree. Ready-trained stepovers are available from some garden 18
centres and specialist fruit nurseries.
Growing fruit trees in pots works well, provided you use a good-sized pot – perhaps even a half-barrel. Use a loambased John Innes No. 3 compost and place plenty of drainage material at the base of the container – broken flower pots work well! Make sure the tree is fed and well-watered and kept under control.
‘Family Trees’, on to which two additional varieties of the same fruit have been grafted, let you grow three varieties of apple or pear on one tree. The varieties are selected to cross-pollinate and you should get a fair crop from an established tree. With limited space, you can grow ‘Ballerina’ or ‘Minarettes’ trees. These columnar apple trees produce fruit on short spurs growing out of the main stem, resulting in trees measuring up to 2.4m (8ft) tall, but which can be planted just
60-90cm (2-3ft) apart. Many different varieties are available, including dessert apples, cooking apples, pears, plums, gages and damsons.
If space is so limited that you can only have one tree, choose a ‘self-fertile’ variety that doesn’t need a companion and can fertilise its own flowers. For apples, varieties include ‘Queen Cox’, ‘Greensleeves’ or ‘Red Devil’, for pears ‘Concorde’ or ‘Invincible’, for cherries ‘Stella’ and for plums ‘Victoria’. A pollinator will give a heavier crop, but without you’ll still get a fair quantity of fruit. You can grow fruit as an ‘espalier’, trained and pruned so that the tree lays flat against a fence or framework, with several parallel fruit-bearing arms or in a fan shape against the surface.
SHACK
This works well for cherries, plums, damsons and apricots.
A cordon or single-stemmed apple or pear can be trained over a simple arch, or grow one variety up one side and another (a suitable pollinator) up the other – it’ll look stunning in the spring when in flower, and then again when it bears its tasty crop! At www.pippagreenwood.com you’ll find some great gardening items: ‘Grow Your Own with Pippa Greenwood’ for vegetable plants and advice, Nemaslug and other natural pest controls, stylish cloches, pretty plant supports, the fantastic SpeedHoe, gardening tools, Grower Frames, signed books and more! Auction Anecdote In Smiths’ January Antiques and Collectables Sale, there was a dramatic contrast of styles standing side by side on the ceramic shelves. The section predominately offered a typical selection of attractive antique china such as Victorian dessert and tea services, Royal Worcester vases and various early 19thcentury blue and white Pearl Ware. However, the most highly priced item turned out to be a small collection of 1960’s Troika pottery which a lot of people find ugly and unappealing. This large Troika ‘Anvil’ It is a bit of a vase sold for £500 ‘marmite situation’ though since it also has its avid admirers – people tend to either love it or hate it. The pottery opened near St Ives in 1962 and worked to the new ideology that pottery could be purely decorative rather than functional. The style was very radical and modern with strong geometrical shapes and trendy descriptive names such as ‘Wheel’, ‘Coffin’ or ‘Double Bass’ vase. It was almost instantly successful and sold to both local tourists, and through hip shops such as Liberty and Heals in London. The factory closed in 1983 due to lack of demand as the wares had gone totally out of fashion. After significant interest and requests for condition reports, Smiths sold a large Anvil vase for £500, a smaller Wheel vase for £250 and a Tin Mine table lamp for £410 - by contrast most of the pretty antique china sold for less than £100! Smiths’ next sale is on the 5th of April and includes a special section for stamps and postcards as well as a full range of antiques and collectables. Mini Orange & Chocolate Cakes These lovely little citrus cakes take no time to make and are a delicious sweet treat.
Ready in: 1 hour, plus cooling and setting | Makes 12
Ingredients
225g unsalted butter, softened, plus extra for greasing 12 mini chocolate cookies 225g golden caster sugar 225g self-raising flour ½ tsp baking powder
4 medium eggs, beaten
Juice and zest of 1 orange
100g milk chocolate, melted, plus extra grated, to serve
T IP
Orange slices, to serve (optional)
28
Preheat the oven to 180C, fan 160F, gas mark 4. Use the extra butter to thoroughly grease the holes in a 12-hole muffin tray. Line the base of each hole with a circle of baking paper. Drop a mini chocolate cookie into each hole. Place the butter, sugar, flour, baking powder, eggs, orange juice and zest in a large mixing bowl. Beat with a hand-held electric whisk for 3-4 minutes until smooth and creamy.
Spoon the mixture evenly into the holes in the muffin tray. Bake in the preheated oven for 18-20 minutes until risen, golden and springy to the touch. Cool in the tin for a few minutes then run a small palette knife around each cake to loosen and turn out on a wire rack. Leave to cool completely. Dip the top of each orange sponge in melted chocolate and place on a wire rack set over a baking sheet. Leave for 30 minutes or until set. Serve topped with grated chocolate and orange slices, if liked.
These make delicious warm puddings – instead of leaving to cool and dipping in the chocolate, serve warm drizzled with the melted chocolate and with a dollop of whipped cream or crème fraiche.
