Alton & Alresford • May 2019 Edition NEW ALRESFORD TOWN TRUST HAVE FINISHED A MAJOR RENOVATION The Avenue was given to the town by the Bishop of Winchester 150 years ago, and there are well over 100 trees on the northern side, some of them close to that age. It is part of an 18th century turnpike, or toll road, between Winchester and Alton. It was then and, now that the bypass has taken away much of the traffic, still is, a calm and peaceful place for locals and visitors to walk or to sit in the shade of the trees on one of the benches provided. It also provides a rather grand western entranceway to the town.

“A lot of effort has gone into sustaining the heritage of The Avenue and locals want to continue the legacy of the lovely gateway to the town.” Trustee Mr Keith Divall said: “We have spent £20,000 working on the trees including replacing some because of disease, but we have replaced them all with the same

Shakespeare’s most popular plays set to feature in Titchfield Festival Theatre’s Summer Season Titchfield’s successful and highly popular Bard at the Barn is back again this summer, featuring several of Shakespeare’s best loved plays. There are no fewer than six productions this year, including Shakespeare’s ‘forgotten’ rock & roll masterpiece – Return to the Forbidden Planet, based on the playwright’s celebrated The Tempest as well as the iconic B-movie The Forbidden Planet and Lost in Space. This promises to be a joyous romp through jukebox songs, rock and roll music with fun for all the family. The historic Great Barn – located only yards away from where England’s most celebrated writer lived and worked for a time – will be at the heart of our 2019 summer season. All are amongst Shakespeare’s most popular plays starting with the letter “T” with several comedies to give a lighter touch, including a performance by the Titchfield Festival Youth Theatre – Time Please, Mr Shakespeare. The plays are: Two Gentlemen of Verona, The Taming of the Shrew, Twelfth Night and The Tempest. Kevin Fraser, Artistic Director of Titchfield Festival Theatre explains, “This year’s Bard at the Barn season will be a real treat for those

who love Shakespeare focusing on comedy. For those of you who enjoy a contemporary twist, we have given The Tempest a unique setting: a motorway service station. The Great Barn is the perfect place to see arguably one of the Bard’s first ever plays – Two Gentlemen of Verona. It is looking stunning this year with over £100,000 having been spent on the grounds and a new stage and oak hayloft. On a balmy summer night it’s the ideal spot to enjoy an early picnic tea and a Shakespeare ‘T’ to round it off! The 2019 Shakespeare in the Great Barn season opens on Tuesday 28th May 2019, continuing throughout the summer until Thursday 5th September. Walking is simple, free, and one of the easiest ways to get more active, lose weight and become healthier. Sometimes overlooked as a form of exercise, walking briskly can help you build stamina, burn excess calories and make your heart healthier. Walking in beautiful countryside, inhaling plenty of fresh air, is a wonderful tonic for the soul. It has even been prescribed by doctors as a mental health aid. And walking with others gives you an incentive to get going. Walking for Health, run by local councils, is free to attend and suitable for people of all abilities, from beginners to more experienced walkers (progression walks). The walks are ideal for people who would like to improve their health by increasing their physical activity levels...

â&#x20AC;&#x153;...and discover the beautiful countryside and scenery the local area has to offer.â&#x20AC;? All walks are led by trained walk leaders who are there to offer information and support on the walk. The walks are graded for length and difficulty. New walkers will be asked to complete a brief health questionnaire before the start of the walk. You will need suitable footwear and comfortable clothing, as walks take place in all weathers. It is recommended that you carry a bottle of water and take along any medication that you may need.

Morning walks offered in the local area: Liss (Tues and Thurs); Petersfield (Wed); Purbrook (Wed); Rowlands Castle (Wed); Sheet (Fri); Waterlooville (Thurs); West Leigh (Fri); Whitehill & Bordon (Mon); Alice Holt Forest (Tues); Alton (Tues); Buriton (Mon); Denmead (Mon); Emsworth (Wed); Four Marks and Medstead (Fri); Havant (Tues); Hayling Island (Thurs); Headley (Wed); Liphook (Wed). Progression walks are the next step after Walking for Health. Co-ordinated by EHDC and Havant BC and led by Volunteer Leaders, they are over 90 minutes and provide longer walks for those who want an extra challenge. There are monthly walks from Petersfield on the last Monday of the month and Four Marks and Medstead on the last Friday.
