Autumn Sleep Tips As Autumn draws closer, we see the end of long, light nights and hot, stuffy bedrooms. But although one set of sleep challenges are on their way out, the change to cooler weather may be the start of a new set. Here’s The Sleep Council’s advice to make sure Autumn doesn’t leave you fatigued and frustrated: Shorter days can mean less exposure to sunlight. This means lower levels of vitamin D, increased feelings of fatigue and disruption of the sleep/ wake cycle. Make sure to get plenty of sun on your face by opening the curtains as soon as you wake up and going for a morning walk. While the crisp, chilly air can make it tempting to light the fire and crank up the heating, it’s actually best to keep the bedroom between 16 and 18 degrees Celsius. This is because the body struggles to bring its temperature back down when you get too hot, causing sleep disruption. Or if it’s too cold, the body will eventually wake you up – demanding extra layers of warmth and insulation! Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is a type of depression that alters melatonin levels, which play a role in the sleep/wake cycle and cause daytime sleepiness and
oversleeping. It is thought to affect one in 15 people between September and April in the UK each year. To re-establish a normal sleep schedule, exercise regularly, limit the use of gadgets before bed and keep bedtime/waking times consistent – even at weekends. Getting as much natural daylight as possible is also key, as it suppresses melatonin levels and boosts serotonin production! While it’s easy to stick to salads and lighter foods during warm Summer months, try to avoid the temptation to ‘comfort eat’ heavier meals as the temperatures drop – particularly close to bedtime. Too much food, too close to bedtime could cause you to wake-up from heartburn and indigestion. Also, decide whether your bed is still comfortable and supportive. If your bed is seven years old or more, then a new one could definitely be on the cards.

ALTON AND ALRESFORD SEPTEMBER 2019 LORD LIEUTENANT NIGEL ATKINSON VISITS NEW MUSEUM IN ALRESFORD The new Alresford Town Museum was visited by Lord Lieutenant Nigel Atkinson last month, a very high profile visitor! Robin Atkins, chairman of the New Alresford Town Trust welcomed Mr Atkinson, and his wife, Mrs Christine Atkinson, on their signing of a new Visitors Book for the Museum. Mr Atkins explained the history of the trust formed in 1890 to take over the responsibility of the Bailiff and Burgesses who had run Alresford from 1575. The museum had been started by the late Roy Robins in 2005, but following his death had remained dormant until NATT took it over in 2011. The museum now housed in the original engine room of the Old Fire Station will be extended to half the building in 2020. The main feature is the Merryweather Engine built in 1893 and owned by the Tichborne
Park Estates until the Hankin family acquired it in the 1960s. The Lord-Lieutenant inspected the engine and the museum’s current display. He said: “I was fascinated to hear about the town’s history and thrilled to see the old fire engine and other artefacts, all of which had been beautifully cared for and laid out.” Chris Pines observed that it was lovely to see how many people were enjoying themselves from so many political and social traditions.
ALRESFORD EEL HOUSE, NEEDS £3,000 FOR FURTHER RESTORATION WORK The Eel House, located in Alresford, is a unique piece of Hampshire history, in need of further restoration work to be restored to its former glory. The Eel House Restoration Fund has some £17,000 in its account, but the New Alresford Town Trust wants to raise another £3,000 to fully complete the project. It is seeking donations to help towards more repairs. New Alresford Town Trust and the town itself is asking for donations (however small) to be sent to NATT – c/o Old Fire Station, 54 Broad Street, Alresford, SO24 9AN, or contact Pam Stevens (01962 734861). The Eel House is unique, the only such building in Hampshire, with only one other in the UK. This year it had had 795 visitors in the four open days making the total number of visitors since opening of 8,948. Families work alongside trained parent volunteers who act as a listening ear, a role model for parenting and help with everyday issues. Parents are not judged but empowered with praise and encouragement to do their best for their families and give their children the best start in life. Home-Start Winchester and Districts works within a 12 mile radius of Winchester and in addition to a home-visiting service also runs two family groups and organises various family outings. We supported 55 families last year with a home-visiting volunteer and over 25 families through the family groups. The issues presented by our families has changed significantly over the years and now over 60% of parents suffer from mental illness and 40% have a child with disabilities. Home-Start is one of the leading family support charities in the UK.
