Giant Christmas Market PETERSFIELD Festival Hall will become a giant market place and boost a number of deserving charities for the annual Giant Christmas Charity Market.

More than 70 stalls will be set up in the main hall and Rose Room for the free admission event on Saturday December 1st which continues to support the Portsmouth Hospitals Rocky Appeal. A new ÂŁ3 million Rocky Appeal is being launched for advanced high-tech diagnostic services including cancer screening.

Other charities who hope to raise some Christmas cash will include the Rosemary Foundation hospice at home nurses, Cancer Research and The Royal Marsden Hospital.

Mince pies, gifts, vintage jewellery and cakes are some of the tempting items at the sale.

Plenty of collectables, bric-a-brac and bargain-priced household goods are on offer together with hand-knitted gifts, crafts, preserves and a giant book stall. Puzzles, toys and DVD’s will also be on sale.

The Christmas Market will be open from 9.30am to 3pm with refreshments served in the Rose Room and a raffle in the foyer.

Bring the outdoors in this winter with our step-by-step guide to creating a gorgeous homemade seasonal wreath.

This wreath is perfect as a winter wreath, or can be transformed into a festive wreath with the addition of Christmas decorations.

1. Create the base

First, you need a wreath base - choose from a wire ring or a fresh spruce wreath. You can make your own ring from thick wire or a metal coat hanger by bending it into a circle, or you might prefer to buy the base from a garden centre. Then get some natural twine to bind everything to your base - it holds much longer than glue.

2. Pick the theme

Decide how you will decorate your wreath. For a traditional look, use lots of lush, red colours with fake sprays of poinsettia, roses or berries, and some red ribbon. For a more modern look, go for sparkly baubles and glittery lights.

Or create a garden-themed wreath with a variety of berries and cones.

3. Attach the stems

To build your wreath, start by securing flower or foliage stems to the base using lightweight floral wire. Overlap the stems as you go to avoid gaps. Keep adding stems until the wreath base is fully covered.

4. Wrap the twine

Wrap some twine around the stems and tie, cutting away any extra string if you need to.

5. Add festive decorations (optional) Your wreath should be starting to take shape, so now you can add your decorations. These can be attached using twine. Add loops to baubles and other personal touches, then tie them on to your wreath.

6. Wrap up the wreath

By now your wreath should be looking wonderfully Wintery and this step is really just for you to trim any loose bits and make it look fantastic. You can tie pieces of ribbon to the wreath to add some extra texture or, if you want to stick with a garden theme, add some raffia.

Remembrance Day: The 100th anniversary The legacy of The First World War on Remembrance Sunday a century later The 11th of November is a significant day of history across the UK and the world. A century ago on this day was the end of The First World War, and each year in the lead-up to this event we buy and wear poppies as a sign of respect and support for The British Army, The Royal Navy and the Royal Air Force.

The first World War saw 65 million men from 30 countries fight, 750,000 of these are thought to be British, and over 188,000 were from British colonies. Initially, the British Government asked for 100,000 volunteers to join the army, and almost eight times this number applied, with over 250,000 lying about their age to get selected.

WW1 brought millions of deaths, and hundreds of thousands of injuries… but it also allowed for advancements in medicine, technology, and language. Many of the medical interventions and pioneering techniques have hugely influenced the medical procedures we use today, and The First World War was also the first time an aircraft was used in battle.

As for advancements in how we speak, ‘trench language’ gave us many of the modern slang words we use today such as ‘lousy’ and ‘crummy’.

Just like the symbol of the poppy growing from a baron field signifies hope, the progression in medicine, technology and language likewise brings a sense of pride following the war.

It’s time to take action against the health issues men are facing this November, whether you’re hosting an fundraiser, taking part in a sponsored sporting event, or of course growing a moustache!

November is a month dedicated to spreading awareness for men’s illness.

Globally, men are facing a health crisis that isn’t being discussed, from prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and mental health and suicide prevention… men are not talking about their health issues enough.

The Movember Foundation was set up in 2004 to encourage men to be more forthcoming about illness, and they are now the leading charity in changing the face of men’s health. Over the last 15 years, the Movember Foundation have funded over 1200 men’s health projects, and by 2030 they will reduce the number of men dying prematurely by 25%.

If you don’t fancy growing your facial hair, you can also get involved by running or walking 60 kilometres this month for the 60 men who are lost to suicide each day.

SIDELINED’ SUBJECTS ARE ‘STILL REALLY IMPORTANT’ SAYS HORNDEAN HEADTEACHER of students who took German got a 9-4 pass grade, with 83 per cent getting a 9-5 pass grade and 38 per cent a 9-7 grade. ‘That rubber stamps why he got the award – because of the government’s policy languages and the arts are being sidelined, but we work hard to make sure those subjects are still successful, and we celebrate how well students do in them.’

Subjects that can be shelved in comparison to those often considered more important are ‘still really important’, according to one headteacher in Horndean.

Horndean Technology College celebrated the success its pupils achieved in subjects like acting, dance, music and languages on GCSE results day. Julie Summerfield, headteacher at the school, said staff work hard to make sure such subjects are still of interest to students.

She said: ‘Our German teacher, Mr Surgeon, was named Best German Teacher of the Year by the German Embassy this year. ‘Ninety-four per cent

CLANFIELD CUBS GATHER TO COLLECT LITTER Clanfield Cubs spread out across the village on Thursday 22nd September to remove the litter from the streets. The club split into 4 groups, and then each group of the 8-10 year olds were guided around the village by volunteer leaders.

The Clanfield cubs borrowed equipment, and collected litter from the below areas:

On Thursday the 4th October, Four London Road bar in Horndean organised an event to raise money for Alzheimer’s. They held a ticket event which included a meal with their signature tapas and pizzas, and there was also a raffle, auction and wheel of fortune to help raise funds.

Four London Road donated 100% of the profits made that evening, with local businesses getting involved and donating prizes for the raffle, and the photographer of the evening giving their service free of charge.

It was a real eye opener for the cubs who were surprised at the type of litter found.

In total, the charity event raised a fantastic £7,732 for their cause, which will all go to the Alzheimer Society.

Four London Road host many events throughout the year, including gin tastings and brunches every Sunday between 10am and 2pm.
