EARLY SPRING LOVE FOR YOUR LAWN Spring: the season of awakening and new life, the blooming of fresh buds and reemerging beautiful colour. It can be a truly inspiring time that is invigorating to the senses.

Preparing your garden requires a little effort, but the result can be a gorgeous green space to be proud of. At GreenThumb Lawn Treatment Service we know from experience that a big effort in spring pays dividends. It’s now, more than any other time of the year, that specialist lawn care advice comes in handy. GETTING AHEAD - If you didn’t have your lawn aerated and scarified this winter, there might yet be just enough time to fit it in before we really start to hit the warmer, drier months. Regardless, now is definitely the time to start thinking about getting all the necessary nutrients into the lawn through the right spring/summer treatment programme. MOWING - The amount of lawn mowing required will naturally increase; GreenThumb recommends implementing a, regular mowing programme. Dry, sunny days are the best for lawn mowing. It’s important that mower blades are kept sharp or replaced when needed to avoid causing damage to the grass plant. Also, cutting the grass too short, too soon will weaken it, attracting unwanted weeds and moss. If possible, it is best for a lawn to be cut at least once a week, to a height of about 25mm (1”). A little maintenance in the form of consistent mowing will help train the grass to be stronger over time.

KEEP IT CLEAR - Another way to help a lawn through spring is to rake up any dead leaves and twigs from the lawn and cut back overhanging plants; this is because grass needs as much direct sunlight and air as possible to stay healthy and green. As the ground starts to warm, it’s a good time to repair bare patches that can appear over winter. To do so, carefully rake the patch to create a bed, sow the seeds with a little top-soil and don’t let them dry out; they will germinate in a few days (temperature permitting). World Book Day is a registered charity which aims to give every child and young person a book of their own. This year, the 23rd worldwide annual World Book Day celebrations will take place on the 5th March and will see children, teachers and parents from over 100 countries come together to appreciate reading.

Although the main aim of the celebrations is to encourage children to explore the pleasures of books and reading, World Book Day is a day where people of all ages have all come to know and love. EMSWORTH MARCH 2020 WEALD & DOWNLAND LIVING MUSEUM HITS OVER £500K FUNDRAISING MILESTONE Museum reaches over £500k of its £1m Heritage Endowment Fund target for the Golden Future Campaign. The start of 2020 marked 50 years since Weald & Downland Living Museum first opened its doors and it is celebrating with an ambitious fundraising campaign. Since the launch of the campaign last autumn, the Museum has already received a contribution of £250,000 for its Heritage Endowment Fund. Crucially, the generous legacy gift has been match-funded by the Heritage Fund (formerly the Heritage Lottery Fund) taking the total to over £500,000. Weald & Downland Living Museum is one of just fifteen national charities that has been awarded match-funding, which will help the Museum meet their £1m endowment target. In addition, £27,000 of contributions have been donated to the Heritage Endowment Fund by individuals, trusts and foundations, all of which will be match-funded. There has also been a generous donation from the Sargent Charitable Trust for the Museum’s 50 Fund.

Nicola Pratt, Fundraising & Development Manager, commented on the milestone: “The Golden Future Campaign is an ambitious project for Weald & Downland Living Museum, and reaching the halfway mark for our Heritage Endowment Fund is a huge step for the fundraising campaign. The funds raised will have a vast impact on the Museum for visitors, the local area and future generations.’’ The Golden Future Campaign runs throughout the 50th anniversary year in 2020 and will continue until the end of 2021 with a total fundraising target of £2m.
