Marie Curie needs donations and volunteers in Hampshire as its Great Daffodil Appeal collections return for the first time in two years.

End of life charity Marie Curie is urgently calling for donations and volunteers in Hampshire to help provide vital care and support to people facing the end of life, and their loved ones.

The charity is dependent on public donations so that its nurses can continue working on the frontline caring for people at the end of life in their own homes. Donations also support its Information and Support Line, which provides a listening ear to anyone dealing with any aspect of death, dying and bereavement.

During the Great Daffodil Appeal, the annual National Day of Reflection will take place. On 23 March, the charity is encouraging everyone to wear a daffodil pin and take a moment to show their support for the millions of people bereaved during the pandemic and remember the people we’ve lost.

Last year Marie Curie provided direct support to more than 69,000 people – a 15% rise on the previous year – which is more than ever before.

The charity is dependent on donations so that its nurses can continue caring for people at the end of life in their own homes.

Sally Sansom, Community Fundraiser for Hampshire, said: “We’re so excited that this year we’ll be dusting off our big yellow hats and getting back out there again to host our much-loved collections.”

Volunteers will be supporting the charity’s annual flagship fundraiser – the Great Daffodil Appeal – which was forced to cancel its public collections for the past two years due to the pandemic. This year collections are going ahead in Hampshire, and Marie Curie is urging new and existing supporters to come forward to show their support.

“Volunteering at a collection is not only a great way to support Marie Curie but also a chance to meet new people in your local community.”

March is Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month. Ovarian cancer is the UK’s deadliest gynaecological disease, but many women are unaware of the symptoms.

Early diagnosis saves lives, but many women are worried about contacting their GP for fear of coming into contact with the virus or for overburdening the NHS. However, GP surgeries are open, with many carrying out consultations over the phone or online.

The symptoms of ovarian cancer are: • Persistent bloating • Feeling full quickly and/or loss of appetite • Pelvic or abdominal pain • Urinary symptoms Other symptoms can include unexpected weight loss, a change in bowel habits and extreme fatigue.

Anyone experiencing these symptoms, and they are not normal for them, should contact their GP.

Target Ovarian Cancer works to improve early diagnosis, fund life-saving research and provide much-needed support to women with ovarian cancer. Target Ovarian Cancer says that the earlier a woman is diagnosed with ovarian cancer the more likely she will respond to treatment.

However, most women are diagnosed once the disease has already spread.

This Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month, we are urging readers to join forces to make sure that more women are diagnosed earlier to help save lives! It’s so vital that we keep raising awareness and funding research if we are going to create a better future for the thousands of women affected by the disease.

The Alan Titchmarsh Column He’s a brilliant presenter, accomplished gardener, talented novelist and all-round horticultural inspiration. This month, Alan Titchmarsh talks about how our gardens can move us to a place of peace.

While gardens mean different things to all of us, it’s when I venture into these tranquil spaces that I truly get a sense of their calming and healing power, and I find that hugely enriching.

Most gardens and landscapes naturally come with a real feeling of gentleness – from the choice of flowers and plants, to gentle sweeps and curves that guide the eye onwards, to a softness and subtlety that may be a world away from some of the physical or emotional struggles we are going through; and I feel it is this dramatic contrast that really transports someone back to a place of comfort, even if just for a little while.

What is also really important for me when I visit gardens at hospices and hospitals, is the reminder that these spaces are not just for those who are residents. They also give hope, clarity, peace

and a sense of calm to visiting families and, most importantly, the people who work there. Certainly, with everything that has happened over the past couple of years with Covid, and the realisation that we need to consider and protect workers and staff who look after us, I would like to think those on the frontline can wrestle back their own sense of contentment when soaking up the fresh air and beauty of a garden, where they can move away from a job that’s very hard and emotionally draining.

I would like to see more attention given to gardens and outdoor spaces in our health institutions, and in workspaces in general.

They are more important than we imagine. Simple sweeps of flowers, plants and foliage are inspiring; the sight of an olive tree can move our minds to far-off places; and we all know how calming a cascade of water can be. It’s all very peaceful and there’s nothing complicated or frenetic.
