D-Day

June will mark 75 years since the historic Normandy Landings, the largest amphibious assault in history.

At 4:00pm The Red Arrows will return for a display of speed and agility above Southsea Common.

On June 6th, 1944, an Allied invasion force of 156,000 troops landed in Normandy. Supporting the invasions were more than 7,000 ships and smaller vessels off the coast and 11,000 aircraft. In total, British, Commonwealth and Allied casualties (killed, wounded or missing) on D-Day numbered approximately 4,300.

At 6:25pm The Royal British Legion’s specially chartered ship, the MV Boudicca, will set sail from Portsmouth with 300 veterans to Normandy. HMS St Albans, a Type-23 Royal

The invasion established a crucial second front in the liberation of Europe from Nazi occupation, ultimately leading to victory for Allied Forces in 1945.

Portsmouth will be the focal point of the UK commemorations for D-Day 75 There will be a host of events taking place from June 5th - 9th, including the UK’s national event on June 5th. At 11:30am The D-Day 75 National Commemorative Event will take place on Southsea Common. Veterans will join today’s Armed Forces and VIPs for a BBC programme of live music, performance and flypasts. Large screens will be provided on the common for members of the public who wish to watch the event. At 12:45pm (approx) A Royal Navy frigate will fire a naval gun salute followed by a spectacular flypast of up to 25 historic and modern RAF aircraft including the Red Arrows and the iconic Spitfire.

Navy frigate, will escort the MV Boudicca along with four smaller Royal Navy vessels. Royal Navy ships docked in port will pay their respects, before the boat emerges into the Solent to be met by a flotilla of Royal Navy vessels which will sail past her in salute with sailors lining the decks. Members of the public are encouraged to line key vantage points to wave off the veterans as they retrace the journey they made in 1944. At 7:40pm (approx) The RAF’s Battle of Britain Memorial Flight will fly over Portsmouth to mark the departure of The Royal British Legion’s ship. A series of commemorative events and activities organised by Portsmouth City Council will take place from June 5th - 9th in the city, from concerts to film screenings, The Portsmouth Revival Festival and more. Chargrilled vegetable tacos with smoky salsa

Perfect for a healthy lunch – or spice up a family barbeque with this dish – packed with loads of your 5-a-day fruit and veg! Heat oven to 220C/200C fan/gas 7. Put the corn, red onion and pepper into a large shallow roasting tin and sprinkle with the cumin seeds and oil. Add the kiwi and tomato to one edge of the tin. Roast for 20 minutes. While the vegetables are cooking, mix 60ml water with the flour to create a dough. Knead until smooth, and then cut equally into four pieces and roll out each on a lightly floured surface into a 16cm round tortilla. Cover with a towel to prevent drying out.

Remove the cooked tomato and kiwi from the tray and put the vegetables back into the oven for a further 10 minutes. Remove the kiwi skin and scoop the flesh into a bowl with the tomato, garlic, half of the coriander, bouillon and paprika. Use a blender to blend this into a smooth salsa. Heat a non-stick frying pan, (no oil) and cook the tortillas one at a time for a minute on one side and around 10 seconds on the other, until you see them puffing up a little. Spread some salsa onto the tortillas, then top with cabbage and roasted veg, and scatter with the rest of the coriander.

You will need: 175g pack baby corn 1 large red onion, sliced (190g) 1 red pepper, deseeded and roughly chopped ½ tsp cumin seeds 2 tsp rapeseed oil 1 large ripe kiwi, halved lengthways (110g) 1 large tomato, halved 100g wholemeal flour, plus extra for rolling 1 large garlic clove 15g fresh coriander, chopped 1 tsp vegan bouillon powder ½ tsp smoked paprika 85g red cabbage, finely shredded

8 oz fresh strawberries, chilled, 1 ripe banana, peeled and frozen 200g frozen pineapple 1 (5.3 oz) container coconut Greek yogurt • 300ml-360ml unsweetened coconut milk Servings: 2 Prep Time: 10 minutes

Pulse strawberries in a food processor until well pureed. Add banana, pineapple, coconut Greek yogurt and the coconut milk to a blender. Pulse until well blended, adding an additional 60ml coconut milk if needed.

Pour the pineapple mixture into glasses filling about 1/3 full then add a spoonful or two of the strawberry mixture, swirl lightly with a knife then repeat twice more. Alternately, all ingredients can be blended together in a blender versus processing strawberries separately. Serve immediately.

The launch of new Odyssey Restaurant The rapid transformation of the four-star Holiday Inn Winchester’s internal public areas is well underway, with the official opening of their new Odyssey Restaurant, Bar and Pizzeria.

The restaurant is part of a £2.5 million major project to redevelop and refurbish the award-winning hotel and include a new Spa opening mid-July. This new contemporary styled space provides a large lounge comprising of a quiet workplace area and an entertainment media/fun relaxing area, as well as a new hotel reception and a To Go Café proudly serving Starbucks Coffee and light snacks. Marc Solarz continued: “The new restaurant menu will feature the very best of local produce and our head chef and his team have created many imaginative new dishes.” The AA Rosette Award winning team at the hotel have been working on the new menu

The busy city of Winchester was nominated by the Sunday Times as one of the best places to live in the UK, additionally the beautiful Meon Valley was also up there in ranks of top 101 places to live in Britain.
