World Book Day is a registered charity which aims to give every child and young person a book of their own. This year, the 23rd worldwide annual World Book Day celebrations will take place on the 5th March and will see children, teachers and parents from over 100 countries come together to appreciate reading.

Although the main aim of the celebrations is to encourage children to explore the pleasures of books and reading, World Book Day is a day where people of all ages have all come to know and love. Over the years, we have seen parents, grandparents, guardians and friends piece together magnificent (some not so much) costumes of their child’s favourite book character.

Undoubtedly though, this day may fill some parents with the slight dread, with the thought of scrambling a presentable costume together looming over us into the early hours of the night before the big day.

In today’s world, people are often consumed with technology that we forget how many benefits reading books can have for everyone. This month, the team at TDG are encouraging as many people as possible to reignite the reading flames inside us all! To do so here is a list of 5 benefits reading has below:

Ovarian cancer is the UK’s deadliest gynaecological disease, but many women are unaware of the symptoms. The charity, Target Ovarian Cancer says that the earlier a woman is diagnosed with ovarian cancer the more likely she will respond to treatment.

MEON VALLEY MARCH 2020 SAVE THE CHILDREN PETERSFIELD FESTIVAL HALL The Petersfield branch of Save the Children raised a staggering £50k last year for disadvantaged children in the UK and throughout the world.

This year the aim is to top that figure through a full programme of fundraising events kicking off with the Big Sale which has grown into a hugely popular annual shopping extravaganza taking over the Petersfield Festival Hall for two days at the beginning of April. Following an evening fashion event showcasing some of the clothes modelled by volunteers, the hall is filled with designer, new, and good- as-new quality clothing which is sold on a 50/50 basis. Petersfield is one of the oldest branches of Save the Children in the country. It is also the highest fundraiser – remarkable for a small market town.

Projects funded recently include an initiative in Manchester supporting parents with their children’s learning and development at home during their early years.

Also, Save the Children’s Stop the War on Children campaign is helping children in conflict zones throughout the world.

CHARITY FORD OPEN FISHING FESTIVAL - MEON VALLEY LIONS It was an extremely cold, wet and windy morning that greeted the Meon Valley Lions, as they turned out to organise the 45th Charity Ford Open Fishing Festival, on Weston Shore.

In its heyday, over two hundred fishermen took part in this fishing festival and the pitches extended from Weston Shore in the west, right round to the Hamble in the east.

The Ford transit plant has since closed, but Peter Oates and members of the Ford Sports and Social Club have worked hard with the support of the Transport and General Workers Union, to keep the competition alive. It is still a popular event amongst the sea-angling community and 79 braved the weather again this year.

There were some fabulous raffle prizes so it made it all worthwhile for those who attended. At the conclusion of the day, the event raised £891.02, a sum the Lions will now round up to £1,000 for donation to The Rose Road Association.

It’s a tradition that we channel the proceeds of the Fishing Festival to this deserving charity and this year’s contribution takes the total collected through the fishing festival down the years, to in excess of £45,000. The cheque will be presented by the Lions President to representatives of The Rose Road Association at a ceremony in the Good Companions Public House, Eastleigh in March.
