Autumn Sleep Tips As Autumn draws closer, we see the end of long, light nights and hot, stuffy bedrooms.

But although one set of sleep challenges are on their way out, the change to cooler weather may be the start of a new set. Here’s The Sleep Council’s advice to make sure Autumn doesn’t leave you fatigued and frustrated: Shorter days can mean less exposure to sunlight. This means lower levels of vitamin D, increased feelings of fatigue and disruption of the sleep/ wake cycle. Make sure to get plenty of sun on your face by opening the curtains as soon as you wake up and going for a morning walk.

While the crisp, chilly air can make it tempting to light the fire and crank up the heating, it’s actually best to keep the bedroom between 16 and 18 degrees Celsius. This is because the body struggles to bring its temperature back down when you get too hot, causing sleep disruption.

Or if it’s too cold, the body will eventually wake you up – demanding extra layers of warmth and insulation!

Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is a type of depression that alters melatonin levels, which play a role in the sleep/wake cycle and cause daytime sleepiness and

oversleeping. It is thought to affect one in 15 people between September and April in the UK each year. To re-establish a normal sleep schedule, exercise regularly, limit the use of gadgets before bed and keep bedtime/waking times consistent – even at weekends. Getting as much natural daylight as possible is also key, as it suppresses melatonin levels and boosts serotonin production!

While it’s easy to stick to salads and lighter foods during warm Summer months, try to avoid the temptation to ‘comfort eat’ heavier meals as the temperatures drop – particularly close to bedtime. Too much food, too close to bedtime could cause you to wake-up from heartburn and indigestion.

Also, decide whether your bed is still comfortable and supportive. If your bed is seven years old or more, then a new one could definitely be on the cards.

BAT CONSERVATION GETS A BOOST IN BISHOPS WALTHAM AND TITCHFIELD Protected species of bats have been given new homes and their old ones preserved on the roofs of two co-operative convenience stores.

After not just one, but two leading actors pulled out of a performance at the West Meon Music Festival, to be held from 13 to 15 September, the Primrose Piano Quartet, which founded the festival back in 2011, have revamped the event’s Saturday evening concert to avoid any further upheavals.

The Co-op stores in Bishop’s Waltham and Titchfield have both had ‘Bat Boxes’ secured to them to help protect the local bat population.

“Enoch Arden” is being replaced by Elgar’s “Piano Quintet” – a work in keeping with the concert’s theme of “music and melodrama” as it was inspired by stories of ghostly happenings at Brinkwells, the Sussex house where Elgar was living when he wrote the piece in 1918. The first half of the programme is unchanged, thanks to actor Nicholas Jones – most recently seen in The Crown and The Worst Witch – who lives in West Meon and is a regular festival attendee. He will read Edgar Alan Poe’s story “The Masque of the Red Death” which André Caplet interpreted in his tone poem ‘Legende” set for harp and string quartet in 1922.

According to the Bat Conservation Trust, in the UK, bat populations have declined considerably over the last century and are still under threat. Bats play vital roles in the environment, like helping to pollinate flowers and spread seeds. They also work as pest control, by eating various species of insects.

Southern Co-op has made a commitment to long term sustainability and launched a five year plan earlier this year to continue to enhance our natural environment.

On the Titchfield store, a bat tile was installed in the roof which was modified to have a hole big enough for a long-eared bat to get into.

As in previous years the festival will also be raising funds for the Petersfield-based Rosemary Foundation which provides a hospice at home service throughout the surrounding areas.
