Drawing on more than a decade of experience in the motor trade, Matt Bartlett launched Auto Matt at Rake Industries near Petersfield in March last year.

Matt started at a local car sales garage, helping in their workshop, before studying NVQ 1,2,3 motor vehicle mechanics at Chichester College. During his time at local Citroen and Peugeot dealers, Matt gained an insight into the latest new car technologies.

How to make...

1 First, heat the oven to 200C/180C fan/

gas 6 and put a baking sheet on the middle shelf.

Sprinkle some flour over your work surface and over the pastry ball and roll it out to the thickness of two ÂŁ1 coins. Stamp the pastry with an 8cm cutter, re-rolling the trimmings to make 12 rounds. Gently push the rounds of pastry into the bun tin.

Spoon 1 heaped tsp of the custard into each pastry case, followed by the mincemeat on top. Add the final 1 tbsp sugar to the smaller bowl of crumb mix.

Pinch it together to make bigger clumps and mound it on top of the mincemeat.

Slide the bun tin on top of the baking sheet and bake for 15 mins until golden brown and the custard and mincemeat are starting to bubble.

Cool for 15 mins, then carefully lift the pies onto a rack and leave to cool.

Will keep for 2 days in an airtight tin.

2 Next, cut the butter into small cubes,

sift the flour into a large mixing bowl and add a pinch of salt. Using your fingers, rub the butter and flour together until it resembles breadcrumbs. Add in 2 tbsp of the sugar then gather a heap (85g) of the crumbs into a smaller bowl and set aside.

3 Using two small bowls, carefully crack

the egg on the side of one bowl. Let the white drain away from the yolk into one bowl and put the yolk into the other bowl. Beat the egg yolk, then add it to the bigger bowl of butter and flour and mix.

4 Then with your hands, knead the pastry

a few times until smooth and squeeze the crumbs together to make a ball.

Charity Chair Rachael Ross says, “Our charity is the largest provider of free specialist services for families and professionals in the UK and we are uniquely managed by full and part time professional volunteers. This enables us to keep overheads low and offer an extensive range of support from the point of diagnosis through to young adulthood.

We are a self-funding charity and very much welcome support from the community and opportunities to team up with local organisations in positive partnership.”

Portsmouth DSA provides essential support, friendship and specialist services for children with Down syndrome and their families across South Hants and beyond. The charity also trains thousands of health professionals and school staff every year. For the fourth year, we will be helping you to help your neighbours locally – and we’re excited to be adding a New Toy Appeal too!

HOW TO TAKE PART? It’s simple.

REVERSE ADVENT FOOD CALENDAR All you need is a sturdy box/basket, and then each day leading up to Christmas you add a new item. The idea is that you add 24 items, just like an advent calendar.

WHAT TO INCLUDE? When planning your box, think of staple foods that will feed a family. Items such as tinned and jarred food (including meat and meat pies), pasta, rice, biscuits, UHT milk, baby formula, fruit juice, and anything else that has a long shelf life (no fresh goods please).

NEW TOY APPEAL If you would like to buy and donate a New Child’s Toy for Christmas – please purchase the toy – try not to buy toys that need expensive batteries. Please do not gift wrap the toy – we can do that nearer the time – once we agree the child’s age group. But feel free to supply gift wrap if you would like. Please note we can only accept new toys.

If you can not get out of the house but would like to contribute – we can accept a donation and shop for you – just contact us for details.

Our Yearly Round-Up! Hello Human Friends, it’s Barney here, the TDG office dog.

In light of what has been an undoubtedly strange and tricky year for many of us, I wanted to take a moment to look back on what the TDG Team have achieved this year and celebrate the positives - because we’ve done plenty during 2020!

Back in April, we celebrated our 15th Birthday! For the past 15 years our objective has always been the same; to help support, drive and grow the community and the 100’s of brilliant local businesses within it, whilst communicating, engaging and assisting our fabulous local readers. Amazingly, there has only been ONE month when we couldn’t produce our clever little magazines over the past 15 years.

We are always proud to support local and national charities, who work so hard to better our lives. With BIG thanks to your help and donations, we have continued to help local community projects including local food banks, sewing and delivering scrubs for the NHS, making activity packs for people who were most isolated as a result of the pandemic and for this month, continuing with our annual reverse advent calendar boxes.

We kept you entertained with competitions, puzzles, quizzes, crafts and mouth-watering

recipes. We hope you enjoyed our articles full of tips for gardening, exercising, mental health and more.

On the business side of things, we launched two NEW quarterly magazines to distribute into areas such as Chichester, Haslemere, Grayshott and Hindhead – to help businesses target more customers. Our bi-monthly luxury lifestyle sister magazine, Beautiful South, celebrated its 4th Birthday in May AND we launched our Umbrella company, Hampshire Media Group, so that all our services, including our Leaflet Design, Print and Distribution service, can be found under one roof at www.hampshiremediagroup.co.uk.

And all whilst doing this, I’ve managed to squeeze in lots of naps, treats and walkies!
