Giant Christmas Market Petersfield Festival Hall will become a giant market place and boost a number of deserving charities including a major hospital appeal for the annual Giant Christmas Charity Market. More than 70 stalls will be set up in the main hall and Rose Room for the free admission event on Saturday December 7th which continues to support the Portsmouth Hospitals Rocky Appeal. A new £5million appeal for a cancer research and innovation centre is being launched to give advanced treatment at the Queen Alexandra Hospital, Cosham. Other charities who hope to raise some Christmas cash will include the Rosemary Foundation hospice at home nurses and The Royal Marsden Cancer fund. Mince pies, gifts, vintage jewellery and cakes are some

of the tempting items at the sale. Plenty of collectables, bric-a-brac and bargain-priced household goods are on offer together with hand-knitted gifts, freshly baked treats, crafts, preserves and a giant book stall. DIABETES: PROTECT YOUR FAMILY WORLD DIABETES DAY - 14TH NOVEMBER Thursday 14th November is World Diabetes Day and this year, it’s focusing on Families and Diabetes. The International Diabetes Federation (IDF) is an umbrella organisation of over 230 national diabetes associations in 170 countries. They raise awareness of the impact that diabetes has on the family and promote the role of the family in the management, care, prevention and education of diabetes. This year, the IDF is encouraging families to learn more about the warning signs of diabetes. Their research conducted in 2018 discovered that parents would struggle to spot this serious life-long disease in their own children. Despite the majority of people surveyed having a family member with diabetes, an alarming four-in-five parents would have trouble recognising the warning signs one-in-three wouldn’t spot them at all! There are currently 1 in 2 people who live with diabetes that remain undiagnosed. But being left untreated or unmanaged, diabetes can lead to life-changing complications including blindness, amputation, kidney failure, heart attack and stroke. Type 2 diabetes accounts for around 90% of all people living with diabetes.

Although it mostly affects adults, it is now increasingly being seen in children and adolescents. However, unlike type 1 diabetes, type 2 diabetes can be prevented through simple life choices such as a healthy diet and increased physical activity. The first step to preventing type 2 diabetes is knowing your risk. This World Diabetes Day, the IDF is encouraging everyone to learn about their risk of type 2 diabetes through a simple online test or questionnaire. Their goal is to have at least 1 million people around the world screened for type 2 diabetes by the end of November 2019 through their #Test2Prevent campaign. So here’s how you can get involved: Learn about your risk of type 2 diabetes through IDF’s online risk assessment here: www.idf.org/type-2-diabetes-riskassessment/ Share the test on social media to encourage others to learn about their risk. SJF Roofing What you’ll need: • Pinecones (find them outside or buy some from a local craft shop) • White Acrylic Paint • White PVA Glue • Large Grain Silver Glitter • Silver Cord (if you plan to hang them) • 2 x Bowls (larger than a pinecone)

Tired of putting up the same Christmas decorations every year? Well then try making our Festive Frosty Pinecone's! This classic craft is a beautiful way to add to your existing decorations and create the illusion that jack frost has been to visit. It's perfect for all the family to do on a winters day and is also super cheap and cheerful since the pinecones are free (as long as you find them outside) – result!

Crafting the craft itself:

1. In a bowl, mix the white acrylic paint and PVA glue to an approximate 60/40 ratio.

Before 2. Plop a pinecone into the bowl and roll it around with your hands or a fork (depending on how messy you like to get) until its edges are evenly covered from top to bottom, leaving the inner parts paint-free. 3. Pour a shallow layer of glitter into the second bowl and roll the pinecone in it, in a similar as before. Then place the pinecone to the side on a non-stick surface / old chopping board and repeat with the rest. 4. Leave to dry for a few hours before lightly tapping them over a bowl to catch any loose glitter. 5. If you’re hanging your pinecones, attach the silver cord by simply tying some thread round an After edge and gluing it down with PVA or a hot glue gun if available.

Finally, decorate away! Whether you hang your Festive Frosty Pinecones on the Christmas tree or bunch them together to make a merry display, they're sure to add some sparkle to your home this winter. Stuart spent 37 years in the Royal Navy, including several commands of warships around the world. What you’ll need: • Pinecones (find them outside or buy some from a local craft shop) • White Acrylic Paint • White PVA Glue • Large Grain Silver Glitter • Silver Cord (if you plan to hang them) • 2 x Bowls (larger than a pinecone)

Crafting the craft itself:

1. In a bowl, mix the white acrylic paint and PVA glue to an approximate 60/40 ratio.

2. Plop a pinecone into the bowl and roll it around with your hands or a fork (depending on how messy you like to get) until its edges are evenly covered from top to bottom, leaving the inner parts paint-free. 3. Pour a shallow layer of glitter into the second bowl and roll the pinecone in it, in a similar as before. Then place the pinecone to the side on a non-stick surface / old chopping board and repeat with the rest. 4. Leave to dry for a few hours before lightly tapping them over a bowl to catch any loose glitter. 5. If you’re hanging your pinecones, attach the silver cord by simply tying some thread round an edge and gluing it down with PVA or a hot glue gun if available.

Each year, The Royal British Legion encourages the nation to come together to honour and remember the sacrifices made by the Armed Forces community. For 2019, the British Legion encourages everyone to 'Remember Together' to commemorate the service and sacrifice that many friends, allies, and Commonwealth nations made alongside Britain in defence of its freedoms, values, and way of life. There are no restrictions on when you remember, but the main focus of Remembrance in the United Kingdom is in November, during Armistice Day and Remembrance Sunday. The Armistice, an agreement to end the fighting of the First World War, began at 11am on 11th November 1918. “Armistice” is Latin for “to stand (still) arms”. To this day we mark Armistice Day with a Two Minute Silence at 11am on the 11th day of the 11th month. During November, millions will mark their remembrance with the Poppy symbol. This is because, during WW1, vast amounts of land was blasted, bombed and fought over repeatedly. Previously beautiful landscapes turned to mud, creating bleak and barren scenes where little or nothing could grow. However, there was a notable and striking exception to the bleakness; the bright red Flanders poppies. These resilient flowers flourished in the middle of so much chaos and destruction, growing in the thousands upon thousands.

In the spring of 1915, shortly after losing a friend in Ypres, a Canadian doctor, Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae wrote his now famous poem after feeling so moved at the sight of poppies growing in battle-scarred fields. PETERSFIELD PHONE BOX LIBRARY In College Street, Petersfield, Hampshire, GU31 4AF, a brilliant member of the public has kindly refurbished Petersfield’s Phone Box Library by cleaning it up, dusting away its cobwebs and spiders, and cleaning up the existing books as well as adding new additions for people to use and enjoy.

You can expect a vast array of genres, with a wide variety of books for all ages, from adults to selections of children’s books. New and popular books will be added on a regular basis. The Library has a ‘take a book, leave a book’ policy, so there should be something different every time you pop by! The phone box will also have themed boxes to rummage through and enjoy themed boxes for various times of the year (Easter, Halloween, Christmas). This phone box is for all the community to use, love and watch over.
