In your edition of The Directory for July we focus our attention on 70 years of the NHS, which was established in England on the 5th July 1948. At some point in our lives we have all relied on the service of our excellent health system, so our article on its anniversary concentrates on the people behind the organisation and the brilliance it provides.

Elsewhere we have a full-page feature on the importance of protecting our environment by making the Solent area free from single use plastic. Locally, volunteers at the Final Straw Solent do an admirable job at engaging businesses by making their mark against the problem disposable plastic is having.

YEARS OF THE 1948-2018 The National Health Service turns 70 this month presenting the perfect opportunity to celebrate the achievements of one of the nation’s most loved institutions. Established on 5th July 1948, by Aneurin Bevan, who was a Welsh Labour Party politician, the NHS has transformed the health and wellbeing of the nation and has become the envy of the world.

If it wasn’t for radical thinking and a founding principal of free high-quality health care for all, the creation of the NHS may have never taken place.

The NHS is a service we can all be proud of. The people behind the institution have delivered impressive medical advances and improvements to public health. As a result, we can all expect to live longer lives.

Due to the hard work and sheer determination of our NHS it has all but eradicated diseases such as polio and diphtheria and has lead new treatments such as the world’s first liver, lung and heart transplant.

Britain’s NHS continues to drive innovations in patient care, including mechanical thrombectomy to improving stroke survival, surgical breakthroughs such as hand transplants, and bionic eyes to restore sight.

Importantly, the NHS wouldn’t have developed into what we see today if it wasn’t for the skill, compassion and dedication of staff. Let’s not forget the volunteers’ charities and communities that support too.

The list of breakthroughs is endless, and this month’s national celebration will delve into the institutions excellence and its future. Play your part in supporting the NHS by volunteering, raising cash for local NHS charities, or by taking steps to take care of your own health and use the services wisely.

We’ve all seen the headlines about the huge problems single-use plastics are having on the environment. People across the nation are continually being urged to act against the use of the synthetic material.

But what is the campaigning all about?

Around 8 million tonnes of plastic are poured into the ocean every year. These are broken down into extremely small pieces of plastic debris known as microplastics.

Microplastics pollute the environment as a result from the disposal and breakdown of consumer products and industrial waste.

This is harmful to wildlife, the environment, and potentially us. By working to reduce the use of single-use plastics we are steadily protecting our environment.

Locally, voluntary groups are having a huge impact on the attitude people are having towards their use of plastic.

The Final Straw Solent, now working with more than 100 local businesses, are doing an excellent job at making them fight

against the use of single-use plastics.

Port Solent has pledged to swap plastic for paper, businesses in Emsworth have replaced plastic bags for environmentally friendly carriers, and Havant Borough Council is encouraging residents to make swaps.

Bianca Carr, head volunteer at The Final Straw Solent, says working with local people will help the group achieve its goals.

She said: “Collaborating with local businesses such as Port Solent will be incredibly successful and will help us to achieve our goals of one day making the Solent area, at the very least, free from single-use plastic straws.”

Playing your part in making the Solent area plastic free can be achieved simply by making some straightforward swaps; replace your plastic water bottles for reusable materials; decline straws when offered – unless there is a paper alternative; avoid excessive food packaging, for example, purchase loose vegetables.

OLDER PERSONS INFORMATION FAIR SET TO RETURN FOR ANOTHER YEAR AT HAVANT LOCATION A popular event which informs residents about the range of services available across the area is to be launched at a central Havant location this summer.

The Community Groups and Older Persons Information Fair, which last year attracted more than 1,000 people at its then Hayling Island location, allows people to understand more about community groups and clubs.

The Fair will be held at the Meridian Centre on Friday 3 August from 10am to 2pm. This year it is expected to feature around 40 exhibitors – those confirmed as attending include Hampshire Police, Hayling Island Choir, Staunton Farm and Country Park, Dementia Friends, Churchers Solicitors, Pensions Advisory Service, Barclays and Hampshire County Council. Alan Mak,

MP for the area, says the popularity with residents initiated the decision to expand the event. He said: “My first two Older Persons Information Fairs were big successes and proved popular with residents, so I decided to expand the event to include some of our excellent community groups.

“Combined with an excellent new central location in the Meridian Centre, it should be a great day showcasing the very best of what is on offer for residents in the community while also signposting essential services.”

Like previous years, there will be a focus on providing advice to senior citizens. Older people, carers, family, neighbours and friends can speak to a range of specialist organisations, businesses, government agencies and community groups serving to help older people.

There will be the chance to ask questions about health, wellbeing or benefits in addition to gathering information about activities. Rory Massey, operations manager of Age UK Portsmouth, expressed his delight about the return of the Fair, saying: “Last

RAISING CASH FOR LOCAL CHARITIES THROUGH FUN COMMUNITY COFFEE EVENTS The recently appointed Mayor of Havant played host at his first coffee morning in support of charity last month.

The coffee mornings and other events due to take place over the forthcoming year aim to be fun, with arts and craft stalls, a raffle, refreshments and the opportunity to meet new people as well as the Mayor, all while raising money.

Councillor Wade says the coffee mornings are an ideal way to bring the community together to raise cash for good causes.

He said: “These mornings are a great opportunity for me to meet with members of our community, whether they are popping in for a quick coffee or staying to enjoy the friendly atmosphere. I’m really excited to be holding these coffee mornings as Mayor and hope to see as many people as possible.”
