Did you know that on 4th December UK Ambassador to Spain, Simon Manley, wrote an open letter to UK citizens living in Spain, following the EU’s approval of the Withdrawal Agreement on 25th November. In his letter, Mr Manley urged all UK citizens living in Spain to register with the Spanish authorities (at the Oficina de Extranjeros or at a designated local police station) in order to be legally resident here, if they haven’t already done so. He added that it is the “current obligation” of all foreigners living in Spain to do so anyway. At the time of writing, the UK parliament and EU parliament hadn’t voted on the agreement and Brits living in Spain and the rest of the EU27 continue to be in limbo as to what the future holds for them. We don’t know whether there will be a deal or not and there is mounting pressure on the UK government to allow the people to vote on the final deal in a People’s Vote, or even hold a second referendum. While Theresa May seems to be determined that the latter two options are not going to happen and in the event of there being no deal our existing rights, which appear to be broadly protected by the agreement, she has suggested that citizens’ rights would be “watered down.” This is a timely reminder that deal or no deal, if we want to continue to call Spain our home, we need to make sure that we have done everything we can to make our status here legal. To read the full letter from the ambassador as well as follow the links to the Oficina de Extranjeros information and advice for UK citizens living in Spain visit: www.gov.uk/government/news/an-open-letter-from-hma-simonmanley-to-british-nationals-living-in-spain

CONTEMPORARY PIZAZZ FOR YOUR NEW KITCHEN So you’ve decided to fit a beautiful contemporary-style kitchen but with so many exciting design ideas in the showrooms, what will you choose for your kitchen design statement? These ideas might help you when making that all-important choice. Contemporary kitchens are visually cool, sleek and clean. Uncluttered surfaces flow seamlessly, leading the eye effortlessly through the kitchen, while flush, handle-free doors that silently glide open and closed provide practical storage solutions. Islands were must-haves in the ‘90s and are still popular but not as essential, mainly due to the limited space in many of today’s small kitchens that makes them less practical. If you opt for an island, today’s slick, contemporary styles generally echo your accent colours to tie everything together. If you are strapped for space, keeping the area below the island relatively cupboard free or adding a slight overhang to your surface makes a relaxed eating space for breakfast or snacks.

Colour and texture White is still the most popular colour in contemporary kitchen designs, but that’s not to say you aren’t free to experiment a little with your unique take on contemporary, so don’t be afraid to add a splash of colour or texture by incorporating wood, marble, silestone or stainless steel. As long as you keep to the overall simplicity in lines and style, you can successfully add character through bold colour for warmth, wood for richness, or steel for a more industrial look. It’s key to come up with your own contemporary design statement – a good kitchen designer will be able to help you keep your ideas on track. As well as on your kitchen cabinets, walls and surfaces, other great places to add colour and/or pattern are backsplashes, light fittings, countertop accessories and even the floor. A clever combination of smart, dark wood, alongside high gloss units in an open-plan kitchen can create a stylish, natural finish, at the same time as adding all-important character. Glass Glass often features in sophisticated contemporary kitchens, 20

especially on cabinet doors and backsplashes. If you’re not a fan due to its transparency, there are many opaque glass versions to choose from. Glass on cabinet doors is ideal for displaying your favourite items and saves you dusting them. But the knock on effect is you have to keep them tidy. If you don’t want to spend time re-arranging things all the time, opt for frosted glass as it will reduce them to silhouettes. Aside from aesthetics, the main advantage of glass is that it opens out the space while maintaining a gorgeous minimalist look. If you’re looking to make a small kitchen look bigger, glass visually opens things up, giving a more spacious feel. Used as a backsplash, glass is a favourite and can often be white, transparent or coloured in contemporary kitchens. The colour is painted on the back of a clear glass sheet so that it won’t peel or chip. The absence of joints or grouting makes glass about as wonderfully seamless and visually clean as you can get. De Cotta Law - Issues with Local Tax Bills This year we have been receiving notifications on behalf of some of our clients, from the Town Hall and ‘Patronato de Recaudación’, regarding unpaid local tax bills (IBI, rubbish and Vehicle Entrance), especially for the Nerja and Torrox areas. There appear to be several reasons for this, one being that the ‘Catastro’ periodically update their records and revalue properties without prior warning. Meaning that they then issue a backdated IBI bill with the amount of IBI owing based on the updated valuation of the property; they are only allowed to issue a backdated bill for up to four years previous. Another reason is that the direct debits are being cancelled because of insufficient funds in the account, or due to a change of title name on the bills, or because the ‘Patronato de Recaudación’ does not have the property owner’s NIE number on record (they cannot issue any bill without this information). If the bank rejects a payment, the direct debit will be automatically cancelled and the ‘Patronato de Recaudación’ is under no obligation to inform or notify anyone. If a direct debit is arranged before a change of title is actioned, the direct debit will be cancelled once the bill is in the name of the new owner; the title of the bill and the bank account holder cannot differ. Again, the ‘Patronato de Recaudación’ is under no obligation to inform or notify anyone of the cancellation, therefore, it is better to arrange the direct debits once the change of title has been actioned. The direct debits cannot be rearranged until all pending local tax bills are paid. In order to try and avoid this from happening in the future, it is imperative that property owners ensure that there are sufficient funds in their bank account, and that they monitor whether or not

the automatic payments are being deducted from the designated bank account.

MECHANICS

It is also important to mention that the ‘Patronato de Recaudación’ recently experienced some administrative issues, and all IBI bills were issued late this year. There have also been issues with the local tax bills for some areas of Torrox, in that the majority have not been printed correctly. This means that these bills need to be checked and confirmed with the ‘Patronato de Recaudación’ before payment. If property owners have any doubts about the payment of the local tax bills (particularly in the Torrox area), or they are not receiving the bills in their name (or any at all), please contact Helen Bacon direct by email: helenbacon@ decottalaw.net or call +34 952 527 014.

OUT OUTAND ANDABOUT ABOUT

CANILLAS DE ALBAIDA

The origin of Canillas de Albaida can be traced as far back as the 13th Century. However, it wasn’t until the 17th Century that it really started to grow, when two chapels, or ‘ermitas’, were built. Unlike many of the villages of the Axarquía, Canillas de Albaida’s name comes from Latin, rather than Arabic: Canillas deriving from Cannula (little reed) and Albaida from Albus meaning white. As such, it is said that the village got its name from the abundance of white flowers that surrounded it. Another reminder of the village’s Roman history is the Roman bridge which crosses the Turvilla river to the south of Canillas. While parts of it are original, the bridge has been restored on a number of occasions to strengthen it and make it safe to cross. The area is a haven for nature-lovers and hikers and the most well documented walk is that of the fábrica de la Luz – Cerro Lucero, which winds along pathways from the village, following the Turvilla river and climbs steadily up from 576 metres above sea level, which is the altitude of the town itself, to the Cerro Lucero which stands at 1,779 metres. It is also possible to camp in the area. This is just one of the many walks that start from Canillas de Albaida and the well-stocked tourist information office can offer a number of itineraries, which include trails that connect the nearby villages of Cómpeta and Árchez.

The first fábrica de luz de Canillas de Albaida was constructed in 1915 and provided Canillas, Corumbela, Árchez, Daimalos and Arenas with electricity. It functioned until 1920 and after the Civil War it was turned into a flour mill. In 1959 it was moved to its existing location, to the Turvilla river, to the north of the village. As well as providing electricity for lights, the plant also supplied a sawmill and olive press. However, the electricity produced wasn’t enough for the village and power cuts were frequent. In 1945, it was sold to a bank and subsequently to energy company, Sevillana, which owned it until 1966. Legend has it that the Sevillana van also served as transport for members of an underground resistance movement during the Franco era! The building is now a ruin, but the area is used for camping, barbeques and for hikers walking the route. In the village itself, the attractive square is home to the modern town hall building, the Nuestra Señora del Rosario church, a small hotel and restaurant as well as a fountain. The narrow streets that lead up to the square are all lined with the blue flowerpots, giving Canillas de Albaida a unique charm. There are a further two chapels in the village; Ermita de San Anton to the south-west and Ermita de Santa Ana to the north, at the beginning of the track which leads to the Fábrica de la Luz. The village forms part of the sun and wine route and is surrounded by olive trees and muscatel grape vines. Local sweet wine is widely available in bars and restaurants and some places will sell you a bottle too. Among its population of approximately 800 people, there are a number of British, Scandinavians, Dutch, German and French people living there. As well as the restaurant on Plaza del Rosario, there are a number of options for food as well as places to sleep and a couple of small but well-stocked supermarkets. Just down the road from Canillas de Albaida, in Árchez, Polish couple, David and Kinga, run the Meson Mudejar restaurant, which offers vegan foods from around the world. while you eat, or any time from Tuesday to Sunday for lunch of dinner. They also offer accommodation in the form of five double bedrooms. See advert on page 28 for further details. Of course, like all villages in the Axarquía, Canillas de Albaida has a full calendar of events all year round, starting in January with a local fiesta in honour of one of the village’s patron saints; San Antón (Saint Anthony). Carnival takes place in February and they have their own Easter week events. August sees the village’s annual fair and in October a Cultural Week coincides with a day to celebrate the other patron saint; Our Lady of the Rosario (Nuestra Señora del Rosario). Over Christmas, the village holds a midnight mass (Misa del Gallo) on 24th December, where the baby Jesus is dressed and on 25th there is a Christmas raffle. The tourist information office, at the beginning of the village, near the sports centre and bus stop, is open from 11am until 2pm every day except Tuesdays and Thursdays. It is run by volunteers, all of whom are foreign residents who live in the village and who speak English, among other languages. Maps and itineraries for the walks are written in English, Spanish, German and French and the office is extremely well-stocked with plenty of information about the local area. There is a bus that runs from Malaga to Canillas de Albaida, which goes via Torre del Mar, Algarrobo, Sayalonga and Cómpeta and runs five times a day during the week and twice at weekends. The service is operated by Loymer buses and a timetable can be found in the tourist information centre or by emailing torredelmargrupoloymer.com or phoning 952 541 113. A map of the village is also available at the tourist information centre and can also be downloaded from the town hall website: www.canillasdealbaida.es Written by Jennie Rhodes

WELLBEING Reiki Frequently Asked Questions I am a Reiki Master Teacher with over 10 years experience and I am very passionate about the benefits of Reiki. I found Reiki many years ago when I was struggling to cope with physical illness as well as anxiety and depression. It helped me so much I decided to become a Reiki Practitioner myself. I then went on to complete my Masters and Teacher level qualification and, as well as being a practitioner, I now teach Reiki to others. I find a lot of people do not know what Reiki actually is or what to expect during a treatment so I have put together some frequently asked questions. What is Reiki? Reiki is a type of energy healing that originates from Japan. The Reiki practitioner channels energy and transmits this through their hands to the client. Reiki is a scientifically proven method of energy healing and is used extensively throughout the world

by many therapists and healthcare professionals. What can I expect during a Reiki Session? After your initial consultation you will get comfortable on the bed, wrapped up nice and warm in cosy blankets and I will check the energy centres of your body. I then play gentle music and talk you through a guided relaxation technique to help you relax your body and mind. I then move from your head travelling down the body and gently placing my hands on areas that need healing. Many clients relax so deeply that they fall asleep, I would gently wake you at the end of the treatment and we discuss anything that you felt during the session before you leave feeling relaxed and recharged. Can I drive or go straight back to work afterwards? YES! It is completely safe to return to your normal life immediately after a Reiki Session, if it’s possible to stay in a relaxed state and go home then that is great but by the time you leave my company you will ready to return to your day. Most people feel revitalised and recharged. I had a session of Reiki and felt very tearful. Is this always going to happen? NO! Sometimes you can experience a few tears during Reiki, this happens as you allow yourself to relax and let go. Sometimes pent up emotions can be released and this is always something I encourage. An emotional release during a treatment is very helpful for the client and passes quickly. Once the emotions have been released you will quickly return to your normal state and often people feel energised by the release as they have ‘let go’ of negative emotions they have been carrying.

40

The DIRECTORY - January 2019

How many sessions should I have? After just one session of Reiki you will feel better as it lifts and boosts your To advertise call or WhatsApp 675 091 982

WELLBEING energy. If you are dealing with emotional or physical pain then I would always recommend at least 3 sessions in close succession. Sometimes if people have very low energy it may take a few sessions to get things in balance. Is it beneficial to have Reiki even when I feel good? Would it be helpful to have a regular treatment? YES! Your energy body, just like your physical body, needs regular care and attention. Having Reiki when you feel well is equally beneficial if not more so. When you are physically and emotionally well the energy can move around the body to balance and recharge your cells and you will feel physically and mentally refreshed and revitalised. Taking photographs of wildlife can be one of the most exhilarating photographic experiences you can try. Spotting an animal in the wild can be thrilling and being able to record that moment can be highly rewarding. However, wild animals can be a particularly challenging subject matter, so wildlife photography can often prove frustrating. To help you get the most out of this compelling type of images, here are some tips to improve your wildlife photography. 1 PREPARATION No matter what type of wildlife you have chosen to photograph you will need to spend time getting to know its behaviour, routine and movements. Read up about your subject in advance, or search online for video or audio files, that can help you learn more about spotting your chosen subject. If possible, talk to experts in the field who know where, and when, to spot wildlife. If you are heading to a nature reserve or national park to take photographs, staff and volunteers are normally very willing to let you know of recent sightings or give you some handy local advice. 2 PRACTICE As with all types of photography, composition can make the difference between a good image, and a great image. When composing wildlife photographs, remember basic compositional guidelines 44

The DIRECTORY - January 2019

such as the highly effective Rule of Thirds. If your subject is looking to the left or right, leave an appropriate amount of space in the frame into which they can look. The same guideline applies if a moving animal is being captured – always leave room in the frame for them to move into. Getting down to eye-level (or lower) with an animal can produce dramatic images. 3 PERSEVERANCE While there is no denying that a certain amount of luck definitely comes in handy, the real key to taking better wildlife photographs is patience. Not necessarily the patience required for your chosen subject to appear, but the patience to capture the perfect shot that you have envisioned. When you do find an animal out in the wild, watch it for as long as possible and not just from behind the viewfinder. Spend time with it and learn its ways. 4 PASSION To take your wildlife shots from good to great, you need to be passionate about the natural world you are photographing. Take the time to appreciate nature and wildlife in all of its forms, wherever you find it. You do not have to go to an exotic location to do great wildlife photography. For example, macro photography offers a range of wildlife opportunities including spiders, beetles and flies. Rob Bell Photography. Capturing a Moment in Time. www.robbell.photography

BABA GANOUSH

RECIPE

Recipe from Richard Fox The Levant region of the Eastern Mediterranean is home to some of my favourite dishes in the world. The cuisine of this region which includes Syria, Iraq, Lebanon, Israel and Turkey boasts a rich cultural heritage, and bursts with exotic Mediterranean flavours and aromas, not to mention health-giving properties. Baba Ganoush is one of my all time favourites. If you happen to have a wood-fired pizza oven to hand, so much the better as you’ll impart an even richer smokies flavour to the aubergine than just cooking it directly over a gas flame. This is also one of those dishes that simply has to be home-made to get that truly authentic smokey aubergine flavour that I cannot imagine could be replicated by commercial production. Ingredients: 2 aubergines 2 tbsp tahini 2 cloves garlic crushed Juice of 1/2 - 1 lemon 2 tbsp olive oil Salt and pepper to taste 1 tbsp parsley

Method: If you are fortunate enough to have a wood-fired pizza oven, simply light the logs as you would normally do for pizza making and push the aubergines up to the flames. Turn the aubergines regularly over about a twenty minute period until they are blackened on the outside and the flesh is soft. Otherwise place them directly over a gas flame and do the same thing. Once blackened, remove from the heat and allow to cool enough to handle. Flake off the blackened skin and discard, leaving the delicious, smokey flesh. Chop the flesh and then combine with the remaining ingredients. Serve chilled or at room temperature with flat breads or baked crostini, or even a selection of crunchy cruditĂŠs. 2018 has seen a wholesale transformation in my health and lifestyle with truly remarkable results. To document this momentous journey and offer a little wellbeing inspiration, I have launched a brand new blog: www.manrejuvenated.com Please check it out - you never know where it may lead you!

EVERYONE NEEDS A BIT OF POSITIVITY Make a New Agreement with yourself this New Year Happy New Year! It’s that time of year again when we all start talking about New Years resolutions, new beginnings, and the year ahead. We make promises to ourself about what we want to change this year and what we want to achieve.

In the run up to Christmas I started to really think about this, I wanted to make additional positive changes for the New Year that would reduce my stress and bring me even more happiness and peace! As I opened my presents I found the most amazing book waiting for me… It was called The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz. Could this simple and beautiful little book be the answer to my prayers…? the back cover promised that I would find ‘An inspiring book with many great lessons’....it sounded perfect! I was not disappointed, this 54

wonderful little book did indeed offer great insights, wisdom and lessons. The almost ‘childlike simplicity of these four teachings left me feeling positive and excited about the year ahead and I wanted to share them with you…. BE IMPECCABLE WITH YOUR WORD Speak with integrity. Say only what you mean. Avoid using the word to speak against yourself or to gossip about others. Use the power of your word in the direction of truth and love. DON’T TAKE ANYTHING PERSONALLY Nothing others do is because of you. What others say and do is a projection of their own reality, there own dream. When you are immune to the opinions and actions of others, you won’t be the victim of needless suffering. DON’T MAKE ASSUMPTIONS Find the courage to ask questions and to express what you really want. Communicate with others as clearly as you can to avoid misunderstandings, sadness and drama. With just this one agreement you can completely transform your life. ALWAYS DO YOUR BEST Your best is going to change from moment to moment, it will be different when you are healthy as opposed to sick. Under any circumstances, simply do your best, and you will avoid selfjudgement, self-abuse and regret. I have been practising these four agreements for the past few weeks and I can honestly say it has been life changing. Its early days but so far I feel much more positive about every area of my life. I have failed a few times and

slipped back into my old ways but because I am DOING MY BEST I am not judging myself. I am learning to speak more positively, to not take things so personally, to communicate more clearly, and to be kinder to myself! I would highly recommend this book and the principles it contains to everyone, regardless of religious or spiritual beliefs. Being kind to yourself and others and doing your best are maybe the best New Years Resolution I have ever heard!

two VIKINGS FROM NORWAY

TWO vikings from norway Hiking the Pico del Cielo “Got you!” My boy laughed out loud. Covered in snow, he had a thrown a great snowball shot at me. Ok, I thought, “Now it´s war”. I gathered up some snow, made a ball and threw as hard as I could , but I missed, in the meantime he got me again. I was drenched! Anyone that has visited Nerja and the surrounding area has seen the majestic peak behind the town. Today was our turn to go up and explore it. Pico del Cielo, is a 1508 meters high treasure in the Sierra de Tejeda y Almijara Natural Park. It would certainly be a challenge for most. But these vikings were up for it. It was winter in Axarquia, a perfect time to do some hiking. At sunrise we parked next to the Cueva De Nerja and started our adventure. An estimated four hour uphill hike was in front of us. “This is easy.” My son said, walking in front of me on the road. We had followed it for more than an hour now. The first part of the hike was done. We arrived a Y-junction with a signpost for the El Pinarillo recreation area on the left (2 km) and Pico del Cielo to the right. The hike continued on a small forestry road that winded up the mountain. In some of the turns there was shortcuts that we tried. As the hike was becoming much steeper, I shouted ahead to my son, to not hike so fast. My heart rate was beating fast with this new incline.

At a height of a p p r ox i m a t e l y 600 meter the road suddenly went a bit downhill. Which was a welcome relief. We stopped here for a short rest and a captured some great photos looking across the valley towards Competa. There is an alternative path to the peak that starts here. It was not marked but look to the left and you should find it. After a short break and our energy renewed, we continued the hike up the small road. This route became steeper and steeper and as we progressed we could also see the top, Pico del Cielo, looking majestic in front of us. After around thirty minutes we arrived at the Cortijo de la Sibila. In front of us we had the famous Cuesta del Cielo. It went uphill in several turns. “Look, What an incredible view!” I pulled out my Sony to get some photographs. We could see Nerja and the wonderful Axarquia coastline down below us. After a good climb, just slightly below 1,100 meters we reached a mountain pass. To the right we had a nice view towards Granada and the Sierra Nevada. We turned left and continued along the Cuesta del Cielo. Within a short distance the path becomes extremely steep. “Be careful” I said to my boy “Go slowly and be careful not to hurt your ankles” It was very stoney, and some places even a bit slippery.

Today the peak was capped with snow. We were lucky as it was not normally snowing up here. After some really demanding places we finally reached our destination. The Pico del Cielo. I smiled, took a deep breath and looked at my watch the hike had taken 4 and a half hours. And then the snowball hit me.... again! We had just spent yet another amazing day together in sunny Axarquia. Some information. It’s not advisable to do a demanding hiking during summer months due to the heat. Remember to take with you enough food and water. It is an 9-10 To advertise call or WhatsApp 675 091 982

hours hike (with some breaks), so you should really start early. The view from the top is incredible. You can see the coastline from Almunecar to Malaga. And all the mountain peaks in Sierra de Tejeda and Sierra de Almijara. On our descent we followed the same route as up. We started our hike at the parking place next to Cueva De Nerja. But it is possible to shorten the hike considerably if you drive all the way to the earlier mentioned Y junction. There is a barrier at the start which is normally open during the winter months.
