That you no longer have to queue up outside the nation police station in Torre del Mar for an appointment? In fact they won’t see you unless you have a made an appointment online. For anything connected to renewing your residencia (green document or card) or making sure you are here legally ahead of Brexit, you should visit: https://sede.administracionespublicas.gob.es/icpplus/ and follow the steps to make an appointment at the nearest national police station. For anyone on the Axarquía, this will be the one on Avenida Andalucía in Torre del Mar. The HQ is due to move to its new building at the entrance to the town (just off the big roundabout near Mercadona el Tomillar etc) but no date has been fixed for the opening as yet. You will need to fill in a form, but you will be given that at the police station. It’s not very clear on the website which one you need exactly. I printed one off that sounded like it would be the right one, but of course it wasn’t! It was no problem and the nice lady gave me the right one. You will also have to pay a small fee at a bank (I had to pay 12 euros). The photocopy shop next door to the police station knows the form you need and has copies of it which they fill in for you. Residencia must be renewed after five years of living in Spain, but once that’s done you will be registered as a permanent resident and won’t need to do it again, at least as the law stands now. You will need to take with you photocopies of your current passport and the original green residencia document as well as some proof that you are a tax resident in Spain (I took along last year’s Declaración de la Renta or IRPF which seemed to do the job). On another note, Brexit or no Brexit, deal of no deal, Brits can still vote in local elections and even stand for councillor, thanks to a joint agreement signed by the Spanish and UK government in January. You must have registered your wish to be on the census at your local town hall by 31 January this year to be able to vote in this year’s elections. To advertise call or WhatsApp 675 091 982

GARDEN FENCES - How to choose the right one Do you have a love/hate relationship with your fence? You might love it as a quick and easy way to screen off your garden but you might hate it for being costly or just plain ugly. Here’s a look at what to consider when choosing your garden fence. Which fence? The quick answer is probably the best one in your budget. Unfortunately, cheap panels don’t last as long as more expensive ones and bear in mind that the labour involved is more or less the same whether it’s a cheap panel or an expensive one. But choosing doesn’t just come down to budget; your taste is very important and, as importantly, how much screening you need. I mention how much screening because the more interesting and artistic looking the fence panel is, the more gaps the fence tends to have in it. You’d be amazed at just how much you can see through even the smallest gaps. In this event, you might want to purchase a fast growing creeper to help the fence do its job of screening. It’s a good idea to hold up a panel of the fence you are interested in buying

16

The DIRECTORY - March 2019

first and try viewing it from different heights to check just how much you or your neighbours can see through it. Which fences to avoid Cheap ones! In the long run, they aren’t usually worth it. If you have no choice, then make sure you opt for really good posts and get them concreted into position properly so that when you need to replace the panels, you won’t have to go to the expense of replacing the posts as well - simply slot the new panels into place. Paint it Painting an existing fence is a popular option but you will need to choose the right colours and paints. Outside colour should be the opposite of what you would normally do inside. So, for example, we all know that magnolia coloured paint makes the space inside look larger. Do that outside and it’ll have the opposite effect; the light colour will bring the fence in visually closer. Paints with a high degree of white in them, including old-favourite the sage greens, will really make you notice that fence. Darker colours that have a higher degree of black in them, like the very

dark forest greens, will recess into the background. Beware! Don’t let it run through to the other side. It might be an idea to discuss it with your neighbour before you get going as they might be happy to paint theirs the same colour, so that you won’t have to spend quite so much time and effort making sure the paint doesn’t seep into their side. ‘Waney edge’ panels tend to warp and break quicker than any others. Also, if you to paint them, then the paint usually runs through to the neighbour’s side because the wood has warped leaving gaps in between each slat. You could buy a fence paint sprayer, which make it a little easier, but they do get clogged up quite easily so may not save you much time if you have to unclog them! Screening an ugly garden fence Easy if you opt for fast-growing climbing plants or even add screening to an existing

fence. Bamboo (bambú) screening is readily available in Spain, as is heather (brezo) which is more hard-wearing against our scorching summer rays. If you are adding screening , do make sure that the existing fence posts are in good enough condition to support the extra weight or you won’t be very popular with the neighbours if their fence falls down because of your ‘improvements’! If the posts wobble easily, then it’s probably not a good idea to attach anything to the fence - not even plants! Why are garden fences so expensive? You can get fencing panels for around 20€ each, but it’s amazing how an apparently reasonable price soon adds up. Add to the panel cost, posts, concrete, sand and cement, plus labour and of course VAT and, before you know it, each panel can cost around £100 or more to put up. Of course, you might not like the cost but compare it to putting up a brick wall and a fence suddenly looks like great value for money! Words: Tina Andlaw compellingcopy.co.uk

De Cotta Law - WILLS DAY AT THE NERJA OFFICE We are specialists in SPANISH & ENGLISH WILLS and Inheritance. On Wednesday the 6th of March we are holding free consultations for Wills at our NERJA OFFICE. With Brexit looming, there may be significant tax changes which could affect British citizens living in Spain as well as those who have property here but reside in the UK or elsewhere. This is an opportunity to consider your individual circumstances in confidence and ensure that your Spanish and UK assets are left to family or friends as you wish. Some people also want to consider leaving their assets or a gift to charity and it is important to ensure the charity is properly identified to receive your gift or legacy. If you already have wills in place we can review these, and in some cases no changes will be required. However, you would have the security of knowing that a specialist has looked at the provisions and your beneficiaries will not have to deal with complications. We can also advise on inheritances you have received or may receive in the future. Places will be limited so please book early. Call us on 952 527 014 or email nerja@decottalaw. net to make your appointment. We kindly ask those attending to make a small donation to our local charity, the Sisters of the Good Samaritan Residencia for the Elderly (Casa Residencia Hermanas del Buen Samaritano). www.decottalaw.com

OUT OUTAND ANDABOUT ABOUT

SEDELLA and SALARES The villages of Sedella and Salares are perched on the edge of the Tejeda, Almijara and Alhama mountain range. Sedella is about 650 metres above sea level, while Salares is slightly lower, at 450 metres. Sedella also sits on the boundary with Granada province and specifically the town of Alhama de Granada.

As the visitor enters the village of Sedella, they are met with not only the town hall building, but a beautifully preserved communal Fuente del Caño ‘lavadero’ or washing area, built in 1956. It is the place where the village residents would have taken their clothes to be washed before the installation of running water and of course modern washing machines in homes. Although it is kept closed, the visitor can peer through the bars to find a tiled picture of the village’s Roman Bridge as well as the old sinks and what seems to be a much-loved collection of pot plants. On the other side of the road the statue of an emigrant greets visitors. He is carrying a suitcase and was inaugurated in 2017 to pay tribute to the many men of Sedella who were forced to leave the families in search of work during the last century. In fact, current mayor, Francisco Albolafio, known locally as Paco, described to me when we visited the village how he and his five siblings grew up without their father, as his father worked away in Germany for most of the year.

The men typically found work in Germany or Switzerland and sent money home to their families. Another story, which local British residents, John Hardy and Wendy Foss tell, is that of two goatherds who, unable to sell their goats in Spain, travelled on two or three occasions, by foot, up to the border with France, where they were able to get a good price for them. They would spend weeks sleeping rough with their animals and sold the goats’ milk every day in order to buy bread and cheese to keep them going on their long journey. John retells the story in his recent book about the village,’ Sedella – the story of a Spanish village.’ He explains that they returned by bus, but on the last trip they had made so much money that they flew back. “I wouldn’t have wanted to be the passengers sitting near them on the plane. Imagine the smell!” John laughs. Other points of interest in Sedella include the Mudéjar tower, known as the Casa Torreón, which is next to the San Andrés church. The tower is now privately owned and was having an extension built onto it when we visited. The tower and church are both situated in Plaza de la Constitución, which is also home to two small shops. There are four bars in Sedella, which offer food as well as drinks. Legend has it that young unmarried woman who drinks from the village’s Fuente del Chorillo will marry soon after. In Salares, visitors should explore the Hornos de los Moros and Puente Árabe, as well as the church, which was built on the site of a mosque and was declared a monument of historical and cultural interest in 1979. As the villages are in the foothills of the sierra, a lot of the sights can be found in the surrounding mountains. These include Sedella’s Roman bridge, depicted on the tiles in the lavadero, the Ermita de la Virgen del Esperanza (chapel) and an OUT To advertise AND ABOUT call or in WhatsApp SEDELLA 675 & SALARES 091 982

Like many of the villages in the Axarquía, Sedella and Salares depend economically on olives, almonds and vineyards and as there is no olive oil cooperative in the villages, most olives are taken to the Cooperativa Agrícola Santa Catalina Mártir in Arenas.

Festivals Both Sedella and Salares start the year by celebrating San Antón (Saint Anthony) on 17 January, the patron saint of animals. Sedella celebrates its cultural week as well as Día de Andalucia in February and has its own Semana Santa celebrations over Easter. The Romería de la Virgen de la Esperanza takes place in May and during the last week in June, threshing season is marked with the día de la trilla. Salares’s annual feria, in honour of the Saint Anne (Santa Ana), is held around 26 July, while in Sedella, the feria in honour of the Virgen de la Esperanza, the village’s patron saint, is held over the first weekend in August. The end of summer fiesta is held to mark the closing of the Sedella’s outdoor pool in September as well as the Candelaria. Christmas and New Year are also celebrated in the villages. To get to Salares and Sedella you can either take the A 356 from Vélez-Málaga past Trapiche and through Canillas de Aceituno, or go via Cómpeta. There is a bus service that runs from Torre del Mar and Vélez-Málaga up to Sedella from Monday to Saturday. There is no service on Sunday or bank holidays. Written by Jennie Rhodes 36

Most people are familiar with the term Golden Hour – used to describe that time just after the sun rises or just before it sets. The light is soft, extraordinary and sought out by many. However, if you pack up your gear when the sun drops below the horizon, you are missing out on another magical time! Also known as twilight, Blue Hour refers to that time of the day just before or after the Golden Hour. Depending on your location, it may be shorter (or longer) than an hour but happens before sunrise or after sunset. If you want to capture images of this amazing time of day, here are a few tips to help you get started. 1. Timing is everything There is a unique quality of light available at blue hour. The sky has a vivid hue of blue and purple. Perhaps even hints of your fallen sunset, cresting sunrise colors: yellow, orange and red. In either case, the sun is below the horizon, but its light is indirect and still visible. If you are shooting cityscapes after sunset, wait for the lights to come on and for the sky to darken a little, so you can shoot longer exposures. As mentioned above, depending on your location your Blue “Hour” will vary. If you are closer to the equator, both the Golden and Blue “Hours” are shorter. Similarly, you have more shooting time when further away from the equator. Blue Hour times vary by season and, depending on the time of year and location, may not even occur immediately before or after the 38

The DIRECTORY - March 2019

Golden Hours. There are locations where blue hour happens up to forty-five minutes after sunset! When in an unfamiliar environment (e.g. traveling), one option is to get there early and wait. There are also apps and websites available to help you determine Blue Hour based on location. If you use the latter, scouting your environment beforehand still proves useful. 2. Keep it steady You may get away with shooting sunrises and sunsets without a tripod, but it is nonnegotiable for blue hour. This is especially true if you want to shoot cityscapes with a smaller aperture (to get those beautiful starbursts). A tripod is a must for long exposures and allows you to shoot at lower ISOs, thus reducing noise in your images. You can further reduce camera shake by using a remote shutter release. This useful gadget helps you minimize touching the camera. If you do not have a remote, use your camera’s timer, so that the image is taken a few seconds after you press the shutter button. Bonus tip: Long exposures use more battery power, so pack a few spares. 3. What settings? There is some flexibility when it comes to Blue Hour photography, depending on your subject. JUST GIVING - SSAFA - Homeless Veterans Two soldiers Craig and Danny, are about to challenge themselves, walking 111 miles from Torrox (Malaga) to the top of the Rock of Gibraltar between the 17- 20/21 April 19. This is the equivalent of 4 marathons in 4 days with a few extra miles left over. Craig and Danny are no strangers to walking, they both took part in a 100 mile walk from Walsall football Ground to Valley Parade Bradford City football ground over 3 days on 1 April 2017 they were joined by 3 other family members who were not quite used to walking such long distances. They raised funds for St John’s Hospice in Lancaster, and The Burns unit in Bradford in memory of the 56 lives that were lost at Valley Parade in May 1985. Craig recently raised money for all three service charities : Walk a Mile With A Smile, for the RNBT, ABF the Soldiers Charity and RAFBF. This challenge started on 1 Dec 17 and finished on 1 Jun 18. He walked 897 miles over the 183 days not missing one day of walking. Craig and Danny are particularly keen to raise much needed funds for their latest charity SSAFA – Homeless veterans, not only because they are serving soldiers, but because they believe that no service person whether Royal Navy Army or Royal Airforce should ever have to live on the streets. AFRICAN PEANUT SOUP

RECIPE

Recipe from Richard Fox

I’m delighted to say that my little repertoire of recipes on my health and well-being blog ( https://manrejuvenated.com/) is growing by the week, so I thought this month I would give you a little flavour of what you can expect there. Since my wholesale rejuvenation and conversion to a whole-foods, plant-based diet which inspired my blog in the first place, I have never felt so good. My blood pressure has dropped from pre-hypertension to normal and I’ve even come off the statins I’ve been on for fifteen years. I am now completely pharmaceutical free! But of course there’s no point in swapping one negative for another - meals have still got to be bursting with flavour and deliciousness. This recipe hits that spot big time. What’s more, it’s incredibly quick and easy to make and will serve up a satisfying main course as much as it will a starter. Enjoy!

Ingredients: Serves 4 as a main course 1tbsp coconut oil 1 lge onion, finely chopped 1 lge thumb-size piece of ginger, peeled and grated or chopped 2 tsp curry powder 1/2 tsp cayenne pepper 125g peanuts (salted or plain) 400g cooked chickpeas (drained weight) 400g tin chopped tomatoes 500ml vegetable stock salt and pepper to taste (leave out salt if using salted peanuts) Handful of fresh coriander, chopped Heat the oil in a saucepan and add the onions. Cook over a medium heat until softened. Add the ginger and then the spices. Cook for a couple of minutes, stirring. Add the peanuts and chickpeas and stir well to combine. Add the tomatoes and stock and bring to the boil. Turn down the heat and simmer for five minutes. Blitz the contents of the pan (in batches if necessary) in a blender until smooth. Reheat as necessary and serve topped with the chopped coriander. EVERYONE NEEDS A BIT OF POSITIVITY Just because you are struggling, doesn’t mean you are failing! I often speak to friends and clients who are not feeling their best, maybe their confidence is low, maybe they are finding it hard to face people and situations, maybe they cry everyday because they don’t want to leave the house? Now this is not just people who are aware of a mental illness or heightened stress levels… this is so called ‘normal’ people. Often what transpires is that they are exhausted, they have been putting on this ‘Brave Face’ for so long and cant to talk to anyone about what is going in their head! They feel like a failure, they punish themselves because they feel they cant cope with life… and it seems everyone else is doing ok…. So what is wrong with them?? In my line of work I see many clients from many different countries and varied cultures, the one similarity between them all is that they put on the ‘Brave Face’! Even when they may feel dreadful on the inside they pretend to the world that they are ok! I can also tell you without doubt that for every person that walks through my door appearing to be on top of the world, 8 out of 10 of them are actually struggling to cope!!! Life is hard! This world is brutal! and the addition of glossy magazines, social media and reality tv has done nothing to improve the situation! No one copes all the time! No one’s life is as interesting or glamourous as it appears on facebook or Instagram, the world has become fake and in order to fit in we try and fake our emotions and our happiness! Everyone struggles! Mostly because we judge ourselves against an unrealistic and imaginary benchmark that actually EVERYONE is failing to reach! If I am in a tense social situation I’m usually the first to start talking (not keen on uncomfortable silence ha ha) The minute i start to open up about my vulnerabilities or the fact im scared or nervous I can physically see the relief and fear slipping away from the other people as they realise they are not the only ones struggling to cope, followed closely by them joining in and sharing their feelings too, their vulnerabilities. And there is magic in that! So be the first to show your true self, to be brave and vulnerable at the same time…. I promise it will not only help yourself but others around you too! 54

COSTA DEL CRIME When he was a youngster, Montgomery Charles Chester was a petty thief and criminal. His father had been a desert rat in the war. He had named his son after the general who had led him during his time in Egypt; and also after his favourite comedian, ‘cheerful Charlie Chester’. As he grew up, from childhood to his early twenties, Monty had spent several years in borstal and then a variety of prisons. In 1959, when he was twenty-four, a series of events happened that was to change his life forever. The first one occurred just days after his release from his latest prison sentence. Shortly after his return home, his widowed father died of a massive heart attack. He left his son his service medals, money from a life insurance policy, and the house in Whitechapel not far from the Mile End Road. The second was Monty’s meeting with Colin Messenger in a nearby pub. Colin, who had grown up next door to Monty, was now a DS in the Met. He said, “Hi, Charlie.” Colin used Monty’s second name as he had always thought of him as ‘cheerful Charlie’, being a fan of the radio comic. “Hi, Charlie, now you’ve got some money I’d advise you go away for a holiday and sort your life out.” Monty, who had never been further from the East End than Southend apart that is from his time in prisons dotted around the country, decided this was a good idea. But how, he wondered. 58

The next day the third thing happened when he went into a travel agent. He was thinking of the Lake District or perhaps Cornwall when he saw a huge poster on the wall behind the desk advertising the Costa del Sol. After years of semi-isolation, Franco had chummied up to Eisenhower and been given a loan in exchange for allowing American bases in his country. Industry and tourism were now developing in the wake of this. A series of fishing villages to the west of Málaga were being developed as holiday destinations. Lured by the poster showing blue sky and sea and scantily clad young women sunbathing, Monty booked a two week stay in one of the new hotels in Torremolinos. It was on the fourth day of his stay that the next step of his change of lifestyle took place when he went into Bar Angel. Angel the owner had been a fisherman when the development of the pueblo started. He had quickly built a basic chiringuito near the beach, and opened it selling seafood meals to his customers; fish caught by his son Angelito who had taken over the boat. His daughter Carmen went to work as a maid in one of the new villas built and occupied by some of the English people who were beginning to flood the area. Her wages went towards paying the debt her father had taken on buying his bar and extending it into a small hostal. Both Angelito and Carmen worked in the chiringuito in the evenings after their work. This is how Monty met Carmen and they became first friends and then much more. She persuaded him to move from his hotel into the new hostal, though he didn’t take much persuading. The final coincidence was when she told him about the family she worked for in the villa. They were the infamous Donlevys who were wanted by the English police for murder and armed robbery. Randolph Donlevy and his two sons Greg and Austin had fled to the Costa del Sol as there was no extradition treaty between England and Spain, and lived there now with two young women, Rita and Bridget. Monty knew the Donlevy family quite well as they had only lived a few streets away from where he had been brought up in Whitechapel. It was when Carmen told him of their plan to go back to England via Ireland to carry out another bank robbery that he hatched his plan. The Donlevys didn’t think Carmen understood English so she had heard all the details. By flying to Ireland, driving to Ulster and crossing the sea to Liverpool, their passports wouldn’t be scrutinised by the British police. On his instructions she made a note of their ferry bookings, which he passed on to To advertise call or WhatsApp 675 091 982

his friend DS Messenger who gladly paid him a handsome bonus for it. It would, he knew, help his promotion to Inspector if he was responsible for the capture of the Donlevys. Monty added this to his inheritance and money from the sale of his house, moved to Torremolinos and went into business with Angel. Once the Donlevys were taken out of circulation, Rita and Bridget fled back to England leaving the villa unoccupied. Carmen knew where the Escritura was and Angel was able to have it transferred into his name, with the help of friends in the relevant office. It became the first of many letting properties that he and Monty owned in the area. You may ask how I know all this. In 1989, when I was thirty, my mother, just before she died, told me a story and I came to Spain. My father had been

hanged for murder, along with his brother, about twenty five years earlier. He had apparently been a notorious bank robber along with his father and brother. I had always thought Alan was my dad, but he turned out to be just my stepfather. This was welcome news to me as I had never liked him much or got along with him at all. I came to Spain looking for where I’d been conceived, and met Marta working in an agency letting properties in Torremolinos. It was Marta who filled in the gaps in what I knew of the story. When we decided to get hitched I met her parents, Monty and Carmen. The only thing left to complete the story is my mother’s name. It was Rita, the girlfriend of Austin Donlevy. © JOHN HARDY 2019 Short story by John Hardy Visit the website to see more of his books: http://www.johnhardybooks.com All of this is FREE, but a donation to Axarquia Animal Rescue following your visit will be much appreciated, but it’s not compulsory.
